      Both KFP and HTTYD trilogies are fantastic thru and thru. The main KFP show was not the best, they have made a couple netflix shorter shows recently that are solid. The first two seasons of the HTTYD show were aired on TV and are ok, but then they moved to netflix for 6 seasons and that show is very very good.

      It's a nice parallel to Po asking Shifu how he'll turn him into the Dragon Warrior. Shifu trained Tai Lung and the other 5 differently than he did with Po where he first had to understand him in order to train him to his best potential.

    • @SilverWolf442
      @SilverWolf442 Рік тому +198

      It can tug more if you see it the way I have come to see it after many rewatches.
      I love character analysis, so this is lengthy. Skip for anyone not that invested. Lmao
      At first I think we all interpret it the same way. But something that made me think of it another way was his "Tell me how proud you are" which almost came off somewhat like mocking irony.
      In a way, Tai Lung may have felt Shifu was fair-weather. He built him up all his life to be the DW and heaped praise on to him constantly. But when they go to face Oogway, the latter denies him being worth it and all Shifu's praise meant nothing when he didn't defend his son's honor or character by speaking on hi s behalf.
      So that line may have been Tai Lung accusing Shifu of using him. "Everything I did was for the sake of your pride." So he can have the glory of training the DW. A guilt of some parents that they try & groom their children for a life they weren't successful in achieving for themselves. And as a result, they inadvertently push their child's dreams & life into the background while they live vicariously through them.
      When Tai failed at the ONE thing he was raised for and Shifu stayed quiet, it (in Tai's mind) proved that Shifu only ever had conditional love for him. He wasn't raised to have anything else to fall back on. And his own true parents abandoned him. So Shifu not speaking up was like a 3rd parent abandoning him.
      It seems Tai has an Inferiority Superiority Complex. He has great pride and arrogance in his skill, but not himself - to know that he is still great without the scroll & being the DW. Look at this line when he sees his reflection in the scroll. "It's nothing" - and deep down, that may be how he sees himself when all of his parents, and his grand-master had forsaken him. He's nothing & needs that DW validation & ultimate power to prove that he's worth something.
      A fact pointed out by another fan years ago. Tai Lung didn't grow up wrong. He was raised wrong.
      Then in the end, he ws kept alive in an abusive prison to be used as a test for Po with his father figure finding peace in his death. He truly got a raw deal by Oogway & The Universe.

      It’s a great juxtaposition that Tai Lung sees himself and sees worthlessness, and Po sees himself and sees value.

    • @jonreese7066
      @jonreese7066 Рік тому +36

      @@Sombriagethinking about the parallel, Shifu was probably afraid too. In Tai Lung he found a child with great inate Talent to be the Dragon Warrior and he had years to work with Tai Lung only to fail.
      Now he is expected to train someone he sees as no talent, no experience, and he gets a few days maybe a few weeks to do it.

    • @Sombriage
      @Sombriage Рік тому +32

      @@jonreese7066 True. Shifu had to admit he didn't know how to train Po to be the Dragon Warrior while with Tai Lung he trained him with idea of becoming worthy to be the Dragon Warrior - introducing that obsession.
      A lot of the movie is about control and letting it go so that destiny can unravel by itself without forceful hands trying to pull it apart by themselves.

What Po gets instead in his journey was humility, he was humbled again and again, but it's what actually made him worthy. It's not completely apparent why just from the films, but is still one of my favourite things, Mantis and Viper are allot nicer to Poe because they know what it is like to have people think less of them based on physical attributes. Mantis, as he hints towards, because of his size, and Viper (I believe this is only mentioned in a random series episode or short or something) was born without fangs, her father was actually famous for his "Deadly-Fang Style" which she wasn't able to use, so she developed her own style based on ribbon dancing, gave me a little chuckle when Eric mentioned biting and poisoning Tai-Lung.

    This movie has so many great moments and messages, but my favorite has to be the "I'm not Hungry" line, it has a few layers to it. Po eats when he's upset and he's gone past that, he may not even be hungry, but the biggest thing is that the dumpling was all a test of what he's learned, and "when you're done training you may eat" saying he's not hungry shows he still wants to learn and grow "when the student is ready, the teacher appears". And if you close yourself off in one mindset you'll never truly grow and learn from other sources and others, whether in kung fu, cooking, or any other examples in life

    1. Hes REALLY tough. He can take a LOT of punishment and get back up.

    I have finally realized what the conversation about 'control' is about; Teaching.
    "I cannot make it blossom when it suits me, or make it bear fruit before its time." Oogway is talking about how you can't make someone learn at your pace, only their own.
    "I can control when the fruit will fall. And I can control where to plant the seed!" Shifu counters by saying he decides when and how his students learn. And while he is mostly right, one peach (Po) disobeys and falls on his head.
    "But no matter what you do, that seed will grow to be a peach tree. You may wish for an apple or an orange, but you will get a peach." And Oogway ends by telling Shifu that people don't change at their core. Tai-Lung was always going to have darkness in him, even if Shifu unknowingly cultivated it, and Po was always going to have a kind heart.

    Never seen video about it, but i really think that the most sad thing in this film it's Tai-Lung's tragedy:
    Just think about it. He was trained his whole life in some kind of martial arts cult (think of it again: kung-fu masters are demigods here and unbreakable authorities, especially Ugwei who is someone like a prophet), Shi-Fu gave him nothing except his fighting skills and determination to be a best for his father (for ego as well, but mostly for Shi-Fu). And what happened after tens of years of bloody trainings with no excuses? Crazy old turtle saw something bad in his heart (actually, what? Rage? Aggression? Pride? Ambition? Never told about it. And I don't believe that Tai-Lung wouldn't try to achieve some sort of inner piece if he was told to reach that goal to eradicate that darkness from his heart and become a true Dragon Warrior. Actually, I think that the first thing masters should tell their students) and destroy his whole life like nothing.
    I believe that Tai-Lung could handle it, but only with support from his father - the only one and the most important person in his whole life. But Shi-Fu betray him as well and the whole world around Tai-Lung was okay with that shit.
    P.S. The whole fight beetwen Tai-Lung and Po was complietly screwed up. As we see in this movie and in the sequel as well, Po didn't reach his limits and in some cases was weaker then Tigress or Shi-Fu. At the same time, Tai-Lung is an ultimate war-machine, who can be stopped only by Ugwei.

      After Tai finally opened the scroll, the writers immediately killed his character. He was then written like a stereotypical villain manchild "boohoo I can't have what I want so I'm gonna throw a tantrum".
      In a perfect world, Tai Lung would be stunned and talk a lot about his dreams being crushed, his plans after this, and THEN he can fight Po as a final stand to test if there really is a dragon warrior.

    56:30 Something I liked about Po's fights with Tai Lung and Matter Shifu was the bowl shuffling scene and how both Po and Tai Lung interacted with it. Po played within the constraints of the game. He could have knocked all the bowls over, but he didn't. He picked one at random, and got it right. Tai Lung, on the other hand, didn't even *try* to fight "fairly" when Po started the wok shuffle-his immediate response was violent and angry.
    That is why Po is the Dragon Warrior, and Tai Lung is not. It's not so much a need for "Peace" or "Calm", but for comfort in who you are. Tai Lung would never have accepted that "just me" was "good enough".
    He *_needed_* the Dragon Warrior title to come with secret techniques, powerful skills, and abilities without compare, because he needed to be perfect-he needed to be *more.*
    Po is Po. He's happy with himself. He's not always perfect, and he's okay with that.
    Also, wacky character defeats strong battle-hardened warrior with cartoon logic-did I just describe Po, or Luffy?

Po used it not only to make a fool out of Tai Lung but also, making Tai Lung trying to take it from Po, tired him out enough to beat him. Also, Po being fat was seen by everyone as a weakness, but is what prevented him from being affected by Tai Lung's nerve attack.

    What I love about the bridge fight is it shows the Five are a force to be reckoned with. Instead of these life-long martial artists being overshadowed buy one guy with a week's training, they get their moment to shine and show us just how strong they really are. I also love that even with all the training, it was Po's father's "There is no secret ingredient" which pushed him that final step.

      It is very wishi washi and in any case it would still be less time but the movie gives no indication of how much time it took for Po to train. It could have 1 week, I could have been 3 months

    There are so many points of great praise in this movie, but one that I particularly like is how perfectly modelled the characters are to real life kung fu forms. Each member of the five is an animal directly corresponding with a particular style of king fu, with Po using the rarest 6th style known as dragon style. Tai lung’s fighting is the same ‘tiger-style’ identical to tigress, but with far greater ferocity and tactical environmental use. Shifu uses a mix of all 6 styles throughout as he is the teacher, and Oogway just uses super advanced chi techniques which are beyond any style, showing just how removed he is in power from the others at this point. Really shows how much research and thought went into the film and it paid off.

    6:02 "What kind of animal is he?" Glad you asked! Master Shifu is a red panda, which like a Giant Panda like Po, eats bamboo, somewhat resembles a raccoon, and lives in China. Its red and white coloration is for camouflage. And by the way, Shifu means "master/teacher" in Chinese, so his name and title are both "Master." And Oogway translates to turtle in Chinese. I loved how Oogway's mannerisms are always contrasted with Shifu's to show how Oogway is calm and patient, while Shifu is brash and impatient. Oogway reasons that if something is inevitable, it's better to prepare for it rather than try to avoid it; Shifu reacts out of fear and tries to stop bad things from happening (or just things he doesn't like, lol) but takes shortcuts in doing so.

    FYI: Turtle or Tortoise is actually consider a martial animal. The tortoise entwine with a snake is call the Xuan Wu. Is basically one of the 4 major mystical creature and also the animal companion of a martial god most associated with Wudang. The snake is speed, agility and offence while the Tortoise is slow, immovable pure perfect defense. Together they represent the yin and yang.

    Tai Lung is one of my favorite animated villains ever. I really enjoy the villains whose motivations you can understand and even relate to. He was the “bad guy,” but it’s not entirely his fault. His entire life he was trained to be the best and taught to think that it was his destiny to become the Dragon Warrior. Shifu practically groomed him for the role. He put him through hellish training, all of which Tai Lung endured because that’s what he was supposed to do. All he wanted was to make the man he viewed as his father proud. Even Shifu thought Tai Lung was gonna be the Dragon Warrior. All that changed when Oogway denied him that. Oogway obviously saw the dark streak inside him and knew he was unfit. But Tai Lung at that point didn’t understand, how would you expect someone to react to being THIS close to achieving something they’ve worked their entire life for, just for someone to come in at the last second and say they’ll never be good enough for it? Obviously he wasn’t gonna just accept it and move on, at that point they pretty much told him that his entire life and everything he worked for was for nothing. He was angry and bitter, understandably so. He’s not cartoonishly evil and that’s what I love about him. The whole “Fallen Chosen One/Star Pupil” schtick he has really reminds me of Anakin Skywalker in a way.

    It's so cool after watching KFP 2 and 3 - knowing Oogway knew about the hidden panda village and Kai's potential return - that the moment Po fell from the sky, Oogway knew Po was to be trained, and thus selected him as the Dragon Warrior
