Love the song, love the playing, love the players but with all due respect, I have to be honest, on the last few songs they've put out I'm not really liking the drum sounds. Kinda wimpy in my opinion. If you're going to use real drums and then process them to sound like a beat box, then just use a beat box. I get that they're trying to be different with the drum sound and they're trying to break new ground but personally, I'm just not feeling it. Sorry I know I'll be in the minority but that's how I feel.
Vai shows that after all these years he is still willing to push himself. Not easy to go into a room as "Steve Vai" with arguably the hottest guitar players on the planet and challenge yourself to do something new. He could easily just make a living playing For The Love of God to nostalgic oldschoolers but rather is willing to step out of his comfort zone. That is ego death. Same props too Polyphia for honouring Vai in such an authentic way, realising that they stand on the shoulders of giants.

@@fuzzwad5049 well what do you know their first track of the remember you will die album is Genesis and it is featuring Brasstracks, but Ego Death is listed as the last song, so maybe for a smooth transition to repeat the whole album?
First, yes these are talented musicians, but the unsung hero here is the one who recorded, mixed, and mastered this. Polyphia's rich mix of textures is defined and enabled every bit as much by compression and software as it is the musicians and instruments themselves.
Dude I am overwhelmed with emotion, being a guitar player myself and growing up in the 80s this is absolutely amazing. Huge Vai fan, also a huge Al Di Meola fan and these guys remind me of Al and Paco and that fusion style.
That crossover of Polyphia and Steve Vai, young and old, and how they work so well together is so wholesome and awesome. Anyone who's into guitar music should at least appreciate this song.
Every time I think about Steve Vai and his music, I realize how he always has been a man far ahead of his time, and this song sounds like a rendezvous where there is the man who lived in the future and the future itself, of course, musically speaking. This amazing in many levels, what a song.
As a fan of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai since teenage years, seeing Steve Vai on the Throne (where he belongs to) warms my heart and I liked this young band even more. Moreover, Henson said at younger ages that the music he wanna produce doesn’t exist yet, now I see it clearly. Clean phenomenal work young man.
I bet Steve Vai feels honored just by the fact that these young guitarists can play and write songs of this caliber, because it's innately knowen that any musician/guitarist worth his mettle has Steve Vai as one of his highest inspirations (with playing guitar) so he was prolly just like "Oh yeah, my legacy has created a fucking monster", and apparently they worship me. Thats pretty sweet i guess 🤏🧐🤌
That's the thing about that style of guitarists. You can find thousands of people who play technical stuff like Polyphia, but nobody but Steve Vai could play what he played and make it sound like it did. Reminds me of guys like Derek Trucks. Derek Trucks is one of a kind, nobody on Earth sounds like him. I think Steve Vai is the same way. He added another facet of character and musicianship that you just never hear on a Polyphia record, which is full of so many vast techniques already.
@@julianezequielpdg7347 I love this take. This was necessary to point out. Dont want to be a spoilsport but lets be honest this aint metal :) I am a Polyphia fan & nerd BTW.

lol you obviously dont play guitar. fast rifts are not the only, arguably not even the hardest, things to play. the way he bends multiple string at different times simultaneously controlling both pitchs is INSANELY hard to do at all, let alone this precisely. he was proving it, so your commenbt of "so good doesnt feel to need to prove it" is slightly off. more like he doesnt feel the need for everyone to know. just the ones also know what its like to play.
@@santioliva It was a quote from a John Wayne movie (Rio Bravo), where Wayne complements a young gunslinger who…is so good that he does the truly hard stuff but doesn’t have the thirst for showing off that young men usually have. He doesn’t bother with the easy ways of showing off…he’s too good for that.

The way the guys paid homage to Steve and created this amazing bedrock foundation for him to come in so smoothly just shows how far they have come as composers as well. I am totally on board for more Scottie. Tim has always been quick to acknowledge that they both make huge contributions to the songwriting in different ways (even if the songs usually start with Tim crafting a hook). Letting Tim shine like the virtuoso he is while also giving Scottie space to shine just as bright really elevates it. (Not leaving out the Clays either... Clay G is immaculate at playing exactly what is required with nothing more or nothing less, and Clay A is an absolute monster at converting drum machine lines to a physical kit and maximizing the value of space)
@@srsbsns7673 Honestly with the way Clay A plays and the amount of collaborations Polyphia has done with other guitarists, I'd love to see a track featuring Jojo Mayer. Guy plays breakcore chops on an acoustic kit.
This didn't feel like a tense virtuoso contest. It just looked like everyone having fun doing what they love. I'm hoping this inspires musicians and listeners alike. I really enjoyed!
Absolutely agree! At the end of the day, both Vai and Henson are songwriters at heart , and their collaboration should ultimately be just a great song, with great hooks and dynamics. That's what this song is.
Scott and Tim can’t compete with Steve’s understanding of the guitar - and Steve cant compare with their technique. Enough respect here from everyone to know that there are different types of virtuosity
it's amusing how often people think that virtuoso means "tech showoff" lol... steve vai and tim henson both are just masters of expression is all. steve especially in this song, its more about what he's not doing, that really shows how he speaks through a guitar like most players cannot. amazing soundscapes being built here.
Interesting story: I asked chat GPT to tell me something I'd like to know, based on my conversation history. It mentioned that I might like Polyphia, based on my interest in technically complex music like Dream Theater. It was right. I was checking out your playlist and I was hooked right away with the nylon string guitars. I hadn't mentioned it to Chat GPT, but another of my favorite musicians is rumba flamenco guitarist Jesse Cook. I checked out this playlist and I hadn't even looked at the title, when I saw a musician I am very familiar with: Steve Vai. I've seen him live twice and for a while, I had a great photo I took of him playing his guitar with fret lights as my Facebook background photo. Love your stuff! Great work!
What was really astounding was how they blended their styles. Steve has a way different approach to guitar than polyphia does and it was so cool to see them celebrate his style and still keep the polyphia rhythms.
The boys did exactly what they do best, and Vai did exactly what he does best. Pure unadulterated, unstoppable creative flow you guys. In a grim world, witnessing these artists express themselves gives me hope that I can maintain happiness and satisfaction on this planet.
My Father introduced me into the world of music a couple decades ago starting with Steve Vai, along with other great bands and guitarists. He's been to Vai's concerts mutiple times. Then he took me to one of the Guinness World Record of simultaneous guitar playing in Wrocław, in Poland years back, when Tommy Emmanuel was touring. I cannot thank him enough for all those memories and more. Was he still with us today, he would have shed a tear while enjoying every single note and sound played in this track, just as I am in tears today still, since it got released. This piece truly is a gap-link between generations of music. I stand in awe. I honestly cannot wait what's next... Polyphia and Steve Vai outdid themselves on every possible level with this one, all presenting their unique styles of play. I only wish I was able to share that amazing experience with my Father... Thank you kindly for this how remarkable masterpiece of music. Best regards, Chris
The beauty of music my friend. I'm glad you had that connection with your father and I'm sure he's rocking out while watching over you. I had a similar feeling about my first guitar teacher who introduced me to Vai & Satriani 💙
Really love that Vai's part wasn't just a solo that he filmed somewhere else and it was just put into the video. He actually filmed with the band and was there from that start of his solo until the end of the video.
Exactly and it's incredible how Vai completely grasp the soul of the song and resonate with young mates. He's not pretending at all, he felt what boys felt and accorded himself onto a point in which he even nailed an almost perfect Vai style solo with Vai licks and vibes that we get used to for decades, on this neo soulish track. I even kinda felt that boys also felt what i'm talking and felt sincere respect and appreciation.
Honestly wish Steve did a bit more melodic shredding like he did back in the day and relied on the trem a bit less, but what are ya gonna do. Song still slaps.
I'm always happy when Vai collaborates with the newest generation of musicians. From his collaborations with Jacob Collier to Jonah Nilsson to now with Polyphia, I always appreciate the way in which Vai departs from his comfort zone in collaborations like this and makes the songs even more amazing
As a 54 year old guitarist, I never even imagined that guitar could reach this level of technical insanity. The songwriting is brilliant as well. I love it!
@@harrydehnhardt5092 I get where you're coming from. Polyphia's chord progressions are usually very simple, and I myself wish at times that they would go a bit more wild in that regard (although every now and then there are indeed some spicy chords mixed in, although they usually come and go very quickly). However, how the chords are played of course can also make the music very interesting and fun to listen to. Every now and then I come accross a classical guitar piece where at first I sniff my nose and think, meh, boring chord progression, but then later go, okay wait, this is actually super cool, because the chords are played in such a creative way. Nice arpeggios, variation in sound colouring, weird jumps, nice motifs worked into it. And I think on that front Poyphia really excell!
I'm not even a Vai fan, but this is one of the coolest things to see happen. I can't imagine what it would feel like to meet a childhood hero, let alone play back-to-back like that.
every time you see them in a new room or setting, you'll notice they keep progressively going up floors in the building. The higher up they go the more intense and difficult the song gets. Until they finally reach the top, which is where the master himself is waiting to receive them, seated on his throne. The whole video builds to them meeting Steve vai at the top of the guitar game, and being accepted by him as having reached that status. Honestly such an awesome visual analogy of musicians that hold each other in the highest of respects.
The trumpeter at the end reminds me of the judgement tarot card. Where an angel plays a trumpet from heaven to the dead, where they judged to be are raised up to heaven. I am seeing that along with title "ego death" it's about them ascending and becoming guitar gods.
Steve Vai continues to amaze me. The man is a force of nature. He incorporates himself perfectly into the song, matches the style, and makes no discernable effort to throw his weight around. Really cool to see this. Ego Death such a fitting title. Humility all around, even with Vai on his throne, which he abandons by the end the video as just another part of the group.
This is just my opinion, but I think people are more happy to just hear him on such a popular bands track. But he clashes so hard with the sound, for me it's the guitar tone, his playing is as expected great, but he doesn't enhance the song, he over powers it
pretty sure the name ego death is just a reference to a phenomenon that occurs when one takes too many psychedelics and experiences what is known as an "ego death"

It's like Tim steps aside and says hey world don't forget about these other awesome people in the band. And then there's Vai... What an awesome way for the band to pay homage to those that came before and really show their respect. Phenomenal story here and another home run track! Congrats!

Agree on Scott. Especially the lick at 2:29 killed me. Good vibes man, and Steve vai entrance this is too much...As a Vai admirer this almost made me cry.

I'm here for it. I fell in love with Satch during the Surfing with the Alien era
Tbf, that's what every producer says. Or as I would say "I hear the music that's missing."
When Tim said "the next album has some ridiculous features" holy shit he was NOT joking.
The one I look forward to most is with Chino Moreno. No idea what that's gonna sound like but I'm hyped
right!? that sick trumpet part at the end was jaw dropping!
@@driesv.7572 was that a teaser for next song?!
damn crazier than this?
@@njc119 Yes they have a track with Brasstracks feature on it. So hyped for this album to drop!
4:15 Clay's bass is absolutely legendary, why is no one talking about it?
tbh his bass lines this song were perfection.
always such good tone from him / plays his role in the tracks so well.
Steve’s whammy went so hard I think I just forgot anyth8ng else exists
I've listened to and watched the clip and listened to that accent a number of times. He's cool. I love his style.
Because I listen with a crappy phone and can't hear sh*t
That was very cool with Vai, I used to listen to him in the 80's hes still got it! nice arrangement❤
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the tight rhythm section here ! Clay and clay killing it ❤️
Everytime, they mold the Clay ❤
The pottery wheel is always epic!
@@IceMetalPunk 🏺no jar can hold this groove! Deeper pockets Fam 🏺
How is it so solid when it's entirely made of Clay :o
@@TheBritishPoro The clay has been hardened in the kiln of practice and glazed with talent 😁
Let's all take a moment to appreciate Scottie's awesome effing lead tone on here and excellent playing. And tasteful playing from Vai as usual!!
Scott is just that little bit better than Tim
@@bjrndrachmann5828 Stop the 'X is better than Y' shit, please. At such high level of playing there's no better or worse, just different styles.
@@БекжанКасенов-й8т besides, anyone who's been with polyphia long enough and not just a recent fanboy knows that Scottie and tim have been two sides of the same coin in skill since the beginning
