I may be a week behind you. I will a small recovery quilt that must get finished, I'm sewing on a brand new machine so we are just getting acquainted. I can't wait to see what you create.
Thank you! This is right up my alley...not too much notice, not a ton of planning, just a framework to work within. And best of all, nothing to buy! Greatly appreciated at this time of rising prices.
I have my fabrics and started making units. I’m using fabrics from my daughter’s face masks she wore to school in 3rd and 4th grade. I made so many masks in really fun fabrics I couldn’t just throw them away. I did buy a white on white for the background, but it’s hard to resist when you work at a quilt shop. I’m very excited to really get into the design.
I don't know if I can be "loose" enough yet to quilt along. Trying to be more like you and Dave's Craft Room and watch you both intently and with admiration. Really looking forward to seeing what results and would love to see what participants produce. I know I'll be really envious.
The videos will be here whenever you want them so no worries if you don’t feel like now is the time - but I bet you might surprise yourself if you gave something like this a try 😉. Thanks for watching!!
This quilt that you made is by far, hands down, my absolute favourite. And I have three quilts on the go but I will be watching. I need to let go and just make a free style quilt. I need to stop being such a knob and just do it and embrace the improv. When I finish these quilts I’m making I’ll be straight on an improv with all the bits I have flying around! Whooooohooooo
Woo hoo! Yes I bet you will enjoy it more than you think. I’m hoping 🤞🏻this one can show that it isn’t really complicated or scary to wing it…I mean no one has ever been killed or maimed in my sewing room and I work this way all the time…everyone walks out just fine 😂
Ohhhh! I love this idea. Im not sure about a quilt along, but i might manage a quilt behind. I love that you have freedom to play with your scraps but you still stick with guidelines to have a cohesive finished project. Im not really drawn to completely loose crumb or scrap quilts without any cohesive element.
Glad you like the concept - and of course there is no time limit for finishing. And yes it will be loose but with enough ‘boundaries’ to make sure it doesn’t look like a mess!
I like your process. You began with background, because you had enough. Then fabrics that coordinated with memories. Your accent fabric was a surprise, and I'm excited to see how these will come together. Keep up the interesting work.
Hey, Kristen! I LOVE Angie’s improv quilt! I made my version with Debbie Maddy fabrics-yes, I played it safe! The quilt sandwich is still waiting for me to quilt it. At the moment, I’m committed to a couple of charity quilts, and I was thinking that I might be able to squeeze this one in. On second thought, I think that this will be incentive for me to finally quilt my Debbie Maddy quilt! But I will follow along with and keep this one on my growing personal quilting to-do list. Thank you for your continued inspiration! Stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦
Looking forward to watching your QAL. I'm in the middle of a couple of quilt tops in my to-do list so don't want to stop right now, but I'll be watching and maybe do the quilt later? Can't wait to see what you and others come up with!
My sewing machine just broke! But when my new machine is all set up ill be back around to do this one for sure!! Im a confident beginner as youd say, haha, but improv is something you can always learn more about. New ways of dealing with odd shapes, new joining methods, ect, i can hardly wait!!
@@ScrapFabricLove it's not fixable unfortunately but I got a new to me 1958 singer 404 machine that I'm super excited about!!! I'm still cleaning it but so far it looks and I'm doing my first test sewing today!!
I'll be following along, but maybe not actually participating. Got too many WIPs I've got to get done -- including your scrap quilt-along from last year! (I spend about 4 months of the year on the road without a sewing machine which seriously cuts into quilting time!) Certainly interested in your improv method. And appreciate your "use what you have" and "follow your instincts" approach. Look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!
Gosh yes not sure if I could handle 4 months without a sewing machine but you are probably refreshed and ready for it when you get back! Thanks so much for watching!
What a great idea to help people get more comfortable with improv quilting! I'm in the middle of two sewing projects right now (I usually only do 1 at a time) so I won't be "doing" the quilt along but I am certainly interested in watching the videos!
Thanks for watching! Obviously I knew doing it at such short notice it wouldn’t suit everyone but I thought I’d give it a try anyway! The videos will always be there if you want come back and do it another time.
I'm working on a quilt like this already am happy to see your quilt along. I can certainly use your guidance. The quilt is feeling "off: to me, which happens every so often when I've been working on a quilt for a while. Your ideas have already helped me. Thank you!! I'll be following along and quilting along with you but I don't have that much time to work on quilts so I'm sure you and others in this sew along will finish long before I do. I enjoyed watching how you have selected your fabric for this quilt. This will be fun. And in the end so pretty. I love the end result of quilts like this and I love the freedom of improv. My life is very structured and scheduled so improv is a nice change of pace for me. Thanks again.
Sounds like you are a step ahead with your quilt already in progress! Hope the series can help get you unstuck in a small way. Thanks so much for watching!
I have 3 projects on the go, so won’t start this right now but will absolutely follow the QAL and give it a try later this year. Love hearing about the process and how you make decisions for doing an improv quilt. Thanks for sharing your process.
Great Surprise. I need a bit of motivation and this might be it. I want to make a sofa quilt for friends buying their first home. I'm going to look thru my stash and see what i have for a background and go from there. Thanks for the ideas
Nice idea! I have several blocks I made a couple of years ago for a block of the month quilt, and I ended up really disliking the design and I wasn't crazy about the fabric, so I never put the blocks together. These blocks would probably suit me much better cut up and spread out over an expanse of background.
I can’t wait to see what you do with this quilt. I hope I’ll receive an epiphany of a theme or design that I can express with my scraps. Where do you find inspiration for your wonderful quilts? I do plan on joining you. I am at the beginning of designing and cutting a t-shirt quilt for my grandson, but I hope to work on both.
Glad you can join in! I think my inspiration comes from the fabric itself. Kind of looking at a scrap or larger bit of fabric and thinking what could it turn into? That is usually the starting point. Good luck with your t-shirt quilt too! I have yet to tackle one but it’s on my list of things to try for sure.
I would really like to do this and am certain i can pull the fabrics from my stash, except maybe the background. Will get to work and see what i come up with!😊
Perfect for me )). I have bins of random pieces in general color divisions. MIGHT have enough white, definitely enough greens or blues, so I could showcase little bits of contrast as the sparkles. I love love love the random "black" background of the cross quilt behind you. Trust instinct )) Handful of these, handful of those )))
I did your last sew along, I learned a lot and it was fun. I ending up donating it to our guild charity group. It will be fun to see what others come up with I am unable to participate in this one as I have 3 or 4 projects on the go and am overwhelmed now.
Hi Kristen, fyi, the link to the October 2021 video is missing from the More… section of this video. I found the video and rewatched it; it’s a lovely quilt. 🙂 As someone else said, I’ll be “sewing behind” because life is very busy for a while. I made notes for the fabric requirements. I’m auditioning fabrics, and have settled on a large piece of tone-on-tone white for the background fabric and strips. Still deciding on the accent fabric and the other fabrics “that speak to each other.” Thanks for the inspiration and guidance!
🤦🏼♀️ thanks! I’ve added the link in now! Thanks for pointing that out! Love that you are going to attempt this one even though you have other stuff on the go. I did rather spring it on you!
Remember Newton's law for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction...I am the reaction to not liking orange. In the past few years I have grown to LOVE orange...and bet I have more oranges fabrics than two or three others put together. LOL Funny thing, I never hated it before, but I was just sort of okay with it...then a quilter on a forum made a quilt she called Bushels of Oranges, and I have loved orange since then. She used a bit of black and turquoise as accent colors. It was gorgeous.
That is how I store everything but this biggest pieces. I put the rolls in colour coordinated baskets - helps keep see everything and I find rolling easier than folding 😂. I talked all about this storage system in my sewing room organisation videos from last year if you want to scroll and find those.
@@ScrapFabricLove Thank you for responding, as it happens I found your blog about your sewing room organisation; definitely will work for me as I don't want to buy any more containers! I also always roll my clothes when travelling, we do a few trips o/s a year! 🤓
I definitely want to give this a go. I have lots of wee bits and pieces that I love but they won't fit in any traditional blocks. My only concern is the quilting. I don't have a long arm machine and all that negative space will need something. Will you be offering suggestions for novice walking foot quilting?
Sure I can give you some ideas. I used a walking foot on a domestic for the first one I did like this and I think it worked out well. Glad you can join in!
I picked up a medley of fabrics on a trip with my daughter a few years ago. I think I will narrow down the fabric choices and probably put them on a single background… Do you hear the wheels turning?
If you go to the words under the title that say ‘see more’ the video description will drop down and you will find the link for the video I mentioned called ‘Modern Improv Scrap Quilt ‘ there.
What do you think? Can you join me even though it's short notice?
Yep… got bin of bonus units to use…. And a good scrap bin!
Yeah 🎉🎉

This is just what I needed! I’ve done lots of improv but avoided my scraps. I’m trying to embrace the scraps in 2024 so I’m off to my sewing room!

Thanks 💕
