@donnarichey144 it is only the second example where the backing isn’t quilted - but the batting is and the back is secured row by row with the joining. In the other two the back is quilted row by row before it is joined to the next row. Hope that makes sense!
@@ScrapFabricLove yes I see how in the second method you add the backing pieces as you join the sections that have quilted-together batting and quilt top . So what happens to the backing? Is it never quilted?
No it isn’t fully quilted - it is secured across the back by the next join. You can add quilting lines either side of the ditch for example if you want more quilting on the back in that method but not as intricate as what was done on the individual blocks. Every method has a trade off. For this one the unquilted back is the trade off for being able to have fancier block quilting. Hope that makes sense!
@@ScrapFabricLove I have not tried this method but sounds good. I wouldn't have that big roll inside the throat of the machine to work with. I will try with a potholder and see. Thank you for your info.
Thank you for dropping this video. For the last eight (8) months, I have not been able to make myself set down and sew. I love making quilt tops; but, I don't like to quilt them. I can't afford to pay someone to quilt them for me. Plus, I can't afford a long-arm quilting machine (and I don't have the space to set one up anyway ). What you just showed me (in this video) may be the answer to my problems. I just Subscribed to your channel. I'm a lady U.S. Army Veteran. A group called Visiting Angles is going to help me get to and from the VA Hospital next month (on that day I am not allowed to drive myself anywhere). I have been thinking that they would know which Veterans really need (and want) a quilt. If they don't already have quilts in their vehicles, they may need some. I might get to use a lot of my stash if I find a good reason to make quilts. Helping Veterans is a very good reason to make quilts. You're a very special Helping Angle to me.

What a wonderful thing to do! 🥰. I hadn’t thought of that; I’m retired, on SS and trying to figure out the best way to quilt in a small space…her video answers that. You are a rock star - thank you for all you’ve done serving our country.
My mama used to make quilt tops and put them up on a frame for us all to quilt. She put the cotton batting in them and they were so warm. In the winter we used these instead of having heat on. I remember after my sister got married, I used to have a quilt around me, I’d stand in front of the heater with my quilt open. My quilt would get warm, I’d wrap it around me to hold in the heat and run and jump into bed. I slept warm all night long.
Thank you SO much for the whole quilt demonstration because that's when the light bulb went off for me. I am trying this as soon as i finish my current quilt top.
This is great for those of us without easy access to a long-arm (or long-armer). I also love that you can get a kind of "bonus quilt" on the back with different fabrics. Nice clear instructions!
I have watched your video twice as I committed to making a large queen sized quilt for my son's mother in law and have been looking at QAYG methods especially the joining methods. This is GREAT thank you relieves the fear. Can't disappoint in-laws :)
This is perfect. I bought a tiny 30$ sewing machine and it doesn't have an arm long enough (or motor powerful enough) for regular quilting. This method will be great for me to get rid of all my scraps. What a great video.
I put away a quilt for my grandson because I wasn't sure how I wanted to put the strips together. This method is a game changer for me. I am going to try this so I can finally finish his quilt. Thank you.
I have done both the first method (with a serger but don't recommend using it) and the third ...especially in adding borders to an already quilted quilt. I used a joining stitch to secure the batt to the seam, then proceeded with my decorative stitching. Great video!
Watching and will watch again-this is the answer to my quandary of not having the space to assemble batting, backing and a quilt top let alone quilt it 😳! Love the multicolor backing too. I did a “roll” once on a queen size when I first learned to quilt about 30 years ago . Yikes….so I’ve kept on with lap quilts. Now I am ready to try your method! Thank you 😊. (I love my old Pfaff). I asked you a question about using twin needles, a short while back (on one of your videos - not sure which one). Came back to let you know that it worked well by sewing on each side of the 'ditch' (so, effectively 4 rows of stitching) which created a sort of double row frame on each square. I used a small zigzag over the ditch to join it to the backing. I'd post a photo, but, it seems I can't. Thank you, so much for this video. It was the only QAYG video that, actually, showed how to add the extra pieces and made any sense. It's the first quilt I've ever made and, thanks to you, I'll be making many more ❤ Bright blessings 🌞

Omgosh!!!! Thank you for this video!!! It will help me not to bunch up the quilt in my sewing machine. I think my life will be easier as a quilter now lol. Love your videos.
This was a very timely video for me. I started a Christmas quilt three years ago with hand embroidered blocks in the centre and pieced blocks around the edges. I wanted to quilt it myself, so I started quilting each panel or block as each was finished. I am getting to the stage where I was starting to think about joining blocks and adding backing and this video has certainly given me something to think about! Fingers crossed it’s finished for this Christmas!
Kristen ! I was very inspired by your method and I modified it a little bit to work easier for myself. Here is what I did and see if you would consider to try. I used this order: Join row 1 with row 2 Quilt row 1 Join row 3 to row 2 Quilt row 2 Continue like that until all rows joined and quilted. The reason for this: order: not to join a quilted row with a non quilted row for the reason you mentioned, they might have different dimensions after one row is quilted and one not. What else I did: I first basted the tops together with a red color thread to make sure all the important points were matching and nothing shifted during the sawing of all layers. The basting I did was using a long stitch setting and sawn at less than 1/4 inch so it was easy to remove after the rows were joined. Basting can be done by hand too. I consider this step important when you have blocks with multiple points that are important to match exactly. In my experience, when sawing multiple layers things tend to shift and is nice to avoid that. I would appreciate your comment. Thank you for your videos 👍🤗
I’ve done QAYG but always with sashing! Game changer!!! So glad I stumbled on to your channel. I also quilt on my embroidery machine but sometimes you just want to try a different style. Thank you!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the random white bits instead of big pieces of white. I don''t HAVE to match white or find it all at once. ))))) Subtle color shifts are gorgeous!
You are my hero!! Thank you so much for this method-I have been using it and enjoying it so much…I’m working on a fall quilt now and this method not only saved time, but I really think I have had much less waste with my backing material as opposed to other QAYG methods. Again thank you so very much!!
Yeah! So glad it’s working for you! I think it saves waste on batting too as we can use all those leftover bits without having to piece them together. Good luck on you fall quilt! Thanks so much for your lovely comment!
This was a GAME CHANGER!!! Thanks for posting it! I have been trying it out and indeed it is a sound method. So excited as now I can avoid the expensive long arm quilt services and do it all myself!! I will add an IMPORTANT NOTE though, based on my experience trying it... I mistakenly followed it to the letter with a QAL project I finished, only to find in the final assembly process that as I'd done each SECTION in your method, the final blocks then could not be put together one after the other as they ALREADY were in fact "completed mini quilts'' in and of themselves... argh! I had to take out ALLLLL the stitching and quilting and start over. SO... what should be noted, is that in a quilt like that with multiple different pieced blocks that get sewn into sub sections, you must skip to the end and consider each sub section as ONE UNQUILTED BLOCK, and THEN add those sections aka "blocks" together in the quilt-as-you -go method above... Then it will go together marvellously as planned. Don't make my mistake!😂 Thanks again for this great method and sharing it!!
This is brilliant! I love making quilt tops but always have trouble getting the layers to match and stay together - hours of checking and re-pinning will be a nothing but a memory . Attaching batting and backing has always been a nightmare but no more!!! Thank you!!
Thank you so much for showing me this. I absolutely love this. I have a very big quilt and I'm going to use this method to quilt it and finish it up. I will look and see if I can find a place to send you a picture of it when it's done. Again thank you very much for sharing this.
Thank you! This is a great idea! I struggled with a 65" x 65" QAYG quilt and rolling up the sides to add the 4th row. This is much simpler method. This was my 2 ND quilt as a new quilter. Don't want to do it the old way again!
Wow am i thrilled that your video popped up. This is just what I'm looking for. Thanks a million for all your sharing. 🌻 Watching you from South Africa. 🌻
Just found your channel, new sub here. Thank you, for sharing these methods. I have som etimes sewn smaller projects using similar methods. Larger projects have been more challenging as the throat on my machine is 5 1/2 × 4 1/2. I always trying to figure out how to keep the bulk down. On the last quilt I sandwich all three pieces together, hand basted the center parts. Then sewed a seem down the middle. After that I sewed from the center out on each side in an attempt to keep the bulk put of the way. The quilt is done and turned out well, but I'm looking forward to trying these methods more thoroughly in larger quilts. I'm happy to find another Scottish quilter, as half of my ancestry is Scottish, I'm in Minnesota, USA. I also enjoy watching vids from The Last Homely House, another excellent UA-cam channel in Scotland.
I have not tried this physically, but I have done it in my head. Crazy how it is so obvious now that I've been shown, by you. It did take the whole quilt before the penny dropped. Thank you so much for sharing
I have quilted in my life! A few years ago when looking at someone else’s video, I thought what you actually made. I was like, why doesn’t she just add the batting in, quilt it with lines, or not and then add another row. Thank you for having the same idea and putting into practice!! : )
I actually found this method from other folk on UA-cam who were making quilts with sergers. I am still confused why I don’t see this method more often - or why the sergers were involved in the first place 🤷♀️
LOVE THIS. I just decided to make a king size quilt for our guest bed and it didn't occur to me until I got the fabrics that I absolutely do not have the space to lay out a king size quilt sandwich for basting 😂 so this will be perfect. Thank you so much!! You have a new subscriber 😁

My husband and I are putting together a T-shirt quilt. I think using the quilting individual blocks and joining method will do the trick. Also, the Join and Flip should be great with any material that tends to stretch.😊 Thanks
Wow this is great ! If you had only put this video about 2 weeks ago , it would’ve been the answer to my problem! We were having a fair in town , the quilt top had already been sewn , I needed batting got it , had the backing to it ! So I attach the batting, I think I watched every quilt video on Pinterest & UA-cam 😑❗️ I attach the backing , use quilting pins to hold it , this is where my problems begin ! My quilt pattern is “ drunkards path “ I have a regular sewing machine 😮 , attached a walking foot , then I marked with a chalk the area to be quilted , rolled up one whole side of quilt , just trying to get it in my machine was a battle ! I did finish it , put the border . Took it in on Friday , only to be told the quilt judging was done on Thursday! What , I was ready to cry , the ladies , collecting crafts , crochet work & canning said “ you can leave it with us , see what the judges think !” I got 2 nd place , but after this ordeal, I’m thinking it maybe my first & last quilting project!
Congratulations on your 2nd place! Obviously the judges don’t think it should be your last quilt! It definitely can be a battle getting a big quilt through many sewing machines - good for you for getting it done!

This is brilliant! I love making quilt tops but always have trouble getting the layers to match and stay together - hours of checking and re-pinning will be a nothing but a memory . Attaching batting and backing has always been a nightmare but no more!!! Thank you!!
Yeah! Glad it’s helped. Let me know if you run into any questions with it - I’m planning a follow up Q& A video soon.
Thank you so much for showing me this. I absolutely love this. I have a very big quilt and I'm going to use this method to quilt it and finish it up. I will look and see if I can find a place to send you a picture of it when it's done. Again thank you very much for sharing this.
Oh good - glad it was useful. Good luck on your quilt! Hope it works!
Thank you! This is a great idea! I struggled with a 65" x 65" QAYG quilt and rolling up the sides to add the 4th row. This is much simpler method. This was my 2 ND quilt as a new quilter. Don't want to do it the old way again!
Hope this method works better for you! Good luck with it!
I love to Quilt as you go. Thanks for showing the different ways to do it.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
How to attach blocks to each other
Wow am i thrilled that your video popped up. This is just what I'm looking for. Thanks a million for all your sharing. 🌻 Watching you from South Africa. 🌻
So glad it was what you needed! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for subscribing! I’m originally from Canada myself but my Mum was Scottish and I’ve loved her 20+ years so far. 😀
I have not tried this physically, but I have done it in my head. Crazy how it is so obvious now that I've been shown, by you. It did take the whole quilt before the penny dropped. Thank you so much for sharing
Hope you like it when you try it!
Fascinating. Can’t wait to try this method. Looks perfect! Thanks
Have fun with it!
Thank you for this illuminating video! Your explanation makes perfect sense to me! Yay! I’m going to try it.
Thank you for this video. I am definitely going to try this method on my next quilt.
Thank you for showing this method. I knew there had to be an easier way! Merry Christmas!🎉
So glad it helped! Good luck with your quilt!!
Kristen, watching you from Australia! I want to thank you for all your very informative videos. I’ve been watching your channel for a long time now but never commented before. You’re so down to earth and just get on with it! I love that. You’re inspiring heaps of people who have trouble with large quilts and your other research posts are always interesting. Thank you 😊
Thanks so much! So glad you find something useful in the videos and thanks for taking the time to comment! 💕
I'm a visual learner so thank you so much for the examples of doing QAYG different ways! Sometimes I find the sashing strips, take away from the quilt design and just doesn't go with the quilt I'm working on. Thank You again, these are so cool!!
Glad you liked it! Thanks!
I'm so glad I found you!! I have very limited space, and these methods are perfect. I have a quilt that I want to make for my granddaughter, and I was wondering how I was going to quilt it. This solves that problem. Thank you for sharing.
So glad it solved your problem! Good luck with your quilt!
This made my day, thanks ever so much! I cannotuse it for my thick crumb squares, but so many other things!
Looks so easy. Thank you. No overdone process. I think I can do this as my space is so limited. I make tops so far and can’t finish anything but now I can. Thank you for sharing.
Hope it helps! I can’t stand a process with too many steps either!
Thank you. I’ve watched so many videos on this and still get lost but this makes so much sense to me now thank you
So glad it makes sense!
This is so encouraging. I’m so intimidated by starting to quilt and this method seems so accessible. Thank you!!
Oh good! So glad it seems doable. Good luck with giving it a go - let me know if you have any issues.
I’m new to quilting and did enjoy your video. I plan to use to method when I move to quilt-as-you-go construction. Thanks.
Thanks glad you liked it.
Thank you so much. I have avoided QAYG forever because it was so fiddley. I will use this method.
So glad you liked it - I felt the same about the other methods! Hope this works for you.
Garhering my scraps now for my first QAYG! Thank you for a very HELPFUL and easy to understand video!
Glad you liked it! Thanks!
Many thanks for this wonderful version of the QAYG method. I shall be using it from now on. It is exactly what I have been looking for.
Yeah! So glad it was what you needed! Thanks!
Wow. That 3rd method is my favorite. I’ll definitely be trying it next time thanks for sharing!
Glad you liked it!
I’ll try that last one first!!! I’m a bit rusty so that assembly will be quicker for me. Thanks for the reminder about the weight.
Excellent instructions. Thanks so much from a Canadian in America !
Thanks so much! From a Canadian in Scotland! 😀 🇨🇦
Ha ha an English woman watching from Australia 🇦🇺!!!😊
I haven't tried it yet, but I know I'll love it (the last method you showed).❤ I'll let you know more when I'm into it. Thank you!
You made it look so easy.thanks..I wish I had seen this before I made a hand sewn farm quilt. I didn't get it quilted because of the money it cost. Darn I could have done it this way and finished it. Great info. I have 2 to make and they Will be finished off.
Glad it was useful. You can use this method next time!
Super helpful and fun. Thank you. I actually have a long arm but for smaller quilts or just a change of pace, this looks great. xx Karen
Thank so much! QAYG is my go to for anything large.
Thank you for sharing how to sandwich the quilt blocks. I have to try this method.
Hope you like it when you try it!
Thank you for the video! I have been using the “Cover Strip” method by Monica Poole. Very happy with it, but the Cover strips are additional work compared to the method you introduced in your video. I plan to try this and see how it works for me! Thank you so much!😊
Hope it works for you!
Thank you, lots of options for quilt as you go - no excuses now 🙂
Thanks for watching!
Great methods, thanks. I’m inspired to make a quilt.
Wow! This is really a game changer. Thank you!! 😊
Thank you so much! 💕💕. I’m planning a follow up soon to answer folks questions on this method so do let m know if you have any! I really appreciate the support for the channel thanks so much!
Thank you my dear! This is very good advice. I appreciate it. I have moved to another location. My things are still in storage. Can't wait for the day to get started with all my projects! Be safe! Many blessings from South Africa🎉🤗🤗🤗🌺👋👋🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
My husband and I are putting together a T-shirt quilt. I think using the quilting individual blocks and joining method will do the trick. Also, the Join and Flip should be great with any material that tends to stretch.😊 Thanks
This is a wonderful tutorial - thank you so much.
Gotta say, I’ll be trying this! Thank you!!!
After watching this video, I see more ways to make quilts without buying batting. Thanks.
Fab!
I like to quilt as you go and find this method very interesting, thank you.
Fabulous tutorial! Thank you so much ❤
Thanks so much 💕💕
Mind blown...... thank you for a great video!!
@@ScrapFabricLove don't you quit now. Try the next one as a " qt as you go", that's what I'm going to do. I'm just starting back since I've had remodeling done on my house. Now I have to put everything back in shape again. Don't give up !!
Just found you today! I am a beginner...looking forward to trying this.
Hi! Thanks for watching! Hope this method works for you!
That's it! I love it. Happy New year!!!
This is fabulous. I just found your channel and I’m so glad I did. I am gonna try doing this method of quilting as it’s so hard for me to wrangle a full sized quilt to get it quilted nicely. I’m too short 😅. So I’m a new subscriber.
Welcome! So glad you liked this - I hope it works for you!
These methods are nice and the quilt is reversible
Fantastic, remarkable, awesome, etc.. I can't wait to try this on my next quilt. Now, I don't have to restrict myself to baby or lap quilts.❤ ❤❤
Yeah! So glad this can help you make bigger quilts - hope it works for you!
Ive been doing something similar to this, lately but i do whole 10 inch blocks at a time . Works for me
Thank you so much. This is brilliant for me as I love to quit as I go.
❤❤never have seen anything like this awesome❤❤
Have fun with it!
Really love this idea! Can’t wait to try it!
The things you teach and share are wonderful..Love Love Love
Thank you!
This method still amazes me to this day !
Thanks!
Thanks so much! 💕💕💕
I definitely going to try this. I don’t have a long arm machine and would like to make bigger quilts.
Genius! Thank you! I am definitely going to try this. I can’t afford to send out my quilts to have them done. I like the fact that you’re working to the left and won’t have the bulk on the right.
Glad you liked it! Have fun trying it!
Thanks! This may encourage me to quilt!
Yeah! Hope it works for you!
