Cold start, Moki 257, 250cc 7-cylinder radial gas engine
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 чер 2023
- The video demonstrates a safe method for hand starting a large gas engine.
We are beginning to check out the systems of our FG-1D Corsair, Skyboss. The plane is approximately 1/4 scale, weighs 74.5 lbs. “wet,“ ready to fly. Her markings are based on the real Skyboss. Extensive research and attention to details make this FG-1D Corsair one of a kind.
The plane has a Jeti radio system including a Central Box 400, two CB100 signal and power distribution modules, and four receivers with 24 channels to control all her systems. The plane has 33 servos and actuators, and is powered by four 5200 lithium ion batteries.
She was painted with Klasskote paint. The Yosemite Sam nose art decal was done by Callie Graphics. - Спорт

No $hit…..😢
It's still fun to watch, I want a 185 Cessna very badly
It’s amazing how much this engine sounds like a full-size radial. Especially when it first fires up and idles.
Nothing like a loping radial...of any size... Since the engine is a REAL radial 4 stroke....it does sound and feel like the real thing...now if only I can make it smoke at startup!!! Thanks very much for your comment..
@@RTD1947 That characteristic cam lope , ,
along with the open exhaust pipes ,
is what makes radial engines sound so Great .
I like to see it fly
@@flights47 density altitude has been too high to get 74 pounds off in 450 feet... but soon!!!
Absolutely love this
A dear old friend of mine almost fifty years ago, a pilot in the Marines who flew the F4U in the pacific during the war, taught me to fly in his 140-tail dragger. It would be off to Oshkosh for the show..."Kevin, just keep the wings level with the horizon and wake me up when we're getting close", 😳 while he lit up his pipe, over a shirt that had a few burnt holes in it from his pipe, then drifted off into a nap. 😴What wonderful and unforgettable memories! He was also certified to rebuild that little engine on the 140, not much he couldn't do, he taught me so much!
Your FG-1D brought back those fond memories of us flying together for hours on end, thank you Rick!
You are very welcome...It's the "Journey...not the Destination" ... those that understand Aviation realize why flying is so special....I have fond memories also... my Best....OH...a thought...go to the main channel...there is a 40% scale Carbon Cub walk around and flight you might enjoy...
Excellent demonstration. Beautiful Corsair! Nothing sounds like a Moki engine. 👍
Thank you for your comment...it's appreciated The cool sound comes from the Tripipes at 5:20. When you remove them...the engine sounds like a soft 250-5. Thank you for your comments...I wish I had included some cutaways of the cockpit...it's exact in every detail to the real Skyboss...even has a transponder. The real Skyboss was a show girl...so quite a bit was updated for the FAA to be able to fly in airshows...but other than that...You would see just a small real corsair...Note the stall strip on the Starboard wing...
That engine rumbling sound gives me goosebumps :) I would love to have a motorcycle with a engine like that just for the sound lol ;)
Well, I must admit it is habit forming...It lives...it breathes ... nothing like the sound of a radial knowing what is making that beautiful Music....thanks for your comment..
Moki radials are a beautiful thing.
And they run very well if taken care of...and they do need periodic maintenance especially the tappets. That distance is critical to an engine performing well...when they do light off the sound and feel of the engine running...is pretty cool......but note...this is a Radial...with hundreds of moving parts inside....it's NOT your average model airplane engine........thanks for your comments
that unique 7 cylinder sound.honestly sounds better than 8.
thanks so much...If you like the sound of the 7, you need to check out the 5 on the Nieuport 24bis on the main channel...look for the Maiden Flight of the Nieuport 24bis for a new sound from basically the same engine...
Funny thing, the original bird had 28 cylinders, this one has 7... so it's still quarter scale! :)
And the sound is very *realistic*...
well pretty close....the R-2800 is a double row of 9 cylinders...total 18......so not quite 1/4 the scale of the engine.....but nice thought.....
Nothing better to me than the sound of the Pratt-Whitney R-1340 9-cylinder radial on the AT-6 Texans we fly every once-in a- while, what a blast! Your parachute is your seat cushion. That 7 cyl sure is sweet though!
Geeez. When I was a kid I had a gas-powered model plane. It was a bear to get started, flew on the end of a string, would only go up and down, and I had to make myself dizzy to fly it. 😂
You have to be a little "Dizzy" to fly one of these...
Utterly gorgeous! The sound of that radial is so sweet!
as close as you can get to a small Harley....Yes, something special about the sound and feel of a loping radial...thanks for your comment....take a listen to the Maiden flight of the Nieuport 24bis on this channel...that is a standard 250 through long diverter pipes....
Love that sound of the engine ,wow what a beautiful plane ,👍
Paul...thanks so much...my aim in building her was to make a Small REAL, Corsair, so people could see what one looked like up close... to that end Skyboss is as close as it gets...I was fortunate to have the cooperation of Jeff Clyman the owner supply me with details not readily available that I might ask for....terrific guy. again thanks for your comment....
I’d love to see this in person, just to be in the presence of such an amazing piece of history and pure power would make my day!!
That remote is amazing, I’ve never seen anything as realistic as this before! Wow!
Thanks you...technology has come a long way in the 60 years I have been flying RC.....thanks for your comment
What a great looking and sounding Corsair.
A labor of Love....and great entertainment for over 10 years...
Nothing beats the sound of a Moki!! Awesome sir!
Thanks you for the comment...the exhaust is being funneled through two stainless ( Tri Pipes ) that really mellows the sound. But you are right...Nothing beats a loping Radial....of any size....take a listen to the Maiden flight of the Nieuport 24bis on this channel...that is a standard 250 exhausting through long diverter pipes....
As soon as you said Skyboss I realized I've had a picture of it in flight on my wall for the last 25 years. It looks like it has a passenger seat.
And mine does also....actually they discontinued taking passengers and (to the best they could) Covered over the hole in the skin and took out the seat behind the cockpit....NICE CATCH!!!...
I just love the sound of those Moki engines...that low rumble is pure music! Wonderful airplane and a real stunning presence indeed!!!
Thanks so much for the comment....the exhaust note of this Moki is due to the scale ( Tri pipes) 5:20 ... the 257 has a mellow sound without them...and different from the standard 250-5. Skyboss is about as scale as it gets. Our aim was to create a Small "Skyboss", and not just a model that looked like a Corsair...
The sweet sounds coming from the exhaust pipes at idle gives me goosebumps. It's a truly stunning model.
Man, that is just music to the ears. Beautiful Corsair. Well done.
Thank you...she looks like the real thing...just smaller...I wanted people to see up close what you can't see at an Airshow...so even the cockpit is tailored to the real Skyboss....thanks for your comment....
LOVE that sound! Like an old V8 with a cam : :}
I have no idea what an old V8 with a cam sounds like....BUT...if is anything like a Real R-2800 starting....You are in heaven...
Amazing great sound of the engine congrats!!
I love these little radials, they sound amazing and are beautiful to look at. would love one just on an engine stand to play with. A plane is just an extra bonus
Your thoughts are mine also...the engines are amazing...complicated...engineered...and I had the opportunity to look inside one recently...and you would not believe the ignition that lives inside the engine...thanks for your comment..................................
@@RTD1947 Moki is one of the best at it.
Sounds truly authentic, fabulous sound.
thanks for the comment...the Tripipes make all the difference in the sound of just a stock engine....
Another first class set up Rick! Amazing job as always.👏👏👏
Helluva bird.
Before my vision grounded me, I flew a Byron Corsair with a Quadra 50 in the ‘90s. It was a great flyer, but things have come an awfully long way since then.
Yes they have, think about the advances in Ducted fans of that era and todays turbines...certainly not to mention the radios....thanks for your comment
Do you still have it?
Yes I do...we are waiting for clearance from the USAF to use one of their AUX fields for the Maiden....@@user-io8pb6xm9q
@@user-io8pb6xm9q
Yep. Still have it. It hasn’t flown in years, so the carburetor is probably gummed up, but it should be otherwise airworthy.
@@danl.909 you should fire it up and let someone you care about fly it
That is truly awesome! I half expected a scale pilot to walk out in his flight gear and climb aboard- great work
Walking pilots are pretty expensive...and this one Drinks a lot!!! so we will just keep him in the cockpit....
I've heard big radials run. The sound is unmistakably unique. I love what you've recreated.
The only thing yet to come is the smoke on startup...we are working on that for the 1/5 scale B-25 later this year with twin 250 autostarts....so stay turned....and thanks for your comment
That is real nice man man! 🤜♥️ I just love the sound of radial engines so unique. Very beautiful model 🙏
Thanks so much...means a lot to get a comment like this....Check out the Nieuport 24bis Maiden flight...that is a 5 cylinder Moki...but the sound is captivating in flight...
@@RTD1947 it's absolutely beautiful my brother I love RC planes especially replica's such as that. And that engine just sounds so nice I really appreciate you taking the time to explain how it all works! You should make more videos such as this! Got any other planes or anything would love to see them too! What a fantastic hobby it saved my life 💯♥️
Most amazing thing I’ve seen all day..
I can see why those engines are 2k. Work of art
Right at $5000 to be painfully exact...but they are a work of art and hundreds of pieces all working together to make Music...I guess it's worth it.....the 257 is just a little more because of the extra two cylinders...and then Prop at 500 and pump at 350....yes.....never stops.... fuel it is running is about $20 a gallon with oil...but they don't like ethanol...and love 95 octane blended fuel...and really good oil.....
Extremely bad ass engine. LOVE the idle sound! Also kove the transmitter and the plane itself! Excellent presentation too!
Thanks so much...glad you enjoyed the video...I think sharing is an important part of the Hobby....if you like the sound of the 7 cylinder the Nieuport Maiden flight on this channel will......well....let me know......it's the Moki 5 cylinder.
Beautifull corsair one of my favorites!
I also have the Moki 257. Best running of the Moki's! Installed in the M35.
That was nice, glad to see teaching Rick after all these years! Use you broadcast voice next time. Say hello to Cathy, Shandra and Jo Jo for me.
I have three Moki engines and my 257 is the best running model.
I tend to agree with you. In the 5 catagory...I like my Valach 250 the most. Just to mention...I run EGT telemetry on all cylinders on all my Radials...Preflight...knowing all are Hot is critical to a good engine run...You would be surprised how many times I have found one or more cold cylinders, and just needed to be warmed up a little longer to come on line...the 5's especially...thanks for your comment..
Imagine being 3 years old and riding in it
Not that it makes me sleepy. But I could listen to that all day and even fall asleep to that baby when she's at idle.
Better than the ocean!
Beautiful model… with a lovely sound especially the tick over…I remember making Airfix and Revel models as a kid and the Corsair along with the Mustang and Spitfire were my favourites, sadly radio control was too expensive for me in UK 1960’s so I had to play around with Control line and free flight models, I also dabbled with Jetex motors which used a small solid fuel cartridge ignited by fuse wire. Great video and thanks for sharing
thanks for your comment....I remember those days too....It was expensive in the US in the 60's also plus very primitive compared to today...I do some explaining about the radio and what I listen to while flying in the Carbon Cub video on the channel...
I could sit and watch that all day, my neighbours would hate me, I’d have this thing chuffing and burbling on a Sunday morning at 9am on the front lawn 😂
She is a small Harley...and your neighbors would love the sound...something about a loping big radial that makes you feel Alive....thanks for your comment and sensitivity....
@@RTD1947 please do post up some videos of the taxi tests and of course the maiden, I wish you calm nerves and a great first flight, it’s always nerve racking but you wouldn’t build a model like that if you were not a master on the sticks, but I wish you luck on the first time that gorgeous gal leaves the tarmac 👍👌
That is one beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing it with us.
You're very welcome....nothing like a loping radial on a Saturday morning to make the day bright...! That was a sweet build. Love the sound of this one!
On the main channel...the Maiden Flight of the Nieuport may be of interest....
What a beautiful thing, it’s my dream to own a large scale warbird with a moki 250, beautiful details and such a lovely example of a well thought out model
thank you so much for the comment...She is a Labor of Love over 10 years...but...that is what the hobby is all about. When we take her out for her taxi texts I will do some close ups of the Cockpit and the rivet and hatch details...my aim was to make her the real deal....only smaller...
A brief flight through the trees would be awesome!
That moki sound just didn't get old! Nicely done.
Nothing like a lopping radial in the morning to start the day off right!!...thanks for the comment.......
Nothing like the sound of a radial engine.
Yes, as cool as the sound and smell of a Turbine.....the advancements in the hobby have been incredible since I started over 50 years ago...been a cool ride.....thanks for your comment..

Me, too. At 71, I built a load of control line wings and later RC planes.
But a Cox Thimble Drome engine is no where near these new boxer and radial engines. Just beautiful engineering and, the sound.

Amazing airplane. Totally get why you start it up the way you do, no drama, no high rpms, no struggling, no smoke, straight in at idle running smooth. Love the sound out of it.
and no jumping back when she lights...or having to chase down your glove to fine your fingers if you are too slow!!! Thanks so much for your comment...the sound is due in part to the stainless (tri pipes) scale to the real bird by the way...there is a quick shot of them in the video.......
The starting procedure was absolutely great !! The engine started more like the original radials which do not jump into speed all of a sudden. I ran the video at 4:57 half the speed. This is impressive. With some smoke at the exhaust the imagination would be perfect. Like to see it flying.
My only regret is it doesn't smoke at startup...BUT!!! I'm working on that!!! Thank you for your comment and Love of Round engines...

The Corsair is my favorite also...over the 10+years Skyboss and I have been together, the experience has been worth every mile....Good Luck with Yours...whatever the scale......The build is 90% of the experience...Did you realize your comment was #600? ... You are in good company.....
Absolutely beautiful
I should head out to the RC park this Saturday to see big boys like this beauty.
Beautiful aircraft. That engine sounds really good.
thank you for the comment...it's all due to the scale (Tripipes) 5:20 into the video...without them the sound is pretty soft compared to a standard 250....the smoothness is due to the Fuel it is burning, tappets correct, The pump supplying a constant pressure and prop...I just pulled the plugs and replaced with new ones for the maiden flight...the old plugs looked brand new...getting the mixture lean enough but not too lean is important (both ends)...got lucky!
Look forward to the maiden, I watch this video to keep stoked on building mine👍
Well, the maiden will be soon....keep watching...there is so much to learn and if you have any questions feel free to ask...
I would love to see the exhaust work underneath! She sounds great! Hard to beat.
thanks so much...I wish I could say I designed them...but they were made for me and work extreamly well with very little back pressure...the only shot is a 5:22
Отличный звук и самолет красивый!

before my eyes, it changed to a Small Corsair...and not a model airplane....thanks for your comment....
I saw one with an onboard starter motor, love how they have the sound of the real plane.
That was the 250-5 and they are great engines to have...the starter only adds about 10% to the cost...the 257's cylinder arrangment makes it impossible to have one...also...as with the full size radial...Hydrolock is common so just like the full scale you must pull the prop through several times before you hit the button to start...if you like the sound check out the Maiden Flight of the Nieuport24bis.......
That's a beautiful machine, sir!
Thank you...Skyboss has been a labor of love for over 10 years and continues to give hours of pleasure even though she is ready to fly ... this hobby is a great source of entertainment and fulfillment ... just need to work at it, and not get sucked into "Fast and Easy"...there is no future in that....... thanks for your complement
Explanation of the 33 servos would be cool I thought up about 23 would love to know where the other 10 live , maybe a full system breakdown video
Let me see...there was a comment some days ago about the same thought....BRB ..this was about 11 days ago...and my thoughtful answer to the same question...Well...lets see...there are Servos and Linear Actuators that are treated just like servos...so let me take just the wing... (4) flap, (2) Aileron, (2) oil cooler, (1) inner cooler, (2) wing actuators, (2) wing hinge door, (2) gear actuators, (4) gear door servos.......that's the wing... (19) ... Let's see Fuselage ... (1) rudder, (1) steering, (2) elevators, (1) tailwheel actuator, (2) gear door, (1) tail hook, (1) canopy actuator, (2) cowl flap, (1) throttle, (1) choke, (1) fuel pump, (14) ... I didn't count things like ignition or lights ... but that is pretty close and all are programmed with the DC24. did I miss something? If you have further questions feel free to ask.
