Hello, I am British and have been living in Shanghai since 2010, and first visited in 2006 when there were only 4 metro lines, it now has 18, depending on which you count. Please join me (and my sometimes partner / son William) as we explore the ever-expanding transportation network here in Shanghai and China. My channel has mainly been about public transportation systems in Shanghai and Asia, but I am branching out into general tourism tips and also covering some of the very popular expos that are mainly in Shanghai.
Shanghai Metro; What's Coming Next ?
Join me on the Shanghai Metro as I show you what's coming next in the expansion of the largest metro network in the world.
The Shanghai Metro (Chinese: 上海地铁; pinyin: Shànghǎi Dìtiě); is a rapid transit system in Shanghai, operating urban and suburban transit services to 14 of its 16 municipal districts and to Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. Served as a part of Shanghai rail transit, the Shanghai Metro system is the world's biggest metro system by route length, totalling 802 kilometres (498 mi). It is also the second biggest by the number of stations with 408 stations on 19 lines. It ranks first in the world by annual ridership with 3.88 billion rides delivered in 2019. The daily ridership record was set at 13.29 million on March 8, 2019.

So cool
Did you see any human rights? I didn't...
I know it's been a year since you attended, but maybe you could give me your take on a question or two? I am in a 3rd world Asian country and I do think there is a small market here for some sales. I am wondering if you think there are manufacturing companies who would sell smaller orders (10 units)? Some of the higher end e-bikes are also too much to realistically move in my location. I see decent bikes on Alibaba at a decent rate, but then you realize they didn't include the battery or some nonsense. I'm thinking about attending 1 or 2 of these bike exhibitions, I just feel like the suppliers might not want business with a company moving 40-60 a year, which I think this market is capped at. I would love your input. Thanks and great video.
Great video, Tim. I was amazed riding Line 9 recently when I saw all those stickers covering up future transfer stations. Amazing! And to think, when first moved to Shanghai the only way to Chongming Island was ferry. Soon there will be a metro…. I can’t wait to ride the Airport to Airport rail. I’ll look forward to your video.
上海地鐵道路翻譯有兩種寫法,如南京東路寫作West Nanjing Road,寫作縮寫時Nanjing Rd.(W)報站West Nanjing Road
Some of the new station names make sense unlike the silly renames a few years ago when several well known stations were renamed after the commie party
0:20 the little granpa is so cute
Is that Norweigian cruise line?
You're working in Nottingham university campus based in Ningbo?
yes
@@timmytumbler Is there a visa for the simple 6 month language crash course , if simple is the right word , how do you cope ?
3:04 The reason it is not labelled is because it's the eastern extension of Line 13, and I suppose they wanted to save a little ink
Thanks Tim! Great and informative video. Will be useful on my next visit to Shanghai ..... Whenever that will be, hopefully sooner rather than later. When I was in Shanghai I often changed metro lines at the Xhujiahui station (on my way to Cotton's Bar and Resturant on Xinhua Lu) and I was totally amazed by the walkway connecting line 1 with lines 9 and 11. Thanks again and keep up your excellent work.👏👏👍👍
3:34 the reason for that exclusion is that Jinshan Railway Line is operated by the Shanghai bureau of state-owned China Railway Group while other new suburban lines with the new logo are operated by a new Shanghai municipal company.
yes and sadly because all CR bureaus are Central Government's SOEs focused on long ranged transportation, the municipal governments are not able to integrate their services into the metropolitan transit networks
@@My-nl6sg yes and there's exception, the Bay area inner-city transit system, has been owned by both CR Guangzhou (13%) and Guangzhou Subway Group (32%).
The covered part is usually written as "delayed opening", usually at the station under construction. After the construction is completed and put into use, cover the words with a whiteboard. This situation can be seen in the subways of many cities in China. China's subway construction is very fast, so it would be a waste to remake the route map and LED lights every time a new station is opened.
I’ve noticed that the metro map can be a bit confusing, especially when the lines are still under construction. It would be helpful if they could provide a more accurate map that reflects the current status of the lines.
I live in a city that takes years of talking before anything is approved and then years to to finish the work I'll take being confused over not having anything at all
Updating maps are surprisingly expensive as they are everywhere in the system. It’s not a problem if your city gets a new line for every 5 years or something, but in Shanghai as there are so many lines under construction and opening every two or three years, it is much cheaper to just print all the under construction ones once the map is updated on trains/stations and place stickers on them. If you check on your phone or refer to the printed map pamphlets available at the stations, they are usually accurate as they are cheaper to update
@ in my country and city in 2019 they started to work on adding 1 new station to our metro line (4 escalators 1 lower level and 1 upper level platform) They are still not finished it yet…, If we are lucky they might be done next year That new station for sure is not on any maps 😂😂😂😂
They should just add the upcoming lines in dotted format as in other cities
Hi mate is there a train that goes from the airport? I am planning to fly to Ningbo and ride the train to Zhoushan.
what subway station from shanghai to get there?
"Contacting the service staff"... Oh yeah, nobody speaks English. And dont forget to mention the obnoxious security scan at every entrance that forbids any knives, spray (deodorant etc). Good luck if you bought a kitchen knife, you have to walk home. Oh nooo I forgot. In order to buy a kitchen knife you have to show your valid Chinese ID or passport... ahh.. life is good in the middle kingdom
Glad they don't have them in Shanghai. The place would be better without ebikes and with far fewer shared bikes. They do look cool though
NIce!
what are you going to do with your precious free time? How about lets go to the Apple store and swipe on products that we already done 50 million times.
It’s a tradition, some celebrate the birth on the 30th day after birth and some do it at 100 days. As to cost, most attendees will bring gifts, mostly red packets containing money to help defray the cost. It’s a celebration among family and friends and a good excuse to get together.
Chinese don’t know where to spend money. Westerners are unable to afford the expensive rent, while in China you see splurge of money on this 😅
This would not be seen as a "splurge", sure it's not cheap for one family but everyone would have contributed with hongbao (money packets) and this was the first time the family was all together for a long time, very important gathering.
Im from morocco I work as a musician and a self-employed contractor selling musical instruments and audio equipment, and I would very much like to receive an official invitation from this exhibition to visit it in China and explore everything related to audio and music devices in this exhibition. Can i get it ?
I love the futuristic train station across the city of China. It's clean and very modern. 😊 ❤ The high speed train is great to commute if you want to get to the place so quickly.
All those foods and drinks, and the number of guests must cost the family a fortune!

the chinese just find every opportunity to eat.....
true. That’s why we celebrate every festival from anywhere on earth. Christmas, Halloween, all new excuses for Chinese to have a feast. 😂

Lovely video, I love those Chinese round tables in feasts, they are such cool thing, also, i loooved the second part, I love those country clan houses, we have a lot of it here, but the Chinese style of doing it is so different yet interesting for me. Cute baby, lovely farm.

The work ethics of China are disgraceful 10 days annual holiday and 10 days public holiday Taking into consideration that they either work 6 days per week or 7 days per week 10/12 hours a day That’s why so many travel at national holidays but this is dropping off now due to the lack of disposable income
Lol Since when do western people start agreeing that Chinese have any disposable income, you can't lose what you never had
It's quite bold of you to make such harsh accusations about China without providing any substantiated evidence. Your claim that China's work ethics are disgraceful is totally ignorant and misguided. While it's true that the country may have labor laws that allows for 10 days of annual holiday and 10 days of public holiday, you fail to acknowledge that this is in line with regional standards and cultural norms. You also neglected to mention the numerous social benefits that China provides to its citizens, such as a comprehensive national healthcare system, public wellness programs, and educational opportunities, and very affordable living costs. These benefits demonstrate China's commitment to supporting its people and promoting a positive quality of life. Your assertion that citizens are struggling with a lack of disposable income is ignorant. On the contrary, China regularly reviews its economic policies to ensure they remain competitive within the region. In conclusion, I urge lazy bum like you to refrain from making baseless accusations about a country that you clearly know little about. Instead, educate yourself on the relevant facts.
