I've made 4 of these now and added pockets, handles and little grab tabs either side of the zip. For the pockets I just took a 10 inch square piece of fabric, folded it in half right sides facing, sewed a seam on 2 of the edges, turned it right side round, ironed it ironing in the unsewn edge so it looks like the other edges then sewed this on to the bag inner before you started sewing the bag together with the long edge facing the top. You just sew the sides and bottom 2mm from the edge which finishes off the unsewn seam (don't put that seam to the top.) I also sewed a line of thread from top to bottom part way along the pocket dividing the pocket in to 2 pockets. For handles 2 of my bags had plastic/ leather handles with ready made holes at either end that I sewed on the outers before sewing the bag together, the other 2 had straps made from approx 3cm wide webbing tape that I stitched to either side from the very bottom seam of the bag approx 6 inches from the left edge to just below the line where the top corners are cut off (so the flat finished top of the bag has no handle attached to it), leave a free loop for the handle then back down the same side of the outer 6 inches from the right edge down to the bottom edge. Repeat on the other side. Also do this before sewing the bag together. Brilliant bags. Thanks for the idea.
I love this tutorial. I’ve watched it a few times now. I haven’t made the bag as I would really love a version with a handle or something to give a more portable version. Thank you for all your wonderful tutorials
I have worked w patterns for 6 decades, I have designed patterns for 5 decades. Working w what you have and having that be your guide is so foreign to me I tried to make a pattern for this bag which meant I would have to go buy a lot of stuff. That did not seem to fall into what you were trying to teach me. So I pulled from my stash, removed a zipper from an old dress in the scrap bag, matched up pieces of med weight interfacing and patch worked it in. I ran out of thread and continued using colors that would work w whatever I already had on spools or bobbins and I did not hesitate to mix them. You are a genius and I am a good student. My bag is beautiful. I did add coordinating fabric made with interfacing and batting in one big circle, laid it out in figure eight and made sure the handles would be the right length running up the bag while spreading out underneath for maximum support. Yes, it took me a good portion of the day as I had to hunt, piece, deconstruct and reconstruct. I did use broadcloth for the inside for strength and soft hand cotton for its beautiful pastel florals for outside. My bag is washable, made from materials purchased in the '80s and '90s so no money was used at this time. I haven't had this much fun in a decade. thank you for the joy you gifted me.
This a great video tutorial that goes at just the right pace to see each detail of construction as you follow along. Thank you. If possible I’d like to see a tutorial on attaching wooden pole handles in the construction of this bag. I have found a picture of such a craft bag but no tutorial video.
I can't even sew, just basic buttons and things but I found this soothing and satisfying to watch someone make something so lovely and useful. Pretty, useful bag, I'd love one. Thanks for posting.
I really love how this bag turned out. I’ve never seen a zipper done this way - cutting out the top corners. I love how easy it looks to make this way. I think I will either use DecorBond or Foam to give the bag stability. Also a strap on the side for carrying. Cutting out all four pieces is a time saver and gives you the most use of your fabric. Thank you for always teaching me a new way to make things. I really love how you made this bag! Excellent job of making and explaining.🤗💕🧵🛍💕🤗
Hi Laura, Love this bag and have already made 3 of them. I have been making picnic quilts for each of my grandkids and have made one of these bags for to put each quilt in. They can keep this in the trunks of their cars always ready for a quick picnic or should you need a blanket in your car. Love how easy all your tutorials are to follow. Thanks
Aww what a great idea! What a sweet Gramma to make something like that for them too. Im a late bloomer (65) and didnt start sewing till in the past three years and im loving it. I have 7 grandchildren, two that would love something like that. Thanks for the great idea.
I have made several bags from your instructions all different sizes. I inserted a wrist strap in the side of the small bag and a webbing handle in the larger ones. These make great project bags for knitting. I added pockets to the inside too. Thank you.
Great large bag tutorial! Nice and roomy, and the addition of a zipper is a big plus. Coordinating fabric handles would make it all the better. Can't wait to try this project!!!!! Thanks again, Laura!
You explain so clearly. You lost me a little when you started to do the 2nd half of the zipper, but I'll pick it up when I'm doing the project.... I'd like some straps, so have to figure out how to do that. Really amazing.
I followed this tutorial and my bag came out great! I don't have much experience with sewing (just took high school sewing classes) and even I was able to make this bag! Attaching the lining to the zipper was the most confusing part for me since I'm not experienced, but I did it and it looks fantastic and so professional, thank you! Your instructions were very clear. I even adjusted the measurements to make it larger and it still turned out amazing :)
Lot of videos on UA-cam showing how to add pockets to almost anything. I've made several bags already, customizing them with a bunch of pockets and handles. This looks like another great bag I can customize for my loom knitting projects. The last bag I made was a large bag that was two-toned as a gift for a friend. It's always fun to figure out for myself what kind of pockets will be best. Thanks Laura!
Love the idea about using the cardboard roll for ironing seam open! Hmmm. would love to add straps/handles to this bag... that way we could take the project w/us when traveling! but love the bag!
What a lovely lot of materials making a great knitting bag flower, but if your daughter is anything like me, a set of handles needed for when our knitting becomes portable and goes where we go. I love all crafts because i was lucky enough to have a wonderful and talented lady called my mum, who taught me everything and of course the proper way to finish things off. The closing of the last hole would be the only thing that mum would have done differently from yourself, but it is so nice to see someone take such a keen need for things not just to be purposeful, but for them to be finished properly inside and out. Your daughter is a very lucky young lady to have such a talented person in her life to call mum. Thank you flower for a great video on a decent size bag/ Crafty hugs from Norah, Central Scotland
Laura I made this when I had a knitting project (poncho) that was too big for the bags I already have. It turned out great and I'm now going to make more as gifts. Your directions are always so easy to follow -- thank you!
I agree, this is a great tutorial. I would make several of these if there was an option for handles/straps. Inner or outer pockets would be nice for customization as well.
I add inner pockets by cutting additional strips of fabric, finishing the edges, and sewing them to the bottom of the lining pieces after the corners are cut but before any of the pieces are sewn together. I add a strap by sewing little loops of strap material with D rings into the top corners when they get sewn together, then clipping a longer strap on to the outside when the bag is complete.
I was looking for a nice diy to make a bag for my baby’s stroller and I finally found it. My favorite part is that I don’t have to play with measurements! 🙌🏻 Thank you so much!
I love the way you do the zip as it looks so neat. Clear straightforward instructions for me to follow easily with lots of good tips like the cardboard tube for pressing the seams. Would love a tutorial showing how to attach handles for carrying. Thanks.
Yes, a large roomy storage bag. I would add removable handles with D-rings. And pockets for the small things that like to get away from me. Thanks for sharing, Laura ♥️
I like the how all the seams are sewn and pulled it out from the zipper opening. This large sized bag will be perfect for my prayer shawl project. The zipper will keep the cat out of the bag! TFS. I love your style of tutorials!
I love how you've only kept the necessary bits in the vid, explained everything & why etc. If only all sewing channels explained it as well as you do!!
SewVeryEasy, Thank you! I’m an avid crocheter but, a beginner sewer and would love to know how to add a zippered pocket and side handles for my crocheting projects.
SewVeryEasy just wondering if you ever uploaded that video on how to add handles to this bag? I couldn’t find it anywhere. I really want to make this bag, but without knowing how to add handles, I’m going to have to pass. 😔
I am so glad I found your channel! I am a beginner and was getting so frustrated with other sewing tutorials that were unclear and convoluted. I can tell you have taught before because your videos are awesome and your technique is so polished. You're my favorite sewing Queen!
Loved your pink/green fabric. I think this needs some tabs at each end to help open/close the zipper and maybe a carry handle. Have a great Easter weekend and hope you get some sewing time :)
Thank you for making a bag with top squared corners. I want to make bags for storing seasonal clothes & handbags. I’ll line them up side by side on the top shelf of my closet, SO PRETTY. I’ll quilt my pieces to give them more body and add small side handle loops to make it easier to handle them. That fabric is gorgeous plus what a wonder tip for cutting that fabric. Im a new sewer and have been looking for a practical useful project. Great Christmas gift idea as well💜
I LOVE your delivery! Everything follows in logical order and I'm able to sew in my mind as you're explaining. Love your style too. Always gorgeous fabrics. Many thanks.'
Just what I was looking for. Your use of squares and rectangles in your videos so I don't have to fiddle with pattern pieces is much appreciated. I bet a carrying strap would fit well in those two top corner seams.
Excellent tutorial!!!! It was exactly what I was looking for and your instructions so clear! The tips and method for sewing decorative ends on the zipper and sewing corners are spot on. Thank you!
Love ❤️ the bag. I really like how you explain the procedure. Beautiful 🤩 fabric. So you have a video of a bag like that that has handles. I really like the bigness of it. Thanks Laura your a blessing.
I am also a knitter and a crocheter and a couple of bags like this would come in very handy. I will definitely be making some of theses in the future. Thanks for this tutorial.
Your tutorials are so helpful and inspiring. I feel like I can do just about ANYTHING after I watch your explanations! Thank you so much for your clarity and precision and easy explanations. Hoping to make a bag for my serger with this pattern. I will search to find out how to add feet, handles, and a hard bottom to the bag . So excited!
I really enjoyed this tutorial, excellent instructions and very clear details.... a great project bag for my crochet. Thank you ☺️ for taking the time to share!
This is the first of your videos I have watched. I have sewn since I was 6 or 7 (family business and my dad did not believe in child labor laws). I am finally getting my craft room in order after a big move. Anyway, just trying to say I've had a lot of experience and watched many videos. I have NEVER come across one so clear, concise, and cheerful (but not OTT). Thank you for sharing.
Hi Laura, Still love making this bag for the picnic quilts I make for each of my grandkids. I just finished quilt #6. Sometimes the bag didn't open wide enough and I had trouble getting the blanket in. I found a tutorial on a wide opening zipper (the end hangs off) (Marie's Scrappy Creations). Boy, I love this extra wide opening, the quilt slips right in. Hard to believe that little bit makes such a difference. This is still my favorite project bag. Sorry I couldn't add a picture. But I use the extra scraps from the quilt for the outside and 2 FQ for the inside. Love using up my scraps.
Love love love your so specific directions and videos! Your projects are so detailed and perfect! Even down to the ‘panic button’ I’m ready to push when the corners at the top turn out looking messy! But, as you say, with a 1/2 inch seam allowance, no one is going to know ! Love it!
Really gorgeous bag. Thanks for a great tutorial Laura. I think that I will add short handles to help carry it or maybe a long shoulder strap. I could take it anywhere with me.
It's brilliant! I might add a tab in the side seam for carrying, but I love your take on zipper ends and using the he fat quarters. Thanks Laura, I'm going to make one for myself!! ❤️
I just finished doing this bag and it turned out awesome! I got a little tripped up with attaching the fabric to the zipper and had to redo it a few times but I love the finished project! Thanks so much for the awesome video tutorial.
Wow thank you so much for helping me make this bag. I'm an avid knitter and the bag is perfect for a large project. I haven't seen for 30 years so feeling very happy. Bless you.
Gorgeous bag and colors, I'd love to make a tote bag like that, I have 5 placemats that I'm taking apart and are already interfaced, I'm going to cut them into big squares and sew alternating colors, then top stich trimming over the seams and make a color block tote bag! 😄
I second that emotion love the way that bag came out I'm planning to travel to Puerto Rico have the right fabric just for that bag I want to add batting to make it a carry on bag love to add straps to it plus add the suitcase handle holder in the back to store the bag on the suit case take it on the plane 🥰🤗
Laura, really enjoyed your talk Wednesday at Chatham Kent Quilt Guild. Now I have a lot more projects, I really need more time. Especially liked your tip on straightening a panel with a “wonky “ border..so clever!
Thank you for the Large Knitting Bag, it works well with me storing "some" of my "stuff". I'm making the Large Basket Bag next. I may have to make some for my sister and your shopping outings. I'm looking at some of your other projects.....so on to the next tutorial. Thanks, having funnnn
pockets would be easy to sew as squares to the lining pieces before you close the bag, and a strap could probably fit nicely in the top two corner seams.
hi I have been watching all your older videos tr trying to catch up and I am loving them I love how you teach wish you would do a retreat that would be fun
Love this bag and the easy level. A little disappointed about no suggestions of pockets or straps. Would have loved to hear your thoughts. Thanks for the videos...I watch them all.
Sarah Ehret the two ends of each strap for a long handle was attached at the upper part, on each side of the bag I made. Sorry, I was not successful posting the photo of the gifted bag I made. I love Laura’s instruction videos.
Beautiful ❤️ will make this for my granddaughter, who will be going off to college this year. I will put handles and maybe some fusible fleece with some quilting. Thank you.
OK OK OK...I have to say, You sure helped me streamline a few steps in a project bag, THANK YOU!!! See , not only is it a bit faster and easier But(!) there was one simple difference that will help me remember every time. I'm continually recovering from a B.I.. I can do something 10 times in a row then a few days later I need to stop and look it up as I'd either forgotten completely or I'd be suddenly confused at part of the process. I have faith with crochet therapy(which is what the lord drew me to and with hour upon hour of month after month of a simple sc I could speak comprehend and draw on knowledge that was locked away. This is another reason i'm learning to sew..Again. I could continue because it's a wonderful testimony but I'll digress. I did want to ask you if you have another bag like this that has pockets, divider, and a tab for handle strap? I'm so hoping you do. (I'm really new to your channel) It would be wonderful to see what else you make easy as well as to learn a few other things I'd really enjoy adding to a Project bag. Thank You , Your time and efforts are so greatly appreciated. God Bless you and Happy Easter
What beautiful fabric. I love your bags and tutorials Laura and the care and detail you take when making things. I shall be making this bag for sure, and the beach bag you demonstrated with side pockets. Thank you very much Laura. Happy Easter, Linda from England x
Laura, I am new to your channel, and already I am hooked! I enjoy your creative talent and FANTASTIC tips particuliar video! You are clear succint and easy to follow. Awesome job !
I made this bag as a gift for a knitting friend. She knits a lot of sweaters so a bigger bag like this is perfect. I knit a lot of socks and shawls so I'm going to make one for myself that isn't quite so big. I think it's just a matter of a smaller zipper.
Did like to make one as a weekend bag but always get confused with handles. Can you do a tutorial on putting on carry handles and a shoulder strap please Laura. I made a teepee as per your video last year and am making another in may. It was brilliant. Xxxx Brenda London UK
This would be great with foam, because it would be stiff enough to stand. And there are a variety of ways that you would make handles. Nice pattern! Easy, and very roomy. Needs some pockets though.
I just made a bag with fusible foam and love how it stands up and is more ridged. I think expanding on this easy to make bag will make a great travel bag.
Handles are a must have imo. A pocket or two would be helpful for a project bag too. Overall a very cute bag. I like that it's large and two toned and has the deep gussets (I think that's what they are called) making the bag also wide.
I've made 4 of these now and added pockets, handles and little grab tabs either side of the zip. I did use broadcloth for the inside for strength and soft hand cotton for its beautiful pastel florals for outside. Thank you for sharing this with me. My hope with the videos is just that!!! The sizes are not important, it is all about the technique :) good job!
This a great video tutorial that goes at just the right pace to see each detail of construction as you follow along. Thank you. If possible I’d like to see a tutorial on attaching wooden pole handles in the construction of this bag. I have found a picture of such a craft bag but no tutorial video.

I like the technique you used to close up the two top ends - different than I’ve seen before. It’s a nice clean finish.
Laura ,This is a great way to finish those zipper ends! They are so professional looking!
I was going to say the same thing!
I love the way you do the zip as it looks so neat. Clear straightforward instructions for me to follow easily with lots of good tips like the cardboard tube for pressing the seams. Would love a tutorial showing how to attach handles for carrying. Thanks.
I loved the bag, you teach me something every time you make a project.
I am so grateful to have you, as a teacher.
I bought a bundle of fat quarters just because I loved the fabric. Now I have a project for them!
EXCEPT that the cat will probably sleep atop the bag and you will hate to disturb your furry friend! Cats rule!
the two squares at the top of the bag are genius!!!!! Thanks!
I would have never thought about that!!
I love how you've only kept the necessary bits in the vid, explained everything & why etc. If only all sewing channels explained it as well as you do!!
Thank you! This is the best sewing tutorial I have seen. Really impressed with the pressing tips.
Concise tutorial. I love a project that isn't wordy and redundant! Well done, Laura.
Love it!
The only thing I would change is adding handles.
But this is exactly what I've been looking for!
A lined bag with 4 boxes corners. Brilliant!
Thanks for the feed back :) ... because of your comment and many others, I will be doing another video with handles and pockets. Stay tuned :)

Love ❤️ the bag. I really like how you explain the procedure. Beautiful 🤩 fabric. So you have a video of a bag like that that has handles. I really like the bigness of it. Thanks Laura your a blessing.

Have you found out how to add handles?
I really enjoyed this tutorial, excellent instructions and very clear details.... a great project bag for my crochet. Thank you ☺️ for taking the time to share!
I love the zipper finishing! So simple but so good looking.
Thanks Laura this will make a perfect knitting bag for my Mum and your very clear and simple instructions are so easy to follow.

Hi Laura, Still love making this bag for the picnic quilts I make for each of my grandkids. I just finished quilt #6. Really gorgeous bag. Thanks for a great tutorial Laura. I think that I will add short handles to help carry it or maybe a long shoulder strap. I could take it anywhere with me.
Awesome bag! Really love the fabric choices. Thanks for sharing. You are a great teacher.
Great bag and NO handles needed. I am a sweater knitter and a sewer and it is a perfect project bag as shown. Thank you.
Most of us would prefer handles, however. Especially for a larger bag like this.
It's brilliant! I might add a tab in the side seam for carrying, but I love your take on zipper ends and using the he fat quarters. Thanks Laura, I'm going to make one for myself!! ❤️
Love it! Gonna try this but will definitely add handles, the choice of fabrics were heavenly! This would make a lovely beach bag too x thanks! X
Your manner of teaching is excellent! I’ve never done a flat top on a project bag, but I will try it now! Thanks so much!
Very nice, real easy to follow your instructions, maybe she did not want handles, but I would've added handles, a strap or something..W/d rings.
Nice, but I don't find bags very handy without shoulder straps and pockets. Love how the zipper and flat top is done.
I just finished doing this bag and it turned out awesome! I got a little tripped up with attaching the fabric to the zipper and had to redo it a few times but I love the finished project! Thanks so much for the awesome video tutorial.
Excellent instructions for making a basic bag in any size. Zipper insertion always confusing for beginners. Next video pockets, ☺️
I love how you do your box corners. So much better than most
Love that bag. You make things look so easy to make. Tks Laura for all your nice demonstrations. 🌹❤️🌹❤️
Wow thank you so much for helping me make this bag. I'm an avid knitter and the bag is perfect for a large project. I haven't seen for 30 years so feeling very happy. Bless you.
this is the 2nd large project bag I've made and again it was foolproof. Thanks so much for a fab video - I will be back to make more xxx
Top job Laura! Great colour combination. Easy to follow. Thank you ! 👍❤️️😘😍
Thank you Laura. I love this bag pattern. Very handy for storing or toting so many things. Love the boxed tops as well. Great idea.
Gorgeous bag and colors, I'd love to make a tote bag like that, I have 5 placemats that I'm taking apart and are already interfaced, I'm going to cut them into big squares and sew alternating colors, then top stich trimming over the seams and make a color block tote bag! 😄
I like this bag. Your tutorials are always so detailed and easy to follow. Thank you, Laura!
I love all the great ideas you come up with...Thank you Laura
The colors and size are beautiful! She will really enjoy using this bag.
Although I'm mainly a quilter I do love to make bags! Beautiful fabric, great tutorial!
I love your clear instructional videos. We are currently changing a garden shed into a lovely sewing room. You will be with me on my kindle.
Laura, really enjoyed your talk Wednesday at Chatham Kent Quilt Guild. Now I have a lot more projects, I really need more time. Especially liked your tip on straightening a panel with a “wonky “ border..so clever!
I had a lot of fun too
THANK YOU this is perfect for a gift. My cousin just started knitting. Thank you fir this video.
I don’t like zippers or Velcro next to my knitting projects because I have had bad experiences with zippers and Velcro! I love the size of your bag!
Very cute fabric & like the boxy shape - I think it needs handles.
Really nice bag, very handy but suggestions of pockets and straps ?
pockets would be easy to sew as squares to the lining pieces before you close the bag, and a strap could probably fit nicely in the top two corner seams.
hi I have been watching all your older videos tr
trying to catch up and I am loving them I love how you teach wish you would do a retreat that would be fun
Only just found this video I love it. I have learned to make numerous projects from your videos so Thank you
What an incredible teacher! Thank you for helping me make my bag with success!😃
Love this bag and the easy level. A little disappointed about no suggestions of pockets or straps. Would have loved to hear your thoughts. Thanks for the videos...I watch them all.
I need straps. Much easier to pick up for me. Love the size!
blairlj add your handles to the outside of the bag before adding the lining.
@@jjoy7 thanks for the suggestion. They are many types I could add...just like to hear her suggestions...she always has great ideas.
@@jjoy7 Could you post exactly how/where you added the handles?
Sarah Ehret the two ends of each strap for a long handle was attached at the upper part, on each side of the bag I made. Sorry, I was not successful posting the photo of the gifted bag I made. I love Laura’s instruction videos.
Very nicely explained. Easy to follow. Lovely bag. I might make one for my 🧶 knitting thank you
Beautiful ❤️ will make this for my granddaughter, who will be going off to college this year. I will put handles and maybe some fusible fleece with some quilting. Thank you.
Thank you for this tutorial! You explain the process so well. I love bag patterns!
Kathleen Champ I don't have a B.I., and still have to look things up over and over again. So you're in good company😃
You are incredible! So easy to follow and such a great teacher!
Lovely bag and great choice of colours also like your instructions on the zipper
Thank you so much, you have explained this so clearly making it so easy to follow. One of the best demo video's I have seen (and I have seen many!).
What beautiful fabric. I love your bags and tutorials Laura and the care and detail you take when making things. I shall be making this bag for sure, and the beach bag you demonstrated with side pockets. Thank you very much Laura. Happy Easter, Linda from England x
Did you ever do the tutorial with handles and pockets? I would LOVE to be able to see that. Thanks so much. Your tutorials are awesome💕
Thx for a new and quicker bag. I guess the handles could go in the top end squares.
Where and how?
Laura, I am new to your channel, and already I am hooked! I enjoy your creative talent and FANTASTIC tips particuliar video! You are clear succint and easy to follow. Awesome job
!
I LUV IT!!! 😍😍😍 I will add handy dandy straps when I attempt this. 😀 Thank you for the idea, I have TONS of fat quarters to select from.
some sort of handle would be nice. love the color combination.
Love how you teach, easy for me to follow. Thank you so much, sew very easy 😊😊😊😊❤️
Xxxx

Have you figured out how to make handles?
This would be great with foam, because it would be stiff enough to stand. And there are a variety of ways that you would make handles. Nice pattern! Easy, and very roomy. Needs some pockets though.
How/where would I add handles?
Add foam and handles and you have a great carry-on,
I just made a bag with fusible foam and love how it stands up and is more ridged. I think expanding on this easy to make bag will make a great travel bag.
I was waiting on the handles.
Me too on the handles. I think I am going to take out some Sean’s and add the handles.
Handles are a must have imo. A pocket or two would be helpful for a project bag too. Overall a very cute bag. I like that it's large and two toned and has the deep gussets (I think that's what they are called) making the bag also wide.
I love this bag and I appreciate the detailed tutorial. I want to make one right now and I think that I want to add some handles.
