- VIDEO DESCRIPTION - This painting tutorial will take you through easy to follow, step-by-step instructions on how to draw and paint this exciting surreal image of "DRAGON DREAM" with acrylic paint. You'll learn simple drawing and painting techniques that will help you to create this detailed magical beast emerging from the smoky fog into a young boy's dream. As the large mystical creature wraps its expansive wings around the small child to protect him, the boy reaches up to touch the nose, as if to say, "Thank You". This thought-provoking image filled with emotion and fantasy dreams will come alive as the fog drifts through the atmosphere and adds a sense of magical movement to the ambiance. This exciting image is full of motion and an inspirational narrative that is spawn from a young child's imagination. The dragon symbolizes supernatural power, wisdom, strength, and hidden knowledge, perhaps these are the qualities that the boy searches for in his dreams. You'll learn how to draw the shape of the animal with scales, horns, wings and spikes in an easy way that will provide proper proportions allowing it to have believable shape with form. You'll learn how to paint the smoke with translucent paint in a manner that will create dimension and airiness in the atmosphere with a simple layering and blending technique. Using quick gestural impressionistic painterly brush strokes, you'll learn how to define the small details, which will give the image a realistic 3d quality. You'll learn how to add dimension to the wings, head, neck and tail using strategically placed highlights and shadows. Use your imagination and customize this to resemble your favorite fantasy beast, perhaps you paint a word in the smoke, or change the colors, maybe you put a unicorn or Pegasus coming out of a misty forest landscape. You could change the boy to a girl or have a baby dragon under the mom's head. The point is to just have fun with it! With the look and feel of a fantasy illustration storybook that has an inspirational narrative to it, you'll be able to paint this image with a carefree easy style. You'll have fun painting it and you'll learn some valuable lessons along the way that you can utilize in future work. Using only 3 brushes and 5 colors we'll create this conversational masterpiece with a magical atmosphere and charming story. So, let's get painting and let's get sipping!

Canvas: 16x20 stretched primed canvas
Brushes: 1/2 inch flat bristle (large), #12 round synthetic (medium), #1 round synthetic (small)
Acrylic Paint: titanium white, mars black, deep yellow, burnt sienna (rust), ultramarine blue
Other: white chalk, palette, cup of water for washing brushes, paper towel for drying brushes

STEPS:
1. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint background with black and blue
2. chalk - Draw dragon outline
3. #12 round brush - Paint base coat of dragon with rust and yellow
4. #12 round brush - Paint dragon highlights and shadows with yellow, rust, black and white
5. #1 round brush - Paint scales on tail and neck with black, rust and white
6. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint smoke with navy blue (made in step 1), black and white
7. #1 round brush - Paint facial features with black, yellow, rust and white
8. #1 round brush - Finish dragon with black, white, yellow and rust
9. #1 round brush - Paint person with blue, black, rust, yellow and white
10. #1 round brush - Sign with black

A tip for the smoke, what really helped me was dilute the gray painting with your brush. Blot your brush on napkin and then do swirls like the smoke from a match is dancing. Then, go back over with diluted black paint to make it both strong and faded in areas, making it look more natural 🥰🥰

What a trainwreck for me! Hahaha I wanted to do something for my nephew and he loves dragons. I watched the video and thought "I can do that"....hahaha....oh no, I could not. I struggled with the scales and the smoke for two days. Painted over, tried it again, painted over, tried it again. Finally on my third attempt, I got a finished product that doesn't look like a 4 year old painted it.....I'd say maybe a 10 year old. Oh well. I loved the process and I kept at it until I finally finished it. BTW my fail had zero to do with your instructions. Those were great. I was just very scale and smoke challenged. Haha

I have been trying to learn to paint for about a year now, more often than not, I am not pleased with the results. I know it takes practice but it also takes a good teacher which I feel you are. I am so glad I came across your channel, I have watched so many of your videos and love your teaching style. Thank you for these tutorials. I will be trying this dragon painting soon as a bday present for my husband, he plays guild wars, he likes many of the mystical creatures in the game. I absolutely loved watching you paint this and you have great technique. It's so beautiful but I think if I tried this it'll look like something out of a children's book and probably far from being noticed as a dragon. I'm more of a sketch/shade artist so I'm not as good with a paint brush but I'd like to learn 😝

I'm a fan of the Inheritance cycle by Paolini. The 3rd book though is Brisngr. I think you're referring to the 2nd book which is called Eldest. Wherein there's a discovery of a red dragon just like in the painting of this great video 👍

Michelle a dragon is considered to be a reptile making it officially an animal regardless of being mythological or a creature that actually existed. Hope this helps.

@@michellethepainter. you can Google it and check it out but if it has scales like a lizard or snake it's reptilian. It would also have pupils like a snake as well. I just thought since you didn't know how to categorize it while painting it I figured I'd try and help you out on it. Lol It's a beautiful painting. You should do another but in all fantasy colors! Blues, pinks, purples ect. With stars and fairies in like a lush garden with willows and pastel color flowers. Sorry you got my fantasy brain on overdrive!! Lol I was going to go take a nap but now I want to paint!!
