ghosts, BBC, television, horrible histories, yonderland, idiot six, idiot 6, tv, video essay, university, film and tv, film studies, button house, Alison, Thomas Thorne, the captain, robin, kitty, mary, julian, pat, humphry, mike, plague ghosts, fanny, Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, Ben Willbond, Katy Wix, Lolly Adefope, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Charlotte Ritchie, Tom Kingsley, Jennifer Saunders
I honestly really wish The Captain/Kitty were in this video, their relationship so honestly so wholesome and it’s really like a father/daughter relationship. The Captain is always there to support her when she’s upset and likes messing around with her and being playful, which he never really gets with anyone else.
That was shown very much in the last episode. It was lovely
otp in a found family way
For a second I thought you meant Captain/Kitty as in a romnatic way and my smile dropped.
In defence of Thomas, when he suggests killing Alison, I think it's generally accepted that the ghosts struggle to understand the severity of killing livings because they've been dead for so long. It could make them a bit nihilistic - like, you're going to die anyway, why does it matter if its a bit sooner? Julian and Robin also casually suggest (or follow up on) killing mike/Alison, so I think it's a ghost thing, not a predatory thing.
Lady b is prone to flights of fancy. Remember she was swooning over Mike at one point before her dalliance with humphrey. It's always a 2 minute wonder with Stephanie. Something always seems to happen to make her realise she's made a mistake. Still, as you say, it's good to see her being more girlish/flirty at times. Always good to see a different side to someone's character
Yeah 100% i love seeing Fanny being carefree and happy. I imagine thats how she would have been if she wasnt forced in to marrying George
If Kitty loves Alison it’s almost like a kid having a crush on their babysitter or something like that. Because it’s very much a one way thing. Even though Alison clearly likes Kitty it’s not nearly as strongly as Kitty likes Alison.
Idea for season 4. The ghosts discover Tik tok and Julian and Captain here the sound that goes " we'll call them close friends, besties, roommates, colleges anything but lovers"
Hahaha perfect!
And then the captain cries...HAVEEERRRRSSS
IM DYING🤣🤣🤣🤣
how could there be mike slander?! need to have a word with some people…
There was a fascinating tumblr post that Thomas (& the other ghosts) are stuck in the same emotional state as when (they) died. He died believing a grand desperate gesture would win him Isabelle's love, and was crushed that she did not see him even as he was dying. To be "stuck" in that heightened state gives context to his overtures with Alison. If only he gets (the next grand desperate gesture) right, then he will be happy...
Thomas & Isabelle were products of the Regency era.
If all had gone well, Thomas would have married (& been a father) with his flights of fancy tempered, and an overall maturer and wiser man.
As much as she grieved for Thomas, Isabelle had to "move on" & be practical as per society's expectations.
It would be interesting if Isabelle discovered the truth during her marriage (Francis's innate duplicity lending to other vices?). Very Count of Monte Cristo..
I agree with what you are saying, Thomas is a product of his time and stuck on grand gesture mode that caused his death. But as much as everyone says he is fickle and flights of fancy with who he loves I think he is actually stuck on his love for Isabelle. It is just over time he is shifting his affections to women who physically could be said to resemble some aspect of her. I say that as both Alison and Lucy are slim brunettes just like Isabelle was and he seems to fall for them on sight. So maybe it isn't as much as he falls in love at a drop of a hat with different women. It is the poor sod falling in love with the same woman over and over and over again as soon as he sees a physical reminder of her embodied in someone else and has no explanation on how he feels except to attribute that feeling to him being head over heels for the woman he is seeing an aspect of Isabelle in.
It would explain why he never has made a move on Kitty. She doesn't physically remind him of Isabelle. Because as much as she is an innocent and can be as dramatic as he is, she would be much more receptive to his big romantic gestures. Also she seems more willing to put up with him than anyone else, even if they didn't go any further physically. Which actually I could see Thomas accepting over time as long as his other feelings were validated as he is a product of his era.
@@fazzieman674 all excellent points especially Thomas's fixation on slim brunettes. He has a type 😅
I can see Kitty possibly flirting with Thomas in their early days, before their current dynamic as pseudo siblings. There's still potential for a future romance (Fanny & Humphreys body, anyone?😂) but I wouldn't be surprised if Kitty's fondness for Thomas over time became less romantic and more sympathetic to their shared sensitivity of being brushed aside by the brusqer ghosts in the house.
@@fabulousmyriad267 Oh agree that Kitty and Thomas can be much more clearly defined as pseudo siblings than any of the others as the series has gone on. Although at the beginning it could be said that her defending him was a little bit of a crush on her part as much as her defending her sort of put upon brother and like you I can see her trying to flirt with him in the beginning. But it seems implied that there has never been any other type of relationship between them even though Thomas is meant to get the hots for any woman that passes and him and Kitty have been in the same house for over 200 years together.
Just saying with Thomas' need to be loved by someone and Kitty's nature of just wanting to be noticed and them both being of a similar class and age and historically only separated by say 50-60 years, it is kind of strange that it is never mentioned that at some point he made some sort of overture towards her or just simply thought about taking her up on any little flirtations. Even if it is just the other ghosts saying that Kitty didn't really understand the implications of being hit on romantically even if it was for just for a few turns around the grounds or Thomas made a few declarations about thinking about it then decided not too.
Unless there is another reason like his 'type' getting in the way of him making any move on the other ghosts in the house for 200 years. Though with Mary we don't need to see why as you know if Thomas had hit on her Humphrey wouldn't be the only headless ghost we would see.
It is a bit of a blind spot with the two most needy ghosts in the place especially when the series does admit that the ghosts have dreams or urges they don't act on such as Pat admitting he had a sex dream about Fanny even if she did have Robin's head in it.
Not that I am saying to ship Thomas and Kitty, just it could be an interesting layer to Thomas' character - his infatuations are really him pining for the woman he died to impress but he's too blinkered to really get that. Just like the layers to Kitty's behaviour being a response to her family's treatment of her and instead of getting angry at them she is stuck like a little an innocent kid excusing them and wanting Alison as a sister replacement.
What a stupid theory.
Were Thomas and Isabelle actually lovers at one time or did they just admire each other from afar and occasionally danced with each other at balls and sent each other love letters? It may or may not have worked with Isabelle had his cousin not played them off against each other and her father would probably not have agreed to the match as Thomas wasn't earning much money.
justice for library chaps
EXACTLY!!!! they(capxjulian) are a interesting and plausible pairing
The idea that Thomas would murder Alison is absurd. Sure he floated the idea of her being dead like romeo and Julie but that's all it was - an idea. Most of Thomas's ideas stay ideas and are never put into action because he lives in his head. That's why he never really got together with isobel, the supposed love of his life.
And let's just remember it was Julian who pushed Alison out of the window not Thomas. I don't think Thomas would have pushed her even if he had the same ability as Julian. He's a man of honour and a strict moral code
Hahah nah i dont think he actually would! I was just using it as an example of the behaviour/attitude I'm not a big fan of.
TW
Like him asking her to k*il herself to be with him. I just don't like that, even if it is just one of his over the top ideas. Its the one part of thomas' character i dont like, otherwise hes great!
@@jamiedoestv yes I see what you mean, it shows a selfish side to his character but then again everyone's selfish sometimes
I feel like ppl are going to think I'm insane bc I've never seen anyone mention this ship but I was watching with someone and went "its a shame Humphrey hasn't been able to be happy with someone" and they replied "maybe he can get with the captain" and that blew my mind it strangely makes so much sense
That's...actually good......
When I first read this I was like "ya I don't really see it" but when I think about it it could really work as a more of a romantic sense
RIP Bunny and Barclay 😔😔😔
Robin and moonah are the best ship, though pat and the captain (papain?) are a close second
CAPTAIN × HAVERS
CAPTAIN × STRONG ARMED BUILDER
CAPTAIN × ADAM THE DIRECTOR
@@fionawilliams5477also captain x maddocks
everyone knows the TRUE otp of the show is robin x moonah
justice for Julian x the Captain
Exactly! but I also ship havers x captain
Honestly the pairing I find the most interesting is Humphrey and his body… because clearly the body has some sort of will of it’s own. What with punching it’s own head off when the Fanny relationship ended out of anger. (Granted I know it’s meant as a joke but still)
Also, Capvers all the way for me. I'll never get the Patcap thing.
Same
i wonder if the captain and julian might be an interesting pair? i could def see julian being bi/queer.....
I like the pairing of Robin and Julian. An unusual angle - a caveman who learned chess. Breaking down a stereotype there 😆
I 100% see Julian one day having sex or something with a guy to try it because he enjoys sex then ends up enjoying it
Hmmm interesting I havent seen much about that pairing but definitely think it could be something
Same

Personally I'd put Mary and Robin in the top tier, but then again I'm completely obsessed with that ship so
I see it as a case of people realising there could be something there but not acting on it as to not be weird around each other.
@@dubbingsync Thats actually a pretty good point
@Rhys Causon they actually did (to quote julian) get it onnnn. katy wix confirmed it
Havers was at the gate! What prevents the Captain getting close enough to meet every day?
Also, I like the way the American husband Jay interacts and helps Sam with the ghosts. I wish Mike is getting there, but plays the buffoon .
I feel like that was just The Captain reminiscing about Havers, like when you go back to a place with a strong emotional memory and you can almost see the event that happened there. I feel like Havers died on the front line rather than on the grounds, though if he did he must have moved on.
I don’t really see any of the ghosts having romantic relationships with eachother
I see them more as one big, if weird, family
Julian’s like a big brother (the kind that *isn’t* a good role) model (we see a funny sibling-like relationship with him and robin especially)
Robin’s like a younger brother
Kitty is the (little) sister Alison never had
Mary and Fanny are both like big sisters
Thomas seems like the middle-child that often, but not always, separates himself from the rest of the family
He’s basically the opposite of Julian, and I feel like if they were asked “who’s the worst person in the world?” They’d point at eachother
They’ve still got good chemistry though
Pat and the Captain are like dads (or like teachers)
Humphrey seems like everyone’s friend
He can’t always help you because he can’t move
But when he helps out, he helps out a lot
The plague ghosts are pretty much part of the house that they all live in
I hope that we get a new pairing for fanny in s4 because I see her as possibly lesbian
id def more put alison in a sister-like category with kitty, i mean its basically explicitly stated that that is how they view eachother.
imo thomas is pretty prone to lust in a more Julian -type way, but people weren't so open about those things in his time and as a romantic poet he probably rolls love and sexuality into one big metaphorical ball. his self image as noble and sensitive and in tune with ideas of "higher" desires wouldnt be at odds with any sexual attraction he might naturally feel, because he would probably use the language of love as a proxy to express those feelings.
plus, in that time the person you love, marry and reproduce with is supposed to be the only person you have sex with, so that also encourages him to equate love and physical attraction.
anyway idk why i went so hard on that tangent, but basically i think you could read thomas as a bit of a horndog. i mean he peeps at her in the shower, and chides himself with "curse these impetuous loins!"
i guess your thoughts on thomas/kitty would also be a no, based on what you said about kitty. but apparently the writers originally intended for there to be something there (albeit more as a schoolgirl crush on kittys end) which you can kinda see in the first episode before they seem to abandon it
This was so cute!
What do u think we will find out about the ghosts in series 4?
Oohh i dont know, hopefully more about Robin and Mary!
@@jamiedoestv oh yes, I still really want to know how Robin died. Also I want to know how kitty died
@@jamiedoestv i saw some bts of them filming mary’s backstory, possibly her death! on r1ch83 instagram are some great bts pics :)
@@robertk2194 I think Fanny got pushed out the window by her husband after she caught him with 2 men
@@heidicarter1481 oh wait, i meant kitty
Now please rank the relationships in TaskMaster. I'm sure we all know who takes the cake, but lol anyways
Don't really have a ranking but yours is good
part 2 with Robary
Ugh Cap(ha)vers hurts SO much more after s5e5 and the Button Archives. I dont care they only knew each other for like 2 months, LOOK AT THEM!!! argue with the wall, they love each other okay

13:00 I don't think that George was a horrible person as he was a gay man forced to marry a woman who he didn't like or was attracted to, and obviously Fanny saw him doing gay stuff with some of the servants so it is out of fear of his safety, not his own malice, which drove him to kill fanny. This does not in any way justify murder but I don't think he's a terrible person - he was acting out of fear.
Never seen Mike slander??
Havers is in 2 episodes 😡😡😡😡
Where is Julian x cap?
Those are couples I hope that they are endgame in Christmas special?pat / fanny because they got lot of common they both have bad marriages?and mary robin it make sense and kitty/ thomas it was hint that kitty had crush on Thomas and mike/ alison do make a great couple I'd like to see their biological children and grandchildren later on future Christmas special ending?
I'm I the only one who ships Julian and Thomas so hard? My ship name for them is Thorncett. I need a life😂😂😂
【promosm】
The Captain and Pat are my otp. Havers just seemed too heterosexual with the uncomfortable smiles at Cap, he knew what was up and was not a fan. If they had been more romantic, though, Pat and Cap would be sitting
I personally don't really ship Havers and captain I see it in a more one sided love and I think havers does care about cap put not in a romantic way he seemed pick up on caps feelings and not really comfortable with it or just doesn't like cap in that way
But it could also just be that there was not that much screen time with both of them and there relationship dynamic also he could of seemed awkward or uncomfortable because he is leaving or I heard a theory that he was a German spy and that's why he left and he does actually romantically care for the Captain but I still don't ship them
no cap x julian 😔
