Rick's RC Model Airplane Videos
I have been flying model airplanes for most of my life, starting with control-line in the late 1950's. Through the years I have flown fun-fly, pattern and mid-sized scale models. I'm interested in flying giant scale, and have recently started flying large gasoline engines. I currently fly with a Jeti DC24 radio.

Cold start, Moki 257, 250cc 7-cylinder radial gas engine
The video demonstrates a safe method for hand starting a large gas engine.
We are beginning to check out the systems of our FG-1D Corsair, Skyboss. The plane is approximately 1/4 scale, weighs 74.5 lbs. “wet,“ ready to fly. Her markings are based on the real Skyboss. Extensive research and attention to details make this FG-1D Corsair one of a kind.
The plane has a Jeti radio system including a Central Box 400, two CB100 signal and power distribution modules, and four receivers with 24 channels to control all her systems. The plane has 33 servos and actuators, and is powered by four 5200 lithium ion batteries.
She was painted with Klasskote paint. The Yosemite Sam nose art decal was done by Callie Graphics.

would you expand on the pump, what kind or brand it is and where is it placed
The Pump is a Fuel not Smoke pump...pressures are different...Google (APS Powerfuel RX)..CH-Ignitions and Vogelsang Aeroscale sell them... The pump is placed between the tank and the engine and the return pressure is fed back into the tank via a third hole...NOTE! on Moki and Valach...the suction pump on both engines must be blocked to use an external positive pressure fuel pump... Please feel free to respond if you need further help...
@@RTD1947 Spec says pump is not suitable for use in menthanol fuels, so i'm assuming you are using gas and ignition.
@ Yes, Gas with NO Ethanol! 35/1 Redline racing oil.
why no 4 blade props?
Hi there...good question...this is a scale model of a FG-1D corsair...they didn't graduate to a 4 blade until the F4U-4 Years later.... thanks for your comment...
Whoa, nice save...😮 You think gyroscopic progression caused the veer to the left?
There are 4 forces acting on the plane at takeoff...Procession is only one. " P " factor is another ... Torque is another ... Spiraling slipstream is the last... They all affect the plane at different AOA and speeds...so it is a real balancing act when you fly something like this with a 250cc and a 34" prop...very much like the real deal, only you are not sitting in the plane to feel what it's doing...You only have seconds to figure it out with a model....Just flew the plane last week and .... getting much better at catching it.........thanks for your comment...
It sounds real life like 👍 I am jealous 😊
Thanks for your comment...when you are close to it running, the rumble, which the video doesn't convey, is very visceral...
The plane is nice, I had a toy model when I was a kid. Is your transmitter the Siri version or Alexa version 🤔 😳?
It's the Owners Version....the transmitter is completely agile and just beeps out of the box...a fantastic system and very customizable. Thanks for your comment....
I love that plane and engine sound😊👍👌. I also want to tell that I do the same start procedure on my rc 30cc gas boat. I dont have a fuel pump but it is the same principal. I first pump in fuel to the carburator by the rubber bulb on the carburator to get fuel in the system, then choke the engine by put my finger on the air intake on the carburator and slowly pull the starting string a couple of times to get fuel in the engine and until the fuel ignites in the engine like your plane does. After that, I remove the finger from the carburator to stop the choke and pull normal the starting string and after about 2-3 times the engine starts. Works great 😀. Thank you for showing us your beautiful plane and how you do to start your engine.
The sound... ❤
Thanks so much...of course everything is in the exhaust and engine tuning...5:20 into the video you see the active exhaust (diverters?) also the extra two cylinders help mellow the Note ... without them the engine sounds like a soft 250-5. Thanks for your comment!
That takeoff was a little dicey! Prop was a bit close to turf on landing. But it’s all good 😌.
Yes...would not want a prop strike...that's not a "off the shelf" item and roughly $600...just to make you heart beat on landing...thanks for your comment. But it is scale in size and shape...and really that is all that matters...
All systems go. That gun muzzle looks a bit intimidating even though safe. What’s the flight time with full tank?
Sorry for not getting back to you....the airplane carries 1 liter...that 250cc will consume it in 20 min...flying at the throttle setting I was using...thanks for your comment...sorry for not replying sooner..
Very impressive..
Thanks for your comment...
I’m too poor to fly it. Great engine sound.!!
No you're Not!! LOL ... Aviation is just like boating...ish! It's a hole in the sky you pour money into...thanks for your comment...the sound is due to the Scale tripipes ... 5:20 in....otherwise it sounds like a soft 250-5...
Very beautiful plane, 🎉🇺🇸
thanks for your comment....She is a Labor of the LOVE of AVIATION...We took special attention of details to heart...note the stall strip just outboard of the gun ports on the starboard wing... all the hinges are covered and even vent holes in the bottom of the plywood covered ailerons.....just to point a few... was lots of fun....over 10 years...our aim was to make a (small Corsair) not just something that looked like one 10 feet away...
Fifty-three pounds? She sounds extraordinarily heavy to me. I'd imagine a model like that would tip the scales at no more than twenty. Where did all her mass come from? Sorry, I'm being impertinent in questioning your lady's vital statistics.😲 That's terribly bad form! Before you ask, I'm 5' 6" and 9½ stone. And nowhere near as good-looking as your beautiful model. Happy landings, dear boy.😁
Feel free to ask...it's hard to imagine how the weight can sneak up on you when you get into 1/3 scale models.( lots of wood and not all balsa)....for starters...the engine weighs 14 lbs...or 1 Stone! and to make a WW1 plane balance there are 5 lbs of lead in the nose.....the wheels alone weigh 2 1/2 pounds each.....the axel the run on 1 1/2 pounds ... so all up? About 4 Stones!!!! thanks for your comment...very much appreciated...
That is impressive. We want to see her in flight.
Thank you for your comment...flight later this fall...Flight is like sex in a marriage...it's what in-between that really matters. The Beauty of Skyboss is on the ground...in the air she is just another Blue Airplane....But...to be an airplane it must fly....at least that is the common belief....so if conditions are right we will see if she can lift her 74 pounds and stretch her wings when the weather cools and the air is more dense...in Texas....
Love it
Thanks again...I wish there was a way to show you the details...the cockpit is exactly like the one that flew in NY. The owner Jeff, supplied me with detailed photos of the insides...every inch, and we duplicated it even to the seat cushion pattern and color....our aim in building Skyboss was, to make a "Real small Corsair" so anyone viewing it at the field could actually see what a real one looks like.....not just something that resembled a Corsair from 20 feet away... We came pretty close....I say we because, my Wife designed and printed all the specialty parts that are really difficult to duplicate any other way. The Tamiya kit was invaluable in this effort........ Thanks for commenting...
Is that a kit ,or self made from plans , what length wingspan is this amazing model ?
She started life as a CARF Folding Wing Corsair Kit...All factory details were removed, and refinished using a Tamiya 1/48 transferred and upscaled for the details. The wingspan is 110" and the scale is 1:4.5 ... half way between 1/4 and 1/5th...Weighs 78 pounds...thanks for your comment!

Any update to maiden Rick.
We are holding for the fall when temps on the runway will be suitable for lifting Skyboss. It's called ( density Altitude) and right now...its just too hot and getting hotter to lift something heavy... thanks for keeping us in mind....
Move the camera to the rear of the aircraft so we can see that wings-folding action and truly appreciate it.
LOL...Not a bad idea!! only one problem .... one camera...one cameraman...( Me ) !!! I do wish however I was able to give you closeups of the plane...Cockpit...details on the wings and fuselage...etc... the plane started off as a very basic CARF kit ... all silver...all the factory details were removed and the plane was refinished and detailed to the standards of a Tamiya 1/48th scale F4U-1D, and actual photos of Skyboss supplied by it's owner....so truly one of a kind...Super Scale FG-1D Corsair. My aim in building Skyboss, was to give the viewer at the field a look at a REAL Corsair, just smaller, and not something that kinda looked like one.... thanks for your comments
@@RTD1947 You've got a real nice replica of a Goodyear-produced Corsair there for sure!!
@@jimw1615 Thanks so much...Skyboss has given me hours of enjoyment during the build and research over the last 10 years...kinda took on a life of it's own once I decided I just didn't want to hurry the build to just fly it as so many do. After a few more taxi and high speed runs, we do intend to see if she will fly. But the real beauty is parked on the ramp...in the air it will be just another blue Corsair...and I'm impressed you know the difference between a F4U and a FG-1D...not many people do....😊
@@RTD1947 I'm a former U.S. Marine Corps officer who grew up loving the F-4U in addition to being a WW-II Pacific Theater history buff. But of course, I never flew the Corsair being another "Baby Boomer" and missing WW-II altogether. I have to believe that I would keep it on the ground, showing it off where people can enjoy it close-up. Most scale models are overpowered and don't fly worth a darn at "scaled speeds", anyway.
@@jimw1615 ... Skyboss is all Marine...she is dressed up in VMF-312 livery...no doubt Jeff Clyman ( owner) was Marine.....
Wow that sound, absolutely incredible.
Thanks so much for the observation....at 5:20 you can see why....without them the engine sounds like a soft 250...I think the extra back pressure creates the realistic sound....and smooths out the idle note.............thanks for the comment.
My favorite fighter from ww2 and I love that exhaust note at idle
If you go to 5:20 in the video you see what is causing the note....without the pipes it sounds like a very soft 250...thanks for the comment...
You need some switch controlled red LEDs to mimic machine guns firing
This is a scale model of a Show Bird....Skyboss never had Machine guns as she flew in Airshows....so...nice thought...but................kinda Fufu
7:48 rev up
I see what you are seeing...the engine has a Seidel shock mount holding the engine and there is just a small amount of play with the torque....In other words...the engine is not hard mounted to the firewall...
Love using the drone!!
Well, Hi there ... didn't know your were a model airplane aficionado? The Drone was very cool to fly with and some scenes a little close for comfort...but a very cool perspective......
I love to see what you are doing and after seeing the planes up close, it’s amazing to watch them fly. When I was there in Nov ‘22, you were working on the plane in the house and I recall it had a great story to it. What do you think about doing a little piece about the original plane’s history and how you ended up with it? (I would really appreciate it as I can’t remember enough of it!)
Hi Rick. What pump are you using for the radial engine. Thanks. Beautiful model.
The fuel pump is a ( APS PowerFuel 380 RX and HV...available at CH Ignitions). Note: if you plan to use a pump...the internal Moki suction Pump must be plugged...that clear tube running from the front to the rear needs to be plugged...then everything works perfectly.
@@RTD1947 Thank you so much for the information. I'm looking to buy a 5 cylinder moki 250 for the Carf P47. Will that pump work on the 5 cylinder?
@@Snake-Stuka Yes it will and same thing...block the internal pump first..

Super dall'Italia da Castel beseno Trento
Grazie per il tuo commento...l'aereo è in super scala e il suono è dovuto ai trippipe 5:20. Niente come il suono di un Moki.
Excellent demonstration. Beautiful Corsair! Nothing sounds like a Moki engine. 👍
Thank you for your comment...it's appreciated The cool sound comes from the Tripipes at 5:20. When you remove them...the engine sounds like a soft 250-5. Thank you for your comments...I wish I had included some cutaways of the cockpit...it's exact in every detail to the real Skyboss...even has a transponder. The real Skyboss was a show girl...so quite a bit was updated for the FAA to be able to fly in airshows...but other than that...You would see just a small real corsair...Note the stall strip on the Starboard wing...
That engine rumbling sound gives me goosebumps :) I would love to have a motorcycle with a engine like that just for the sound lol ;)
Well, I must admit it is habit forming...It lives...it breathes ... nothing like the sound of a radial knowing what is making that beautiful Music....thanks for your comment..
God, that engine sounds wonderful when idling. So nice! Is this all custom built by yourself? If so, that is amazing!
The airframe is a BASIC ... CARF kit... all sanded back to a smooth gray canvas then everything was added... I can't take credit for the cockpit which is an exact creation of the real Skyboss cockpit...it was important to get it right ( everyone looks their first ) and I didn't have the skills necessary to do it right...a professional model making company was asked to create it from photos...and measurements off the kit. They did an outstanding job...every switch and knob and labels even the texture of the seat cushion. Thanks for your comment ... the sound is due to the tri pipes 5:20 otherwise the engine sounds like a soft 250-5....thanks for your kind words...
Awesome plane ✈️ one of my favorites 🤙
thanks for your comment....our aim was to make Skyboss a exact small Corsair so people seeing it would see the real thing...only one quarter the size....
Sounds great!
the sound comes from the TriPipes 5:20...without them the engine sounds like a soft 250-5

I just love the sound of those Moki engines...that low rumble is pure music! Wonderful airplane and a real stunning presence indeed!!!
Thanks so much for the comment....the exhaust note of this Moki is due to the scale ( Tri pipes) 5:20 ... the 257 has a mellow sound without them...and different from the standard 250-5. Skyboss is about as scale as it gets. Our aim was to create a Small "Skyboss", and not just a model that looked like a Corsair...
Gorgeous A/C! What scale pilots did you use in the cockpits?
The two pilots are 1/3 scale and custom made...One instructor and one student from Axels Scale pilots in Germany.

That's a beautiful machine, sir!
Thank you...Skyboss has been a labor of love for over 10 years and continues to give hours of pleasure even though she is ready to fly ... this hobby is a great source of entertainment and fulfillment ... just need to work at it, and not get sucked into "Fast and Easy"...there is no future in that....... thanks for your complement
Very Impressive!!!
thanks for your comment....it's appreciated.....If you have any questions...feel free to ask...
Beautiful build, plane and sound! I ‘ld love to know how you lock the wings. In the 80’s we put pressure on the fuel tank taking presssure from the exhaust.
the wings lock via the main jackscrew ( that lifts and lowers the wing) using a over center cylinder at one end...the doors you see are triggered by the cylinder being driven into a locking notch both up and down... as for the fuel pump...that is the only way to go...it supplies a constant pressure to the carb. and any excess pressure is returned to the tank in a constant circulation. Once I turn on the pump, there is constant fuel, at a specific pressure, (.3 bar) being delivered to the carb regardless of RPM. Thanks for your comment and question.
Fabulous
Thank You....the comment is appreciated....
Nice job, much smaller Extra than mine though, mine has 126" Wing Span but still a very nice flight. Great field also.
It sounds realistic , So Cool !?!
it's all due to the scale Tripipes 5:20 ... without them the engine sounds like a soft 250-5 ... thanks for your comment...
Very Cool.

Beautiful aircraft. That engine sounds really good.
thank you for the comment...it's all due to the scale (Tripipes) 5:20 into the video...without them the sound is pretty soft compared to a standard 250....the smoothness is due to the Fuel it is burning, tappets correct, The pump supplying a constant pressure and prop...I just pulled the plugs and replaced with new ones for the maiden flight...the old plugs looked brand new...getting the mixture lean enough but not too lean is important (both ends)...got lucky!
