There's a reason Lugia is known as "The Great Wall" in competitive. Not only its bulk is sky-high and its types have few openings to exploit, but it's also pretty fast for a wall and can often pop off a defensive move like Reflect, Substitute or Safeguard before the opponent has a chance to hit. Then when hidden abilities were introduced it got MULTISCALE, because clearly it wasn't bulky enough already.
10:06 No, we notice your efforts for good video quality. I for one really appreciate it. These games always have good contrast and crispness. Thank you.

Even if we don't always appreciate it, the video quality is peak and makes even these older games feel like newer runs every time
Now I feel kinda bad for watching the Game Boy gen runs in 144p because of slow internet. My other belief was there's not much visual quality to lose, either 😭
0:58 I vividly remember camping in Central Oregon and I caught Lugia during that trip. The aero blast animation and sound effect blew my mind because it just seems so powerful. We all have our little moments like this, which is why we love Pokémon!
As a quick note about the typing - Water/Flying actually was the preference of Lugia's creator. However, the decision was to make it Psychic/Flying for power reasons. Psychic was thought of as the type that projects the most strength when entering Gen II (for obvious reasons if you even looked at Gen I).
I remember as a child playing this game. I always loved having zapdos on my team and lugia aswell in alternate runs. But man did i dislike ho oh. now i know my child brain was functioning well. thanks Jrose, cheers!
Lugia was always the better in battle in my experiance. Love your videos jrose, such a blast back to the past..reminiscing of better, Simpler times. Thank you.
I used ho oh but that's mostly because I played a lot of gen 6 and gen 7 Ubers. Ho oh is by far the best xerneas counter available. Also has a decent matchup against primal groudon if not running stone edge and if you've played gen 6 or gen 7 Ubers you know to have as many answers to primal groudon as possible.
Lugia has a subtle advantage over Ho-Oh in Gen 2. The Zephyr Badge provides a 12.5% boost to Flying-Type moves. Ho-Oh only gets Gust and Fly and has to wait until the Volcano Badge to get a boost to Sacred Fire. Luigi's Aeroblast is boosted right after the first gym. That and it boosts Atk too so that's another point for Aeroblast.
Wow. You really chuck’d that guy… I have no idea why these are so entertaining, but they’re just so easy to watch :) well done. It sounds like you still really enjoy doing it all. Congrats on your success!

Nice, you're almost done with gen 2's legendaries! Now you only need a truck to push and a Snesel with Beat Up to painfully glitch out until it gets unrecognizable and turns back into an egg...
i think youre underrating aero blast in generation two a bit, 100 base power with 95 accuracy is great (especially for a physical move, imagine cross chop with 95 accuracy). the increased crit rate may not seem that impactful, but in gen 2 that means a 25% chance for double damage, which is great! especially with a pokemon like lugia with middle of the road offensive stats. love the vids, keep it up!

While I assumed Aeroblast might be better than Sacred Fire in the previous video due to its enhanced crit rate, I'm also pleased to see that Lugia's sheer BULK managed to count for a lot as well. Almost nothing resists Lugia's combination of Flying/Psychic STAB and Surf, and its hit-taking ability combined with functioning perfectly fine as a mixed attacker I think really helped compared to Ho-Oh relying on being a glass cannon and struggling when it couldn't oneshot something.
@@bigfudge2031 Mewtwo had several factors going for it: higher offensive stats and speed than Lugia as well as bulk coming primarily from HP rather than raw defensive stats. Mewtwo also had DynamicPunch to help it against bulky Normal-types.
