In fact, it is rare to see police officers in China. The uniformed personnel you generally see on the streets are usually security guards, traffic coordinators, and auxiliary police. They are not police officers. Most of the surveillance cameras on the streets are for monitoring traffic violations. These cameras are used to capture instances of speeding, illegal lane changes, honking, etc. Security checks in subways and high-speed trains are implemented to prevent bad actors from carrying knives, flammable, or explosive materials onto trains, ensuring the safety of passengers. In the end, I can only say that we are all ordinary people; no one is really paying attention to what we are doing. All these measures are in place to prevent bad things from happening, and I think that's a good thing.
It is the sacrifice of privacy for security. Under a just government, it is a good thing. But under a corrupt one, it's bad. You can see this in the UK now. Peaceful protestors that oppose demographic change are being imprisoned for expressing their opinions.
@@DanJ888 That's not true, bro. I lived in Shanghai for 8 years and am now starting my graduate program in NYC. I was once deeply attracted to New York by its cultural diversity, integration, and more opportunities for development, and I’ve met many unique and nice people here. But I also have to admit that many streets here are filled with the unpleasant smell of weed, and homeless people and mentally unstable individuals can always be seen in the subway or on certain streets. I don’t even feel safe going out alone late at night. Compared to some metropolis in East Asia, NYC is far behind in these aspects.
I am a Taiwanese and I always love China, all my family members do. We are always proud being a Taiwanese and a Chinese. Not everyone is brainwashed and a lapdog of the US or the west in Taiwan.
6:58 The security guard said: Handsome, please keep your voice down, just so you can hear yourself. Don't disturb others. 😂(In fact, this is not a real police officer, it's a property security guard. (In China, it's not the uniformed ones are all the police, there is a difference in clothing.)

I went to China with my son in 2018. My son loved his first China experience, friendly people, delicious food, beautiful scenerues. China has long long history, full of vitality, peaceful. China's achievements are so enormous and still has a lot of potential. My son's Christmad wish was went to China again.
@@auroraraab1577 Welcome to China again! If you like Chinese culture, you might consider traveling to some of the ancient capitals of China, such as Beijing and Xi'an. If you enjoy food, you can visit Chongqing and Guangzhou. However, these cities are very far apart, so you need to plan ahead and book tickets for attractions in advance. China is vast, with different landscapes and food cultures in each region. Also, don't forget Chengdu, where you can see the giant pandas-it's amazing!
@@icaree2753 Really? I would recommend anywhere BUT Shanghai. Its like going to Japan for Tokyo. Suzhou, Hangzhou, Jilin, Beijing, Haerbin are all better cultural experiences.
Been living in China for about 9 years, I had reservations and negative ideas about China before stepping foot in the country (possibly due to the negative portrayal from western media). I can say that China is now my home, recently went back to the UK and was bewildered how unorganised it was. I guess I took the ease of living in China for granted. I hope that many more people like Harry can visit China before listening to the media and having the neagtive preconception. Of course there are things that happen here that are beyond my understanding, but who am I to judge. Before I was born, the UK was barbaric in the colonisation of various countries. People think they brainwash their citizens here, that can't be far from the truth. People go day to day with next to no problems with crime etc. In a nutshell, I could not be more happier with living in China, the people are friendly, the transportation is next level and the food is amazing. What a great video Harry, so stoked to see you have visited China, hope you enjoyed your time in Shanghai. Shanghai is amazing (love it here) 我爱中国

As a Chinese person, I find your video filled with strange moments. The marriage market seems strange, the man who speaks multiple languages seems strange, the small restaurant seems strange, and the cheap clothing store seems strange too... Your video gives off a very strange vibe everywhere. I don't know how to describe it. The places you went to seem like the kind of places my great-grandmother would go to.
Because there is a group of govt official that tour with him, nothing in the video is just a tourist visiting China. This is a Chinese govt production with western host to add credibility.
Chinese government officials don't have time for every foreign tourist. This is China, not North Korea. Are you confused between China and North Korea?
China's development is changing rapidly. After working away from home for a year, I almost couldn't find a home when I returned home. It is developing rapidly, and I hope you can have the experience of traveling to China again.

in the 90s they carried guns but after some reforms where the average citizen had to give up their arms, the average police (they have the license to carry but need a reason to draw from a higher up) also gave up theirs but the armed police aka swat kept theirs since they had to deal with more dangerous situations like poachers, crude diy arms armed criminals where normal riot gear isnt enough.

I am a subscriber for past one year. I do not understand the term most hated. I travelled to China back in 2005 and been there on seven occasions after this. I still have my Chinese friend for more than 18 years now. I lived in Ireland for 2 years and been to the UK 2 times. i have the chance to visit New York but turn it down. I prefer China rather than the west. The only difficulty is communication for me in China. I feel safe in the big cities in china compare to the free democracy of the west.
There is no difficulty in communication at all if you use google translate app or apple translate app. I see many people doing that. All you can do is speak to the app and the translation apps translate for you in local language. If you see the Chinese signage that you don’t understand, you can use the translation apps pointing the camera at the signage, the apps will translate back to you in English. I saw tourists doing that in China.
China is a democratic country! Most people get it so wrong and thought China is backward n still in the 70s! China is beyond the Western democracy which is so fake! To date they are still fighting for freedom!!
Yes, there are many security cameras in China, but the majority of Chinese people don't associate it with the lack of privacy. They will think it is safe to walk on the street. In addition, what privacy do people need when they walk on the street? As long as you did do anything against the law, you don’t have to worry about the cameras surrounding you. People in the West should adjust their mindset, and China is the safest country in the world.
Only if they place cameras in your property that is a violation of privacy. They place in public areas where police can freely patrol and where the privacy comes from?
I was waiting your China visit. Although I didn't know that you are going to China. By the way I'm Indian but really wanted your China visit. Hope you will explore China more than India, that's we really wanted. And as an Indian l love China. Thanks for your visit.

Visited China last year October with my family including ninety five year old aunt, best ever experience. People were civil and extremely kind. China's progress is enviable by all and its seen there at every nook and corner.
Since the founding of the People's Republic of China more than 70 years ago, China has never initiated any war. China has fought wars where other countries have invaded China first. Up to now, India, Philippines, Vietnam and other countries are still illegally occupying part of China's territory
I’m a little bit confused that some refused the public camera, but filming people arbitrarily. Public camera is for public safety, private camera is just for personal interest.

It is normal to have prejudice against a country, but over time, you will have a better understanding of it, whether it is good or bad, and you will have your own judgment
China has become one of the safest countries in the world, partly due to its extensive surveillance camera network. Chinese people generally do not feel that their privacy has been infringed; instead, they believe it contributes to their safety. Concerns about privacy are typically raised by perpetrators rather than the general population.
This vlogger definetly not worldly as they thought and still take in so much stereotype about China but big step they at least step out of their comfort zone

We moved from the UK to China six years ago. Never looked back. Honestly the Western rhetoric is pure propaganda and hardly reflects the reality here. It is safe, amazing living standards, technologically advanced and for once, a government that actually cares about society at large. They literally send officials to the poorest rural areas to get them out of poverty. They have to live with them and stay there until the job is done. High speed trains run at a near loss because the government wants to ensure there is cheap travel accessible to everyone. Access to healthcare is very cheap and of a high quality.
Exactly because china has lived under capitalist imperialists and radical communism and now has a middle way of state capitalism mixed with communist and socialist policies that have accounted for the largest increase in living standards in the shortest amount of time anywhere

Let me share with you my encountered with a young American couple in Thailand recently. They have flown from US to Singapore and they were traveling from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and then to Cambodia and Vietnam and before going back to US. We have happened to have a casual friendly conversation and I have asked them since they are so near to China, why not go to China just for a few days to see China. I told them China is very interesting. But I was surprised of what they told me. They said according to all their media reports in US and advice by their government and many other people. They were advice and told not to travel to China. Even their parents don't allow them to go to China. They were told China is not a safe country to travel. Very dirty, poor rundown infrastructures, poor transportation system, polluted, homeless people are everywhere waiting to rob tourists are common even in broad daylight. Chances of been detained for no reason by the Communist government is very high. Because China is an authoritarian state and all foreign visitors are monitored by thousands of cameras everywhere and every minute where foreign visitors go. Foreign visitors from western countries can be detained for months or even years for no reason. All these is what they know about China. The couple is like below 25 years of age and already so badly brainwashed by their government and controlled media. This is really sad to hear this is how U$ government educates the young people. What kind of future all these young people will ended up with?
Chinese people are not obsessed with the western culture. They are very proud of their own culture. They were queuing for bagels but they were also queuing for a lot of things.
Not true. Some many Chinese are obsessed with western culture and everything western. Oh, and everything Japanese and everything about Japan… including the young kids and their peers. I know real stories like that. So sad when we have amazing 5000 years of recorded civilization history and ancient wisdom.

The camera on the beach in Shanghai is to ensure safety, because the place where you go up and down the stairs once had a stampede because there were too many people and the stairs were too narrow. Many cameras are installed to detect the flow of people. Once there is more than a number of people gathered , there will be management personnel coming to provide guidance, not to monitor you.

Bro talk about London and the surveillance cameras. "Often touted as one of the most-surveilled cities in the world, estimates for the number of CCTV cameras in London range between 627,700 and 942,500." Insane!
btw coming as a singaporean living in singapore where we also rank pretty high in terms of surveillance cameras around, hardly do we find issues with it - only those who are doing something wrong should be concerned of the cameras.
You're right, the main purpose of having so many surveillance cameras in China is to increase the cost of committing crimes, reduce crime rates, and speed up solving cases. Just a few days ago, there was news about a man who tried to rob a jewelry store in Zhejiang, China, and then fled. Chinese authorities managed to capture the criminal in just 9 minutes. This demonstrates the benefits of surveillance cameras.

Harry london has the worlds highest per capita security camera .. Shanghai is approx 5/6 times larger than london but the crime rate is much lower . So , i think the cameras shouldn't bother you . Its only for safety and security purposes, if you dont commit any crime its completely fine . China is actually one of the safest contry to live in .. i hope you would experience some of that. Hope you a great trip
I'm a Chinese from Shanghai. I love the way that the Shanghainese local guide answer the question about the stereotype of Chinese eating dogs. He did not completely deny it. Instead, he said that there can be cases that some people do eat dogs, which I know that there are some places in china people do eat dogs. But it's a statistics game to some sense. The majority of the Chinese people love eating rice, noodles, pork, and etc.
Just like some people in other countries also eat rabbit, ostrich, flying fox (bats to some ppl), civet cats, insects, etc. All that hoo-ha just because some people are just too sheltered within their bubble !😅
There are lots actually, if you search 'First time in China' etc. Lots of international vloggers in fact. I've learned so much from watching these vloggers!
You remind me of my art teacher, Roy Riggley, at Mayfield College in Kent back in the '80s. If social media had existed back then, he'd be doing what you're doing now.
If you’re not doing anything shady or unlawful, why would you care about the cameras. I’d much rather feel safe at all times than living in fear when I’m out and about.
@@Diffidentone likewise cameras at the perimeter of a bank - no it does not stop robbers forcing into the bank, but it serves as a deterrent. same applies to street crimes - no it does not stop pickpocketing or robbery if one wills, but it serves to deter it and/or capture evidence. Either way it is beneficial for the public safety. As to one's privacy, one should realize phones and browsers (ISPs come to that) does the tracking job way better than a physical camera - camera can only pinpoint one's whereabouts, whereas phones and browsers can even predict when you are going to fall out of a relationship, not sure which one is creepier.

The safety level in China is exceptional. It is so safe that even a girl can just walk alone in the middle of the night without having to worry about her own safety. And all the cities in China have the same safety level, this is the best freedom the people in China have.
Have you eaten? This greeting was normal in the 1970s-2000s. It's strange 😳 to say hello like this now! Now you just have to say (hello). In addition, singing in the live broadcast, then you don't have to say (I love Xi Jinping), because in the Chinese fancy him is just the CEO of the Chinese people. So you would say you love your company's CEO! I am Chinese, so I think he (Xi Jinping) manages China better than the last 2 terms. This is the evaluation of most Chinese!

The cameras are to protect the ordinary people but infringe the privacy of the criminals.

The camera on the beach in Shanghai is to ensure safety, because the place where you go up and down the stairs once had a stampede because there were too many people and the stairs were too narrow. btw coming as a singaporean living in singapore where we also rank pretty high in terms of surveillance cameras around, hardly do we find issues with it - only those who are doing something wrong should be concerned of the cameras.
Let's face it in the modern tech era. Most countries have security cameras.
it is safer for women and children. a worthwhile trade off.
The city with the largest number of surveillance cameras in the world is actually, London England !!! Google it yourself 🙂

The police is there for people’s safety and needs (everything like directions, finding dogs, holding kids), especially in tourist areas with crowds, safety is a main concern. They’re not there to control or censor people unless you are the crime. (At the bund when the dude singing and live streaming with loud speakers, the one in uniform came to asked him to lower down not bothering others)

Indeed, Chinese characters or Hanzi for police(警察 ) written on his jacket, is the same Kanji as Japanese for police. Whereas 保安 ( baoan ) is a security guard.
