  • It is possible to see many major sites in Shanghai for free. Join me as I visit several locations along the northern part of the classic Bund (or Waitan) next to the Huangpu in central Shanghai. I pass by all the buildings but focus on the HSBC, Cathy Peace Hotel, Península Hotel and former British Consulate.
The Bund or Waitan is a waterfront area and a protected historical district in central Shanghai. The area centres on a section of Zhongshan Road (East Zhongshan Road No.1) within the former Shanghai International Settlement, which runs along the western bank of the Huangpu River in the eastern part of Huangpu District. The area along the river faces the modern skyscrapers of Lujiazui in the Pudong District. The Bund usually refers to the buildings and wharves on this section of the road, as well as some adjacent areas. This region has a significant European influence, with the style of many structures most comparable to that of European cities, particularly Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical, Romanesque, Art Deco, and Renaissance architecture. Additionally, some of the city's top eateries are located there. From the 1860s to the 1930s, it was the rich and powerful centre of the foreign establishment in Shanghai, operating as a legally protected treaty port.
The HSBC Building (also known as the Municipal Government Building) is a six-floor neo-classical building in the Bund area of Shanghai, China. It served as the headquarters of the Shanghai branch of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation from 1923 to 1955, and currently houses the Shanghai Pudong Development Bank. The building is situated at number 12, the Bund. Designed by the British architecture firm Palmer & Turner Architects and Surveyors, construction of the building lasted from 5 May 1921 to 23 June 1923.
The Peace Hotel is a hotel on The Bund in Shanghai, China, which overlooks the surrounding areas. The hotel has two different buildings. The Sassoon House, originally housed the Cathay Hotel and is today the Fairmont Peace Hotel run by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts of Canada. The South Building was built as the Palace Hotel and is today a residence and studio for artists, known as The Swatch Art Peace Hotel. The two buildings both face the Bund, but are divided by Nanjing Road.
The building was built by Sir Victor Sassoon, of the Sassoon family, which built a Shanghai business and real estate empire in the early 20th century. He was a British Sephardic Jew of Iraqi origin, educated at Harrow School and Cambridge University. His family owned the trading company "E.D. Sassoon & Co.", which managed extensive business interests in Bombay, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.
Sassoon House was the first high-rise building built by Victor Sassoon, and one of the first skyscrapers in the Eastern Hemisphere. Sassoon bought a full city block on a prominent spot on the Bund prior to construction. When built the Sassoon House topped out at fifty feet taller than the next tallest building on the Bund. It was designed by architects Palmer and Turner, with a reinforced concrete structure. Construction began in 1926, and was completed in 1929.
The Peninsula Shanghai is a luxury hotel among The Peninsula Hotel Group. It was ranked the No. 8 hotel in the world by Travel + Leisure in 2015. The Peninsula Shanghai opened in 2009 and is The Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels second hotel in Mainland China. Its address is No.32 Zhongshan East First Road, Shanghai 200002, China.

Hello TIm...I recently discovered your channel and am so happy that I did, you have a relaxing manner and you are a wealth of information relating to Shanghi. I had been traveling to China for the years 2006 to 2019 and would stay for about two months on my US visitors visa. My home base has been Shanghai and I'm looking forward to resuming my visiting your beautiful city in April this year..😃⛩. Your videos have provided me with new and unique insights into Shanghai and I had to say to you how happy I am to watch and learn about so many things I did not know about your city until seeing it through your eyes. Many many thanks🙏🙏🙏

Wow, thanks a lot for such a response, I am glad the "for free" series gets some likes, as they don't get as many views as the other videos.

Thanks for the good work Tim. You know the S in HSBC stands for Shanghai right? It has been continuously operating in China since 1865. When the government told the bank that it could have its old house back for a nominal fee it refused. Brilliant you Brits! The most iconic building among all the ones on the strip is probably the Custom House as it has the clock on top. Grew up in the city with that image. My dad used to carry me to the Bund and he would put me on the topside of the barricade looking over the nothingness that is now the Lujiazui area.

On some working days, the headquarters branch of Shanghai Pudong Development Bank operates as usual and is open to the public, and it is worth noting that the restrooms inside have a vintage and upscale feel.
