I was already expecting Jim to be carrying this movie, but it managed to be a decent movie and his presence brings it up to the level good.

This movie was way better than it had any right to be. This was a literal recipe for disaster, from the marketing, to the production hell, to just the fact it's a video game adaptation, it should have been horrible, but somehow it ended up amazing.
Also to the fact that it was directed by a first time feature director and written by people who had only done TV and shorts
@@mrcritical6751 sometimes it's new people who make great movies. Look at paranormal activity for an example, movie was a 11k budget, had people filming it who never made a movie before, and now that movie is a horror classic.

I’ll never forget when the “blue Devil”/Sanic drawing was shown and there were uncontrollable giggles in the theater for the next minute from those (me included) who recognized that piece of art

Thing that got me was that this film was genuinely funny. The dialogue was genuinely witty, and for once the pop culture references felt right because Sonic would totally do that.
They did this movie so well!

You have to appreciate that they didn't just throw in Tails, Knuckles and the whole gang this early. They focused on making this a fun standalone movie and establish Sonic and Eggman's rivalry first, and everything else was just teased and left for a future film. It's kinda like the games. Tails and Knuckles didn't appear until the second and third game.
Also call me crazy but I liked James Marsden more than Jim Carrey in this film. I find Donut Lord really likeable, more so than any other film where a cartoon character goes into the human world. That may be because unlike the other humans in those movies, at least this one doesn't feel like he's just doing it for a paycheck and doesn't actually wanna be there. He also gets extra points for not having that forced "My life was perfect and you ruined everything" moment those kind of films usually have.
Definitely. They need a whole movie with Knuckles as the antagonist and *maybe* he turns right at the end and can be a full hero in a third movie.

In part 2 show Sonic teaming up with Tails and in part 3 introduce Knuckles, just like the original game trilogy.
A subtle nod to the original SEGA games: the first game only has Sonic in it, yet since the sequel teased Tails, it can be a nod to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, where Sonic and Tails team up and is the first time we meet Tails

I loved this review! But I've got to say I disagree with James Marsden not being needed in the sequel. Not only has he signed up for multiple movies, but the character he plays (tom) basically became sonic's dad towards the end of the movie, and there are many times where the movie establishes just how important he is to sonic. Pat Casey (one of the writers of the movie), stated that sonic went from befriending tom to becoming a part of his family, (more specifically his dad), so if anything, the sequel would most likely lose its fluidity if tom was excluded.
That’s true. Tom being in multiple films of sonic would be great and seeing the relationship of sonic and Tom grow even more
I think that he should appear on the following movies but with less screen time

@@fenrirsrage4609 Chris isn't baaaaaaaaaaaaaad he had his good moments. I recently rewatched Sonic X, and I like a lot of Chris' interaction with Shadow. It only makes sense he'd idolize Sonic being an only kid, parents aren't around all that much, etc etc. But also since he IS a kid....yeah he can be kinda cringe.

Jim Carrey was fricking awesome in the movie and James Marsden made the movie even better, WAY better than I'd expected (Marsden basically deserves more recognition, he's so underrated.). Ben Schwartz did a marvelous job as Sonic too. I'm not a big fan of Sonic but I'm so hyped up about the second movie right now!
Fun Fact: That "Green Hills" farm is the Kent farm from Smallville!
This movie does make a lot more sense when you look at it as Robotnik's origin story.

Being in my 30s, this is definitely one movie I wish I saw as a teenager... I thoroughly enjoyed this.
Get BIG chairs for whomever sits in the back so it will look like you're all sitting together but the two in the back are just Hobbit sized. Lord Of The Rings style.
This movie was great. So many references. The opening with all the old games gave me a great nostalgic feeling. And the pixel animation during the credits was cool.
Since its confirmed that there's going to be a sequel, I think they are going to have Sonic grow as a character into what we know from the video games, especially with Tom around because he seemed be a bit snarky like Sonic in the games
Tails: Sonic is my best friend in every universe! Even Anti-Tails and Scourge are best friends, before growing apart.
I thought the same. I think it'll be really sweet if they turned it into a coming of age story where he slowly gains OG sonic's confidence and cool personality, whilst still maintaining his kind-hearted, delightful self from the first movie. And since it's been confirmed that tom became his family (more specifically his dad), it would be wholesome if he was sonic's emotional support and helped him grow as the sonic we know him as.

I loved this movie. There were so many sonic game references to it. I especially loved how Sonic beat Robotnik. Continuously hitting his dome to where you're seeing the cracks like the Sonic games. You guys keep referencing dark Sonic from satam but there was also a lighter Sonic show "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog" voiced by the same actor. Loved that show.

I know that Jim Carrey was great as Robotnik but honestly, Ben Schwartz as Sonic is so perfect. I’ve always liked characters he voice acted (Randy Cuningham, Dewey Duck, etc.) and he made me really love Sonic now (I’ve actually never liked the game/slash TV series Sonic-Idk Why to be honest; but this Sonic that really looks so good with Ben as a voice actor of his, I must say I’am a fan now).
I really like the way all of you did the lights. BLUE FOR SONIC AND YELLOW FOR TAILS. All of you should be proud of yourselves.
the little red animals that were hunting sonic in the beginning of the movie were Echidna's which is what Knuckles is, if you look then you can see that they have the spiky gloves that Knuckles has.

It was the first movie I watched with my 5 year old, on our own, at the cinema. It was just after the first wave of corona (in Japan), so there were only 2 other people and he didn't have to be too quiet. It also had nothing in it that scared him in the dark cinema. He absolutely loved it. He was laughing and laughing and I loved it too. So, it'll remain a special movie for me. Very relieved!

The Sonic franchise is so weird because it's so wacky and cartoonish most of the time, but it can evolve into Dragonball style fights and actually be pretty threatening with it's characters and stakes, which is why so many kids/teens are drawn to it.
It's a tricky world for people to get into because they see these cute little animal characters and think it's weird that it ever gets serious but honestly that's the charm, like TMNT or similar cartoons.
it's funny to think this was the last film i saw in theaters (back before the... outbreak hit America) and i brought my mom along and we had a blast. theater wasn't fully packed but the few people we had were fun to be around. big fans of Sonic. i can't hate this film. Sonic is great, Jim was great, the movie is just great! and after hearing a sequel is in the works WITH TAILS! i'm pumped!
I love how the little white patch of fur makes it look like the one big giant eyeball he has in the games.
I genuinely loved this movie. It was adorable and heartwarming with a batshit crazy Jim Carey performance - all I ever wanted from a sonic movie.
I watched this movie, not expecting much. I thought Jim Carey would break his back carrying this movie. I honestly was planning on calling it a 4/10.
Boy was I wrong.
Characters were lovable. Sonic himself looked fantastic and almost had the personality from either Sonic Adventure or Sonic Adventure 2 (still my absolute favorite Sonic game). Jim Carey was the perfect choice for Robotnik/Eggman as he is literally the only man alive that can be as expressive as an animated character. I was ready to call it a good movie, then the credits came on and nostalgia hit me like a sack of bricks.
After all that, I still squealed like a fangirl (despite being a 6ft+ grown ass man) when Tails showed up. Without a doubt, my favorite Sonic character. Hell, even during my edgiest years of loving Shadow, I still had a soft spot for that little cinnamon roll of a fox.
The mushroom planet (Mushroom Hill) is part of Angel Island, which is where Knuckles lives, so...Knuckles as the antagonist for Sonic 2?

Man I love that old show and theme
I loved the OST for Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 when I was a kid. The guitar riffs were so good and Chaos as Super Sonic was just so hype for my little kid self.
Honestly, if Sonic could have just been a darker colour blue as well, they'd have nailed the design for me. Love how Tails looks, love how Knuckles looks in the trailers for the sequel. The evolution of Robotnik and his design was great. Carrey really hammed it up, and yet somehow made it work very well. His relationship with Stone was hilarious. Way better movie than I was expecting. Had some cheesy jokes, but we aren't really the target audience any more so you have to expect some kid-friendly humour.

I'm surprised they didn't pick up that the Green Hills farm was the same farm they used for Smallville.
This movie definitely was a set up for more to come, with the origins of Eggman and Sonic, then also Tails coming at the end while still being a fun action movie. My only complaint is the lack of using Sonic soundtrack.
Also it’s one of the last movies I saw in theaters and the Tail post-credit scene was an awesome reaction lol.
Watching this reaction/movie again makes me realize that Robotnik's line of "...in my orphan face" might be troublesome considering the additional character in the sequel.
Really makes you think Robotnik's *real* reason of working for the goverment.

I literally just watched this movie last night, then I see your reaction video happened yesterday.
I went into this movie expecting just a cheesy kids comedy, but it was actually a surprise.
Couple notes
1. Healthiest couple relationship ive ever seen ever, like holy shit, its so pleasently nice not to have drama tied to it
2. Jim Carrey
3. The writers clearly had respect for the source, i point to the shoes, they took sonics shoes and made a heartfelt, emotional moment that means a lot to sonic out of it, so effective that some people only realize its his actual shoes after a moment, because of how powerful the moment is, that is how they show respect for the source material, ie, dont make stuff like that a short sighted joke, give it meaning that means something
Damn Eric, thats a great voice man
except they do use music from the games and shows. The soundtrack they use to introduce Dr "I've come to make an announcement" Robotnik is a slowed down orchestral version of his theme from The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. The melody that plays when you see the earth based Greenhills is the greenhills zone music from the games. This is the problem I have with criticizing entertainment with out fact checking yourself first.
I recently finally got chance to see this movie and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was.. like it wasn't a cringe attempt at trying to like make Sonic fully realistic but also was grounded enough and just.. was better than expected and so excited for a sequel with Tails involved
As a Sonic fan who is way too invested in the Sonic lore I am very excited for the second movie.
This one is fun but doesn't take many risks. But it makes some nods to the lore that let fans know the writters still have that in mind. Like the tribe at the begining is an Echidna tribe (Knuckles' species) which are actually extinct in the games.
I think what the writters where going for with this movie was some sort of origin story, which explains why Sonic seems younger and a bit more immature and vulnerable compared to the games. Also the way they are gradually building up Robotnik into the vilain he is in the games is way more interresting than having already being that vilain.
Like they really tried contextualise a lot of things, like the way Sonic called Robotnik *
"Eggman" based on his robots being egg-shaped and doesn't come out of nowhere either because it's been established in the begining of the movie that Sonic likes giving nicknames. But it also doesn't want to just follow the games and introduces its own ideas (which is a good thing to me).
Anyway, in the end I'd that movie was fun but plays it too safe for me. But what has been established here has the potential to build up into something really great and I really hope it will because the Sonic franchise has told some really awesome and touching stories that deserves to be represented.
