- Larnell Lewis has a magic in his drumming that nobody else can replicate, and he shares his talents in this playthrough of "What About Me" from Snarky Puppy's 2014 release, We Like It Here (GUMUK Ltd - Composer: Michael League)

"It's a song that pushed my limits when I first encountered it," he said. That's not all: he had to learn an entire album's worth of Snarky Puppy tunes while on a plane (they called him with 24 hours' notice to record We Like It Here).

@@DrumeoOfficial Was that the actual kit or were some samples used as well? I've been looking at that kit (oak hybrid) vs. the Absolute Maple Hybrid, which Larnell usually plays, so just curious.

Sput is a monster drummer, he's absolutely incredible, but Larnell is just on another level. To me he's as legendary as Dave Weckl.
Sput has a more groovy style of playing this song (live performance, uploaded by meinl). But I agree, Larnell is just amazing all round.
It is not about a competition of "who's better" btw
@@RubenSprng I agree with this. Sput, Larnell, *and* JT are all on equal footing, to be honest. They have different styles, and bring their own flavor to the gigs, but I don't care who you are. You don't get a Snarky Puppy gig unless you're one of the best drummers on the planet (that goes for all the other band positions as well). Mike League knows whats up.
It's OK to say that Larnell is your favorite drummer (he's my favorite Snarky drummer) but to say that he is *better* than Sput or the others is just naive, let alone saying that one is "on another level".

Keep in mind, though, it's not really fair to compare this to the "We Like It Here" session or this Drumeo that Larnell sat in on, because this audio is coming from a microphone back stage and not the mixing console that we get to hear with Larnell. Having said that, however, you can clearly see that Sput is a master of groove and knows when to punch it when necessary. I think if we had a console mix of Sput's video, it would be amazing. For that matter, check out pretty much any other Snarky Puppy album video that has Sput playing. He's an incredible drummer!
I think you mean it regarding his general creativeness... When it comes to legacy, Weckl is galaxies away man.. Too many more hours recorded...
@@gustafsone I just listened and honestly although its a little muddy most of the mud is coming from the instruments in the Bass range (Bass guitar, Bass/Alto saxophone etc.) you can still hear each element of the kit clearly and can hear how dynamically it is being played. very much enjoyed, thanks for the link friend.

My fave drummer in the world right now. Last time I was this inspired was seeing Paco Sery with the Zawinul syndicate in 1997.

@@KevinfinityDrums The MIDI track sounds very stiff, there's not a lot of feel for him to play against. I love his playing, but I think the backing track would be better if he could actually use the tracks from the record. Obviously, he's not using it for some reason out of his control.

This is like the fifth Larnell Lewis video I’ve watched in a row, and all I can say is... someone get that guy a left ear plug that fits! Or is he just adjusting it to show how effortlessly he plays?
Left ear might be a bit bigger than right, so standard size won't work, probably needs a size bigger on that side?
Glasses arms + sweat makes it difficult to get a secure fit.
What an inspiration is to hear this amazing musician.
