Next level.
@VDistinguishedV The Drummer
noway
@VDistinguishedV the drummer. The black bald guy
Seriously that drummer is fucking amazing.
my question is how do i become one of those guys that just chill and watch these guys while they are recording this
How to become one of the chill patrol, Robert....good karma points you got stored up..:)
Save me a chair when you find out!
Back in the day, if I would have been invited to this, I would have been so high.
It's a cult of aristocrats. Intermarriage is the only way.
@Lokey How do you mean?
I've listened to this at least 50 times and this is the FIRST TIME that I've heard the echo effect that Shaun does with the talk box at the end of each of his phrases in the intro. It's so subtle and my brain exploded with how phenomenal that microscopic extra layer is. 0:26 and 0:45 for reference. watch his mouth and you'll REALLY be able to hear it and then you won't be able to unhear it!
Holy shit, I would never have noticed that till you pointed it out
That was the most interesting part of the tune.
That's some tasty delay and reverb for sure
Yes! It's so beautiful. I never really noticed it when just listening to the audio.
Yeah, it's delay
I just watched "Lingus" a bunch of times, and now I learn that the guy just losing it next to Cory Henry's soloing on that one is five-time Grammy winner Shaun Martin who is capable of doing THIS to a talk box. What the hell?
You need to listen to his tune "MADIBA"
@@zatoichiMiyamoto Yup, that's a good one. Thanks!
@Lap Joint: Likewise - saw his reactions on 'Lingus' and many times, I just look out for him - I knew only a guy with this level of depth could be moved to take off his head phones and take a walk in the middle of Cory Henry's soloing. ....Then he does this, 'in revenge' - It does not get any better - brutal. These guys have something 'Xtra' in their DNA. Great Band, great guys, great music. Treasured Gift to the World.
@@blueplanet8750 check his Singapore live version. Of Sleeper, mind boggling.
Thinking exactly the same thing. I think everyone of these folk here are off of some spaceship.
You know, during Cory's solo in Lingus, I was astonished as I admired the skill and ability to play the piano. But here, I mean HOLY FUCKING SHIT, the level of emotion Shaun brings in his play is unbeliveable. My eyes were watery and there was no room left on my skin which wouldnt be covered in goose bumps :) THANK YOU!
I KNOW RIGHT?! Gosssh! They are all awesome msicians mann.
This had the same effect on me! My soul has TRULY been blessed!!!
You gotta love Shaun's reactions as Cory does his solo in Lingus.
They got madd respect for each other too. It's awesome.
Petr Jakubec i mean pretty much every member of Snarky Puppy is kind of a genius
I FEEL EXACTLY THE SAME THING!
Listen, this is the guy with epic reaction in Cory’s solo in Lingus. We all know that moment.
But here he is, pulling out this piece like nothing...
The key is how you humble yourself. And keep the amazed spirit fire inside you.
Right! Very true! Still, he is no amateur! He’s a legend, he’s the one and only Shaun Martin..
His solo on "Skate U" (off of Tell Your Friends) was what got me into these guys.
He is a multi Grammy award winning musician. Check him out on Kirk Franklin, Kim burrell, plus his personal songs and more
game recognize game, and everybody within Snarky Puppy has fucking game
he was facepalming during Lingus keyboard solo :0)
6:15 - the guitarist's respect face for the synth player
Bro that’s literally my face every time I hear that part😭
Shaun Martin, my main man!
I feel like the horn players aren't mentioned enough in these videos, they're so smooth and in sync, the way they drive most of the songs just gets to me, so powerful
Yes, a killer horn section. Such great feel. Mike Maher on trumpet wrote this song, yet he is hardly seen in the video.
They’re SUPER tight with some extremely tricky syncopated entrances. Like on Lingus, they’re regularly coming in with sixteenth-note-level precision that changes up phrase to phrase, and it’s always razor sharp
Sharp as a Katana
Totally agree.. such a great uplifting feeling
That talk box is straight fire bruh
why does it look like he is singing???
@@broor The sounds comes through the tube and he shapes what it sounds like with his mouth, thats why he is constantly moving his lips which looks kinda like singing
@@larklark2472 but i mean. why does it look like he is using his voice when all he has to do is shape his mouth. he wouldnt need to make that face if he isnt singing that high note
@@broor He could be singing at some points too songs like california love for example use that style on the chorus
@@broor A lot of players sometimes like to vocalize what they're hearing as they play it. It's a bit of an ear training thing, but he could also just be getting really into it. The talkbox itself is incapable of recognizing pitch inputs
My father who was also my best friend died 3 months ago, i wasn’t able to react and was completely numb until three days ago when i heard this masterpiece for the first time.
I dont know if they’ll every read this, but i wanna say to every musician involved especially mr. Shaun martin , please know that your art healed a part of my soul, thank you.
My condolences.
My sincerest condolences. I pray all is well with you and your family as you continue to heal.
❤
6:05 - 7:01 you can’t tell me you don’t feel this in your soul, the emotional connection is unreal.
Amen Joe!!!!
absolutely amazing
6:12 - that expression and emotion... just unreal.
does he even sing? no. its a talkbox. why does he make that face? just pure passion??
@@broor yep
Yes, I just learned he has extensive background in gospel music and I hear it and see it in this entire song
@@broor because the things he is playing are so powerful and emotional. he’s basically singing.
He looked constipated…
Absolutely amazing showcase of emotion😊
Nate Werth deserves more credit!(The Percussionist)
beasty108 Yes I agree with you. The way he coordinates his parts with Larnell is just phenomenal. He adds a nice flavor to the music. He works with the drummer instead of over playing the drums. My definition of a great percussionist!
beasty108 Werth ;)
Cameron Favell Yeah I realized I made that mistake a while ago lol.
beasty108 Werth It!
RangerEspino45 Was just thinking the same.... Ha ha....
He nails his bits, never drifts over into the silent gaps, really good..... Was saying t6o mate earlier the very same thing!!
For me, seeing Shaun Martin's face during his solo just adds so much to the song itself. So passionate.
Right? When you play music, you play it with all your body.
Dude kills it
Just saw them in Seattle and he was so animated and fun to watch. Thought he should have lost his stocking cap. Must have it glued on. His solo for this one was so more dynamic than this recording
i thought he was singing at first. but he is using a talkbox right? so he wouldnt be singing
Shaun Martin's face is a highlight of this entire DVD, if not all their performances. Just watching him watching every other musician is a treat in itself.
I SWEAR 4:35-4:51 WHERE BRASS COMES BACK IN WITH THE VOICEBOX IS INSANE !!!
Loved this tune because it showcases Shaun..as I'm writing this in 2023 there's been no word since he was hospitalized and I pray he's okay. Until then I'll continue to enjoy this tune.
"So, what instrument do you play?"
"Tube"
"Oh cool, tuba. I have a friend who-"
"No, not tuba, tube"
Talk box *
Which is technically just an effect you can use on any analog instrument.
it's a hookah
@Edmund Keeling A talkbox and a vocoder aren't the same thing.
Implying that a tuba isn't made up of a bunch of tubes anyway
@@Nihilish well no shit
This beautiful masterpiece is now 10 years old. It hasn't diminished in the slightest. Thank you Snarky Puppy. Thank you Shaun Martin and Mike Maher.
The selflessness of these guys is impressive.
When I saw that the writer is Mike Mahler, I scrolled down to see that he's the Trumpet player.
It's really not typical for musicians to write songs that don't feature themselves, but Snarky does it regularly.
Speaks to Michael League's leadership.
KUDOS!
That's one of the things that inspires me the most about Snarky Puppy. Namely the fact that each and every member is an astonishing soloist when they're in the spotlight. But they spend most of their time building eachother up when it's someone else's time to shine.
They're all beyond, Which makes every piece more fun, More improv-able, Yet more together. Great Great Song & Even greater Band.
The crescendo at 4:27 gives me the chills every damn time. Probably the best crescendo I've heard. The feeling and the intensity.... that's just on another level.
💯
the talkbox during the crescendo being slightly more flat than the other instruments make it feel even more intense and i love it
Its one of the best build ups Ive ever heard
I've been listening to this for 4 years, but damn never fail to give me chills
It’s so damn sexy! I love it!
Did anybody mention the drummer? Oh my God, the drummer...
Larnell Lewis is a God.
Legend says he learned the songs on the flight to the studio since sput searlight got sick really fast days before.
is a master of the universe
@@mogglie No, his passport or his Visa for europe was expired.
@Mikael Palm that is not a legend, I met him, asked him, he said exactly this thing (about the flight, did not mention Sput). I still do not get it though.
shaun martin is so underrated what a player
I love Shaun Martin's facial expressions - that deserves special attention!
SHAUN used
SLEEP TALK!
It’s super effective!
I'm a metal head and good lord this still one of my favorite things. I'm a drummer, and this drummer is my freaking hero. These guys are up in my favorites with guys like periphery. Amazing musicians.
Periphery! Love that shit!
glad to see a fellow periphery fan in this! both are incredible
Larnell Williams is a god!
I don't need to say anything once my profile picture has been that since P1 back in 2010... =D
Larnell Lewis and Matt Garstka are my idols
4:34 Shivers down the spine everytime
Ho my god YES
he's the one that so happy when cory do solo at lingus. and yet he have such an amazing skill and feeling here. i bet he's a humble guy.
What can you see different with these musicians/music compared to the popular music today? Passion... you can see it reflected on their faces and you can hear it .. absolutely amazing
Hell yeah, and what people don't realize is just how difficult the things these guys are doing is. The amount of work these guys have put into music and the talent they posses is far greater than any mainstream pop artist could even fathom possesing.
agreed man!
That's it, passion!! You said it. Passion and the killer music education that a lot of them received at schools like North Texas and Berklee. Just about every one of these guys already have Grammys with other artists. I came across these videos just last night! I had been seeing the name, Snarky Puppy, but I thought it would be more like the band Skinny Puppy, not that there's anything wrong with that. haha... It's not often that a band like this comes along. Rock bands come out of the woodwork every day. Some I like, but not many. I'm definitely pumped about this band. I hope to see them in Nashville in September.
drewper73 My scopes are ready to see if they swing to my town or any neighbor cities so I can go see them as well!
charvel111 I hope you get to see 'em too. I don't have a ticket yet. I should probably get on that pretty soon.
That percussionist is awesome. It's SO difficult to find a good percussionist..
That's Larnell Lewis and he is simply awesome -- great guy, too.
Im pretty sure he means Nate Werth, the percussionist, not drum set player.
8trigrammer I agree, They are a BLAST
The percussionist , is a Blast , But , The drummer is one of a kind .
Make a Twitter search
Who knew Charlie Brown's parents had so much SOUL?
6:29 That cymbal stopping-wobble-maneuver! This guy is way too smooth
5:02 the happiness and satisfaction of doing what one truly wishes to. Larnell has it and shows it right there
They are laughing because: "One funny little thing about this recording... Larnell actually enters with that epic Phil Collins-ish fill (Chris McQueen’s idea, by the way) into letter K one bar early. I frantically shook my head at him during the take, and like a total pro, he continued filling into a second bar like it was all part of the plan. A few seconds later, there is a shot on the DVD showing the two of us cracking up. Major “phew” moment there.
!
So now, officially- the fill is 2 bars."
anyone else tear up unexpectedly?
I definitely cried
I am shreaded to bits, in a most wonderful, blissful way....
Yeah :')
that solo 4:01..4:49 can make any sensible person cry, it's up there with Vera Hall's Oh, Lordy! in moving power
+Josh Johnson Every. Time.
I love seeing people laughing in the background. You know they aren't laughing because something is funny, it's because they are in complete shock and awe that these guys have as much talent as they do.
I hope y'all coming back to this masterpiece
6:13 left me speechless. It's just soooooo...oh man. Seeing it and hearing it just leaves me with chills every single time without fail.
Alexy Berard Same! And the little section starting at 4:34 too.
Alexy Berard absolutely
I have chills like 90% of the song hahah
you're goddamn right :D
+Danny James I cried at that part
4:37 is soooooo...,,,i don't even know. Amazing musicians.
well really its the whole build up to that moment and then the rest of it that is just sooo...again just an amazing song and group.
It's what I would call juicy XD
I got goosebumps
Patrick Bourke did you know that the goosebumps you get during a song is because of the brain releasing endorphins in anticipation of the climax of the song
i cried at 4:37 first time i heard this
Usually if you have tubes coming out of you it's a bad thing. Today it's a great thing.
I wanna also give credit to the drummer on the bongos. He had a full on workout man.
The fact that you're listening to exactly what they were listening to when they recorded this makes it such an interactive viewing experience! Pure magic
You feel that?
Yeah goosebumps.
Shaun Martin is insane!!
I feel goosebumps, and, 220 volts up and down the spine from that deep location in the brain....
I no right my arms and legs were numb its to sick
2021 for sleeper Shaun is fire🔥🔥
Again and again! This composition is mind blowing in a 57 year old 🤭🤗😍🤩
Shaun Martin ladies and gentleman
...Weather Report of our generation
Rather hoping that someone had noticed.
My first thought when I heard it
But better...
@@rafaelsantana4905 nah
Bang on. ..nailed it .... and steps ahead ....magnetic
Shaun literally bangs this right out of the park same as how Cory did with Lingus..
When music is this good, at least for me, it transcends into powerful medicine. I'm deeply affected everytime i hear this beautiful piece of music.
+Deep Luigi Same thing here man. It makes me want to live longer to hear more of these incredible performances ! Not that I didn't want to live long before, but see what I mean..I've just discovered these guys and I'm in awe. I'll be listening to a lot of snarky puppy in the near future !
+zappalives just found them today! I have been going to concerts and fests since 2005 and love all types of music. these guys are just amazing! Much love to you both!
Deep Luigi
I know exactly what you mean...
Deep Luigi Agreed!!!
A piece that deserves a film made for it instead of vice versa. Sean has HEART.
"If you had a time machine, what would you go back to"
"This gig - nowhen else. That'd do me."
Lemme know if you find one. No matter who I have to blow to get on that machine.
The percussionist is a MONSTER!!
Sweet Lord this is oddly heroic and empowering
honestly they deserve way more views that this
+Fleegsta This is the real music bro! the people only follow the mainstream, but this is the big deal, this music its not for ignorants, only the masters can understand this beats!!
Not necessarily masters but people who are really interested in music or fellow musicians. But i agree with you, this is real music imo and not some random beats with basic chords stuff and catchy melody. This thing is way more complex and can only be appreciated with your entire body and your soul. Cheers!
Fleegsta more people need to see these guys live.
Music is totally subjective. What make this piece great is the complexity. Tbh they are aniway
It's 5.3 million at start of 2019.
7 million views? This needs 7 billion views, everybody on earth should see this at least once.
That use of a talkbox is so beautiful
Larnell Lewis (the drummer) had to learn most of the songs on a sudden flight over when the previous drummer's passport was found to be expired. He got a few hours' practice with the band before taping. I've never met him, don't expect to, but the joy in his playing is, I think, a lesson to all of us: love what you do, no matter how difficult, and life is good. Thank you, sir. You are amazing.
Talk boxes may be the single greatest sounding thing ever made.
It lets instruments sing, after all.
thanks to bands like this. there is still hooe tht the next gen of music will still be great and alive. Educated musicians like them don't get a lot of attention because of time signature changes making youths think its weird or stupid but really its just genius work.
Agree!! Genious work here
It's not time signature changes that turn people off of music like this.
It's not laid out in a familiar pop format. And most people listen to music for vocals/lyrics.
Nothing wrong with not liking this kind of music, nothing wrong with liking it either.
+SeanithanEgan my frnds told me tht they find it weird and they didn't like it because of the timing(time sig changes) so diff ppl have diff opinions so mehhh
Adunbi Ervin Most music listeners don't know what time signatures are. Everything they listen to is in 4/4.
Your friends, by saying that, are a bit more in the know musically than most.
+SeanithanEgan yeapp. they're my band mates
Absolutely agree with you Deadpoolio the Amazing. Love Snarky Puppy and own all there CD's. I am a 61 year old full time musician, music educator, jazz and jazz fusion keyboardist, and child of the 60's and 70's. With the passing of so many great musicians and with what's pumped out over the radio these days, I was about to lose hope. But there are a TON of killer musicians and bands out there.(Just underground now and not signed to major record labels) Snarky Puppy happens to be sort of mainstream(now) fortunately. However I stumbled across a very unique competition called "Strange Arrange" on youtube. From there it lead me to lots of other great bands. Honestly, I had never heard of any of them. Music is still alive and well, it was soooo encouraging to see and hear. And most cool of all, in my opinion was the fact that many of these groups are made up of very young people 20's, and 30's. Check these bands out when you get a chance. "The Bottom 40",(Bottom 40 has same premise as Snarky Puppy, it's a huge lineup of "killer" and older session musicians out of Nashville Tennessee, they re-imagine a ton of covers, If you like S. P. you'll probably like them.) "Red Camp", Dirty Loops" "B.On.it Productions", "Majesty", The Funky Knuckles" lots more
WE LIKE IT HERE!!!!!!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
Welp, never thought I'd end up getting emotional over a vocoder performance, but here we are.
Shaun martin takes us to the core of this song I love the introduction of a talk box in this song it fits so well, Shaun you're a genious! and the horns team.. they're so goood damn
i love these guys and you guys in the comments. this is where i like to spend my time socialising.
Yeaap this is what real music is all about
+Jo Cera Oh Jo, we can socialize all day baby.
love you too
I've never seen a bongo player go at it so hard lol
Bravo sir!
Great track from Mike Maher! And amazing vocoder skills from Shaun Martin...wow!
not a vocoder - a talk box
Whoops, you're definitely right! :)
Akil Henry sort it out akil ;)
6:13 This face, this is when I lost it

thats gotta be the best talk box performance ive ever heard lol
Larnell Lewis' octupus move to silence his cymbals is fucking golden
There's no way one can be a musician and not get the urge to freakin practice! Live Music Forever!!
Moog should endorse this guy big time, because he just made me obsessed about buying one.
6:29 Man, that cymbal stop!
Dear lord Shaun--you gave me chills. CHILLS I TELL YOU.
Words can't describe how moving this piece is
that build up and break from 4:35 to 4:50 always gives me the chills..
Are they aware they are creating magic out of thin air? Do they know how incredible this is? It seems so effortless, and yet it's truly, truly amazing.
YES
The future on jazz
Yes Larnell is a deity but don't sleep on Shaun Martin! That talk box work is next level.
If you don't like snarky puppy you're wrong
Tbilisi born New Yorker here, and jazz player. To see real musicians get even this much attention is heartwarming.
Mr. Martin what a voice and paraphrasing 🙌🏻
5:02 : THIS IS HAPPINESS!!!
My love goes out to you, guys. You are awesome!!!!
This song hits me every single time I hear it. So much elegant subtlety. Such bold phrasing. Simple and complex all at once. It’s so beautifully heartbreaking while also being so incredibly uplifting. Its a gorgeous composition full of contradiction. It’s nothing less than the purest magic.
Bro Nate Werth was popping off on the percussion like holy hell dude!
Roger Troutman is smiling at Shaun Martin from heaven right now!!!
Shaun, I doubt you'll ever read this, but the emotion in your solo in this has made me cry so many times... not just cry, but _weep._ Not the first time, interestingly... but like, the tenth, all of a sudden it just hit me like a freight train. Thank you for that!
3:42 had my undivided attention
That percussion guy is insane!!!!
It will never get old
2:24 this part always makes me move, it's magical.
Cycling back through these sessions. Getting to know more of the SN players beyond the ones that get the marquee comments. Today it's props to Justin Stanton and Nate Werth. Also noting composers: this one by Maz! What a f**ing amazing crew.
All my pockets are gone! The drummer has 'em all!!
love how the guitarist was really feeling that synth solo
music has a future...right here with these musicians and others like them..WOW!
They singlehandedly saved music for this generation
***** Kinda agree, kinda don't. Lots of awesome and music out there, even the more popular ones! (examples: John Mayer, Toto, RHCP, but even an upcoming Dutch artist called 'Jett Rebel', whom I think of as one of the greatest musical talents I know so go check him out! lol) But yeah, there's hope for music, fortunately :)
The percussionist is a beast!
Hauntingly familiar without a reprise. Delightfully funky.
Shaun Martin's solo and Vocord! Wow! The diaphragm and the mental dexterity to even perform at this split genius level is paramount to the skill on display here... And I'm not even talking creativity. Amazes me every time.
