3 Tips For Stacking Overdrive And Distortion Pedals
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 тра 2020
- This week I give you three easy tips to remember when stacking gain pedals, whether overdrive or distortion pedals.
When stacking 2 dirt pedals together, the key thing to remember is that the 2ndpedal in the chain dictates the overall tone of the stack.
Cranking the volume on the first pedal in the stack will not raise the volume, but will increase the clipping (gain) in the second pedal.
Using a pedal with plenty of EQ options can help better sculpt your dirt tones
Bonus tip: an overdrive into a distortion channel on amp or already driven amp is another form of stacking gain

i'd recommend to put the smaller pedals on top of the bigger ones, otherwise they might fall over (especially when you stack more than three pedals)
As long as you find the center of the pedal; size isn’t as relevant
As a proud member of the society for putting things on top of other things, I would agree lol!! Haha, who doesn't love a good monty python reference
I didn't figure that out for years
That is a sound Foundation
Agreed
Long story short...Tumnus makes EVERYTHING BETTER.
Yep, I always use my Tumnus deluxe to stack before anything. Fuzz, Distortions even Metal Zone
Same here, I use the mini into a mini TS!! they like each other a lot
Love the Tumnus Deluxe. I've had it for a couple years and last week I sitting and playing with my phone on my knee. It slid off and landed straight down on the switch and broke it. Emailed Wampler and told them what happened with a few pics and wanted to know what it would take to get it fixed. They sent me 2 new switches with no hassle. Awesome customer service from these guys.
Yeah, Wampler needs to restore karma for that broken Strat neck from years ago. That's the only reason good customer service exists. God knows what sins Sweetwater committed in a past life.
Thats really awesome. Ive been emailing another Builder for 6 months now and they haven't even answered yet. My KLONE from Math@#s Effects has broke 3 times and they just keep ignoring me so I have to pay to have the Switch , Zener and output jack fixed so far. TUMNUS here I come.
It's 2:30 am.. I was on the fence about impulse buying a WampRat (Ratsbane) and hearing about your great customer support from Wampler made me decide to just go ahead and buy it.
Brian saw my post on a broken pedal I'd just bought used on eBay (I bought it working). He told me where to send it to be fixed for free. I told him I bought it used and it was out of warranty. He said don't worry about that! He got it fixed for me totally free :D
I love that you are wearing another youtubers merch. The way you guys support each other is awesome!
People think the Tumnus, Klon, Architect, Merman, etc. are transparent -- for those that do not know -- because of the way the drive / gain knob works. It is a dual gang pot, meaning it is essentially two pots in one (not a dual concentric knob). As you turn down the drive knob, the gain circuit is mixed out in favor of the clean signal. The drive portion of the signal is very mid range heavy, while the clean portion of the circuit is "transparent."
this is the most succinct description I've seen. I didn't know about the dual gang pot till I tried to build one. thank you.
@@scrummyvision If memory serves, the circuits splits the signal into three sections: the 'clean' signal, the 'distortion/overdrive' signal (which is supposedly based on the DOD 250/MXR Dist+ circuit), and then the bass/low end is processed outside of that. The treble affects the signal and is patched in from the last opamp section. There is a Tube Screamer version from Maxon (more or less; the hard clipping overdrive section is a soft clipping Tube Screamer instead).
@@austinfailz warms my heart that someone else nerds out about this stuff so much I get a response within the hour. gonna go through the circuit schematics and see what I can learn, thanks!!!!!
That cat was like "Who you trying to get crazy with esse? Don't you know I'm loco?"
overdrive low gain + trasparent overdriva 2:39 overdrive low gain + overdrive higth vol = + gain 5:09 overdrive traspartent eq flex + trasparent overdrive 6:57 amp drive or distorcion pedal + overdrive = hard rock vibes 9:50 amp driver + pantheon overdrive = pantheon best pedal 10:16
Another neat trick is to stick a delay pedal between the two distortion/overdrive pedals. You don't need to use much to realize a great tone. It's something that Carlos Santana is credited with doing.
Definitely trying that.
I just added a Faux Tape Echo because it has tap. I put that after my gain but kept my Belle Epoch which I also like but no tap and put it before gain for classic sounds but maybe I should put it between both pedals.
The cat is back! Your Tumnus still sounds like Tumnus - pure gold.
Damn. The Pantheon and Tumnus sound amazing individually but takes it to the next level when you stack them!
That cat is having none of Brian's shit today, thank you.
Tumnus paired with Pantheon = magic
Love my Pantheon. Though the Pantheon and Tumnus should be the newest 2-in-1 pedal.
Can I just say thank you for making the Tumnus. It's such a simple yet powerful pedal. I use it going through my orange rocker and it's basically acts as my dirty channel. I have a ts9 after it that adds the mid hump I need for solo's. What blew my mind when I first started using the Tumnus was how powerful the volume knob is! It's so versatile with other pedals but just as a normal overdrive it sounds beautiful.
I have been stacking pedals for quite awhile now. However, this maybe one of the best explanation of how stacking pedals really works. Thank you.
Tumnus for the solo boost! Placed between my rythem pedal (paisley) and the amp. Leave the rythem pedal on. Creamy crunchy goodness. You can see it on their faces.
I totally appreciate that you used “tighter” to describe the overall tone that we get. That has help me heaps in looking for the tone I’m trying to hit.
If you add a tube screamer or similar pedal to an amps dirty channel it tightens up. Keep gain on amp and pedal fairly low though.
Good lordt!! That Pantheon sounds so good. Can’t wait to get mine tomorrow. (It better be here tomorrow!) and boost it with my Tumnus!! Can’t believe I waited this long to order a Pantheon. Wampler Dirt is good Dirt!
I am a clean tone freak and here I am listening to this genius channel.
The Tumnus into the pantheon is the thing I've been doing for ages. It was my little tone secret.... Until now that is....
Yeah it’s kind a like the agony and the ecstasy. You love the fact that somebody absolutely Got behind something you just discovered on your own...and then they blab it to 1 million UA-camrs🥺
Thank you for another great vid Brian!! You, and your pedals are the best, and have improved my life a lot!!
I just stacked my OCD v1.7 into a Golden Klon- It was a revelation!
Brian's videos are, as always, eminently educational.
You are great Mr Wampler! Thanks for all the pedal advice!
Superbly helpful tutorial. A Proper education!
Good advice! I'm going to try these concepts in the HX Stomp.
Wow that was excellent Brian. Gain stacking experimentation here we come!
Right on! I've always wondered how that works. Thanks!
Thank you Brian, this was a very informative video.
Thanks again for another well done video. Informative and easy to understand. I love my Pantheon, as well. Looking forward to swapping it around now that you offered some excellent clarity on the matter.
Great video Brian! Especially for a relative newbie. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Brian knows his business for sure. This man knows how to build great pedals.
Tumnus is my favorite pedal to stack.
Wow that Tumnus pedal is straight up 70’s Hard Rock tone heaven! Great sound!
Love your channel Brian... Your pedals are awesome...
I am currently running an OCD into a Beetronix Overhive into a Tumnus... quite enjoying the variabilities! Thanks for another great video, Brian!
Very informative Brian, Thanks! I will now be swapping pedals this weekend
Thanks. This is a helpful video. I enjoy stacking a tumnus deluxe into a snouse Black box 2. I like having the extra control over the mids, particularly as the gain is up on the on the tumnus.
Wicked. I just bought both of these. Gonna try it.
This is the advise I'm looking fr. Thanks!
Thanks Brian. Very helpful!
Just wanted to say thanks for your work, I have a Tumnus Delux, it is fantastic.
Brian, thank you for these videos. And also your 'nerd' videos.
Its really helped me to understand the multiple ways to use distortion pedals.
Also, not much on modulation, but still find it interesting
outstanding job on this topic
That was very helpful. Thank you!
I was mostly an acoustic player and have ventured into the electric world. I'm focused on overdrives and experimenting with the King of Tone, Mojomojo, and ODR-1, but now it seems I'll need to try the Tumnus and Pantheon. Great stuff, and thank you for the very useful video.
I've been running a Nu-Tube into a MXR Zakk Wylde overdrive, it's definitely a different setup, very lively!
Really love this topic!
One of my favorite tones is the Pantheon into the Paisley Drive. Pantheon is set up for a medium gain, loose but airy type tone, then the Paisley Drive comes in with a mid bump and volume boost for lead tones. Super awesome with medium to high output pickups
Just for clarification. You put the pantheon first, then the paisley? Thanks!
Tumnus is the best first stage overdrive available nowadays. Mine is always on at low gain. I have tried many many others (SD1, TS808, POT, Klon KTR, Moonshine, Amp11), but the Tumnus is by far the best one and makes my other distortion/overdrives to shine. Congrats on such an amazing pedal.
Thanks, glad you like it!
How do you have the Tumnus set up as your first stage?
Have a klon... Convinced now that I will be ordering a Patheon. Thanks for these awesome videos Brian.
Amazing combination (Tumnus & Pantheon).
I recently bought the Tumnus Deluxe and Nobels ODR-1 BC. I kept both in the end.
I have now 3 Wampler pedals on my board and love them all very much.
Wow - great info! I just ran my Tumnus into an old Boss DS 1 Distortion and it cleaned it up and made my humbucker power chords crisper and more articulate. I hate muddiness and fuzz!
Funny you mentioned the ocd. Ive been digging my 808 into the ocd recently. Pretty heavy tones to be had. This got me thinking to flip the order to see what happens. Great video as always, Thanks!
That sounds incredible. All of it.
I run a Wampler moxie in to a inferno distortion then a booster with some EQ setting. I'm loving it. I can't wait to get off work to Jam out
Grumpy Cat doesn't look too excited about overdrive and distortion pedals.
Absolutely love the Pantheon, the best sounding BB overdrive pedal I’ve ever heard, only thing I would stack it with is a Les Paul😷
Must get a Wampler pedal. I have a Eye See 78 into a BB-Pre. Sometimes I use a Dark Matter 2nd. Great info!!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
I already wanted to try both of these pedals and now you made this video..... hahah great tips! I currently stack a TS mini into an OCD to get my tones, but none of them have a lot of EQ options
I use Xotic SP Comp (always on/subtle squeeze) into Mini TS into Mini Tumnus...TS for light blues...Tumnus for creamy boost...both on for great lead blues/rock OD/Dist.
I ordered a Tumnus yesterday, so I'm excited to be adding my second Wampler product to my gear. The "pedal platform" ideology is brand new to me in spite of playing out regularly for over 30 years, but it's cool that you are as dedicated to showing how to really get the most out of these pedals as you are in building them. Wampler absolutely rocks, hands down.
Side note: all those crazy "pedal platform" discussions I'd brush off over the years... those people were RIGHT!! Late to the party... :D
I need both of these.
Amazing tones, and amazing tips... Thanks, hoss... Cheers from Nashville...
You nailed my thoughts at the end... A Klon style into my Ultimate Drive (OCD clone)... I'm normally a clean/single coil cat, so I don't have a ton of experience stacking gain... Thank you...
love cranked sound from that pedals
Literally waiting in my Pantheon to do the same thing, haha I know some amps have sounded great due to their “gain-stacking” so I’m glad you brought this one up! 🖖🏻
I just bought on on Friday! Supposed to have been here on Monday.... still waiting..
John Bradford yep, the struggle is real, mine got lost in the mail, refunded and purchased again, end of the week, so close and fingers crossed! 🤘🏻🤞🏻
That first thing was pretty neat.
I want a pedal with Both a tumnus and a pantheon.
Kinda like a king of tone kinda thing.
With a switchable arrangement setting (tumnus into Pantheon or vise versa).
The klon is the most transparent clean boost ive ever heard. Not a transparent od but transparent clean boost. If you have an amp like a plexi or jcm800, the klon will give you more saturation (when used as a clean boost) but with very little colouration. I dont think its a very elegant circuit but its very utilitarian.
I bought both pedals because of this video, I can do most of my gigs with these pedals and a delay. I think a double drive with one side tumnus and another pantheon would be the goat. Love them!!
Horsebreaker by Ceriatone.
I have to say - the Pantheon is one of those pedals I NEVER consider taking off my board... I just love it as a mid gain sound by itself, or being pushed for a higher gain. But now I feel like an idiot because one of the few pedals I haven't tried in front of it is the Tumnus!
Brian, have you ever taken apart a BBE Sonic Stomp (maximiser)? Would love to hear your take on that pedal and what it actually does to your signal. It’s an interesting one for sure.
I have a tumnis into the archer, sounds really good, for awhile I had the tumnis into OCD that was really good too. I found I liked the OCD by its self though and I have a hard time switching to the other channels because I'm hooked on the OCD. My three other channel options are a plimsoul by its self, then the tumnis/archer and then a OMG (Richie Kotson signature ) driven by a mutt overdrive/fuzz type that I bought used cause it sounded so good. Mutt in that it was built by someone locally but not a production name brand thing. If that makes sense... Has no markings on it three pots and two toggles one toggle is three positions the other is two position. They do change the tone or overall sound when I fiddle with em. Stacking with the OMG is awesome, sound is humongous and mean, like all the hornets are are mad and coming for ya. lol...
Thanks for the tips, that did help plus gave me some ideas and justified my continuing on the chase for tone. lol...
🎸🤓🎸🇺🇸☮
Your awesome with information on pedals
Pantheon is my favourite pedal !
Nice work Brian
Mico K
The Tumnus into the cranked Deluxe Reverb was great. If you just turn the treble a bit on the amp, I bet you’d have an amazing OD sound.
I've been stacking a pantheon into a tumnus deluxe, but after watching this I am definitely going to try flipping them around! Great video!
thanks for the tips
I stacked an original bud box distortion plug into the tumnus tonight. It was cool. Volume up and gain down on the mxr, gave the tumnus such a thick fat bottom end.
Pretty much all I use is your pedals. Need to try your amp?? I use older Fender and Matchless. Great job!!!!!!! Love your products...
Imo this is what makes stacking fun- I can take some of the drive pedals I have that have fixed parameters and no eq and run them through a pedal that has EQ, contour, presence, etc.- and totally change the sound. In fact, I have a few drive pedals I was going to get rid of because I didn't care for the way they sounded- until I ran them through a pedal that had the controls I wanted- now they sound amazing. The Rat for instance, not really my cup of tea- too muffled sounding, but you hit it with a midrange boost and keep the dist. turned way down- sounds great. It does a lot for my clean tone as well because I have all that eq ability built into my signal chain- just turn the drive pedals on and kill the gain. The only issue I run into sometimes- too many pre-amps. It can get a little aggravating sometimes when you have 3-4 different EQs in the chain to try and tweak.
Thank you for the info!!! good!!
I've been using the Tumnus Deluxe running into a Boss Angry Driver. Pretty sweet!
I use both as well. Curious as to what settings you like the best. Thanks man!
Heck that Pantheon sounds good! Might have to buy it to pair it with my Tumnus Deluxe :D
I say this as often as often as i get a chance to, i built a Brian May style Treble Booster that sounds incredible and when i use it to boost the Klon Clone i also built its magic into my Marshall DSL100HR. The klon was just a pedal kit and one of the first kits i did and it sounds really great also. The warm/transparent tone of the klon works really great with the articulate high end/mid boost of the treble booster. I also added a tone selector switch to the treble booster and auditioned capacitors until i found the perfect ones for stock/treble boost, mid boost, and full range bass boost. But the Klon also sounds great being boosted by a normal TS9 for a more modern tone.
dude. fuzz face into tumnus is amazing. make a 2 in 1 pedal. add a bass boost for the fuzz face and youll have a new best seller.
@goobtuber I honestly don't know cause I'm a volume on 10 all the time guy, but you've given me something to try!
or maybe the Fuzztraion and Tumnus dlx? Wait, maybe I should just buy both of those pedals, because I already love them but I don't own them yet. Probably that...
@@PoliteAF Fuzztration is the perfect fuzz imo. Total Swiss army style fuzz, capable of just about any fuzz tone you want
Band of Gypsies fuzz face mini after the mini Tumnus is insane🎸🤘🏼🇵🇹🇺🇸
@@carldemelo1132
I have those. Must try it.
I like to stack my drive pedals from less gainy od to one with most gain distortion. It's that because, on a high gain stage I would like the character of the more gainy pedal, that's why I have it in the first place. From Wampler I use a Plextortion right on the end of my gain stage and it works fine for me
I use a XTS Tejas Boost into a Wampler Plexi Drive into a Reeves Custom 50. It's absolutely tone heaven.
So can we think of a pedal board as a macro circuit? Wonderful video.
Great Content
Super helpful!!
SD-1 with the volume dimed but no gain into a Rat with a low gain setting and I little tone cut is an absolutely killer tone.
Time for a 60 Cycle Hum collab with Wampler! :) Great video, and really instructive
GREAT SOUNDS and GREAT VIDEO as usual... I have a Soverign and a Tumnus. Can you do a video with those 2 pedals... I also use a SoulPog and i cant decide what i wanna use or what i wanna have first or second or third in the chain. I get great tones with all but just curious i guess on the many variations and combinations with the pedals. I use a Mesa Boogie JP2C into a 1x12 open back cab and LOVE how all the pedals sound through the clean channel of the boogie. I see we got a new Whitfill Tele... She's PURTY. Sounds great also.
Tumnus into Belle both at low gain. Tasty sound.
TS into OCD is my gain stacking. Three choices. Each independent, or both on.
I sometimes front load my Pinnacle deluxe with a klon type pedal. When you also engage boost on the Pinnacle- it gets pretty sick. In a good way. I wish you could flip the order of effects on the Pinnacle- maybe an idea for V3? 🤓🤘🏻🎸
BRUUHHHHHHH. That sounds fantastic!
I did a lot of stacking pedals at one point and it made me think about what people call "tone" much differently than I did before and certainly moreso than people typically think of it. Tone is how you are manipulating the strings and guitar; the notes. The gear is dictating the voicing, which is different than tone in my opinion. I realized how much speakers influence voicing, as well as amps and pedals later in the chain. Things like pickups matter to some extent, but you'll see a bigger improvement in voicing from a speaker upgrade.
Good stuff!
