There are newer and better consoles like the crazy Lenovo one, if steam didn’t do this they could lose a big competitive advantage to the crazy competition they have even tho they’re more expensive they also offer more.
So according to Valve, this is the definitive Steam Deck 1.0. Everything that they ever wanted it to be at its launch is in here. This is probably why the price didn't increase. @@officerminiwheats This is not something Steam can force other developers to implement. this will only change when the Steam Deck, Linux or both become way more popular.
Honestly, the lower performance still puts me on the fence. I'd say the choice now feels like steam deck vs legion go if lenovo can fix some software issues.
The amount of work they did to the cooling because of the extra internal space from the screen was impressive to hear. I don't recall hearing nintendo do anything like that with their oled version.
It is because the switch doesn't generate much heat, it is a quite an underclocked chip even docked, and is arm, so the heat is still a lot lower compared the the steam deck oled.
@@oo--7714not just because it's arm, but because it's a 2015 design that they never bothered to upgrade that people still keep buying for some reason.
@ because it's a 2015 design (2 years before the switch came out) The ps4 was using an even older design when it came out. Even the steam deck is using a pretty old design. The thing was only out of reservation earlier this year and rdna 2 came out in 2020.

Great first party titles even this year with TOTK being highly successful, followed by some excellent remasters and one of the best 2d games in Mario wonder. Lots of deals and sales on the digital shop. It’s currently the 3 rd best selling console ever. That’s even with the very old hardware, the joy con drift and Nintendo first party titles not losing their high prices. It’s just an excellent system where the benefits vastly outweigh the negatives. @@divyjotsingh3879The X1 is more powerful than what people make it out to be. It took a while for developers to get used to, but games like Bayonetta 3, Doom Eternal, The Witcher 3, Nier Automata, TOTK, Dragon Quest 11, Alien Isolation, Dying Light and to an extent Persona 5 Royal, goes to show just how flexible the chipset is. It isn’t ideal that Nintendo has stuck with the X1 for almost 7 years, but it is hardly a big issue when it comes to development and overall performance. The games mentioned ran very well. The Witcher 3 stands out the most at a consistent 30fps which is the same performance as PS4 and the Xbox One. So, from Nintendo’s point of view, why would they upgrade the system when devs are still finding a way and the Switch always selling so well on the monthly basis?
I'm not willing to upgrade yet but man, I'm jealous of the people who don't already have a Steam Deck. The base model is already amazing. These upgrades give it a huge bump in my eyes. Hey Dave, base Steam Deck was not 256 GB. It was 64 GB of eMMC storage. Trick is, todays base model is actually previous mid model. They basically continue to manufacture previous mid model, with same APU, same battery, same smaller fan, same LCD but are now selling it as base model. Also, there was not 1TB option previously. Former lineup was 64GB eMMC, 256 SSD and 512 SSD. So base is now 256 SSD with older hardware, mid is 512GB with OLED, bigger battery, larger fan and better more efficient APU and flagship is 1TB

Great to see a demonstration showing that the screen protector fixes the etched glass problem. I got the 1TB because I didn’t want to mess with cracking it open to upgrade the storage, and I was starting to regret it until I saw this video.
In my opinion, the biggest reason Sony and Valves business strategies are so divergent (at least with respect to PS5 and Steam Deck) is because one company is publicly traded - and therefore must grow indefinitely, while the other is privately held. Valve doesn’t need to concern itself with infinitely growth and appeasing investors. They just need to focus on maintaining their financial viability. It’s the same reason why businesses like In-n-out have been able to keep wages above average the national average, maintain good food quality, and don’t feel the need to constantly open new restaurants. It’s because they’re not accountable to shareholders.
Perfectly summed up. And I do think the chip change made by AMD for ps5 is probably gonna reserve to Pro version. There's one thing I could say for the ps5 refresh. At least it's the same price as the older model(499usd), if we look at Amazon US at least. In my country ps5 old model is 700 usd
I bought the 256gb LCD steam deck on a whim a month ago for a steal on FB market place, and I absolutely LOVE it. To see Valve actually make a solid refresh is really exciting.
It is a very minor thing and not at all important, but I liked how the inside of the new model is colour coded and cleaner in look compared to the older model. I am sorry I get drawn to aesthetics quite often. If you use a transparent back cover, it would give out an interesting look to the SD.
I really want that glossy screen, but I also want 1TB storage. Would it be better to get the 512GB OLED and then upgrade the storage manually? Or get the 1TB anti-glare OLED and replace the screen manually?
Why get a worse screen? Just get the 512 gb and get an as card or upgrade the ssd. I wanted the limited edition so bad but I just could not go with the worse screen…😢
I'm sure Valve's refresh was also motivated by monetary gain. There's a lot more competition in the handheld space since they originally launched the Steam Deck.
Yeah I think a better phrasing would be that Sony focused on reducing costs. That PS5 “refresh” is cheaply made and looks like it, and insultingly enough they even raised prices for it. Granted, we don’t actually know the pricing of the new SD models yet cause it’s not on their website, but Valve at least brought the old 256 GB option down to $400, eliminating the pretty worthless 64 GB model.

@@seanlacroix Why? It's still not gonna look as good as putting a screen protector on the lower tier model. The 1tb drive is completely unneccessary. Just get an SD card, it's not a big difference for games you wanna play on a deck.
@@tvh369 yeah, but for the price of the more expensive model you can easily get the lesser model with more space by ss card. You can also get a 2tb SD card if price is no option. Storage space is nearly meaningless. And the screen is not gonna look as odd because there still is layer of light distributing material in the middle. The effect you see in that video is a lot of the light coming from the outside being redirected before hitting the original screen surface, but not all of it, otherwise the protector would have to be nontransparent. At the same time, the light coming from the deck also has to pass through that layer, and that you will not change with another layer on top at all.

The difference shown by putting a glossy protector on the etched screen was quite startling, but I do wonder if that big difference might only be because you're looking at it under harsh studio lighting? Is it still so bad in more regular lighting conditions? Oled pixels showing black do not produce any light so to make it look washed out that light has to be coming from outside. I’m torn about which version to buy. This will be my first SD. I really like that double case the $649 version includes but after seeing Dave’s video I’m worried about the etched screen ruining the OLED experience. Will applying a glass screen protector truly “fix” that as Dave suggested? I mean, will it look just like the non etched version? Wish the $549 version had that case.
I'm in the same spot. I may be wrong but to me the colors differ when viewed from the angle. Notice there is like no difference when the Deck is put down.
@@mossglow hopefully one of the reviewers can get hold of both versions of the OLED and do a direct comparison of the screens, and also see if the screen protector “fixes” the etched version as Dave2D said.
Putting a screen protector on the antiglare 1tb models won’t fix the blacks and vibrant colors and sharpness because the screen is still etched underneath. This is why I went with the 512 gb one even though I wanted the limited edition so bad! There’s a video somewhere on UA-cam that shows a comparison with a glossy one and an etched one with a screen protector on. It helped a little bit but it still looked more blurry, less vibrant and grey blacks on the one with a glossy screen protector on the etched oled screen.
I’m actually more giddy with the possibilities of the Steam Deck 2. This is the blueprint for the next gen handheld PC gaming going mainstream coming in the near future. OLED screen? Check. Battery life? Check. Performance per watt? Check. Now we just need the next Ryzen APU. 🤤
Thank you for covering the difference between the anti glare and normal display. I’m Oled gloss panel for life I refuse to purchase anti glare displays. I always feel the colors get muted. Never bought the og deck and with these upgrades I will now own one.
How does the anti-glare etched glass compares to the non-anti-glare etched glass OLED? Does it makes the display washed out? I want to get the 1TB Limited Edition, but I hate matte OLED screens, and I fear that this screen is going to look bad with this "coating".
Not convinced on losing all the OLED goodness with the anti glare etched glass. Sure it won't look as good as the barely see yourself glossy but it's worth it.
agree. and if you notice as soon as he sat it down you couldn't even tell the difference. it was only at the one specific angle. I have had the original steamdeck etched since launch, and i love it. the screen is so durable. I get zero glare anywhere. When i play with my switch oled in the house, the glare is awful with any lights on. The best part IMO about etched is that it DOES NOT SCRATCH, ever. You don't need to worry about a screen protector at all
Im not bying into the the 1TB being less inky black, as you can see at 3:10, the 1TB had more inky blacks and colors pop better. I was tempted to get the 512GB to compare but i must see a H2H comparison now to prove so. Plus i need the full 1TB ssd, as i choose not to open the SD.
Exactly. I'm sticking with the 1TB model as I'm sure I'll need the extra ssd space. And there has not been one H2H comparison with both screens, just speculation.
Watching this just to confirm my purchase of the OLED 2 days ago and couldn't be happier with it. Such a cool little system and will definitely buy the next one
one thing not mentioned thought, the etched screen is so much more durable than the glossy. my original etched deck does not have one single scratch on it.
Not sure if you’ll see this, but are you saying if you place a regular screen protector over the etched glass to bring back the gloss, it will help to restore the look of the true OLED screen/deeper blacks? I couldn’t resist the orange details in the limited edition but I’m a little bummed to know the etched glass can tone down the look of the screen a bit…
This is why we need to keep supporting valve with our money. They're very customer focused Sucks for early adopters of the device as this new one is much better, but very good buy for the new wave of deck owners
@@NoSmoke1nah we just got the first version, it’s expected that better will come along. Even before the oled the steam deck was one of the bast options for handheld pcs. If anything we should be greatful that they are improving it so much
Lmao, no corporation is “customer focused”.. can’t believe !diots like you are this naive. If you think they are doing this out of the goodness of their hearts then you should look to get laid and touch grass. As an equities investor of 10 years and as a result of it I have become debt free, corporation are still corporations.. Valve not being publically traded doesn’t change this. If Valve sees no financial reason to do what they do, they wouldn’t be going all out. They don’t give a $hit about you. Corporations are NOT your friend. I invested in these corps because I see their greed and wanted a lick of the ice cream and a decade later and as a result, I am debt free and on track for retirement before 31-32 years of age.
@Dave2D I think you didn't notice one of the other biggest updgrade: the base 400$ model now has 256GB NVMe SSD, and the 64GB EMMC option is retired now.
So a piece of glass screen protector will somehow cancel out the anti glare? I mean I can see in the video somewhat. It doesn’t cause any blurring or weird effects? I really want to try to get the limited one but I was a little put off based on reviews about the anti glare with the original Deck that had it. I’m not sure about Valve’s thought process there.
Kinda confused on what you mean at 4:08 Do you still get some benefits of the anti glare screen if you use a screen protector? If I’m installing a screen protector and upgrading the ssd, is it worth getting the 1tb over the 512gb?
I'm lost on the comparison between gloss and matte screen. When Dave attaches the screen protector and puts the deck down there is no difference in either colors or black levels. It only differs when viewed from the angle. This makes me difficult to judge how much less vibrant and deep black the etched glass version is.
Valve should put an oculink port simular to what rog allly has. This way people could use and extenal gpu and haver better performance when decked. For those who use the Steam deck as the main PC it would be fantastic
I don't think it's worth upgrading if you are already comfortable with the device you have, but it's nice that it exists. It would be the one to get if I didn't already have one. Eager to see what's next.
A minor update they could have done to the case that’d be great, is if it had a Velcro flap(or something) to allow you to charge the device with the case closed
So I really like the limited version style but don’t like the matte screen, can I simply put a glossy glass screen protector to get the same nice color just as the 512gb OLED version has?
Great review. Short and sweet and to the point. Also it's amazing what Valve did with the new steam deck. Makes me want to get one even though i already have one. So many improvements and seems so worth it.
Base 256gb at $400 is a huge win. One big reason the Steam Deck was so well loved was the price. $400 was amazing, but man oh man 64gb was bs; I couldn't even fill my 512gb micro sd half full with games, because the internal storage always got full first. 256gb is the actually gonna be enough storage if you install all your games on the micro sd card. Huge props to Valve with this refresh and price drop.
Did they fix the power button? It was a major flaw on the original - on a lot of devices it’d get horribly unresponsive after just a month or two of use and required 5-6 presses or mashing to turn on/off.
Not only is the oled one good, but it also makes buying the older ones better. Their prices have been lowered and especially the refurbished ones are a crazy good deal now (though only the 512gb model is available). I ordered a refurbished 512gb non-oled deck for 380€, which is about 190€ cheaper than the 512gb oled model and only 10€ more than a new 64gb non-oled model (and a decent bit cheaper than a new 256gb model). Although the increase in screen quality is mostly insignificant to me, the increased refresh rate, slightly better performance, weaker battery adhesive and especially the improved battery life would be great to have. However, it's not worth the additional 190€ for me and being able to get the old model for this money is what finally convinved me to buy the thing. This is not a whole new console, but it's a really great refresh.
So is the anti glare model worth it when putting on a screen protector to bump up the contrast and blacks again? May be hard to tell in your video but since you have them there with you but was it equal or still slightly worse with the protector on it?
If I were to put a glossy screen protector over the anti glare etched screen would it look the same if I did the same glossy screen protector over the regular non-etched screen?
The Steam Deck refresh is much better than I expected. I am a great fan of the Steam Deck and Steam OS and I plan to get an OLED model. Valve are an excellent company who offer real value for money and amazing software and game support. I wish Apple would be more like Valve. Apple make some great hardware, but their operating system sharp practices and extortionately priced upgrade options always make me come away feeling I have been fleeced!
My biggest gripe with the old steam deck is it's weight. I have to support it on something or I get wrist pain eventually. Not like I'm a weak guy either, been lifting weights for >10 years. If they made a much lighter one similar to the weight of the N Switch I'd buy it instantly

Hi, I play only at home and want the best screen... But i want 1tb too. Did i understand right,? 1tb oled with glossy display protector is like the 512gb glas?
You convinced me on the $100 cheaper 512 gb model. I have the current 512 anti glare model and I will say while its nice to play in the car when there's potential for alot of sun glare the colors can seem muted. I dont want anything to dull that OLED panel and 512 GB is plenty of space for me considering I also use a 512 GB micro SD card.
I’m torn. I’ve not owned a SD yet and plan to order this OLED version next week. I really like that new carrying case that only the top tier gets but am concerned about the etched screen ruining the OLED experience. Do you think Dave is correct that if I just put a glass screen protector on it the display will look like the non etched version?
@@tappersreviews4677a glossy screen protector won’t fix it as it will still be extched glass underneath lol don’t choose a slim removable case over a better screen. There’s a video on UA-cam of a guy comparing a oled glossy screen with a etched screen with a glossy protector and it helps a little bit but it still didn’t look as vibrant or clear as the glossy one and the darks don’t look only black.
Dave’s comparison with the etched glass is going to save my wallet. The limited edition looks amazing but I’d rather have glossy glass. 512gb model it is.
Skip to 4:10 and pause. Which looks better? Everyone will say bottom. The reflections on the top are very distracting. I own the 1TB model and it’s mind blowing beautiful. Turn on vibrancy to max in settings and everything pops. No glare is the way
Do you think we'll be able to swap out the SSD without removing the adhesive from that detached ribbon cable? I would hope that we can just pop out the old and put in the SSD that most of us are currently using without needing to reapply the adhesive
Even though the Ally is superior in perfomance...OLED, amazing OS and usability and the better battery - the SD is the best handheld PC hands down right now. Getting that sweet glossy model as matte panels and OLED just don't go well together and it's not like I need to play on the beach with the sun behind me.

- Even better speakers (new DSP chip to help improve sound quality & clarity)
- Still compatible with old 3rd party accessories

@@NoSmoke1nah we just got the first version, it’s expected that better will come along. Even before the oled the steam deck was one of the bast options for handheld pcs. If anything we should be greatful that they are improving it so much
Early adaptors are true heroes, without those support, there will be no future revisions as businesses have forecasts.
I invested in these corps because I see their greed and wanted a lick of the ice cream and a decade later and as a result, I am debt free and on track for retirement before 31-32 years of age.
if no one bought the original there would be no new device so thank you
@Dave2D I think you didn't notice one of the other biggest updgrade: the base 400$ model now has 256GB NVMe SSD, and the 64GB EMMC option is retired now.
Yes! Going to buy one at last! Well done to the SteamDeck Team! Can only get better from here!
No it won’t fix it. The screen underneath the glossy protector is still etched.
Kinda confused on what you mean at 4:08
Do you still get some benefits of the anti glare screen if you use a screen protector?
Welcome again to the series-
Things i see but can't afford.
Everything this reviews I can't afford
Haha maybe one day 😅
Maybe work towards increasing your paycheck ❤
I don't think it's worth upgrading if you are already comfortable with the device you have, but it's nice that it exists. It would be the one to get if I didn't already have one. Eager to see what's next.
2:55 which in should we all get... the etched screen or normal screen?
Imo they should offer the top tier without the etched glass! 🤔
This new Deck is a massive win really impressed with it and cannot wait for a steam deck 2!
Dave again, gave us the best review, that demo of the screen difference was on point 👏👏
A minor update they could have done to the case that’d be great, is if it had a Velcro flap(or something) to allow you to charge the device with the case closed
I think it may be an overheating problem while in the case. That's why they did it, I remember reading something about it
I'm assuming any screen protector will suffice to battle the screen glare issue Dave's talking about?
So I really like the limited version style but don’t like the matte screen, can I simply put a glossy glass screen protector to get the same nice color just as the 512gb OLED version has?
Massive improvement that is totally unexpected!!!! Wow might have to pick this one up
WHAT A YEAR FOR HANDHELDS! First the Ally, then the Legion Go, and now the Steam Deck OLED!
Now we need the ultimate handheld comparison video!
Sheesh that steam deck is still bad. Oled screen? Nothing special
@@TheVoyagers.yea just a slightly bigger screen and OLED but it’s still behind the Ally and Legion Go in terms of power.
@@TheVoyagers.you don't heard about everthing that change?

@@YOUNGJBR It's a handheld PC, battery life beats power all day, everyday.
Valve listened. Props to them!. I'm getting this. Gaben you monster.
I really hope they could do a trade in option, otherwise well I guess I have to sell mine.
Trade ins are a nightmare to manage. I would not get my hopes up.
@@PeakKissShot yeah sadly I think so too.
This was so unexpected, but so perfect😍
The Steam Deck refresh is much better than I expected. I am a great fan of the Steam Deck and Steam OS and I plan to get an OLED model. Valve are an excellent company who offer real value for money and amazing software and game support. I wish Apple would be more like Valve. Apple make some great hardware, but their operating system sharp practices and extortionately priced upgrade options always make me come away feeling I have been fleeced!
Exactly! Already sold my lcd one and waiting to get the oled version…
I admit I envy all the cool stuff Dave and Marques are given. The tech they use and enjoy every single day.
They’re just review units that they have to ship back
@@JCMaldonado13but still they get to toy with it 🥹
I used to say that before i started making actual money, you'll get there too
Do you think the glossy screen on 512gb look better? Because usually i do prefer the image quality of glossy
My biggest gripe with the old steam deck is it's weight. I have to support it on something or I get wrist pain eventually. Not like I'm a weak guy either, been lifting weights for >10 years. If they made a much lighter one similar to the weight of the N Switch I'd buy it instantly
In a rare turn of events, in Canada the Steam Deck OLED is $50 USD cheaper. That's what was more surprising to me.
where can I get one? I am in Canada
But you’ve to pay 2 million dollars for a house so it’s fair
@@adeyinkasokunbi8132 online steam store, don't think it will be in best buy or amazon
@ihmpall I'm from Canada and that made me lol 😂

the quality and attention to details is insane ..even the case is very well thought .. devs need to support it on release otherwise no point ..
I really enjoy how you produce your videos. Your method of communicating information is so eloquent, and uniquely conveys your character to the audience.
Thanks
Hi,
I play only at home and want the best screen...
Do you think Dave is correct that if I just put a glass screen protector on it the display will look like the non etched version?
if you dont need alot of space just get the 512
@@tappersreviews4677
@@tappersreviews4677 wondering the same thing.
@@tappersreviews4677a glossy screen protector won’t fix it as it will still be extched glass underneath lol don’t choose a slim removable case over a better screen. With that 100 dollars you’ll save you can buy a 3rd party slim case. There’s a video on UA-cam of a guy comparing a oled glossy screen with a etched screen with a glossy protector and it helps a little bit but it still didn’t look as vibrant or clear as the glossy one and the darks don’t look only black.
I’m buying this instead of a PS5
Good call tbh I might sell my ps5 to put money towards a steam deck myself
Don’t do it, it’s already outdated. It barely plays triple A games at 30 fps. You’re better off with a ps5.
Honestly, I ended up getting a PS5. I still want a steam deck as well though!
@@protodg6567 ps5 also barely plays AAA games at 30 fps lmao

Dave’s comparison with the etched glass is going to save my wallet. The limited edition looks amazing but I’d rather have glossy glass. 512gb model it is.
Yes will buy 512gb model and upgrade the storage later.
Does the glossy glass look better?
@@maddevil7474it's subjective. I don't mind the etched glass in the LE. There's a reason why it's offered on the top Sku's
Skip to 4:10 and pause. Which looks better? Everyone will say bottom. The reflections on the top are very distracting. I own the 1TB model and it’s mind blowing beautiful. Turn on vibrancy to max in settings and everything pops. No glare is the way
this sold me on the 1 TB model. Thanks!@@TheChatwins
Wait, so putting on a glossy screen protector will counter the matte color problem?
Do you think we'll be able to swap out the SSD without removing the adhesive from that detached ribbon cable?
I would hope that we can just pop out the old and put in the SSD that most of us are currently using without needing to reapply the adhesive
Even though the Ally is superior in perfomance...OLED, amazing OS and usability and the better battery - the SD is the best handheld PC hands down right now. Getting that sweet glossy model as matte panels and OLED just don't go well together and it's not like I need to play on the beach with the sun behind me.
Legion go left the chat
I just like how when a new product comes, all the issues with the old one are on the spotlight. But those same issues were never mentioned in their original review.
