Here's a cheeky tip - if you have a render hungry animation that comes to a stop, pre-compose those layers that are no longer moving and add a time-freeze to it. Huge time saver.
Not specifically rendering, but for previews; disabling some heavy effects like Glow, Blurs, etc helps to skim quickly through the timeline. I always disable the layers which aren't my point of focus and it helps incredibly. Awesome one @Black Mixture. I love your style, especially the GIFs xD.
incredible video! i’m building a high end i9 system but this vid helps w the software optimisation so i can get all the performance out of my soon to be new beast rig
There are so many UA-camrs talking about this stuff, many with huge subscriber bases. But NONE as good as you at NOT WASTING MY TIME! Entertaining too. QUESTION: It you have a fast external Thunderbolt 3 SSD, would that be put to best use for media or for a cache folder?
Thanks so much Vince! I'd recommend using your fastest drive for your cache. Your cache will be written to and accessed more often than your media files by After Effects, so having a fast drive for that will help keep your previews speedy.😊👍🏾
Thanks! You made this just in time (for me)! This greatly helped me pull the trigger on buying a new PC for editing as it made me feel confident that what had I put together was going to meet my needs. I may have gone a bit overboard on some specs (i9 10 core CPU, 64GB of RAM (2 slots), NVIDIA RTX 2080, 512 GB SSD + 2 TB HDD) but I only spent $2,000. Keep bringing that solid content!
@@itz_yeastic For the specs he cited, that _only_ makes a lot of sense. But then I guess maybe it does not include the money spent on monitors and shit.
Not sure either, but youtube hasn't been promoting our vids. Make sure to turn on notifications so you won't miss on any uploads. I appreciate your support tho 🙌🙏
Check Intel Gamer Days for some dope deals! gamerdays.intel.com/ His recommended specs apply to a laptop about the same. Obviously you won't get the same GPU performance, but that isn't as important for most aftereffects work. Make sure the laptop has SSD storage (NVME is best) and at least 16gb of ram!
So...I've got a Ryzen9 5950x 16 cores-32threads(4.9Ghz turbo), 1T M2,1T SSD, 3090FE and 128GB RAM...my after effects is running SLOW AF... I am currently rendering a video in Media Encoder and it use up to 48% on gpu@35 degrees I'm going to watch the rest of the video..maybe you have some tips&tricks on how to make it go faster.
New build 20 July 2021 with ryzen 9 5950x after bios after all settings the adobe after effect is very slow, ram 64 motherboard Asus strix B550-E, GPU Rtx geforce 3060 xc....What can I do?? ??
Alright so I'm confused, I built my pc it has an i7-7700, Nvidia Evga 1060, 24gigs of RAM, 650 power supply, 970 Evo 500 gig SSD and After effects was freezing on me with 30 shape layers. I even set the preview res to 1/4 and purged? Why is it struggling to create a few position key frames?
Hi. Thanks for the video. I have a problem. My laptop has 16gb ram 1TB nvme ssd and 6gb 1660ti gpu. But when I work on after effect and when I check the preview (animations) onlu run cpu. Gpu not working(not go higher that 8% in perfomance chart) how I fix it?
Bro i am planning to buy Predator Helios 300 2019 with gtx 1660 ti and i7 9750H. Is it good enough for intensive graphic designs on Adobe After Effects?
I was hoping to hear some tips for rendering, because I have a GTX 1080Ti and an NVME harddrive, my program works just fine, but the renders take countless hours for a mere 4 minute video. This video did not touch up on that so it didn't help me at all.

Amazing video, even tough i work in AFX for a long time, there's really a few videos that explains how to set up and optimize the hardware and make a good usage of the things you have. Congrats and I'll be taking note of a few things, thanks!
Thanks Sabás! Seconding this!!! Your project will not lose anything important and in most cases, you'll see a performance boost once the cache gets rebuilt.
I just ordered an omen 17 with a i7 11800 and rtx 3060. This combination gets some of the highest after effects score. Im finally replacing my msi gt70 which i got like 15 years ago future proofed at the time and its just not able to keep up anymore. It has a 4 gig gtx 675mx which has been an amazing gpu for the time ive been using it. I also got ram to upgrade the omen 17 to 32 gigs of ram from 16.
Press caps lock when rendering. This will turn off playback as you render and cuts render time in half
great tip, thank you for sharing!
@@BlackMixture Thanks for the video!
Not really. It still has to do all the same calculations. The only time this works is if you are using a real garbage compute or (ugh) a laptop.
@@MAGAMAN yes, me right now.. not a bad laptop, just old.

Will purging do anything to your project? Will you lose anything potentially important
Not at all. Purging just deletes the cached frames that the computer already saved for faster previews. It doesn't mess at all with your project.
