i dont think we will get a sequel for some reason this movie was shit on, seems like if its not just another copy/paste marvel movie no one cares, and i dont get why no one cared about this movie, especially as its cyberpunk which is pretty big right now with everyone hyped over that game, perhaps a sequel would do better once the game is out and everyone is in full cyberpunk mode
@@fabriziopedani5315 Don't worry, I bought the deluxe edition straight away after watching the movie (not on mars chronicle yet or anything other than the 6 from the box). I'm a diehard newbie now! >:D
@Captain Twice haha yea, hence the " *Almost* all" though I don't think he was nearly as bad as people say. It's not like he was stellar or anything but he was at least servicable. Rosa, Christoph and Ali totally killed it, they're almost indistinguishable from the original. Chiren doesn't have that much of a character but the only thing bugging me with Jennifer's precense in the film was her dark hair and if that's the biggest issue one has with a character it's really not much to complain about :P
And then you have captain marvel where the actress feels too good for the movie to put any effort to at least look like the character so they were forced to bring in doubles to play some of their body parts.
in the manga, Ido had a cat named Alita, that had died, which he used as the name for her, there was no Chiren in the manga, and so no daughter of theirs named Alita (so, the manga actually was close to you getting the dog and naming it ALita, except it was a cat that Ido had and named as Alita, lol) chiren was created in the OVA-anime, but I don't know if they had a daughter named Alita or not (I've not watched the OVA-anime yet) there's quite some differences between the manga and the OVA-anime (as they took some creative licensing, diverging in some content a bit from the manga)
Alita was one of the surprises of the year for me. I knew nothing about it, gave no shits about it, but went to see it with a coworker and absolutely loved it. Glad to hear that you guys enjoyed it as well!
This has been a weird year for me. I was cautiously anticipating a manga-to-live action movie that ends up being my favorite movie in years. I was a teenager when Gunnm was released, and 30 years later it's turned into one of my favorite movies in years. Then a small comic parodying superheroes (The Boys) I hadn't been aware of is adapted into an incredible series on amazon. Now prequel series of one of my favorite movies from childhood, Dark Crystal, is looking absolutely stunning in trailers and is about to drop on netflix in about a week. The movies and series I've really enjoyed have been coming from unlikely sources lately.
The disconnect of Hugo and Alita I think was intentional. In the Manga Yugo (Hugo in the movie) is obsessed with going to Zalem and never really pays attention to Alita. It's a very one sided relationship with Alita being the only one truly in love.
I think the problem is more that they put too much in one movie lol. I mean it was great for how much they jammed in there, but if only Hugo/Yugo had had more time to explore his motivations and maybe they'd had some extra time to show him going kinda crazy after becoming a cyborg or something... Instead I think they tried to make him a more of a standard love interest, but didn't have the proper time to do that either... I dunno... Oh well, still a pretty amazing adaptation of a mixture of the OVAs and manga, but it's a shame because his end in the OVAs was so much more powerful and such a big moment when I watched it originally... As cool as motorball was, I kinda wish it was cut out in favour of all the other plot points, kinda like the anime... Or maybe if they'd found a way to make this 2 movies or something... That might have other issues though... I'm super glad it exists and that I got to see it in cinemas regardless.
They put that chapeltop scene in the movie for a reason. When he said "look at this view", Alita was looking down at Iron City, because she felt the place she currently resides is beautiful. Then he is like "no, up there" and she says "oh.." This was meant to show they had very different perspectives on their current situation, and it showed that they, from the start, had very different goals. It was a romance that was never meant to be, so people shouldn't be acting like the romance ruins the movie. It actually enhances the movie by breaking away from the cliche that all romances are supposed to be a mutual feeling.
I feel a little bad for Keenan Johnson because he was just OK but frequently standing next to Waltz and especially Rosa, who had the performance of a lifetime. In a typical movie he would have been passable but certainly not great, but next to Waltz and Rosa he looks extremely outclassed. I'm sure he tried his best, but all his scenes are with incredible talents.
The mocap in this movie is top notch, especially that scene where she grabs Zapan by his neck and tosses him. They really had Rosa Salazar grab Ed Skrien and toss him into a table with the mocap suits on.
I'm unfortunate to be extremely sensitive to artificial artist-only drawn CGI movement. When a live actor obviously is replaced with a clearly CGI model moving in a way nothing in reality ever would, it is immediately noticeable to me and breaks immersion for any scene like that. I noticed this didn't happen in the second Grewishka fight, but I knew there is no way Rosa was flipping around like that in space pajamas and wire work isn't going to be able to look that natural and move at exactly the right speed and direction. I did some searching and discovered they had a Cirque du Soleil acrobat in a performance capture suit actually doing those flips in the scene where Alita is evading the grind cutters. That is why is is so incredibly smooth and natural looking. Even the handstand after she gets her berserker body is performance captured by an acrobat who can actually do a one-arm handstand like that. i.redd.it/ng0m0tqfea031.jpg
1. Alita has a human brain. She is human. 2. A cyborg = a real human with mechanical parts. (Unlike a robot) 3. All the people in the Iron City are cyborgs, some more modified than others. 4. Nova controls cyborgs, AKA, Humans. 5. Alita was CGI but it all was performed by Rosa Salazar. Even her face was used to create Alita's face. @Blind Wave
She learned a number of martial arts disciplines, a lot shown on screen are Wing Chun and Keet Kune Do; she learned them from Ron Belicki, who in turn learned them from Dan Innosanto, who in turn learned them from Bruce Lee.
Diana Lee Inosanto also trained Rosa. Diana said Rosa trained furiously. She had to send her home once because Rosa got way too sick to train but tried to keep going anyway.
@@AKSBSU Belicki is not only Innosanto's student but also son-in-law, Diana is a very accomplished martial artist in her own rights. How Alita broke a table with Zapan's face was a pure Wing Chun technique: the parry/pull/attack sequence, and a lot of Wing Chun can be seen in her "mirror punch" training sequence too.
@Pluralizes Everythings I think it is pretty but even in her more mature form I didn't feel attracted to her. She is just very pretty. Maybe her look is simply too foreign to do that. But still you can appreciate her design. Both of her bodys was done soo good. For me the best cyborg designs I have ever seen. And I see a lot of SciFi. But those things were a piece of art.
@@Juice-chan That's the intention. Even in the manga Alita is more like a daugther you want to cheer for, support and protect (yeah protect, tho I won't spoil why). ;) Edit: This part of the manga is pretty much the prologue that sets her up for her actual journey.
@@NameHierEinfuegen I have read the original story so I know that Kishiro wanted her to have this doll like features. He gave her even those octolips. And I am happy they left those out. Also the changes to Doc Ido were really smart. It made Alita with the Father/Daugther arc way more rounded and self contained as first movie story. The only thing that suffered under the adaptation is Makakus character. He is interesting but I see why they couldn't dive deeper into his character.
@J G You can't say if something is for me or not. I am just telling how I experienced her. Kishiro had also put in some fan service in his Mangas. So maybe others feel attracted that way. I just can't. I can't see her as a daughter either. I have no kids so I don't know this feeling. Maybe she is the best friend type. Or sb you find a way to come together after a long time. I don't know. All I know is that I have a huge respect for her as a person. I couldn't imagine a better companion to travel with and explore the world.
Me too. I walked out of the movie saying I have to see that again. That's the first movie in many years that I have done that with. Strangely the last one was also a James Cameron movie Avatar.
It’s not convoluted and the flow is really good. That’s why it’s a good adaptation movie. They really did took time in making the film. I can give them more time, years, as long as there is a sequel.
This is one of those underrated movies that absolutely deserves a sequel. I surprisingly loved it and am genuinely upset that I didn’t get to see it in theaters
This is why we encourage video sales and rentals. Tell others about it. Buy the videos, rent it, gift it. Watching it on the big screen was a great experience...thank you for your review, one of the best you have ever done! Rosa Salazar is Oscar worthy of her performance hands down. Let's get that sequel! You can read about Alita's world in the manga. Check out the extras too.
It makes a huge difference when the producer and the director are fans of the actual manga :D. It is based on the manga, but they took elements from the OVA as well (e.g. Chiren). The manga consists of three series so far: The original 9 volumes of "Battle Angel Alita", the alternative ending / continuation "BAA: Last Order" (19 volumes) and finally "BAA: Martian Chronicles" you could call a prequel (currently 5 volumes, ongoing). Trivia: Everything in Iron City is cybernetic. The Centurion as well as the Deckmen (that talking head when you turn in a bounty) got lobotomized brains from those turned in criminals as "CPU". In the manga Alita's initial body was made out of an assortment of cyborg hooker parts Ido bought with bounty money (the only beautiful parts available). There are artificial wombs as well, so if a full replacement cyborg wants to have kids, they can. Alita's brain was in stasis, the emergency life support in her head coated the brain in some kind of nanotech gel. She was found on top of that trash because there was a catastrophic scrap avalanche a few days before (happens from time to time ... considered a natural disaster ... another reason why Iron City is no place for natural humans). Btw. it's a shame they don't mention it but that fountain wall around the city is actually a high pressure waterjet wall :D. If you want to keep in cyborgs you need something better than just a plain wall ;).
I remember that they explained the Manga that the high pressure wall is strong enough to RIP even cyborgs apart. Not just ordinary humans. It isn't also regular water but kinda more thick fluid.
Also I must somehow forgot about the nanogel. This was an important question where I thought that the Manga didn't explain properly. I just know that her ship gets ripped apart by an explosion looked strange. A fireblast that appeared like an elemental. It ripped apart the ship and even attacked her when she was floating away from the ship and ripped half of her body away.
@@Juice-chan Yup, exactly :). And I think it was kept in focus by an electromagnetic field, as high speed waterflows build up a charge (tho I'm not sure if I remember that one correctly or if that is something I got out of a scientific paper :D)
@@Juice-chan I don't remember exactly where that nanogel was mentioned. But it was in another context and was compared to the technology that saved Alita.
Alita was absolutely bad ass!!!! 💯💯💯💯💯 possibly then best anime adaptation to live action... ESPECIALLY with the cast.... one of my favorite movies in the past few years...
It was holding two spots in the top 5 for awhile on Amazon. Alita and Shazam both got hurt in the box office by the big MCU releases and their monster advertising campaigns, but fortunately they've been doing much better in digital and disc sales.
@@AKSBSU Thank god. Capt marvel can rot for all I care. I hate politics in movies. This is a strong female with a story struggle and purpose. Nothing like Capt Marvel or current Star Wars
They call it performance capture as she is acting right along side the other actors and her entire performance is captured, her body's physical movement and her facial emoting in every scene. It goes far beyond just motion capture.
@@jineshshetty1052 You do know what an opinion is, right? Everyone's entitled to one, no one's forced to think Endgame is the best thing ever just cause of box office sales. You really can't compare Endgame with all the hype it built up over years, to another movie that's hardly known to most audiences and that the "critics" didn't liked...
Jinesh Shetty I love marvel but endgame was not the best movie of 2019. Literally 30 min of action, mostly drama. Infinity war was 10 times better. Alita for the win!
Just a few things: 1. James Cameron saw someone on set reading Alita manga while filming Titanic. He borrowed the mangas, read them all, and contacted the writer to lock down a movie deal if it were to ever be made into a movie. Writer agreed. Apparently, Avatar was just practice to make this movie. 2. There are four original manga. This movie was a combination of the first two, and introduced Jashugan, the fan favorite to win final champion. 3. Did you guys notice Alita had a different body at the end? Nova. He never stops playing his little games. 4. Zapan definitely comes back. He gets Alita's URM body and goes on a rampage.
Great movie, loved it. As far as the fully CGI Alita, they used Weta Digital's Performance Capture pipeline. Lots to read about it if you are interested but the most important thing is that it truly captures the actresses performance and translates it to the digital character, they actually have a fully digital model of Rosa Salazar on which they track the capture data first in order to make sure the interpretation of the data is accurate as far as how all the muscles are moving on her face, then they move it onto the Alita model.
Exactly very well explained. It was cool to see them capturing her emotions on the model in real time. She even acted when stunt woman did things she couldn't do any more. Also cool fact they needed 9 woman to bring Alita to life.
@@Neocoolzero that would be pretty funny considering one of the reasons Cameron made Avatar was to push CGI/MoCap technology forward because back then he felt it wasn't good enough to make the Alita movie he had envisioned.
This is the first time I see people react to something while they show interest, don't break down the movie on every little detail, don't try to be super funny all the time and just genuinely show appreciation for the movie. These kind of reactions are really fun to watch!
Rosa Salazar, played Alita. They used performance capture to get all her facial expression. Rosa also trained for a lot of the fight scenes. I highly recommend getting the manga. The movie itself covers several books and the OVA. Cameron read the book and fell in love with the character in the 90s he had to wait for technology to catch up to do Alita any real justice. A good portion of the movie is a direct copy of scene from the manga. The tear cutting scene is from the manga.
Since there was a discussion about OVAs, I thought it would be worth mentioning exactly what the definition of an OVA is. OVA stands for Original Video Animation, and basically just means it's a made for home media release. So it's something that was never intended to air on TV or in theaters, but is released as physical media (DVD/BD or VHS back in the day). Often time they are bundled with releases of manga or light novels.
Panzer Kunst was so powerful because other cyborgs used built in advantages and weapons while martian berserkers, Kunsters, took martial arts traditions and applied them in their robotic bodies. So normal cyborg would heat up engine and fire his fist trough a wall or armour, Kunster would take a stance put their hip into a punch and THEN activate whatever extra weaponry they had installed. It was a force multiplier to know how to use what they had to maximum effect and also the reason why they had humanoid size and shape instead of hulking monstrosities or tanks like Earth tech.
Fantastic reaction. Alita makes a lot of fun to watch and rewatch again with friends and family. It is really cool to hear new thoughts from other people. Like how thought of Nova being an AI that just memes being a person and stuff.
THIS IS MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME!! SAW IT THREE TIMES IN THEATRES AND BOUGHT THE 4K VERSION. SPREAD THE WORD FOR A SEQUEL. FINALLY YOU GUYS SAW IT :):) Also love the Star Wars the clone wars channel!!! And hope you see SHAZAM soon!
I'm so glad that you guys loved it as much as I did! I'm really glad I got to see your reaction even if it meant ya missed it in theaters. I'm also really, _Really_ hoping that a sequel happens, 'cause it's had really strong word-of-mouth, and especially good BluRay sales, too. It's SO good.
Guillermo del Toro showed the manga to Cameron mid 90's who fell in love With and bought the rights for audiovisual medium. Dark Angel With jessica alba was his First attemp at a based story.
There's a pic of Cameron and Worthington during the shoot of Avatar...and Cameron is wearing an Alita shirt. Since he owns it, I'm pretty sure he'll find a way to make the sequel.
@@lonewolf3314 The "it" was meant to refer to "rights for the audiovisual medium" from the original post. No confusion meant on my part, thanks for pointing it out!
Just so y'all know, *EVERYONE* in the movie is human, none of them are robots. Some, like the motorball players are MASSIVELY modified, but their brains are still human brains. Alita has a (heavily modified) human brain and spine (same w/Grewishka), but everything else is cybernetic. The idea behind the whole series is 'what does it mean to be human?'. Does someone who is 99% metal still count as a human being? Do they still have a soul? Alita is sort of our expy throughout the series as the writer explore that theme. It's a FANTASTIC manga and y'all should definitely check it out.
I watched 5x in theatre. So many fans watched more than 20x. Many claimed they watched more than 50x. The record is from a China guy who watched more than 110x or was it 130+? If it ever happens to be in IMAX 3D again, you guys must watch. So awesome.
Saw it 2x in IMAX 3D, 1x in 2D, and bought the 4K Blu-ray steelbox and entire manga series. So pleased to finally watch a live action adaptation to a manga and feel so satisfied with it. The adaptation reminded me a lot of the adaptation of The Lord of the Rings in the 2000s in that the authors clearly had a deep understanding and appreciation of the characters and story.
surfitlive No, it's just relatively few people who went that many times. I personally went three times but few people in my city went at all. I can't compensate for that by myself. I think OP is stuck in their filter bubble if they believe many people went 50x. A few vocal ones, sure, but many? It's easy to get excited when you're caught up in the fandom. It really wasn't popular to begin with and a small number of people going many times can't compensate for even a few days of sold-out cinemas, no matter how much us fans would wish it. I really hope the long tail sales are enough to make a sequel worthwhile.
@@Yggdrasil42 I went five times, my boy went thrice, my brother and my daughter twice and my wife once. I am sure you are right. Very few would have gone more than 10x. Those who had, would be the vocal ones in the forum or UA-cam.
@@Yggdrasil42 A guy posted his tickets for every single day for two months staright. One big picture in chronological order. Sure, an usher or something could have swiped tickets out of the trash every day to pretend, but I do not think so.
@@highlander31527 I don't dispute that. That's one guy though. Not many. My point was that a few people going every day for months can't compensate for the lack of sold out weekends across the world. I hope the long tail sales add up.
Highly recommended. I've watched it 2x in IMAX 3D, once in 2D theater, then about 3 more times on 4K Blu-ray Dolby Vision at home. I've been a fan of Japanese animation and manga since the late 80s, but this is sincerely the first time I've actually been pleased with a manga to live action translation. Rosa, Waltz, Rodriguez's direction, and WETA's tech work were amazing.
the CGI works because its an altered version of rosa's face. the little scar on her nose, all her micro expressions are all captured in the tiniest detail. plus the character has heart and is likable.
laramiaizz it means stuff that’s niche and not well known about and people complain about it because they don’t understand it and want to change it for the same reason
Less about supporting nerd culture and more about supporting the good movies and adaptations. Supporting a movie just because it is an anime or video game adaptation leads to things like Dragonball Evolution, The Fullmetal Alchemist movie, and 7 Resident Evil Movies, only one of which I have heard good things about.
2nd guy from the right has the accurate perspective on Hugo's character. You see the chemistry and emotion from Alita because she commits to everything 100%, but Hugo does not have the same depth of attachment until the end. Until he turns away from Zalem on the cable, right before he dies, Zalem holds prominence over Alita as the object of his affection. If Hugo never felt strong chemistry or had anything other than a passing interest, then the actors' portrayal of the character is spot on.
Thanks for reviewing Alita: Battle Angel! Please do your best to spread the word so that others can enjoy this great movie, too! It is just a crime that it didn't do as well as it should domestically. Hopefully with everyone's support, we would get the whole trilogy! Buy those Blu-rays and DVDs, people!
I was hoping you'd do this eventually. I knew you'd love this movie. We're scared it might not get the sequels it deserves too. Everyone, please lend it your energy and buy the blu-ray! \o/
The chemistry between Hugo and Alita being a disconnect was on purpose. IN the source material Hugo wants to go to Zalum more then anything. Even above finding love. He always maintains his distance til the end, it was always a one sided love.
Alita Battle Angel was so underated when it released, but After I watched it the movie just blows my mind because of how good it is, one of the best movie I've ever seen for sure. I hope for the sequel too.
Vector (Mahershala Ali) is also the actor from Luke Cage. He played Cornell "CottonMouth" Stokes. He was amazing in moonlight as well. Oscar well earned!
I love this movie so much. I'm really hoping for a sequel.🙏🏽 Rosa Salazar did an amazing job playing Alita. I know it's a fully-animated cg character but it's with the aid of motion capture of her movements and facial expressions.
I saw ALITA : BATTLE ANGEL twice at the movie theater and her eyes are NOT bothersome once you sit and watch the movie in its entirety . I would like you to react to TRUTH or DARE by MADONNA .
The Manga series was great, If the movie was to follow it faithfully though it would have to have been R because of the heavy violence, there was supposedly a lot of footage cut which I hope we will eventually see. Rosa and Ed Skrein both were wearing full motion capture suits, like wetsuits and the work that went into the animation is impressive when you see the behind the scenes stuff. I saw this movie in the theaters 4 times, some things didn't work as well in this adaptation and that I would have prefered to see, but I loved it
The guy was saying how he was going to wear her like a pendant but keep her alive so he can hear her beg him for mercy every day. So she attacked him and said: "F--- your mercy!" And Hugo is dead, he dies in the manga/OVA, almost exactly like that, so yes he's dead. The Iron City was really built, it even has running water...
FYI, the term OVA specifically denotes a production that is produced for a home video format rather than a more traditional broadcast format. One of the benefits of this is that there is no need to restrict the production to any specific duration or length, either in terms of individual episodes or episodes over any particular "season". This is why an OVA can be anything from a short one shot. something that does restrict itself to a standard length, a short or full length feature or just about anything in between, in any mix that works for the production. You can think of it as the precursor to what you see happening now with original productions for streaming media content.
I knew after watching the trailer they were following the Manga and so I took my entire family to see this in 3D the day it came out. They all loved it. I found myself upset by all the negative feedback about her eyes from youtubers. I personally loved her bigger eyes, and think they helped audiences connect with her better later in the movie.
For more insight on the movie itself you actually have to watch the bonus material it explains a whole lot. AND I think you guys would love the anime. The live action is VERY CLOSE to the source material. Check it out. The title is GUNNM! Actually this is for anybody who hasn't seen it.
I saw Alita like 3 or 4 times in IMAX. The CGI is just a whole new level. Unless the movie gets released in IMAX again, I will never get to experience it at its best ever again. It's such a shame that so few people watched it.
The writer specifically made the manga not take place in Japan, it took place in Kansas I think. He did that because he didn't want it to only appeal to Japanese people. That's why the theme of the manga seemed like it wasn't too "Japanesey." And the question about whether this was based on the manga or OVA, it's a mix of the two. Dr. Ido's hammer is pulled directly from the anime/manga. If you want to help it get a sequel, buy the blu rays and promote it as much as you could.
The manga actually didn't stop in 95, it just changed names to "Alita: Last Order" because it switched publishers. The story has just gotten crazier and more awesome over the years, and is now being released under the name of Alita: Mars Chronicle. Battle Angel is crazed transhuman mad max adventures in and around the Scrapyard. In Last Order we go into orbit and deal with a whole solar system of totally different insane future societies (I like the one secretly run by an african flash gordon hero whose morals have been corrupted) by having an amazing cyborg kung fu tournament. And so far Mars Chronicle is mostly flashbacks to crazy Edgar Allen Poe shenanigans on a war torn Mars so that's cool.
There's also a neat moment in Last Order where we get a giant volume-long flashback about how vampire lovers with inhuman swordfighting skills dueled each other to the death in a post-apocalyptic nuclear winter to determine the fates of the last surviving members of humankind. In the early stages of this battle one of them throws a humvee with their sword.
Whatch the extras. There they give more information about the war 300 years ago, cyborgs stuff and motorball. As you said, is not something you need to fill any plotholes, but interesting facts about Alita's world.
I really enjoyed this movie. A lot. I saw it in theaters and the ticket was only $4 (thanks T-Mobile Tuesdays). I figured, eh it could be a good way to kill some time, but it surprised me. The CGI looked so much better than the original trailer showcased. I'd like a sequel to this if possible.
Alita is hands-down my favorite movie of the year. And I am an MCU fan, but Endgame didn't leave me with the same feeling of "holy crap, what did I just see" that Alita gave me. I left the theater in a euphoric trance by how awesome it was, so I ended up seeing it 7 more times in the theater before it ended its' run. I even went to the Iron City experience twice in hopes that it would help get a sequel. I never heard of this character and world until I saw the movie, but I'm already a huge huge fan of it. I ordered and am waiting for the manga collection.
I bought all the manga at once but the deluxe box set of Battle Angel Alita was on backorder for months. Once I got it I read through it, then Last Order, and lastly Mars Chronicle in the span of 2 weeks. You're in for a wild ride 😎👍
When u watch behind scenes vid bits u realise how awesome Rosa Salazar is, she does a lot of those flicks and tumbles herself for real!! She's like a friggin real life ninja! 😳😳😳
You can read about the Alita world on Kindle books (not the manga). Great movie and reaction, guys. Rosa Salazar had to practice A LOT, take a look at the BTS (it's on UA-cam).
Don't underestimate how much of the acting came from Rosa. She was absolutely spectacular and the anchor of the entire movie. I think this movie sets new standards for CG and WETA are tech wizards that deserve all the praise they get, but Rosa was also absolutely vital for making this movie work. The casting of Rosa was as vital for this movie as Gal Gadot was for Wonder Woman. I don't believe anyone could have played Alita better than Rosa did. media1.tenor.com/images/9a8b0ce5f3d95e7dac73e947bd294d1f/tenor.gif?itemid=13549394 66.media.tumblr.com/64c2ead4311936d9d58ea19d52a7bde1/tumblr_pmbk28ujCQ1x0bvwko2_540.gif
Visually the movie is amazing, like it's so beautiful to look at. The world-building is top notch. My issue with the movie was the story and the characters, along with some clunky dialogue. I think the movie could've been better, but that's just me! I would definitely like to see a sequel! It's really cool to see you guys react to more anime movies! I'm still hoping you guys can react to Your Name and Redline!
They tried to put too much into one film (in my opinion)... Possibly cutting out motorball and giving everything else more time, like the anime did, is the most obvious solution I can think of, but I dunno... Personally, the dialogue felt like the original to me lol so I kinda liked it... I maybe half agree on the characters... I don't think they were that bad in context and a few did pretty well (Alita herself more or less carried the movie for me)... But yeah, simply not enough time to do everything justice... I still think it's great for what it is, but yeah, it's a bit of a shame that it wasn't just that bit better.
The original story by Yukito Kishiro should not really be filmed by Japanese people because it's not intended to be a Japanese story; it was originally set in what is now Missouri, very few of the characters were Japanese and they're meant to speak English, so there's no disconnect in that aspect. Sure enough the movie changed its setting to Panama City, but it made the accusation of "white-washing" against the movie by its detractors totally absurd. In his UA-cam channel, Shadiversity examined the practicality of Dr Ido's rocket hammer and concluded that it's quite plausible as an effective weapon. At the start of the film we were given a brief glimpse of Zalem, but we are not meant to know much about it, no more than the denizens of Iron City; it's a beautiful, high-class place for beautiful, high-class people. Ido and Chiren lived there as cybernetic surgeons, but having given birth to a disabled child they were not considered beautiful anymore, so they got evicted. Chiren was obsessed with the idea of going back, but Ido turned his back against it and said nothing about what's up there, for he ceased to consider it as a place worth his troubles.
Nice review, very interesting reactions. Also, about of multiple levels of worlds, Zalem is the base of the space elevator. That's all I have to say. The world building in this universe is beyond impressive.
The manga is still ongoing. Its divided into 3 parts. Battle Angel Alita, Battle Angel Alita Last Order, and the final and thrid series Battle Angel Alita Mars chronicles is currently running. This movie was super accurate to the manga, sure some details were omitted and and they changed some things, but this overall is very accurate. Cameron is a huge fan of the manga, he wants to adapt the whole series.
I think it's been the most impressive adaptation of source materials I've seen since the Lord of the Rings movies. You could tell the screenwriters had a deep understanding of the characters and story. Things that were condensed or changed, which is necessary for a time-limited movie format, were always loyal to the spirit of the source materials.
Manga and OVA question: Mostly adapted from the manga, but there were some scenes that were very loyal to the OVA. Chiren was an OVA-only character. The eye black (dog's blood in movie and OVA) scene was like the OVA rather than the way it was done in the manga.

Hi, I joined your patreon but I cant find the reaction :( pls help
i dont think we will get a sequel for some reason this movie was shit on, seems like if its not just another copy/paste marvel movie no one cares, and i dont get why no one cared about this movie, especially as its cyberpunk which is pretty big right now with everyone hyped over that game, perhaps a sequel would do better once the game is out and everyone is in full cyberpunk mode

ALITA FANS, TO-GEDDA...STRONG
Rosa Salazar was mo-capped, and a lot of the choreography was her doing it. She trained hard for this role, and it shows.
Benjamin Rogers
She was brilliant :)
She was fucking brilliant... Almost all of them were
@Captain Twice haha yea, hence the " *Almost* all" though I don't think he was nearly as bad as people say.
She killed it just like Christoph Walts as Ivo and Mahershala Ali as Vector/Nova.
I loved the movie but im worried it wont get its sequel :(

We can if we buy those Blue rays! Let's act now!
I remember watching this movie the day after I got my new puppy. And I ended up loving the character Alita so much I named my puppy Alita.
in the manga, Ido had a cat named Alita, that had died, which he used as the name for her, there was no Chiren in the manga, and so no daughter of theirs named Alita
(so, the manga actually was close to you getting the dog and naming it ALita, except it was a cat that Ido had and named as Alita, lol)
chiren was created in the OVA-anime, but I don't know if they had a daughter named Alita or not (I've not watched the OVA-anime yet)
there's quite some differences between the manga and the OVA-anime (as they took some creative licensing, diverging in some content a bit from the manga)
Nice.
I Did basically the same thing
Alita is a very cute name for a puppy!

Rosa Salazar said it best at SD ComicCon: “Buy those blu-rays baby”
That’s how you get a sequel.
The RosAlita has issued her orders for the Alita Army.
She’s also in the upcoming “season”? of Short Treks along w/ H.Jon Benjamin... excited to see her in Starfleet gold
The disconnect of Hugo and Alita I think was intentional. In the Manga Yugo (Hugo in the movie) is obsessed with going to Zalem and never really pays attention to Alita. It's a very one sided relationship with Alita being the only one truly in love.
That is true. But still it was really close to the original manga especially near the end
AKSBSU after watching the movie quite a few times, I think Ed Skrein actually takes the title of the most underrated performance hands down.
@@AKSBSU that's.. really cool to know! Thank you!
1. Alita has a human brain. She is human.
2. A cyborg = a real human with mechanical parts. (Unlike a robot)
3. All the people in the Iron City are cyborgs, some more modified than others.
4. Nova controls cyborgs, AKA, Humans.
5. Alita was CGI but it all was performed by Rosa Salazar. Even her face was used to create Alita's face.

Rosa Salazar (Alita) is an accomplished expert in the Martial Arts and did almost all of her own stunts in the movie. I thought it was great!
She earned her fandom title RosAlita. She is the only one for that role.
@@AKSBSU Agreed!
How Alita broke a table with Zapan's face was a pure Wing Chun technique: the parry/pull/attack sequence, and a lot of Wing Chun can be seen in her "mirror punch" training sequence too.
i love the giant eyes...they were so beautiful
@Pluralizes Everythings
I think it is pretty but even in her more mature form I didn't feel attracted to her.
Even in the manga Alita is more like a daugther you want to cheer for, support and protect (yeah protect, tho I won't spoil why). ;)

I have read the original story so I know that Kishiro wanted her to have this doll like features.
@J G
You can't say if something is for me or not.

Watching the Manga/Anime to Movie comparison is awesome. They shot for shot so many great scenes.
This movie is how to correctly empowers women. Shows how she earn our respect and want more of her.

André Fernandes ever heard of avengers endgame? the movie that beat avatar?
They call it performance capture as she is acting right along side the other actors and her entire performance is captured, her body's physical movement and her facial emoting in every scene. It goes far beyond just motion capture.
@@jineshshetty1052 You do know what an opinion is, right? Everyone's entitled to one, no one's forced to think Endgame is the best thing ever just cause of box office sales. You really can't compare Endgame with all the hype it built up over years, to another movie that's hardly known to most audiences and that the "critics" didn't liked...
Jinesh Shetty here we go, another marvel fanboys without proper brain
Jinesh Shetty I love marvel but endgame was not the best movie of 2019. Literally 30 min of action, mostly drama. Infinity war was 10 times better. Alita for the win!
I saw it 10 times in theaters. Wish more had seen it, it was absolutely incredible in 3D. Alita was 100% believable.
Just a few things:
@@Juice-chan and whole legion of artists, of course.
James Cameron and his peeps said that the work done with Alita has set the stage for the work they are doing in the next Avatar's motion capture.
@@Neocoolzero that would be pretty funny considering one of the reasons Cameron made Avatar was to push CGI/MoCap technology forward because back then he felt it wasn't good enough to make the Alita movie he had envisioned.
@@camil3545 It is true, it's on the extras on Alita dvd/blu ray.
This is the first time I see people react to something while they show interest, don't break down the movie on every little detail, don't try to be super funny all the time and just genuinely show appreciation for the movie. These kind of reactions are really fun to watch!
these guys are the best. They’re naturally funny too
Rosa Salazar, played Alita.

This is my 3rd time seeing this movie (twice in theaters) and I still feel genuine excitement watching it. Thanks for the reaction fellas

Highly recommended. I've watched it 2x in IMAX 3D, once in 2D theater, then about 3 more times on 4K Blu-ray Dolby Vision at home. I was a little worried in the beginning they were going to get to fixated on the eyes thing, but they got over that fast as most do.
I went and saw it twice. If you don't support nerd culture movies, they will stop making them.
What does nerd culture mean?
laramiaizz it means stuff that’s niche and not well known about and people complain about it because they don’t understand it and want to change it for the same reason
It is manga adaptation. Not a nerd movie

I saw this movie in the theaters 4 times, some things didn't work as well in this adaptation and that I would have prefered to see, but I loved it
"This is where I used to live."
"And is where you're going to die"
Gives me chills every time. ;)
I Love this movie this movie was beautiful and her eyes were astounding
The guy was saying how he was going to wear her like a pendant but keep her alive so he can hear her beg him for mercy every day. So she attacked him and said: "F--- your mercy!" And Hugo is dead, he dies in the manga/OVA, almost exactly like that, so yes he's dead. The Iron City was really built, it even has running water...
Much like your panel, I really enjoyed much more than I expected too. My only hope is international box office gets the follow up made.
I loved your reaction guys and also love the movie, keep it up! 🍊🍫❤
Hey Blindwave crew, there's still a chance for a sequel. The Blu-ray and DVD sales will definitely help. Join the #AlitaArmy!
the cowboy with the Android dogs is Jeff Fahey. he played the lawnmower man back in the day.
For more insight on the movie itself you actually have to watch the bonus material it explains a whole lot. AND
I think you guys would love the anime.
It really was amazing in the theatre.
Definitely worth seeing in the theaters. I watched it 6 times in theaters,
Please Blind Wave watch the new Amazon series, The Boys!
They announced that they will be starting the boys because of a surprise poll they did during wavecon
CarlosAlfonso Tacardon Thanks for letting me know :)
The Boys is great, but it's viewers like YOU who are the real heroes.
They already did episode 1.
@@HellJumper99 I know :) It was great :P
I literally watched this last night

"The actions great but the dialogue is clunky"
You mean like, anime?
@@ViktorTheMusician Not all anime is like that.
@@AirPokemonNaruto22 I'm not saying it's a bad thing lol just that it's a byproduct of dubbing a different language.
@@ViktorTheMusician In terms of dubbing, the movie is based on the manga I believe, not the anime (OVA). I could be wrong, but that's what I've heard.
Its a mocap, I worked on this film.
That acrobatic handstand at 17:34 is actually motion capture, a real woman does that exact stunt in real life.
I want a sequel, too. I loved it so much I saw it nine times in theatres.
Nova is how Rick would turn out without Morty to ground him.
The whole thing is mo-capt, but not only that her face is completely tracked as well, all that emotion in Alita is Rosa
