Dennis was my 8th grade music teacher in 1970, then the band was called TW4. Dennis is from Roseland. I saw their first performance as STYX at Marist High School in 1971. They started out as a great cover band and of course the rest is history.
What is truly amazing is that Wurlitzer piano experience he is talking about happened when he was not yet famous. In fact, the almost overnight success of this one time high school music teacher is a blessing of a motivational story itself. "Lady," which DeYoung wrote in celebration of his wife (they were both young at the time of composition, in their twenties), actually is the song which helped to bring him to stardom and hence his and Styx's long and beautiful musical odyssey to transforming the American soundscape with the brilliance of the rising sun, for the rest of the world to admire.
I was about to go to a "new" Styx concert. Then when I found out Dennis was out of the group I said hell no. I'm glad I didn't go, its not the same without him. Same goes for Journey w/o Steve Perry.
Wow, that's f''''ing great, I wish I had been there, born in 59 myself... I got to see Billy Joel in 79 or 80, brain dead can't remember......Super drum Austin TX baby, yeah!!!
This is one awesome live performance by Styx. I once dedicated this song to a lady I was dating back in 2002. I married that same lady 3 and a half years later, and nearly 6 years after I married her, I still love her very much. She is my Lady forever.
Incredible! Fabulous! I saw them twice in their glory! This song brings back such great memories! I love these guys! All great talents in their own rights!
I know what you mean. I lived in Chicago myself and there is something that Dennis DeYoung brings brought to the group. It's a Chicago thing. I saw STYX in 2006, and they were different. I had never seen them as the original band.
omg thats the best live singer I have EVER heard, no joke this sounds like a recorded version in a studio :O All pop artists could learn to....SING maybe
I have seen them alot and they always have put on a great show. Especially Tommy. He moves all over the place Rockin' Out. Nobody can sing this like Dennis.
I was 5 when this song was first released and I just remember being struck by the sound of the Wurlitzer piano. There is a deep and mysterious underlying feel in the opening that I still can't put my finger on. A chilling feeling of that love you have search for, but have not found. Her soul escapes you, yet you still feel her presents.
@AlexSteffek oh lord....this is awesome.....this song and Styx played a big part in my life.....I kneel down to you for just being a part of Dennis and the band and this song....dang............how awesome is that?
Love the song... love the group! Saw them play at St. Xavier College gym and Lourdes HS many times back in the day!!! Thanks for the music! I believe they opened up for BTO at Chicago Stadium and being there!
Saw Styx last night and they are still amazing !! Of course we would all love to see Dennis sing again with the band but last night Larry Gowan was on the money. Great video post....
Song ROCKS!!!! When this song comes on, I can imagine a beautiful medieval woman riding a fire breathing dragon, sword in hand, battling an evil wizard atop a lightning-pounded castle!!!! ⚡🏰👸🐉🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Lady, When You're with me I'm Smiling... Lady of the Morning. Love shines in your Eyes Sparkling, Clear and Lovely, YOU'RE MY LADY. VENUS: STELLA MATUTINA. Venus, THE BRIGHT AND MORNING STAR!
@MrMegaFredzeppelin Thanks BRO!!! I know a lot of people were not happy when Dennis DeYoung left Styx. So it wouldn't be the same without the original core lineup. Glad you like my comment. This was (and still is) my song to my wife :)
@AlexSteffek We lived in Palos Hills back then & I remember my older brother coming home just bouncing off the walls about seeing them live! Still have the "cut out" album ("Styx"). Whatever happened to John Curulewski? LOVED his keyboard work!!!
@GuitarWholesale Man! They all do, It must be a prerequisite for anyone who wants to ente the band. Their Vocals and harmonizing make them who they are. -Stevie B!
Beautiful love song. Too bad u cant find the original studio version that we used to hear on the radio, but this is the closest Ive heard to it- nearly flawless
I have to give Jimmy Young a lot of credit. He is the only guitarist I have ever seen who can simultaneously sing (and very high at that!!) and play a lead riff.
The one and ONLY voice of Styx! Keep touring with cheap imposter JY and Tommy, and you'll keep playing at backyard BBQ's and elementary school auditoriums. That Gowan goofball looks like something from a Cabaret show.
@bethanycat Hi BethanyCat! Styx - Return To Paradise DVD Filmed at The Riviera which was transformed into The Paradise Theater for this event. This 108 minute DVD video includes 17 top hits from Styx i ncluding Rockin the Paradise, Blue Collar Man, Lady, Too Much Time on My Hands, and more A video diary from the "Return to Paradise" tour, Filmed on 1996's Autumnal Equinox -- a fittingly mystical date for a group so concerned with nature and magic -Stevie B!
i think the original percussion instrument during the piano intro part was something other than a tambourine which is what i'm hearing here. anybody know what it was originally?
I wouldn't pay to see Styx either - JY & Tommy are so full of it, it's unbelievable. Unfortunately, they have opened for Def Leppard (one of my favorite bands) for the past few years...
The harmonies at 1:02 and 1:58 should have been in the original studio version. This live rendition is a major improvement, same with the current one with Gowan
@AlexSteffek Hello Alex's Dad. This is Stevie2112Rush, I am the owner of this site and I wanted to VERIFY what you said, Since I am from YOUR AREA, I can say; All of your facts are right on. Those must have been great times to be seeing a band that would represent our area for years to come. -Steve
It's really weird if JY and Tommy truly hate Dennis and wish death upon him, then why do they look like their having the time of their lives sharing the stage with Dennis?
It is true that Dennis DeYoung is the best singer for the Styx band, however, he is the person who also ruined Styx with the brutal musical concept performance. Styx was literally booed off of the stage with the Kilroy was here fiasco.
One of the top rock songs of all time. Awesome
Massive wall of vocals during the chorus. Outstanding!
One of the best love songs ever written
I think this is the sweetest song for and to a woman I always wished someone would feel this way about me
One of the greatest rock n roll songs ever!!!
I first saw them when i was 13 years old, 1975 at the Long Island sports Arena, Long Island NY.
Just a sprinkle of the old days.... Enjoy the memories!!!
This concert just NAILED it.

Man EXCELLENT.He sings like a God
WLS, heard it every day in the mid 70's
wow, what a time !!!!!!

No Body can replace DDY!!!
Great, Great Song- one of my very fav for about 30 years now!
Nobody sings this song like Dennis!

ABSOLUTELY
And Foreigner
You said it, bruv!!!
Wish these guys would settle their differences and get back together. Dennis & Tommy made the band back in my day. Love this stuff.
Unfortunately, it's not going to happen. JY and Tommy made that clear.
My girlfriend and I would dance to their music at the Holiday Ballroom in Chicago in 1971 and 1972. Very cool band!
Wow, that's f''''ing great, I wish I had been there, born in 59 myself... I got to see Billy Joel in 79 or 80, brain dead can't remember......Super drum Austin TX baby, yeah!!!

That is fantastic.she must feel like solid gold!
Incredible! Fabulous! I saw them twice in their glory! This song brings back such great memories! I love these guys! All great talents in their own rights!
With what rolling majesty this song conducts itself! 2:18

@chuckmsp haha! I was there at the Field House. They were the best of times lol !!!!
I wish someone would dedicate this song to me some day :'(
Celest, as i play this video it is dedicated to you.
This song ROCKS!!!!!
This is one of my favorite songs by Styx.
Even though I like the Studio version, the "Live" version is better!!!!
so true! i got to see him play live with just him and his own band play the music of styx, such an amazing show!
Love this song
Dennis DeYoung has such an amazing voice.
Amazing.
He's not shitting you, THIS SONG POPPED OUT AND STARTED THIS WHOLE TRAIN ROLLING! THANK YOU DENNIS!!!!!!
Love the song... love the group! Saw them play at St. Xavier College gym and Lourdes HS many times back in the day!!! Thanks for the music! I believe they opened up for BTO at Chicago Stadium and being there!
One of Rock n Rolls greatest love songs!!
Styx put the power in Power Ballad.
Dennis DeYoung is a true talent.
timeless classic for sure!
G R E A T S O N G ! ! ! Styx, was my first concert ever. It was the Cornerstone Tour, way back in '81, and they were awesome!!!!
:o)
This was in 1996, I believe...I missed it but I did make it to one of their concerts during their 1981,82 world tour...I WAS BLOWN OUT OF THE WATER...
Saw Styx last night and they are still amazing !! Of course we would all love to see Dennis sing again with the band but last night Larry Gowan was on the money. Great video post....
Beautiful Song...On a Great Cd...
35 years later: a class act !!

Lady was made for my beautiful wife Misty..I love you baby!!!!
This is what happens when you put 4 incredibly talented musicians together in a garage, it's not the venue........you get a legendary band....STYX.
Beautiful love song. Too bad u cant find the original studio version that we used to hear on the radio, but this is the closest Ive heard to it- nearly flawless
This song......just GETS ME. My wife Lori...she's my lady.
ya til she leaves ya for another guy.
I have to give Jimmy Young a lot of credit. He is the only guitarist I have ever seen who can simultaneously sing (and very high at that!!) and play a lead riff.
*James Young not Jimmy 😂lol
My absolute favorite song by Styx! However, Styx is not Styx without the voice/legend behind the music Dennis DeYoung.
I second that.
they sound SO much better live
i was his lady in 1980 alan griffin i still love you
I cry every time I hear this song, every damn time.
WOW!
Wow, who sings the super high pitched vocals??, amazing!
The one and ONLY voice of Styx! Keep touring with cheap imposter JY and Tommy, and you'll keep playing at backyard BBQ's and elementary school auditoriums. That Gowan goofball looks like something from a Cabaret show.

-Steve
@GuitarWholesale that would be JY! :)
@GuitarWholesale That would be Tommy Shaw.
Who plays bass in this?.....is it Panozzo?
OH!!! Right away ,sir! Would like anything else? How bout a kick in the keister and go research it yourself!
I thought JT had the lower voice
