    Perhaps the reason that the Captain was never sent to the front was that he had a weak heart.

    Robin saying "I've been here a long time. I'm ready. I wanna see what's next." broke my heart.

    The Captain line dancing may be one of the most adorable things I have ever seen, I shall miss him. Good work Ben.

    This is tied for my favorite episode of the season with the April Fool's episode.
    I loved the Captain bit. I think we all did. it was so touching and sweet. And I do agree that I don't think that he necessarily had a romantic relationship with Havers at the time (it would have been inappropriate at the time not just because of gayness but because the Captain was his commanding officer, and he was a stickler for the correct military behavior). But that he and Havers had feelings for each other and a deep affection that they didn't act on is what I read into it.
    My one criticism of the Captain's story before I get to the most interesting part, was that I kind of wanted to see what it was he was like when he wasn't in a military role Relatives who were in touch with him, or friends, or the emptiness of a life where he didn't know what to do. I would have liked a minute or two of screen time for that to bring things into focus of what his life had for him or didn't have for him. We know what the others had, generally. But not him.
    The most interesting thing to me, I think, is that the Captain knows he's gay and is okay with it. Or at least that's what I took away from his last minutes with Havers. He doesn't talk about it, possibly because he doesn't find romance an appropriate topic of discussion. But he knew he loved Havers and wasn't confused, and in the end Havers responded in a way that showed he loved the Captain. Perhaps they even did have a conversation at some point about their feelings and their inability to act on them, perhaps not. But yeah. I've always thought from the jokes that the Captain wasn't comfortable with his orientation, but I guess, at least at the end, he was.
    Meanwhile I kind of love that he died of shame, essentially. You didn't really go into it, and perhaps you've never heard the term, but there's this thing called Stolen Valor when someone tries to pass themselves off as being in the military when they're not, or when they try to claim military accomplishments that belong to another man. It's tone of the worst things you can do that's a military-specific thing. And so the Captain died with stolen valor by taking the other man's awards and pinning them on his chest, and everyone in that room knew he did it, and probably assumed that's all there was to the story (he wanted to go to the ball, but hadn't been invited, something that gives his turn as the fairy godmother more depth too). Everyone around him other than Havers, who probably knew why he really did it (sounds like it from their goodbye) would assume he was a most shameful disgrace of a soldier. And he has to wear his disgrace pinned over his heart for eternity. And even he, I think, is ashamed of it, and only did it to see Havers. That's the real shame in his death that he confessed. Also gives a lot more interesting texture to the time that Pat gave him an imaginary badge when they went camping. He then had a real award for something he really did. And if I recall his hand moved to put the badge on his chest.
    Totally agree on him having Havers' stick as having a piece of Havers so that he's kind of not alone for eternity. He got the stick, but lost his hat and his pipe. And was there something else on the ground with him? I can't remember.
    Oh, and aside from the mirror representing the reversed honors on his chest, I also think it represents a kind of torture for him that he has to look at himself but wrong (thus the cracks in the mirror in the opening). He can't bear to look at himself. Though I'm holding out some slim hope still that he might be visible in mirrors and not know it.
    On the overall Carpe Diem, I loved everyone enjoying their last day on Earth. Julian was what I would expect, though I loved the clubbing with the plague ghosts.
    I like Kitty trying to save Humphry superhero style. It kind of follows the through line of Spider-man from the Pineapple Day episode. And maybe Kitty will move on soon. I think she's really coming into her own as a person this season. And I like her helping Humphrey. It sometimes seems like the other ghosts don't do that enough.
    I liked what Fanny was doing. And it's left me kind of hoping with get more Fanny for Christmas. We hear a lot about her story, but we haven't seen that much on the actual screen, so my fingers are crossed that she gets to be the central Ghost character before the end of the show since she's only ever had one other flashback episode. I'd like to see just a bit more of young Fanny taking over Button House and maybe conquering society or something.
    As for the ending, I love it. Yes, it's Achy Breaky Heart, but it's joyful. And I love how even Mike gets to participate. If the season had ended here, I'd have said it was a perfect end, and whatever does happen next, it's the scene I'll replay, I think, when I want to think of them all dancing on into the future together.

      I had another thought I'm going to add here just because I think it's interesting in a story dissection way. I love how the Captain's story ends up paralleling Thomas's story, but with a different ending.
      Thomas's ego is so big that his bluster loses him the girl he was in love with (or thinks he was in love with, Romantics weren't known for their consistency) and gets him killed. His ego was more important to him than love.
      The Captain, in the end, sacrifices his pride and his ego (stolen valor and shame) to see his true love, and while it kills him in the end, his love is also requited.
      Considering both men died at the end, I'd say the Captain's was the happier and more hopeful ending. And I suspect he'll get sucked off long before Thomas, who is still buried under the weight of his ego in most things, though he is improving.

    I have soooooo many thoughts about this episode but one joke I wanted to point out was when Robin discovered the pattern and he saw all the secrets to the universe or whatever there’s a little “maff?” that flies on screen and I think that’s SO funny I loved that bit a lot lmao.
    The Captain’s death of course hit me hard, but especially due to the secondhand embarrassment that I got from it. (That whole situation is a nightmare to me) I’m very glad that the Captain didn’t die due to his sexuality (I knew the idiots wouldn’t do something like that, but the fear was still there) and the tender moment he had with Havers was so sweet and incredibly heartbreaking. That scene mixed with the anxiety of the ghosts moving on made for a very emotional episode but it was very well done!
    The ending with the line dancing was very fun and *very* ghosts lol (although now I have achy breaky heart stuck in my head for like weeks now)

    The most emotional episode across the whole series, even more than when Mary got sucked off. I loved how much each ghost felt like they were dealing with what Robin thought. This was the most interesting character development I've seen in the show, and obviously Captain left me in tears. The closing shot of them all line dancing was the sweetest thing I've ever seen. I can't help but think that this should have been the final episode, with the actual final episode the second to last, as this felt like a stronger conclusion. I would have loved to have seen how Allison would have responded to everything going on, as her separate story felt quite unnecessary to me. This could have been one the greatest final episodes in BBC history, but still. I also can't help but feel cheated that nobody moved on, and that the clip from the trailers was just another ghost moving on. I think either Robin or Humphrey should move on, which would allow the actor to be only in one place (for the Christmas specials), and be quite emotional, as I think they got the most development that series.

    My favourite episode of the series. I loved the way each of the ghosts dealt with the possibility of it being their final day in the house- either by typical behaviour (like Julian trying for one last fling) or showing development (obviously the Captain is a big example there). I liked how Thomas was shown here. We started out with his usual self absorbed lament not being recognised as a great poet, and moved through to being quite vulnerable in his fear of not being remembered. The fact that he genuinely apologises for his behaviour and is able to show a self awareness that he's not often been capable of is a nice touch. His hug with Pat was so sweet (even if he did forget to be careful of the arrow!)
    We had a bit of a speculation about the Captain before we watched and I called it for him dying by heart attack (although pretty much everyone saw rhat coming) but I was holding out for his name ro be Jeremy. (We had different names picked. We were all wrong!) At least it began with a J though! That line dance - I never knew I needed it in my life until I saw it!

    The fact that the Captain's honors were upside down during the entirety of Ghosts tells me that they must have planned his death scene this way from the start. I find that really impressive! I had a theory that Cap might have died after being cruelly (and possibly publicly) rejected by Havers upon reuniting with him. I'm glad they didn't go that route! I think it's fair to say that Havers asked for the transfer in order to separate himself from James. He knew if their relationship went any farther, it would be disastrous for both of them. 😢

      Either they planned his death scene from the start or the production made a mistake with the honours being upside down and had to come up with an in universe reason when fans pointed it out!
      Either way I'm so glad Havers didn't reject him

      @thejintymyster6396 Awesome! Thanks, I love that. It's so great when the details of a story arc are thoughtfully planned and not just made up as the story goes along. I'm not knocking them, but Kitty's story seemed a bit like they didn't have an ending planned and they went for something fans weren't expecting. But I could be totally wrong!

      @@UDKeyes At a BFI event a few years ago, Matt said that they had to change something because people on the internet had guessed it correctly. In episode 3 of the Inside Ghosts podcast he also said that they felt like Kitty's sister poisoning her was too obvious so they had to rethink it
      I don't know if they've since confirmed it was Kitty's desth

    • @UDKeyes
      @UDKeyes 8 місяців тому +3

      @thejintymyster6396 Ah, very interesting. Well, to be fair, up until the Pineapple episode, the sister was really the only suspect that they had given any motive to. I thought the spider bite was kinda blah. A nefarious plot would have been more interesting. Not that I would have preferred Kitty suffered...
      Also, I thought it was odd that Kitty died while still wearing her fancy party dress. Surely a maid would have changed her into some kind of nightgown when she was taken ill? I think that is also a result of a possible plot rewrite.

    Definitely the best episode this series! Not that the others were bad- just this one had so much!
    I like the fact that subtly in this series Barclay seems to be slightly more human and less exploitative than when we first met him....still no angel of course....but I think he seems to somehow relate more to Alison and Mike now they are becoming more mature family types, rather than young innocents to be exploited.

    Very tragic and romantical yet beautiful that they did get to see eachother and got to let eachother know, and that it was mutual. The line dancing was such a welcome closing out, just what was needed. The emotional roller coaster of the potential leaving of someone and the thoughts provoked by that were very strong too. Such a great episode yet again. These writers are the best! So good since season 1, every episode a great episode, they are so very talented!

    What I found interesting was that you could see in the book that The Captain's name started with J, or maybe I (the false burn on one of the pages didn't cover it), so I sort of guessed it would probably be James?

    • @jenniferhanses
      @jenniferhanses 8 місяців тому +1

      Not Jonathan or Jack or Joseph or Joshua or Jasper or Jason or Justin? I'd add Julian to the list, which might explain why they always called him the Captain as being less confusing than having two Julians. But I think those were all common names of the time to rival James.

      @lrrroftheplanetomicronpersei8 8 місяців тому +2

      @@jenniferhanses Yeah that would've been funny if he was called Julian. Dunno just James was the first thing that came to mind for the time/character

    • @---fi2ml
      @---fi2ml 8 місяців тому

      @@jenniferhansesthe only names of those that really rival James in popularity for the time would have been John (a bit more popular) or Joseph (a bit less) from what I can tell, and I think it was important to them that his name was very generic and didn't stand out. I also thought of James, I think it suits him for some reason.
      common-ness aside, I don't think it would have been right for his name to be Julian though as I think the motivation for calling him captain being "so we know which Julian we mean" would take some of the impact away from the "because that's always how he introduces/refers to himself, because the military was his life and he hasn't moved on" angle
      out of interest, does he have a surname?

    Brilliant video, love to hear your thoughts. Both this and the last episode of the series made me and my family have a proper little cry, I knew that the Captain's death would be emotional and I always wondered how they would do it, but they did it sooo well. I wonder if the fans ever will switch to calling the Captain James by the way? I've tried, but I always default to Captain.

    I don't think the ribbon was the wrong way around because Captain put them on in a hurry. It's considered respectful when wearing another person's medal ribbon for it to be the wrong way around which the writers would have known and probably decided they needed to work a logical reason for it into the storyline.

    youre not reading into it too much with the first name thing, lol. the creators have acknowledged how important and personal the use of the first names in that scene is, and it makes sense as its something that was concealed throughout most of the series, so becomes a neat metaphor for the other aspects of him that go unsaid. in fiction of course his name wouldnt have been a secret, it would have been on his official papers and documents and other officers would have called him captain [name], but from our perspective as a viewer were taught to view it almost as taboo. the captain and havers saying eachothers names, and being the only ones to do so, shows us that they see eachother completely, even the parts hidden from others. definitely intentional
