4 years later and I’m realizing how important the guy on the congas is
Nate Werth! The unsung hero of Snarky Puppy! I wouldn't say he's underrated because most Snarky Puppy fans know his werth (heh-heh) to the band and how vital he is, but he just does his thing in the background most of the time going unnoticed. However, if he wasn't there, you *would* notice!
Nate werth is a goat

COPS:. . "Quite the opposite. . We believe he brought it to life!"
Y'know, I thought it was impressive when he broke a stick and played with one hand to grab a new one.
He's done that with the KICK PEDAL and replaced it mid-song. Talk about murdering a drum kit.
The creativity of Larnell's part is mind-blowing. He's somehow keeping the groove as tight as ever while also filling non-stop and never doing anything remotely the same twice all over the kit. His mind operates on a different level. I would have been out of phrases in 30 seconds, but he's speaking a whole dissertation on the fly in his own language. And its fucking beautiful.
Can't agree more!!!!!!!!!!
I've listened to this for years and while some parts I get, some are still a mystery to me.
Well said
plus he flew in from NY and went directly to the studio without rehearsal and played THIS. There is a documentation about the recording of this album somewhere on youtube and that stuck with me and made this even more insane
Yes!!!
What's the fucking requirement to be in this band? "Are you the best in the world?"
Thats probably not good enough to get in.
Lol probably
I think it's "make the best solo I've ever heard"
yep, that makes sense, nice question
Proficiency. Improvisation. Pushing yourself to the limit.
I'm pretty sure Larnell is breaking some laws of physics here.

Bob Reynolds (sax player) confirmed in the comments section that Larnell Lewis had ONE DAY to learn all of these tunes before recording. Un. Freaking. Real.
...how is that even possible?? what a madman! haha
Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl and Vinnie Colauita use to do the exact same from the 60s until today but mostly just sight reading every part in the studio and live on stage.

That's the beauty of this performance. You can watch it a million times and still discover something that will blow your mind even further.

Nate who...?
Dude, he's such an important part. It's one of those often unsung things, even other musicians sleep on the percussion but this band is a great example of how integral good percussion is. Mad respect to Nate dude is just as much a monster as any of them
Michael League seems so unassuming, but his work ethic must be off the charts. He writes, arranges and produces most of their songs, and has to schedule tours and sessions depending on who's available and has to decide which of his guys should be featured as soloists, because they are ALL killers! He hardly ever features himself, although he is quietly one of the best bassists in the game...

This is absolutely FILTHY! Oh my gosh!!!!!!!! Why am I just finding this guy, Larnell Lewis?!?!?!?!
He's so wrong it's absolutely right! Guy speaks polyrhythm like it's his native tongue.
Polyrhythms, metric modulation, odd groupings, you name it.... He's a beast!
Same here brother. I'm a 16 year old drummer, and this guy right here, Larnell Lewis, what a player he is... I'm thinking of playing 'Lingus' for a show in December, that part where he keeps playing the bass part and is soloing over it is so amazing, yet so hard to do! (Excuse me for my English, it's certainly not perfect in any way)
casper van helvoirt If the only part of that song that gets you is the keyboard solo section, you're waaaaaay ahead of the game.
Nathan Redmon Hahaha ;) Music is what I want to do, and proffesionals have said I could easily succeed if I want to, with the right help and the right amount of effort put into it. Music is the beauty of this world expressed.
5:12 Larnell keeping time on his hi hat throughout his solo is sooooo underrated
The foot independence he has is crazy
That’s what then jazz guys do! It’s dope as hell
He protecc... He attacc
But most importantly
He keeps tracc....
I wish I had that independence.

Speaking of machines, you even have a perfectly played "blast beat" between bass drum and floor tom in 5:51, in first 16th note triplets and then mother-fucking-32th notes at tempo 132 (16th note blast beat at 264bpm).
Like Mangini said once, a "blast beat" can be most musical in the proper musical setting - in jazz fusion, for example :D
I've notated this whole, have to say it was worth it again...
I guess I should, I bet people want to learn this. I posted it to Ultimate Guitar as a Guitar Pro 6 file (takes about 24 hrs for it to be accepted there it seems, never posted anything anywhere before). I marked ghost notes where they fit (and where they can be heard in the song naturally) and marked all accents and distinguished between rimshots and regular "shots" :p. I play this with my second snare on the left to the hihat even though Larnell has his on the right between his 2 floor toms. But the cowbell has to be on the right (attached to a tom for example) to be able to play the solo. But I tell you it's worth it. I used two bass drum pedals during the end of the solo because I can't do a blast beat with a single pedal at 264 bpm :D so I recommend that if you have 2 pedals, I also marked the changes in the Guitar Pro with "jalan vaihto" which is "foot change" from hihat pedal to bass drum pedal or vice versa. It took me 3 weeks to transcribe, learn, practice and memorize this and it still has much practice value (meaning that I suck :D).
You are a brave man.
I tried to post it in Ultimate Guitar but they don't want it because it only has the drum track :DD
Larnell Lewis is an heroic man.
+Ash Hudson Dude. He's coming back for Family Dinner Vol. 2... WITH Sput.

Annoying as hell until the rest of the band came in. And I thought the synth guy was the biggest ass in the band.
At least synth guy makes decent music out of his weird solos. It's pretty surprising that the saxes, trumpets, and drummer are team players but this one jerk isn't. Worst Snarky Puppy solo I've ever had the displeasure of listening to. And he won over the Sleeper talk box solo.

I want to lose my shit as a percussionist every time I watch Larnell play, but writing a composition where someone can go off like that and it fits within the song naturally is something else AFTER a gnarly guitar solo is something else man. The writing and execution is so next level.

***** I see it as jazz fusion (because of the funk and latin influences), and the arrangements make it prog.
It's more like fusion because it has impovisation, prog in the other hand doesn't have any of it.

Prog always had a ton of improvisation in it. I dunno what planet you are from.
theboywholikesgaming There is no improv in studio music

Larnell's grooves are just disgustingly great. I'm always impressed by his sense of time as well as his ability to play very technical rhythms and changes with such groove. @@TheSeeking2know yeah but then then in the end u get corey henry keeping tempo for the drums.
oh my god, just like how I feel, when the solo starts it feels confusing like lost in someplace dark (a forest or somewhere) but then it finally found "the way" and just went mental...
04:45 easily one of the best riffs in years, and the part following got me thinking of Dream Theater when they were still a great band:p Awsome music:)
Yeah I totally agree. It's jazz fusion I'm sure but it sounds really progressive to me. I certain elements reminded me of DT (back when they were totally awesome a long time ago haha) I miss old DT so bad!
+raimesey I think Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock are natural bedfellows. They share the same concepts and if you look at the history of fusion, you had Mahavishnu Orchestra and Billy Cobham, Tommy Bolin etc blending jazz with furious rock.
fuzzylogiceire I don't really listen to much fusion and only a few prog bands so it wasn't until now that it clicked. What i've heard so far i really enjoy though

If you listen to Porcupine Tree at all, Steven Wilsons solo album "The Raven That Refused To Sing" has songs that are a really good mix of old school prog and jazz fusion but with a modern edge. It's very accessible like most stuff Wilson does.
fuzzylogiceire Nice one man, i'll be sure to check them out

I'm getting a really strong Mars Volta vibe from that section to the end.
Muhngkee It's by far the most infectiously addictive part of a completely brilliant all-around composition
Look up Ghost Note
