That is soooo crazy, i can't really wrap my head around how insanely cool that was. With one freaking stroke he painted a hole 2 toned body with scales and all (yeah yeah he stopped some, but he never lifted the freaking brush). Soooo good!! Thanx for filming it, love from Sweden!
It's exactly the point of the technique to not lift the brush, and keep steady, otherwise there will be a break in the body pattern and it will not look natural, just like how you would not lift your pencil half-way through writing the number 1
A lot of it is in loading the paint onto the brush to get multiple colors, the other part is the start and stop dragging of the brush to make it look like scales. In the late 90's I came across a lady teaching one stroke painting, but it was mostly florals, leaves, petals, that kind of thing.
I know this comment was four years ago (I'm a bit late) but I reckon it's (sadly) because people these days don't have a very long attention span and can't stay focused on a 17 minute long vid. That's only soome people tho
Thanks for posting! I am just mesmerized by this artist. I've watched a number of videos of him painting dragons. I appreciate that you also showed him loading his brushes. Many of them don't. It's interesting to see how he gets the colors he does.
The kanji written under the dragon is 守護 in a very nice cursive style, meaning "Protection/Guardianship". The quality and techniques are fantastic, personally I think the gold streak he drew over the dragon to intend clouds or so gets in the way of appreciating the dragon a bit, but it's done well so it doesn't bug me too much
I was thinking the same thing, my mother used to oil paint and she always told me to never get cheap with the cost on supplies especially brushes. She said the quality will always shine through.
I had exactly the same emotional journey. Given that this shop is in Nikko, my guess is that this person most likely began apprenticing when they were 12-14 years old and studied with a master and now has the ten thousand plus hours put in that allowed them to become an expert. I’ve found that rule does apply in reality. The thing they don’t tell you about those hours is that the first 8,500 hours are very difficult to get through. The doubts, the self-criticism, the cringe-worthy attempts at greatness. It’s no easy task and becoming free with my art and learning to allow it to be authentic tic is one of the very hardest things I have ever done.
when i was a child, may be 8-10 years old, i can always see the artist in park drawing this dragon, and sold the picture, so many artists in so many parks doing the same picture. so i'm not surprised.i think this skill is just normal, by the way ,i'm from china
What kind of brush is he using that it is that large called? Also what substance is he putting the brush in to make it hold flat? What’s in the bottle? What type of paint? What type of paper?
I'm not an artist - But he seemed to put some sort of oil on the brush at the preparation stages. Maybe this did something to the brush to make it last longer?
Hm, idk but it could be that this is calligraphie paper and the black colour (in the bowl) is classic calligraphie ink that he uses as a base. He put the sumi brush in the bowl for a while. 1st for the moist layer and 2nd it´s wiped off at the bowl.so you got that flattened brush and be able to put the colours on the top...i guess thats all
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS....I LOVE JAPANESE ART AND DRAGONS, THANKS FOR SHOWING HOW YOU DO THOSE DIFFERENT BRUSH STROKES. I LOVE IT HOW YOU USED MULTIPLE COLORS ON THIS WIDE BRUSH, WHAT FOR A NICE EFFECT.....TFS....:)
Wow wow wow. I like the technic of your brush movement towards the tail end of the dragon. It is so so beautiful, I like to buy a dragon art from you. Same size. Where can I view your work for sale on the internet?
Does anyone know what kind of brush he's using for the body? I have Japanese Sumi brushes but the bristles don't align like his when it's pressed down.
I could be wrong but it looks like ink is the primary medium (the black, red, and gold) and watercolor was the addition to the brush to create the effect on the body
This looks amazing. With things like this, I always wonder: what were the circumstances, that lead to one developing this technique? In germany, there is a Story about the creation of the Brezel: in medieval times, there was a baker that lost the grace of his Lord, who gave him a task: "bring me a baked good, through which the sun does shine thrice, or you'll be executed" and gave him a Deadline. The baker experimented, until he found a way, the form the Brezel has to this day. But before he could put the dough in the oven, his wife accidentally spilled them into her washing lye. The baker was devastated. He didn't have enough time to make a new Batch, so he put them in the oven and could only pray that they were not completelly ruined. So, he brought them to his Lord, and, to his surprise, his Lord was very pleased. That's how the Brezel came to be. I wonder, if things like this painting technique have similar origins.
*A lil jealous how he just skipped the process of drawing all the scales while I'm here with my pencil on day 3 trying to finish up this dragon I'm working on lol*
Best way to create textutres is to ignore the details, just understand the fundamental properties of that texture. Your observers aren't going to notice a lack of microscopic precision.
I like to try I love dragons but I do not have steady hands, to do that is needed a lot of practise Amazing drawing. Japanese artists very skilful in details and handcraft
Is it acrylic painting you use, and btw can i get you talent hehe, love japanese chinese korean well just asian dragons and that, always been facinated by the asian culture, so PLZ could you be so sweet and awsome to make some turtials step by step videos, for os amatour noobs can learn how to make dragons as you do, i have seen some of you videos YOU ARE FREAKING DAMN AWSOME, wanna steal you draw/painting talent hehe
Yeshuamysavior1 he forgot to paint the jaw and teeth, nostrils could of been more clear. it's a nice painting but not perfect. flawless technique though.
When he took that brush and was faffing around with it i was like 'whats he doing being extra'? then he put it on the paper and made the serpents body i was like "WOAH".
I love all dragon art. In Japan there are many great artists whom have many ways of doing their pictures.

Yeah yeah he stopped, like for a fraction of a second while he turned the paper. Isn't black paint part of the body?

why this video doesn't get 10+ million viewers???? this is talent. hopefully youtube recommend this to others

ok i also love his drawing style, dragon painting is my passion. thanks because i was able to learn more
Please can you give me his account
Whaaaaat!!!? That's nuts man!
The most insane thing about this is that the artist makes this look incredibly easy.

The best thing about this, being an artist myself, is seeing the quality of the brushes. :-)
I was thinking the same thing, my mother used to oil paint and she always told me to never get cheap with the cost on supplies especially brushes. She said the quality will always shine through.
I bought one of these in Niko 20 years ago. Glad he/they are still painting
Sorry... I don't recall. But it's way more beautiful than I paid... and I'm cheap! Lol
@xTheTorNando Last time I was there (about 3 years ago) the small ones like he's painting were about $25. I have two, one from 2009 and one from 2018.
Omg those golden details make it pop so much. I love everything about this!
Thanx for this video. What an incredibly talented artist. I was simply blown away by his amazing work.
artist: draws dragon in under 17 minutes
me: *doodle's intensify for over an hour* didn't finish
Me: Okay, I’m gonna draw tonight!
Me after seeing this video: *gets depressed* nevermind then..

Gotta love the old-school “airbrush” work @12:13 using the most ancient tools for doing so.
i like how they draw honestly
it's so smooth and organized lmao idk the word for it
elegant?
This is stunning!Absolutely beautiful artwork!♥️♥️♥️
very beautiful . this young artist has what all good artist's have and that is patience.

Wow! A master at work!
Ur upload schedule is great
That move with the brush to make the tail was just nuts. I wonder how long it took him to figure that out?
It's a technique that's been used by people for quite some time.
What kind of brush is he using that it is that large called? Also what substance is he putting the brush in to make it hold flat? What’s in the bottle? What type of paint? What type of paper?
How does this magical brush not run dry? O.o
I'm not an artist - But he seemed to put some sort of oil on the brush at the preparation stages. Maybe this did something to the brush to make it last longer?
Rebecca Stephens the brush for the scales he used is called a sumi brush
Hm, idk but it could be that this is calligraphie paper and the black colour (in the bowl) is classic calligraphie ink that he uses as a base. He put the sumi brush in the bowl for a while. 1st for the moist layer and 2nd it´s wiped off at the bowl.so you got that flattened brush and be able to put the colours on the top...i guess thats all
He's probably just using Chinese ink for the black, gouache for the colors and water. The rest is technique.
Most beautiful Japanese dragon 🐉 😍

Where do I get a set of brushes that have everything i need to start painting ???
GOD BLESS !!!
So how long you drew that for?
Oh..just 17 minutes
Is there any reason we don't see any of the dragon's other feet or legs? it is his claw holding the pearl no?
Hey what paint is he using ? Is it water colour or oils
Wow wow wow. I like the technic of your brush movement towards the tail end of the dragon. It is so so beautiful, I like to buy a dragon art from you. Same size. Where can I view your work for sale on the internet?
What does it say beside the dragon? That is so beautiful!
very nice art. your style is very good.
Does anyone know what kind of brush he's using for the body? I have Japanese Sumi brushes but the bristles don't align like his when it's pressed down.
I managed to get a friend in Japan to order a double dragon picture and send it to me in the UK. They are genuinely beautiful.
What type of brush did you use?
I swear, artist in Japan have secret powers that we don't know about! (btw i love your art)
Its called the power of sight. In the west we see mainly through eyes filtered through an unconscious ego driven mind. my lord.
I want to do one of these. Anyone know what kind of paint i need to use?
I could be wrong but it looks like ink is the primary medium (the black, red, and gold) and watercolor was the addition to the brush to create the effect on the body
Maybe...Sumi paint?
T mmmm
Waouh very nice, 😮 congratulations
What kind of brush he use?
What's the type of paint he's using?
I wonder how did he do the scales thats awsome
awesome dude. i'm very impressed about the negative space highlighting and the scales o.c.
Wow such an amazing artist
Anyone know what type of paint or paper is used?
Your table is so shinny, I want to play with it, looking so relaxing. And you do art freely. This is surprising.
Great work I like the style and your technique.
ok. i like the same style
Which brush is used?
Is he using watercolors or heavily diluted acrylic?
Very Beautiful Dragon!!!
Great
It is amazing to the fine details.
I am painting dragons and tigers in Japan. Draw while bleaching the cloth.
AMAZING JOB!! 👏👏👏👏👏💕💕
Seriously can I buy one of these masterpieces?
Wonderful, Thankyou for sharing this insperational talent 😊🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Is it Kaido?
What kinda paint is that

This would be so much more pleasing to watch if it were zoomed in.
I used a magnifying glass and it really helped.
What is this art style called?
The artist's shirt says TH. Does it stand for Takenaka Hanbei? :3 Because that's the Takenaka Family Crest right in the Middle of it.
I like to try I love dragons but I do not have steady hands, to do that is needed a lot of practise Amazing drawing. Japanese artists very skilful in details and handcraft
