  • In this video I'm using a new method (for me) of starting an improv quilt. I'm trying small practice quilts to narrow down on a design idea to make a quilt for my step father.
    This will be Part 1 in my 'A Quilt for Dan' series which I will continue over the coming weeks and months (he'll be getting the quilt for Christmas 2024 so it will be all wrapped up by then!).

    I have needed to play with the creation idea process when doing piece work projects with paper. What helped me to see it... and remember it was to take a photo. It really helped me to see it from a distance. I have to check myself this way when I am painting as well.

    I like to do a "quilty survey" if I am making a quilt for someone I am not really close to. Fave colors, modern or traditional type of person, hobbies, fave things to do, etc... Getting pics of their décor is a good idea! I never thought of that!

      A survey is a good idea! I have got a room photo for a few folk I’ve made for as I usually make throw quilts - so I am thinking of it as part of their decor rather than a blanket for their bed I guess.

    I love the last one with the grey background and the white and light blues. I still love the dark teak big piece that you showed in the beginning. I think it would be fun to just scatter little bits of that teal in it and then maybe use the teal for a boarder? You get my mind thinking lol. keep doing what you do it inspires me. ❤️

    I'm not a fan of 2 color quilts, but I really like 3 color quilts. The grey, white and "teal" would be my choice. I think this is going to be easier than you first imagined, once you get Dan's feedback. For throws, I usually just make the "back" a more simple version of the front. I'm looking forward to see how this projects develops.

    I went back and looked at Dan’s living room and beautiful artwork. I think you are spot on with the gray, teal and white. You could ad a lighter gray and lighter teal. There is also a little beige or ivory. I love your block with the larger sections! I hope you will show your progress! Uncle Keith’s artwork is amazing!

    I really like the last one you laid out, gray background with white (or low volume of some type), but to me, it NEEDS some contrast, like a bit of a bold color or even black. That’s just my thought, but I do lots of scrappy, colorful, prints, anything goes, so serene low volume is mostly out of my realm.
    It’s really sweet of you and very thoughtful to put this much planning into the quilt and even consult with him. After doing all that, I think the quilt will be a success, no matter what you and Dan decide.

    I like huge gray background with light squares. But I really like the idea of putting a but of the dark aqua in it also. Maybe as a fringe on a couple blocks or a strip of color crossing a block. Can see it in my mind but can't get it on paper

    I love the grey and teal. I personally find the white just too brash. One of the off-white or taupe would be my choice. This was a fun and inspiring video for me as I'm a brand new quilter, who has already decided that improv is the way forward for me.

    Hey, Kristin!
    I’m really drawn to the last ‘sketch’ quilt you made- with the varied shades of teals. I also liked the idea of including the sample ‘white and gray ‘grid with diamonds’ in the pattern. The various shades of teal that you showed while working on the floor layout would work well with your uncle’s artwork. These would also give a nod to the teal/blue chair in Don’s space without competing as I think the darker teal might(?).
    As always, I’m really looking forward to following your process to completion, including the quilting design you use.
    Thank you, and stay well!

    I like modern looks that are off centered. I’m trying to imagine what the quilt would look like on the bed v hanging on a wall. I think I’d try to have the main grey background broken up with similar greys for a subtle interest. Then on what would be the bottom left of the quilt (on the bed view) about the level of a sleeper’s knee, I’d add the patches of interest (grid, whites, punch of teal) Im looking forward to seeing your process. I’ve been thinking of sending a good friend a set of placemats that are different but coordinating. If she likes one well enough, I’ll make a throw to match it. I like the idea of smaller projects 💕

    Good luck. A simple quilt to me would be one solid color on one side and another solid (or the same solid color) on the back. Then all over simple line quilting. The binding would be the same color as the top. A coworker asked me to put batting between two solid white king sized bed sheets and do fancy quilting all over the quilt. The binding would be the same white. I didn't even want to think of doing such a job on any of my antique home sewing machines. I don't own a long arm quilting machine. Trying to quilt two bed sheets together (with batting between them) could damage most sewing machines.

    • @ScrapFabricLove
      @ScrapFabricLove  Місяць тому +1

      Interesting. I’m not sure why it would damage a sewing machine though? I’ve seen a duvet cover onto batting before and I often use sheets for backing fabric. Never had an issue myself.

    I'm excited to watch this quilt evolve - you've given me a lot to think about regarding my own process.
    On another note, I appreciate the way you're so matter-of-fact about your dad and Dan. My own kids have a gay dad and he is an integral part of our family even though I've remarried.

    The only quilts I’ve made specifically for someone else are for my grandson. I showed him pictures on Pinterest. He liked spiral blocks. He likes pink, and seemed to like polka dots, so I used those elements as a guide, but otherwise the design is based on my own ways of making quilts. I think he likes it. I made a quilt based on a Minecraft character for him some years back but it was a more generic design than usual for me. If you follow your aesthetic, keep to your stepfather’s color palette and simple geometric shapes the result will be fabulous.

    Interesting. I tried this with my OH: curves, circles, linear, squares, triangles? What colour? Mixed colours or colour wash? With key examples, lots of trying and he simply didn’t have the visual language to get anywhere. Stalemate for 1 year after which I made a navy and grey whole-cloth quilt with big stitch quilting. And now I am making a colour wash blue quilt as a wall hanging for him. Hoping to have clearer preferences from grandchildren. I love the designing for one person process.

    • @ScrapFabricLove
      @ScrapFabricLove  Місяць тому +1

      Yes it would be much harder if the person couldn’t visualise- that makes sense! Thankfully Dan is very design oriented so I think he’ll be able to give me some useful thoughts 🤞🏻

    This was fun. I really like your pillow right behind you, mainly grey with the few diagonal strips of fabric. Would that be an option for Dan's quilt, something minimalist along those lines: mainly grey but with a few off-center angled soft colors? Just a thought. Whatever you make , it is going to be lovely. And I love your close family!!!

    Hello thank you for the video today. The survey part of it was good. The colors I like mostly that you showed. Was the one square that had the darker turquoise, a cream colored, with some gray? I think that would be a good color scheme. For your family members.
    Because it has neutral colors with a little bit of pop of color with the darker turquoise. I'm anxious to see how you're going to be constructing this quilt. I really liked the quilt that you showed a little while ago. Where you sewed three layers of fabric. And then flipped it over so that backing was already sewn in? I think I saved that one. and I'm wondering if you're going to do this quilt the same way? Because I would like to see it done again. but maybe in a different pattern or or if you're going to quilt the pieces first. Sorry this text is long but I really am interested in seeing the process so looking forward to your next video.❤

    Hi Kristen, I just turned 67 last week and you remind me of my lot younger self. I like to bend the rules with my sewing, more times then not I don’t want to follow a pattern and I love to up cycle old into new. I started watching your videos for the first time today. I love your approach to thinking outside the box. My vote for Dan’s quilt would go for the grey color scheme towards the end of your video. My daughter-in-law just gave me a lap quilt for my birthday made with a few of my favourite things & colors, (daisies & dragonflies)I’ll treasure it forever! Hello! I have watched this video several times and I think your quilt would be best if you stayed very linear & tried to match his living room for color & simplicity. Maybe follow your Uncle Keith's choice of color in the pictures and not go to far outside that color selection - very subtle greys, teals, blues, beiges & throw in a ringer or two of navy & a few darker shades of grey. It's only my opinion - I could be wrong but it's also what I like.
