- This is the PedalPalFX PAL 800 Gold Overdrive Pedal
Over the last 10 years, I've had a chance to test out a lot of "Marshall pedals". I had heard and seen a lot online regarding this pedal but I wanted to hear it for myself. I sent an email out to Pedal Pal FX to see if they would let me do a full review of the PAL 800 overdrive pedal and not long after one was on the way.

Thanks Shane for this amazing review of our PAL 800 GOLD Overdrive, we are very grateful for this opportunity... Keep Rocking man! Cheers! Luis & Alvaro.
But you don't ship internationlly. ONLY United States. Shane's friends in their country can not buy one.
Yeah we Aussies aren't special enough! ;o(
@@fransonlp Here Luis from PedalPalFx, we can ship worldwide, just send us a message in our official webpage www.pedalpalfx.com or in our Shop at Reverb.com... We hope to do business with you, Cheers!
Venezuelan Power! PAL and E3 Pedals (MegaFaidel) are really great options to enhance a pedalboard
I recorded a new little rockin' backing track for this review. What a pedal! I hope you enjoy it. 😀
Serious questions here. Given the political situation in Venezuela, should this pedal be advertised or bought? Do we know who the profits are really going to? Would the company even be able to fulfill the orders for the pedal?
Umm Chavez is LONG gone! ;oP
Hey Shane, what drum software are you using here? The drums sound very realistic.
Cool song for the demo, you could go in the back of your Marshall's effect loop and compare it to the regular Marshall gain section. Pal 800 sounds great going in the loop to power amp I heard.
Shane, the smile that comes to your face the second you turn on the pedal after demonstrating your clean tone says it all…
Wow!! That PAL 800 is a beast!!! Hope you try this pedal out live!!!🎸🎸🎸🤙🏾🤘🏽🤘🏽
Shane said it best, it definitely transformed the tone of the fender amp, very impressive pedal, user friendly, responsive and it delivers on the promise of Marshall tone and power, great review !!
I LOVE my Gold Overdrive!!! If you do buy it, I suggest IMMEDIATELY turning the internal trim/master tone all the way up. That is, if you have humbuckers and you're after that classic, cutting Marshall sound.
After that, this thing is a BEAST! I own a couple of Marshalls but I'm always playing/practicing thru the Gold Overdrive into my Peavey Vypyr 15 watt amp (set on Deluxe clean) and it sounds shockingly close to my DSL40. YES, even thru that little digital amp! It sounds so close, I rarely miss playing my Marshalls.
Now it doesn't do super high gain like the DSL but it has all the tone, punch, sag, dynamics and sustain of a loud Marshall tube amp and with my Dirty Fingers humbuckers, I can get Slash & EVH with no problem. If you still need more gain, just add in an overdrive or distortion pedal and your there.
Btw, I bought my Gold Overdrive used yet every time I have a question, Luis is more than happy to help me. Bottom line, AMAZING sound, AMAZING craftsmanship & AMAZING service... What more could you ask for? Rock On!
Well done and thanks for sharing brother!
Looking really good! Ahah hyped even before demo started
Very nice sounding pedal & great job as always Shane.
Sounds like what all Marshall’s are trying to be but only the rare special ones get there. I’m definitely getting this so can finally have that sound.
Like this pedal alot,I can sho'nuff tell you did. Might be looking into getting one soon. Great demo video.
Awesome review! Thanks...
This channel is Blues in a box! LOVE it. Nice work!
Of all the MIB style pedals I've seen on YT, this has always been at the top for me. There isn't a single video of it that sounds weird or bad. Whatever people do, it sounds killer!
Sounds like a Marshall. LP + Marshal = Happy days. Tele + Marshall = Happy days. Want clean, turn pedal off = Fender. It's like you can have both amps without bringing 2 amps.
That’s exactly my rig. Princeton and this, delay phaser sd1 wah tuner and eq
I've been wanting one of these for a long time. Finally pulled the trigger and bought one.
I am not a guy that drools over a JCM800 but this pedal is very impressive at delivering the sound . If I was a Metal head I'd probably love it because , quite frankly , it sounds like an amplifier. Thanks for showing us the inside too, it's bloody tidy 👌
This thing was made to gain up. One of the only Marshall emulating pedals that actually sounds like a Marshall.
Decided to look into marshall in a box pedals today...
And here you are having litterally just uploaded this video yesterday !
Success! Shane's smile says it all! Thanks for posting! Yes a 👍 & lasted the entire video lol🤟
Bought one a month ago! It definitely mimics a Marshall. Gigged a few times and really love it! I recommend if you want the tonal qualities of a Marshall. Run it through my main input but it does sound best through the effects loop direct to power amp.
Ripping man! Sounds awesome!
Nick in the States Hey buddy!!! Great to see you here!!!🤙🏾🤙🏾🎸🎸🎸🎸
Thanks Nick! Hope you're well mate!
How are you ? How's the family ? HUTCHfromBA@hotmail
I recently picked up a rare USED Gold Overdrive and it's SO good. If you have a clean Fender type tube amp, this will give you the best of both worlds. I still love my little Golden Plexi but the Pal def has more complexity and smoothness with a very prominent attack. I see now why it also sounds great through solid state amps. It's because the pedal is generating so much of your attack, tone & sustain that it makes up for some of those solid state shortcomings. Either way, this pedal shines. Shane said it right... It makes you wanna play.
Awesome, just checked there site, and i think the night overdrive would be the best for my applications. great video.
Sweet demo Shane ! Thanks ! :-)
Wow
Thanks Shane 👍🏻
What a transformation
Sounds more JCM800
Will be looking forward to one be man f these 👌🏻👍🏻
Great demo Shane...I watched a few other videos of this pedal, including TTKs...really sounds great...man, that Tele into it was killa! Thanks for sharing your opinion of it!
TTK throws so much gain on....every demo sounds EXACTLY the same. I actually opened 3 different tabs once and played different pedal demos back to back and they all literally sounded identical. Not to tear him apart but calling it like it is.....the playing is very sub par. 98% is simple root 5th power chords. We're certainly not getting any dynamics, volume control (to clean up), legato, staccato etc with him. His knowledge is decent but that's where it ends …..all just my opinion.
Reminds me of the Guv'nor yes, the original black one which was a Plexi-in-a-box, this PAL sounds sweet like that one
Thanks for showing the guts. Looks quality, hand-crafted, even! Lots of nice, real components, as opposed to all the surface-mount stuff you often see.
Great sounds & guitar playing. Sweeet ! I'm a fender clean kind of guy. But this pedal gives me both in one fender amp. Blues On....
I have one now for a half a year. I demo from Andy sold me on this one. Amazing pedal. I run it in front of Tone King imperial MK II with Celestion Ruby speaker. Tone heaven! I think I might sell my Marshall SL 5 ;) Cheers!
Did you record your tone with the cam mic?
Sounds pretty good to me. I have the Wampler Plexi Drive, the first edition one, and the Pal 800 Gold sounds as good but is a bit cheaper, and looks like it has a lot more circuitry for the money, not to mention the 3 band EQ, and presence. If my Plexi Drive breaks, I might consider this for a replacement.
is it mostly jcm800? Im curious how this stacks up with to something like the Catalinbread DLS - seems the DLS has a bit more versatility with their pedal for a Superbass to plexi range
How do you think the Marshall Jackhammer in od mode stacks up to the pal 800? I would think a Marshall pedal would do a great job getting a Marshall tone no?????
I wonder how one of those would sound through a vox ac15? Anyone have any ideas?
Great tones. 😎
You should try the Strymon Riverside Drive.
Whats the difference between the solver and gold model?
How does the Lawerence Petross seventy 4 compare to this?
Hell yes... Very nice. I always thought that Wampler had the top amp in a box pedal for Marshall?
I didn't expect such a beast! Awesome!
That's pretty damn good. What is the price. If it had a boost button, assignable pre or post and move that switch to the top. The amp SIM pedals have a voice knob which allows you to find the mid frequency which makes your rig sound like the amp you want to emulate. The joyo California has the voice pot actually ads more gain as you rotate clockwise so you can pull off the mk4 sweet high gain soloes. How hard would it be to add that voice knob to all these pedals? Great pedal. Great job as always
Hi Shane, this pedal sounds great ! Love that dirty agressive JCM 800 sound. The JCM 900 and the PLEXI are sounding much more treblish. You do also reviews of XVive pedals.. do you happen to have a Thomas Blug XVive Golden Brownie in the house ? Would like a comparison between these two.. The Golden Brownie is also modelled after a JCM 800. Thanks for the review ! Greets from Belgium. BTW.. did a search for it and apparently they are only for sale at Reverb. Listprice 185 US Dollar. NONE for sale now ??
Sounds good Shane. You MIGHT want to try it AS a preamp, by going into the fx return on 1 of your amps!
Rockin'!
that makes no senses. why would you recreate a sound that you already created? you don't even need an amp. if this pedal really works for what it claims then the whole signal process must be done by itself. i doubt that this pedal would behave like a real Marshall.
It makes PERFECT sense, IF you understood the principles involved. I have done videos just to this effect! If it is emulating the sound of a certain amp, it is recreating its PREAMP characteristics, so using it thru a 2nd preamp, (on your amp would colour it further! Otherwise it is JUST a dirt box!) I have done this many times.
@@DMSProduktions I do apreciate your response and the time you took but does it really make sense? why would you color and reshape a sound that is already perfect? if you have the real Marshall sound in a pedal you don't need anything else. it's simply redundant and the more you load your signal chain with effects and any sort of stuff the more you have to deal with noise, unwanted peaks and frequencies. and this is not me just talking, i'm telling you based on my own experience.
Umm no, I think you have it wrong again!
Of course IF you already HAD a Marshall amp to begin with, you would not USE this pedal!
I mean to turn a NON Marshall sounding amp INTO 1, and it has an effect loop, you use it to BYPASS the amp's pre stage, as that is where MOST of the amps sound footprint is created. ALL you are using the amp for is its power/output stage!
You are NOT using it as a line THRU effect!
@@DMSProduktions ok i got you. you are right. i thought the pedal would simulate the entire process including the amp and the speaker just like the Axe-FX. now makes sense. lol
thanks for your time!
Questions: Have you played/better than Carl Martin Plexi Tone? Better than Walrus 385? AND how is the usable range? Does it sound good all through the gain range or does it have a sweet spot? Sorry for the Qs but you’ll hear things in your room that just won’t come through on the video! Got my SwampThang in the mail today ;-)
Is thsi different than the chrome one? How?
Nice review, though personally I'm not hearing anything particularly special from this pedal, sounds like every other basic overdrive/distortion to me, maybe even a bit muddy... I bet it sounds allot better in person though.
I wonder how it compares to the Rowin Pexion pedal and stuff like that...
Thank you! 💓🎸🎵🎶🎶🎵🎶🎵🎵🎵🎶🎶🎶🤗🤗🤗🤗
Shane, would it sound good on the clean channel of your DSL40CR? I'd like to get it for mine, but I'm worried it will sound like too much Marshall on Marshall. Thanks.
haha! Good question I should give that a go.
I totally agree i dont know why people slate the guvnor mk2. ive had loads of pedals and the guvnor still sounds more marshall like than most of them ive tried. It can get bluesy , and has lots of gain if needed.
Maybe best Marshall JCM800 in a box, but there's other Marshalls in a box too. I think best Marshall JMP in a box is Rockett Animal Overdrive. It's pretty handy to have these amps in a box pedals because then you can have many amps to use just by switching pedal, because some of them really sounds like original :)
Sounded more 'amplike' solo, versus in the mix. Why would that be? Were both recorded the same way?
A pencil or guitar pick can get at a toggle between pedals, no?
How would you rate this versus your actual DSL40? Is it 'as' amplike as the amp, but a slightly different flavor, or can you tell it's a pedal?
I recorded it the same way but mixed the intro clip differently. I had two mics and I favoured one or the other one the intro to make it sound the way that worked best to my ear.
I wonder if it can do the ' Low Gain' Led Zeppelin thing?.. Maybe a KT88 loaded 200watt Plexi is a much too a different amp ( Jimmy Pages Amp)
I can't find this pedal I Europe :-/
The ear-to-ear grin tells it all.
You should try the Weehbo JCM Drive Ltd. Ed. someday. :D
We need comparison with Joyo British Sound. It 10 times cheaper, but is it even worse?
I think I can help you. I own the Gold Overdrive and I used to own the Joyo British Sound. Btw, I sold the Joyo for $20 and never regretted it. I could NEVER get a good sound out of it. It always sounded flat and lifeless. It had no presence. A bit of that blanket over the speaker sound. I tried many times to dial it in but with no luck. The Gold Overdrive is the exact opposite. It's FULL of life & presence with a rich, complex tone. The pick attack is awesome! When you strike the note, out comes that cutting, Marshall, glassy harmonics sound. But what's even more amazing is that the attack is also soft. IOWs, it sags just like a cranked all tube amp. Esp, when you strum a chord, there's an immediate sponginess which then blooms/ swells into a smooth, oh so sweet tone. I have other MIAB pedals with plenty of compression but none accomplish the sag & bloom of a real cranked Marshall. The Pal does! I've owned the PAL for a couple weeks now but I still look down at it in amazement that such a sweet tone and response is coming from a solid state pedal. Bottom line, the Pal may look like the British Sound but it's on a whole other level. BTW, if you're on a budget, the Golden Plexi is terrific pedal and it has a nice low gain too. It's way more alive and present than the British Sound and it has those great high harmonics. It's also sturdy & well built. Anyway, I hoped this helped. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Rock On!
ID ADD A BBE SONIC STOMP, AND THE PAL 800. nothing else🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Pedal sounds great. Be careful though Shane. Warners are on the warpath and might copyright the video because of those knobs ;)
This pedal sounds great... but only reminds me of Hal 9000 when I see the name LOL
Damn it.....you know, i neen wanting one of these or the jcm pedal. I just realized they are made in Venezuela. Well, I guess we here in the states wont be getting one of these awaome pedals. Heck, good chance no one will if they dont get the power back on down there. Geeez. Why does everyone have to fight. It just gets in tue way of things.
You can order these off of reverb.com for around 200 dollars shipped
Cool not even to expensive for some western brand? For me the best Marshall in the box in Marshall guv'nor 2 ☺ yes that one that can be cheep found a dirty cheep..amazing building quality. I never understood why people don't like them when they are built like tank, and can survive atomic blast plus sound is amazing. Would be cool if you can make video why some bad aka crap pedals became popular and super expansive and why some amazing are overlooked.
You should have compared it to the real deal. It'd do in a pinch, but it doesn't hold a candle to your 40.
I don't own a JCM800 but I will be comparing it on another video with my Marshall DSL ;-)
@@intheblues how about comparing it to the Tone City - Golden Plexi ?
I've been watching Reverb for this pedal for months, always sold. Very discouraging
🤣Think ur gain knob might be broken.... I couldn’t hear a difference when you were turning it down... normally I don’t mind a bit of dirt in the mix but it’s way too much for my fragile sensibilities :P still a good video though mate
This or Exotic Effects SL Drive?
This one
This.
He said Pal, not PELL! ;oP
Why is it so dark...is it the IR's or something?
What IR's? It's an Amp/Speaker/Mics. If you like a brighter sound dial in more tops on the amp but I don't.
@@intheblues My bad, forgot about that. By default was assuming this went into the two notes.
There is also a trim pot inside you can adjust !!
Sounds awesome! Nice Pedal! Lotsaluv&gypsykisses💋💋💋
Sounds pretty beefy. Some nice fender highs should cure its solid state blues.
it’s fizzy, clips too hard, and lacks the lower and mid range you get from a JHS Charlie Brown, Purple Plexi, or Wampler Plexi Drive...not in same league
I think because PAL models JCM and those others Plexi.
Yeah, those pedals are copying a different amp. Most pedals go for that 60s marshall sound. This one is going for the 80s marshall sound.
gurus 1959 double decker is the best I have ever heard.
I have one sounds nothing like this not impressed!
WAYYYYY to dark.
I stopped watching it at the first chord
