After Larnell and that sax player's back and forth, I have no idea how that whole studio wasn't roiling in flames. That whole set was fire.
Masterpiece
🔥🔥
Great sound. Great teamwork when the sax player lost his headphones, covered by a drum fill and the trumpet player helps throw the headphones back on. The flawed beauty of LIVE.
i totally agree!!! This is how legends are madeh
Did you notice the violin player how she looked in awe when Larnell played the fills from 4:47?
why is the keyboard section always the most hilarious for the camera to cut to
Fr tho
Jazz really is the peak of musical complexity. So amazing to watch these guys jam out. They're feeding off each other.
I get what you're saying, but I don't think that complexity is the correct term. It's a language you develop and communicate. While it can be complex, that's not the goal.
seeing snarky puppy live last year was a spiritual experience. Mind blowing. Jaw dropping. Can't believe it to this day. I'm their #1 glazer
Flams between foot and hand are only the beginning with Lewis. Most impressive drummer I think I've ever heard. Not lacking any chops, seemingly never loses track of where the beat falls, all the speed you want in both feet and hands, and an incredible listener with the vocabulary to respond to the soloist. Oh, and clean as a whistle, even when it gets really busy.
sttommore Truth
I was wondering if anyone else caught the mimicry (for lack of a better word) at 3:43!
@@TabRoss1st shut the fuck up boomer
Tab Ross Check out Brian Blade. He’s gifted
TheSpecialOne violence?????? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The way Larnell plays off of Bobs energy during that solo is just insane. Like theyre connected telepathically
The entire thing demands something akin to telepathy; its an ant-colony; at various points it stops being individuals playing and a super-organism emerges responding at the speed of neuronal travel
Larnell's playing is so fucking melodic man. He just predicts whatever solo he's backing.
I’ve never heard drums played the way he does it
He's a f'ing superhero in my eyes
as a drummer my self, the queues he catches on are insane. some of them you can predict, but HOLY SHIT that mans a god.
Absolutely, he's a funkier version of Gavin Harrison in that way to me. Technically gifted but a great overall musician, not just a drummer, and playing for the song.
Came in cold and drove the fuck out of these sessions.
Cory's dance at 4:23 gives me life
lol boy is just bouncin
+BBT609 He's mimicking larnell hitting the ride on the drumset haha.
At 3:42 Reynolds responds to Lewis’ call. Lewis repeats the response to let Reynolds know that he is listening too. Lewis consistently places beats when Reynolds takes his breaths. Later at 4:15 Lewis hears Reynolds’ accents on the upbeat and changes grooves. At 4:34 they’re locked into the same pattern creating an incredible build up. At 4:55 Reynolds loses his headphones right at the peak of the section. Lewis notices this and continues to fill the space with a massive fill. And to think that Lewis had limited time to learn these songs on top of it being live is mind blowing. I’ve heard of Bob Reynolds before from John Mayers live in LA album from 2007, but, I’ve never heard of SP before. How have I never heard of these guys before now?
Thank you. I have no musical background but this really helped me appreciate the level of absolute insanity that is this performance.
Cory appreciates Larnell's upbeat groove, too. (4:23)
about 4:55 I really dont think he used the fill as a cover, just because that fill was going already when those fall..he may or may not have made it longer if he actually saw that IMMEDIATELY but its not major stuff id say.
Besides that, I agree 100% on the rest of the comment and its actually so wholesome just reading how much appreciation Larnell gets. Such a beast. The way the violin girls are hooked on him, as well ... :P
You are spot on!
Well considering that Larnell never heard the full sacs solo on the demo is another testament to Larnell's talent, ear and overall bad aszness.
Bob Reynolds and Larnell Lewis in a full-on duet. Sublime. Up there with the famous Cory solo for me.
Yeah, sure.. I think Bob Reynolds had listen alot to Joshua Redman at this time...
@@dex6575 I know they did workshops together, and may have even done a couple small LA shows.
Larnell Lewis might just be the best and most tasteful drummer around. Such immaculate feel.
Yes...and effortless!
My favorite drummer, ever!
easily the most equiped drummer with the deepest vocabulary.
5:16 his smile knowing he absolutly murdered that solo
His smile there is genuinely so wholesome to watch.
Larnell Lewis is a beast
Yeaah, i'm agree !!
Musicality more than skill. And he don't lack skill.
At first, I was skeptical about him playing instead of Sput. But, Larnell is phenomenal studio drummer. Perfect for this
gibbsies Larnell learned the songs (Lingus, Shofukan, What About Me?) Sitting in on Canadian Snarky Puppy gigs. The others he learned on the plane ride to the studio. He is phenomenal.
gibbsies Also Sput had passport problems.
I come back here every now and then to remind myself how good jazz can be.
Larnell and Michael.... being that tight shouldn't be possible.
These guys are in a different LEAGUE
It is scary. Especially when Larnell starts playing polyrhythms all over the place while still remaining tight af with Mike on his kick drum.
@@markjalbert3801 ...word...
Most drummers are worried drum machines will take their gigs, but drum machines are worried Larnell will take theirs.
THATS A GOOD COMMENT RIGHT THERE
Drum machines been real quiet since this performance dropped
Corey Henry and Shaun Martin's response at 4:44 is priceless!!!
I genuinely cheered at my screen when Mike put Bob's headphones back on 🤣
PEOPLE !! We need to start a petition to get that LARNELL LEWIS DRUM CAM IN FULL :)
Dude on the keys man...So tasteful. He really knew how to set the tone.
Also think it's worth mentioning Nate (percussion), who compliments and links up with Larnell perfectly.
100% agreed !
Like they are joined at the hip!
Larnell's kick game is sharper than a f*cking sushi knife. Love it.
0:06 Bob's losing himself in the music. The moment the solo is born.
0:21 Nate knowing what's coming. He'll have to be at the top of his game (spoiler: he is.)
0:43 Larnell metronoming, preparing for the storm.
1:35 Bill likes it here.
1:38 The first of Mara's looks at Larnell. There are many.
3:17 Woo.
4:16 Hi-hat on the off-beat, Michael and Cory both dancing.
4:41 Mara looks again. Shaun "WOOHOO!"
4:48 Larnell is getting it tonight, if he wants it
Just when i thought i can't enjoy and love this more i read your comment, thanks! Jay didn't smile, but what's important is that Mara did hahaha
I just met bob today it was so friggin cool
You’re hilarious 😂
LOVE THIS BREAKDOWN!
This is amazing 😭😭
Came here for Larnell Lewis and now im in love with the whole band
That phrase at 3:13, everytime I hear it, makes me want to slap my computer. Bob Reynolds is crazy. And Larnell Lewis needs to go to an asylum - the interplay with Bob during his solo was just phenomenal. Kudos to Justin Stanton for writing such an amazing tune, the composition really does fit the title - it's a very weird but cool song!
And that smile on Bob Reynolds face after that saxophone solo is a man dedicated to his craft. Absolutely outstanding
This drummer. I just cannot wrap my head around his genius.
By far, one of the best sax solos I have ever heard. Bob Reynolds is a genius. The timing and the phrasing of the notes, my goodness!!!
I'm a straight man and I would be doing the same face the girl was doing at Larnell if I were there. What a fucking hero.
This band is redefining what we use to call jazz, into a whole new category. I Love this band!!!
because you need sexual attraction to look at people and enjoy things? weirdo
😂 Larnell had em wet in there 😂
@@FlourescentPotato calm down internet gangsta..
Bob Reynolds look of pure joy after completely killing the solo 5:15
Agreed! I felt so damn happy for him, you can tell he knew he nailed it and he could tell everyone enjoyed it, truly a special moment.
I believe it's his reaction to Cory's and Shaun's clapping.
i love bob man
If you're wondering why Michael League is so joyous, just imagine your own amazing art being played out in front of you.
4:42 -- ohhh!.. wellll hello there!
4:49 -- you naaaughty boy...
4:54 -- yeah, i'm still lookin...
5:00 -- yeeeeahhh.... you naaaughty boy.
ha! I though I was the only one who noticed that lady's dirty looks at the drummer
Lmho.
@@dcdigofire2 Im a straight dude but if larnell was playing like that in front of me id be giving him the exact same looks
Totally noticed that haha - and he stayed locked with *that* look burning into him! Respect...
Who's that girl? 😂
Oh my god...I just got done spending three weeks on Lingus, then I go to this? How can the atoms of my mind be reblown away? Larnell, you certainly didn't shy away from this challenge...you embraced and knocked several over the wall. Wow...
Hope you found your way to “ what about me”
Everything was calm until Bob fed that drum rhythm back to Larnell at 3:42. Then everything went ape shit. That ladies and gents is what music is all about. Listening and playing off each other. That is music
.. word...
This is actually the most pure and real saxophone solo I've ever listened to and it's so so good like oh my lord it's just like amazing. Share the love
4:58 when you loose your headphones but saxophone is life

+KrummyBear Most incredibly.
This is what happens when "band nerds" are exposed to radiation. Fracking amazing!!
+Leo Schroeder
They say when Chernobyl's explosion happened, Snarky Puppy was created.
lmao
Haha, one of the best comments I've read on YT
People die of radiation, but I get where you're coming from.
🤣❤️🤣🎧
Are you people sure the drummer is from this planet? This kind of talent is overwhelming to comprehend.
I think the factor that makes all these "We like it here" solos so damn good is L. Lewis, his drumming just bring the improvisations to another level
Bob's solo builds up so well because of his use of silence to punctuate each line. Just listen to the pauses he makes, they're so perfectly implemented! Gotta transcribe some of this...
Fucking mighty drummer. Such an Alpha hero.
Bob's solos are so amazing every time!
Larnell Lewis plays this song like a man who didnt learn it on the plane ride to the gig....
I had to undergo a surgery with local anaesthesia, and I've chosen to play this song on repeat. I've focused on every note, every beat and every single thing made me happy to be alive, and made my realize that the very existence of music is the most awesome and beautiful thing in Mankind history (I was a bit high because of some gas they made me breath to calm the pain). Snarky Puppy or how to transform a surgery in a good memory ♥
Great vision on music and life, love music as much too,,, grtz Luc(hope you are well now)
Nobody gives a shit
insane
have you heard of love, you angry human?
Get well soon, live the life, enjoy the music and just ignore those dirty comment
That stare to Larnell from the violin player at 4.54, damn :D
She was already on him at 1:40 LOL!
Snarky puppy honestly is the best thing that has happened to me in 2020
They touched me in the most appropriate way in 2023. Keep the feels!
5:02 (pause it) The looks we all wish for, but very few of us ever get. 🥵Larnell Lewis. the man, the beast, the legend...Incredible.👏👏
Sax man knows how to use space. Builds himself right up.
Love Cory and Shaun's reaction to the sax solo. Brother was rockin' so hard his headphones fell off! Don't be so mean, sax man, don't be so mean! Gritty!
The violinist shakes her head at 4:49 cause she can't believe what Larnell Lewis is laying down!! Absolutely amazing musicianship. Love this band!!
Something about this record hits so different compared to other snarky puppy stuff. Props to the boys for shooting it outta the park
Yeah.
They sure did.
Agreed. I really like some of their other stuff, but this album in particular is ... something indeed. Can’t put my finger on it. It’s probably Larnell though.
@@colin8150 All the other drummers are great. Larnell just really drove this album with his powerful and intricate playing. The drum was a dominant background instrument and he used a lot of different styles which made it more memorable.
These videos also gave more substance and weight (in memory) to the music.
@@TheSeeking2know Agreed, especially on the point of the videos. High production value, great drumming, multiple amazing solos.
When the violinist eyeing down the drummer and I think I even saw a wink. That was epic drummer skills my man!
They way how that woman at 4:49 looks at the drummer is that exact look all musicians want when we play...man
I thought the same thing! Ha-ha!
I'm so glad you mentioned this. They all have absolute respect for each other which has got to be the secret ingredient to why these guys are so damn good! The expressions on her face in this track say it all!
@@stephenbell1363 Yes, we care so much when men asks for us to PLAY SERIOUS MUSIC and nothing more. Even more if they are THAT talented.
With Nicholas Cage playing piano to our right.
"that guy is so nasty"
The downfall of a drummer- especially a jazz drummer- is when one doesn't listen to the soloist. Good jazz drummers- the ones I want to play with- are those that do 3:39- when the soloist does a roll lick and the drummer responds with a roll on the snare. And in 3:44 when the his 4 note lick (2 sixteenth, eighth, downbeat) is mimicked on the snares a beat later. That is sick. Improv and response. Don't play jazz without listening like that. Its being "in tune" a different way.
Exactly. 100% agree, and I noticed that 3:44 response too, just too damn sweet!
Chris Dave does this
Andrew S McFarlane
Vinnie Colaiuta
@@teddys3558 Wow, somebody needs to chill and read the 5 year old comment in question again before spazzing out on the internet. @Andrew S McFarlane was giving the drummer a compliment my guy. Relax.
Justin's decision to land on that FMajor at the end. Freakin Fantastic. He's such a great keys and trumpet player, and an excellent writer. The way he writes is specifically tailored to fascinate instrumentalists and still sound entertaining to a general listener. I mean, the choice of chords, the tightness of the kick and bass, and where everything is placed within the groove form such a solid foundation for Bob Reynolds' solo, even just that part of this song alone, grips me everytime, and makes me sooo happy to be a musician
Larnell Lewis is absolutely transcendental. Play from 4:15 at .5 speed and watch until 5:02 as the whole front row falls in love with him.
Gotta love how much space the sax player leaves in his solo. So tasteful.
That's the reason why jazz teachers make us guitar players study sax solos. Those guys have to breathe and so do our solos
@@TMmodifyyeah
You forget that breathing while playing a non wind instrument is very important too
@@NotFine a good thing to do to implement this is to sing the solos while you're playing them. Not to mention it really solidifies the link between the music in your head and the way you play
Larnell Lewis & Bob Reynolds achieve greatness ! Pure magic !
His headset couldn't handle that amazing solo no more😭🔥
I don't know why, but Shaun clapping at 5:12 after bob Reynolds' solo is just so funny and child-like to me. It oddly reminds me of an N.P.C, the way he does it in the same motion for a couple seconds.
The relationship of this band is so awesome and I love it.
I can never listen the that tune once. Always come back to it, and alway go through it a dozen times, one after the other. More chemistry going on in that room than a dam DuPont plant!
Seriously?
I think this is my new favorite!
Like buddy plays his headgear off, the whole band is grooving, and Lewis is such a powerhouse on the drums!
I love every single contributor to this piece...eargasm to the highest degree! Well done!
Although there is absolutely no denying how fucking awesome Sput is. Larnell is just so powerful! amazing !!
+Cameron Favell larnell is RELENTLESS. such a different dynamic but it works very well.
Ok, everyone already commented on it, but god DAMN that sax solo!!1!!! Talk about tasty licks.....jeez. Not to mention the drum/sax interplay, or even the drummer, period.
Too much talent in this band to process, head's about to explode
I remember watching these sessions when they came out and being amazed by them. My affinity for these sessions has only grown over the years. The magic of all of these tracks just seems more astounding as the years go on. THIS collective struck lightning in a bottle on this session. I'm not sure we'll ever see this level of chemistry again. What an amazing accomplishment this recording session was.
That sax solo is absolutely amazing.
4:48 violonist looking at Larnell with a stank face... what a pleasure to see
Okay so you have listened to this a thousand times. Can we just celebrate for a moment just how amazingly tuned Larnell's toms are just after 3:46 (courtesy of Nate pre-flight-arrival). They just sing at that moment in the perfect key.
Snarky Puppy is the air I breathe
And they had no idea that the best keyboard solo in the world awaited them that day... The day of Lingus...
+Ticky O'Meally I believe it was a 3-day recording session, where each day they played the same songs (some faster than usual), but they chose only one from each session.
+ghyprh This was the same day they recorded Lingus, though (you can tell by Larnell's shirt).

This thread made my night. I'm sipping red wine in northern Spain listening to this song for the Nth time this year. Thanks for the laught, witty fellows. Snarky on.
Even the ancient Mayas solely relied on Larnell's shirt to tell the day. Those bitches didn't give Jack Shit about other folks' shirts man.
I can’t believe this was 8 years ago 🤯. Timeless.
I wonder if larnell did that giant fill during the guys solo because he saw his headphones fall off. If so that is unreal.
I think he did (covered my ass).
Love that solo dude! Keep up the good work!
Bob Reynolds Man, you were awesome! This was one of the most beautifully presented sax/drum cowork in this decade!
Yep, and your channel is awesome. Cheers
Bob Reynolds Yeah that solo was absolutely killer! the opening lick is so dirty!
its crazy you caught that.. i always wondered why larnell did that fill there, but while bobs adjusting headphones he kept doing the rolls..
shows you how quickly these guys think
This is some of the most amazing music I have ever heard. Snarky Puppy is fucking GOLD!!! Emotional, entertaining, powerful, stimulating, talent beyond measure. Thanks be to the Most High! Blessings from Barbados. I love this music.
Bob Reynolds on sax ladies and gentlemen!
Just remembered to breathe after that saxophone solo
Larnell and the sax player are a miracle!
You have to watch this a couple times to comprehend that sax solo
definitely...
MrSpartanfanatic1 And more you comprehend it, more you like it
+MrSpartanfanatic1 -- Spot on comment Mr Sparty. And I have come back at least 50 times to hear & enjoy more each time.
Everytime I watched before it was drum. But damn I was missing that sax solo. It's all I listen to now. Wow
It was more like a duet
I am not a musician. At age 40 I took up bass guitar lessons (you’re never too old, are you?) and can feebly flap my fingers around a bass, but I have no real clue nor real care about unusual time signatures, major and minor doodads and what gadget made what unusual sound at 27.45 or whatever. What I do know, however, is what I like about music. As far as I’m concerned, music MUST do two things: make you feel some kind of emotion (apart from revulsion, the effect modern pop "music" has on me) AND feel the passion of the composer/lyricist and performer.
My bass teacher put me on to these guys, and now I can’t stop listening to them. They meet both my criteria as I feel immensely happy listening to them, plus a palpable sense of wonder about how good they are at their art. Plus, the well made video proves the passion they all share, from the sexy cellist to the drummer who seems to do the impossible. And yes, Michael League has the best bass face ever.
Thanks Snarky Puppy - you’ve opened up a whole new world of music to me. To paraphrase a fairly well-known cartoon character, don’t shut up - and take my money!
5 years later, how you doing?
Discovered Snarky Puppy recently and I am so obsessed with their music. Keep finding myself returning back to this video multiple times a day and many other of their songs.
I just want a show about Cory Henry and Shaun Martin, they seem like buds.
I wish all studio albums were made like this.
So entertaining!
Larnell is just in another level of Finesse........it´s just SO smooth and effortless.......
Reminder that Larnell learned most of the songs in this session on the 7 hour plane ride to europe. Crazy drummer
If you REALLY put your mind to ANYTHING, you can create magic. The fact that Larnell only had like a day or 2 (according to the "We Like It Here" Documentary) to practice this (not to mention THE ENTIRE ALBUM REPERTOIRE!) gives me huuuuge faith in human capability paired with a focused mind.
This is what happens when a bunch of phenomenal musicians (who serve the song over their individual ego) get together.
The beginning of the sax solo 3:14 is one of the nastiest I’ve ever heard. 3:43 brought it a whole new level.
i wanna grab the sax guy, give him a hug and tell him to keep playing forever.
GOD THAT 02:02 PART!!! I HEAR HANDEL, I HEAR BACH, I HEAR COPLAND, I HEAR JAZZ, I HEAR FUNK I HEAR GOD!!!!!

The wind players are fantastic. All the players are fantastic, but the way the winds have to wait, then come in off-beat, together in unison, and for memory, is VERY impressive. Super impressive band, amazing music.
Bob’s solo is a textbook example of how to build and pace a solo. Awesome.

This 5 bar loop in 6/8 time got me hypnotized.
It's mad that you can reach a level of musicianship where playing music this difficult becomes almost second nature.
