Still watching/listening years later. Hundreds of times now, but still gets me choked up...all of those happy and talented young people playing this great piece of music (with Tommy in all of his glory) gives me hope for the future. One of the BEST music videos on UA-cam. Thank you from Canada💙
Not gonna lie, that part got me a little emotional. Not sure why.... because I felt happy for him?.....just thought it sounded beautiful?.... Not really sure why but it made my eyes sweat a little.
So true. Very proud of people like these. The young adults who are obviously some of the best get to collaborate with one of the best rockers of all time Tommy Shaw. I keep watching this from time to time. It never gets old seeing an old scholar sharing his passion with younger people who share that same passion. This is absolutely beautiful!!!
You know I always liked this song when it was a hit back in the seventies.. I didn't quite considerate to be quite as beautiful as it is...until now, being played this way with the orchestra ...it's a really gorgeous piece of work!! way to go Tommy Shaw ... freaking Masterpiece just really really something !! and as another musician one to another, if this doesn't bring a tear to your eye.....
Well, considering he was a 'fetus' when he joined the band (Dennis' term, not mine) he's still just a baby! Seriously, though, he's always looked young.

I'm 50 and I agree. You know that these kids' parents were their age when Tommy wrote that song and first performed it with Styx. It just proves that awesome music is eternal and shitty music is auto-tuned.
Ditto. 60 in December. My first concert I went to was Styx. I think Triumph opened for them. I loved both bands. Haven't been to many concerts. Wish I would have seen Kansas but never did.
Same. This music represents my youth & high school for me. I was 14 in 1977 when it was released. I can't listen to this enough & I'm smiling all the while. ❤
Chills AND crying!!! Seriously one of the most profound and magical performances of a rock/orchestral duet I've heard in my life. Every single person on that stage NAILED IT. And yes, Tommy still has a fantastic voice.
@@Oh_I_Will One take. The musicians learn their individual parts on their own. Then the orchestra rehearses without Tommy. A few hours of rehearsal with Tommy and a performance.

The joy I see in these talented young people and their spirited music revitalizes my creaky joints and old bones. Thanks ever so much for sharing this with me! I loved every minute of their performance!

What a Brilliant bunch of kids and absolutely wonderful of Tommy Shaw and his partner in Styx to do this, along with Roger Hodgson of Supertramp who does the same thing with kids.....nice too see, they have not forgotten where they started, no wonder Styx and Supertramp are two of the best groups
By far one of the greatest presentations of American music by one of our most underrated talented American music prodigy and showman......the GREAT Tommy Shaw! Tommy could be a headliner by himself, but he is a team player and shares his magic with other fine musicians including this talented young orchestra. Thanks for this Tommy! God Bless!

I was about 13 or 14 years old and my grandfather was administrator of Parks and recreation in a little town called Hammond Indiana. And every year styxs has would rent out the Civic center for one week to practice. I was the only person allowed to go in there and watch while my grandfather was working and I was waiting for my ride home. I would practice basketball shots alone and one day, Tommy let me play his guitar and sing one of my favorite songs known as renegade. What an honor that was. And I sucked. But the entire band Dennis Tommy and James had me believing that I potential and did an outstanding job. When my grandfather got his heart attack they were in Hawaii and sent him a palm tree as a good well soon gift. Styxs will always have a place in my heart.
Those kids will remember this forever. I love that Tommy gave those kids a chance and they shined like a supernova. Love seeing kids into music and not craziness in the world.

My wife and I have seen Styx live dozens of times over the years and absolutely love their music. Tommy Shaw has one of the iconic rock voices of all time. First class move to include all these kids in a never-to- be forgotten performance. Just beautiful!
Totally love STYX as well, when our ship was deployed many of us blasted the Grand Illusion album in our berthing compartment... On 8track!! Then we graduated to cassettes. Their range was awesome, from "Babe" to "Suite Madam Blue" that rocked as hard as anyone else.
The little girl with short blond hair in the front of the choir sings with such unbridled joy, it's great to see! I love watching young people who perform music with passion. we need more of this.

I just saw Styx at the Fox in Atlanta this past Friday for the first time. They were incredible. Tommy was incredible... and at 69 he still dances around the stage. I'm 66 years old myself, and this song came out when I was in college. But this rendition is the best I've ever seen and one of the most uplifting performances of any song I've ever seen. Bravo Tommy Shaw and the Cleveland CYO!!! JUST BRAVO!!!
OMG, I was 18 years old when this came out. I am simply blown away and in tears from hearing this redition of a classic Styx song. Thank you Tommy Shaw and all who participated in this concert. Awesome! (and you have to credit Dennis DeYoung for the original arrangment too, he was absolutely the heart of Styx)
Last year I found that someone had dumped their entire record collection in the dumpster at our storage building. There was about 65 albums....Styx, Journey, early Buffett, Beatles, Elton John, Rita Coolidge, Eagles, Meatloaf......I grabbed them all. Probably one of my favorite finds.
The amazing Tommy Shaw. In 1993, Tommy sang 4 songs with our little garage band at a bar called Cha Cha Coconuts in Sarasota, Florida. He only had an acoustic guitar and no mic. It was the most incredible thing I've ever seen. He voice literally drew people in from St. Armands circle. He was extremely generous with us and I'll never forget it. In the off chance that he reads this, thank you, Tommy, for a memory we'll never forget.
Great story. I first met Tommy in the mid-80's. He was nice then , and he's still nice. Success never spoiled him. That's why Dick Clark helped Tommy , when Tommy went solo. The way you treat people *matters*. Glad you have a great memory to treasure. 🌲
5 years later and this performance moves me again on so many levels. The gift that keeps on giving to us all. The fun that everyone is having including Tommy. Not to mention the excellent performances by the orchestra. Bravo, and thank you all! I hope folks still visit these comments to know how much joy this performance keeps on delivering. 💖💓💞
I'm well past the age where I'm ever going to have children, and though I've come to terms with that...if any of these kids were mine, I would literally melt with pride. Be proud...all of you.

One of the best things Tommy can do at this stage of the game is showcasing his songs alongside these cool young musicians. And interesting to see how a rock song translates into magnificent music when the big orchestra is added to it. Their songs always were complex works of art for the rock scene, which made them all so good.

Yeah. That kid was amazing. Now I want to see him and this orchestra hook up with Steve Morse and perform a set of Dixie Dregs songs.
Goes without saying that Tommy is great but who else thinks the kid soloing on the violin is awesome too!? Of course, they’re all great! Well done, kids! 🎻 🎶 👏
Who else? How 'bout everybody.
Yes...and so not their music genre. Most excellent. They all have it DOWN PAT!!
I hope that kid has become a star!
Like a boss 😎
I LOVE the little Asian guy! I predict he will go far in life!
Every single kiddo was great but the badass on the violin was on another level!

64 year old here. Abso-f-inglutely.
Tommy Shaw's voice has grown exquisite over the years.
It really has "seasoned" well unlike many performers.
never lost is gift of GOD
I always thought it was pretty great. It has held up well! ❤️
Exactly! Had the privilege of attending several shows while working on the Rock legends cruise. He sings amazingly live (all of Styx singers are great) and they DO sing compeltely live ! Plus they're very down to earth when you meet them. Tommy is great!
I think his voice has gotten better through the years.
Still watching/listening years later. Hundreds of times now, but still gets me choked up...all of those happy and talented young people playing this great piece of music (with Tommy in all of his glory) gives me hope for the future. One of the BEST music videos on UA-cam.
Thank you from Canada💙
Love the smile of the solo violinist because he knew he nailed it!
Crushed it
Dude, he effen killed it. performance of a lifetime!
Can you imagine what a memory that is?
And he loved it. Priceless!
Not gonna lie, that part got me a little emotional. Not sure why.... because I felt happy for him?.....just thought it sounded beautiful?.... Not really sure why but it made my eyes sweat a little.
I lost track of how many times I've watched this, and it gives me goosebumps every time. These kids sound off-the-charts professional!
I did too.😀
Me too ! Love it !!! ♥️
Yes goosebumps 🤗🥰👍
Right there with you
Truly Anazing! I have watched repeatedly as well
Every person that contributed to this rendition is fantastic. From the arranger to the performers. The world could use more of this.
Well said Smilin
You're so right. Oh my goodness!

Unsung hero: whoever transcribed those solos for the violinist and cellist. Much respect.
I'm pretty sure that the woman conducint did the transcriptions and arrangements.
That was my "wow" moment.
@@rickhicks302 Yup.. Violinist nailed it and everyone knew it. Excellent transcription
Its cool how in the actual synth solo the note range is greater than the violin and it moves to the cello.
leor amikam It reminds me of the solo trade offs that Dave Matthews Band does. I’m thinking of Eat Too Much in particular. Guitar, sax, violin
This version of the song is amazing, but the smile on these kids faces says it all. The happiness comes through the video. Well done Tommy Shaw!!!
The kid on the violin is amazing
I imagine that he must have been nervous. But when he gets to the end of his solo he is smiling❤
They all were amazing

Your comment is “F ing “! Nice profanity

Such a great band and of course they are another band ignored by the Rock and roll Hall of Fame.

Well, considering he was a 'fetus' when he joined the band (Dennis' term, not mine) he's still just a baby! Seriously, though, he's always looked young.
Never a big styx fan...but damn, this is freaking awesome, great job....would love to here this live.

These kids did a great job. If they could only appreciate what an icon Tommy was to our generation.
I was the same age as these kids when I first heard this song. Released in 1977. I'm 60 yrs now. . . . 😳
I'm 58. I second that sentiment...😳
I'm 50 and I agree. You know that these kids' parents were their age when Tommy wrote that song and first performed it with Styx. It just proves that awesome music is eternal and shitty music is auto-tuned.
I am 59 years old and love this song
I just saw this for the first time the moment I sent you this reply! & if you grew up back then you realize how great this really is! HBT!!!
Crying lol...Sure.

And on a side note I lived in a house in highland Indiana that they used to rehearse in the basement before they were big.
