I just love your channel and how you do your presentation. You are obviously very experienced and are totally hands on! A real Mechanic in a real shop! Thank you for the great quality and info you take the time and effort to make. My personal frustration with the diff of my E46 M3 (Swapped 330CI) is that I want a 4.10 diff to help with the acceleration factor. Which the E46 M3 needs really. They should have at least used a 3.91 from factory IMHO. LOL. The ONLY way to get one that will fit right is to buy it from BMW or a third party maker. Unless you can find one from a E39 M5 or etc. Which I've never ever come across. But because they are the only ones that make the 210mm 4.10 ring and pinion can then charge an INSANE price for one. If I wanted to buy a ring and pinion for a 3.62 it's around $400. Or less for used which are of course plentiful. But the 4.10, 210mm is an insane $1600.00 plus shipping (Canada) NOT installed. I wound have thought that some other company like Ford or Chevy might make that ring and pinion for their cars or trucks with the same dimensions but Nooooo. At least not that I've ever heard of. Anyway if you know of a solution to this insanity please share it. If someone ever decided to make a ring and pinion that size and sold it for a reasonable price I think they could make a killing. IMHO. LOL. Thanks again for the great videos! I watch everything!
Great video. It might be worth mentioning series 1 E24 (75-81) use a different side loading diff (E12 based) with different mounting points (one of the reason I'd like to someday do an E28 rear subframe since side loading LSDs are getting harder to find)

@@DENVERBEERANDOIL Seems to be pretty easy with the exception of needing to fabricate sway bar mounting points. Just one of many projects for my E24.

Right on time. Man its hard to find a used e39 m5 rear end for my wagon.... was looking at "hi diff " out of Russia. They make helical drop ins for 6xx$ on ebay... so far so good in a friends 330.

So this is your friendly neighborhood Industrial Hygienist again. Good job wearing nitrile gloves. Protect your hands! BTW, the e34 also uses a medium case diff - with the exception of the Euro M5 which used the 210mm large case diff. Carry on brother!
When I was making this video I was referring strictly to the case design not the ring and pinion size. Also, you really got into my head with that comment haha I've been wearing gloves like a mofo lol
@@DENVERBEERANDOIL Ah copy that! I have worked in some of the roughest facilities and environments in the country. Have known a lot of men who wish they'd have taken better care of themselves when they were young. Look up Sean and Johan's e32. That's me.
Also just for info, all e34 m5 and 540i models worldwide use a 210mm diff.

The difficulty is exactly the same as this video to be honest very straightforward the second generation kits if you want to call him that do not require any secondary machining
Super helpful and more detailed then any other channel I've seen. I actually am literally waiting on some free time to do this on my e30 LSD. Can I get those flanges from the e30 diff? My other diff is an e28 and I'd like to make a full e30 diff.

Is this any different from a 530/535 e34 medium case diff? I bought my 530/5 with an auto lsd i think a 4.14, i have a 3.91 lsd from a 535 but i want to change the seals and bearings, if i follow this same process would i be able to install new friction/ clutch plates without any issues or should i just change the seals and bearings and leave it as is
Yes this would be the same for those 188mm diffs as well. Same process if you want to rebuild the LSD as well.
whats yalls take on RacingDiffs lsd conversion for e30's, debating buying a lsd to swap, welding it, or getting a conversion kit. ive got an 89' 325is 2.7 stroker so no worries about breaking the diff bc of too much power. previous owner sold the lsd out of it :/
We are currently in an email exchange with them. We are trying to get a conversion kit to do an install and review on.

can this be done from an LSD to an open diff case or no?
Racingdiffs.com sells conversions, we have one and have yet to try it though, hopefully will be making a video on it soon

4 differentials, not 3... small med and large. 168 , 188 , and the 210.... but the e39 and a few others have the "188k" or kompact.
BMW rear ends are garbage no matter if it’s a M car or not. Trash. I’m learning that the hard way. Coming from Ls turbo s Chassis those diff hold tons. I had to try a bmw 330ci and well let’s just say my turbo ls will be blowing any bmw diff to bits. The bmw cars are cool but I should have bought a 370z. I well I like my 330ci so Ford 8.8 fab work and 2 grand for overpriced axles from SLG here we come.
