Thanks for sharing this. When I was researching a good build for 2D animation and After Effects, there were basically no videos on what parts to pick. Always insightful to watch your videos.
I recently added 32 gigs of ram to the 16 I already had for a total of 48, and it’s crazy to see the performance difference. I’m not sure how I ever did anything before. I thought 48 would be overkill but I’m constantly using 40+ while in AE
Been using 48 gigs of ram as well and did the same upgrade as you and the improvement is huge! I'm personally going to upgrade to 64 or 128 since ae is such a ram hog
For my projects, Premiere + AE take up to 60GB of RAM from 64GB. So I think upgrade to 128GB is normal for heavy AE users.

@@mohamedalimezghani9747prolly super late but you can generally install ram after the fact in a laptop. You might find 32gb ram laptops being way more expensive but you can find a good deal on one with 16 and then spend ~100 to buy another 16gb stick and upgrade depending on the configuration. Do your research first but I’ve added ram to two laptops already and it was pretty straightforward
Having a dedicated m.2 SSD as an AE media cache is a huge help. I set aside over 400gb for it. It's especially nice when you're bouncing between multiple projects.
Can you tell me how this works? What do I have to do? I’m new to pc and trying to run AE the most efficient way.
@@Prevailmedia_ the settings are under Edit > Preferences > Media & Disk Cache. You want to pick a location on a high speed ssd that has a lot of free space.
Once it's set up, AE will cache frames that it renders for previews to cut down repeated rendering. It will even keep that cache between sessions.

I have a dedicated fast SSD that I cache to yet it often has to re-render parts of the timeline even if it’s played it back before.
@@yungcrossfit I do not. I really want my playhead moving right away when I hit the space bar. Having to recache some part of the comp is common, but it still should go much faster if you're using a dedicated media cache. Also be sure that older versions of AE aren't eating up your cache space.
Ben, have you seen Pwnishers community 3d render challenges? You should run a similar community motion graphics challenge.

One thing to consider nowadays regarding GPUs is After Effects' multi-frame rendering option. It gobbles up VRAM, even my 3080 can't keep up if I add something as simple as Red Giant's Optical Glow on an animation.

***A note to anyone out there who wants to get into motion graphics but is on a tight budget***: I used an M1 Mac Mini - the absolute base model which can be purchased for ~$600 - and did 2d motion graphics/explainer videos professionally and didn't really have any headaches at all and it handled it surprisingly well - especially after Adobe started rolling out the Apple Silicon optimized apps! The only reason I stopped is because my company bought me a beastly computer and I would rather keep my work stuff and personal stuff separate anyways.
FX Console works on Apple Silicon since May I believe, as with pretty much all plugins. The only plugins I use that don't run on Apple Silicon are ones that don't run on Mac anyway.

@@rakhanaufalakram4603 unfortunately I can't show you any of the explainer videos I made because their all the intellectual property of the company I was working for at the time, but I took a look at the channel you referenced and they were about like that - maybe a little lighter on backgrounds and effects. I still think you could make it work, but I would definitely recommend buying as much "computer" (ram, processor, rom) as you can. If you're trying to save some money though, I think the M1 computers are still worth looking at!
saying that after effects is a single core app is outdated since the last update, after effects now uses multi frame rendering using all the cpu cores you have, and that applies for rendering and preview performance

I have a Mac Studio base model M1 Max and the M1 native version of After Effects is super quick. Shame about the other M1 ports - I'm looking at you Illustrator and Indesign.
My Razer Blade (2019) was borderline unusable in After Effects due to terrible interface lag, so I am pretty burned again on PCs now.
Yeah I would not expect a gaming laptop to handle any professional type After Effects files. A Mac Studio is going to be great if you only using it for creative field work. Your gaming laptop is going to run Adobe programs just as well as your Mac runs games, which is: Terribly.
(I wouldn't call a laptop a PC, in the same way I wouldn't call a F150 a semi truck)

After effects pisses me off, i first started selling on fiverr i was only working with a i3 and 8 gb of ram it was painfull to work like that but, got some money to upgrade to ryzen 3600x and 16gb of ram that still was slow but better that started to piss me off soo on the next upgrade ( the pc i have today) i bought a ryzen 5900x and 32gb of ram and still the playback speed is not that good enough even with me optimizing after effects, the playbackspeed is the laggy playing back a video at 1080p and 60fps with some effects, and what anoys me the most when i work on after effects ram is constantly at high % on task manager soo i don't know if i upgrade to 64gb or jump to 128gb ram , it can't be that ryzen 5900x is the problem since i saw a chart saying that was one of the best preforming on after effects soo it has to be the ram 32gb might not be enough

Great vid BUT something that always is overlooked is: get the fastest RAM, and go BIG on it when you do a lot of AE work. Im talking 128gb and at least 3200 mhz. It will feel so much snappier!

This is a myth. Pick the best for your motherboard and CPU. Some cap at 2667hz and you can't get any use of the 3200hz... read the compatibility first. Also 64gbs is more than enough. You won't ever touch 128gbs unless you're running a server

@@rachmanda4094started at V22. and both preview and final. But if you had to choose between less faster cores than slower multiple cores go for the first.
Wait, I'm confused... When you say keep project files on a separate drive, do you mean .aep files or your 4K footage?
Obviously I see that you have a separate drive for each of those, which is gangster as fuck, but which one is more important to move to the external drive/what should the setup be for someone with only one external drive?

By project files, I mean after effects files and project assets :)
Cache can also live on that same drive, but if you wanted to take it to the next level, you can seperate cache onto its own dedicated drive.
So I would always recommend the following.
C: OS & Apps (around 500GB to 1TB)
D: Project Files and Project Assets (around 1TB to 2TB)
E: Cache (around 256GB to 500GB)

Shame there's no mention of Apple Silicon. Obviously considering the subject it makes sense, but I've done some really impressive work on a cheap M1 Mac Mini which was able to achieve realtime preview with Saber, something my Ryzen 7 workstation couldn't handle. My M1 Max laptop is amazing for AE and I recommend it to everyone looking for a mobile workstation.

Ben, I am surprised that more cores did not equal faster rendering with multi-threading being out for After Effects since the Fall. Prior to the introduction of multi-frame rendering, After Effects used a single core, making clock speed much more important than core count. However, MFR changed that by allowing multiple frames to be rendered at the same time... as long as the system has sufficient resources (available cores, memory, and GPU time / VRAM). I don’t think this was mentioned/covered well in this video so a bit confused on the statement that more cores don’t effectively mean better performance. Maybe you can clarify?
Hey mate! You make a good point. We did talked about how a 12-16 core ryzen cpu is the sweat spot for speed vs dollar value, but I guess it didn’t make the cut.
There is a lot to cover and we tried to simplify it as much as possible. Another awesome point to make is that MFR doesn’t run multiple instances of after effects to give you that speed gain (like rendergarden or background renderer) so it used a lot less RAM then previously used plugins that everyone used to rely on pre MFR.
Single core still rocks AE though, and with each additional core, you will start to exponentially loose the speed increase in MFR. Hence, 8-12 core is still best for AE for 2D motion designers who are on a budget.

This is funny. I almost have this setup, BUT! It doesn't matter how strong your PC/Mac is. Mostly the problem is AE and how ridiculous the app is. It's totaly unoptimized. Folks on adobe community forums are somehow protecting the issues of the AE which gives me wtf questions. Once I asked if AE can render multicore, why 20% cores from 16 (ryzen 9 5950x)? Answer to solution? Prepare project and open AE as a multi instances? What? That is the solution? Making crazy render settings and render sequences in more opened AE windows. What kind of solutions is that?
Other issues: nvidia drivers. Latest 520 someting causes green screen and sometimes dead screens and PC freezing, I had to go back to nvidia studio like 470xxx. Answer from community? Turn off every hardware acceleration. So why do we have to spend crazy money, imagine to buy Puget systems for mental prices and AE will barely use all that potential power.
Caching is nightmare. Other apps can make snappy cache render into storage but AE no! They have to smash everything into memory so you have to spend fortune for at least 128 GB ram if you want to do 4k. If you you have problem? Solution: turn off multithread rendering. Again, wtf? I am pissed, that they excusing 'Premiere is different and it can cache, blablabla' so if Premiere can normally cache into storage, why AE can't? Those lazy bastards.
Having strong GPU in AE is a joke. You can run in on MB integrated graphics and you will be fine, because again in community they tell you to swith to Mercury software rendering.
Why Maxon with cinema4d+redshift can does so many updates last years and pushing forward. Hardware is used on max and AE still sucks. If you look at the community like a normal person, looks like I am not alone. I mean, who are those people developing such a Frankenstein? It's like shaning apple but dead inside. Terrible.

*The last time I used the silicon Ae, FX Console didn't work. They may have fixed this by now, but if you use that it may be worth trying out the older, pre-silicon AE to see if that works enough for you.

I found the SSD scratch disk was the single most impactful improvement. Thanks for the info. Based on your video I am getting the 3070 RTX and the 5950x. I already have 128GB of ram but running the 3800x which runs hot. So interested to see how this impacts my workflow. Mostly I want to not have to wait forever for AE to prerender the timeline as I edit.
I ended up getting the 4070ti but did not really see a huge improvement in rendering the preview for animations in AE. Bummer. Thought it was going to be my holy grail.
@@daxcastro Hey man, I'm planning on getting the i9 13900k with your exact same GPU. I currently have a Phenom from 2009 and 8GB of DDR3, it's extremelly painful to wait for the pre-renders (basically like 30-60s for a one second pre-render on a 3D layer).
What performance gains do you think I could potentially expect? I want to spend my time animating not waiting for the pre-renders lol, Thanks.

Keeping your system disk and project files disk separate was always the mantra, since the 1990s. When people started working on laptops (in particular MacBooks) and self-contained, smaller computers like iMacs, I was surprised to see how people seemed to begin ignoring that credo. So, it was nice to hear confirmation that I wasn't mad for thinking it should still be the same. Interesting information.
I’m so glad to hear that I’m not the only one who follows this rule. It’s definitely an integral structure to put in place in a production environment.

@@abramjessiah not everyone can afford a gen 3 or gen 4 nvme m.2 ssd. Sata SSD’s or Sata M.2 SSDs will still bottleneck with general 2d or 3d work. Most people don’t realise the difference between the SSD tier set unfortunately.
Idk if its a stupid question or not but separate as in kept in different partitions within the same SSD or do I have to get a second SSD for it?

I mostly do editing work and personally have been waiting on the next generation of Ryzen CPUs to come, they claim a ~20% boost to performance which I'm really excited about, I can't wait to upgrade my ol' trusty 3600X and get that juicy Ryzen 9 7950X

I have the same system! Well, with a ti version of the 3080 and different case. Oh yeah, I just remembered this PC build you got is very similar to a video titled "🔥 ULTIMATE GAMING PC 🔥 Ryzen 5950X + RTX 3080 Ti | Gaming PC Build 2022" by PC Builder. He goes into layman's terms explanation on how beefy this $3-4k PC is with content creation (video and 3d rendering) and gaming. This is the same video I copied my current new PC build.
So given that you have that machine already, do you still have settings you need to tweak inside after effects preference for it to be optimized?

Check out Puget Systems stateside. They similarly make (and support!) custom machines for AE, PP, or whatever else you need. I used to hand build machines for my studio, but switched to using them last year and couldn’t recommend highly enough. Good, honest folks who make great, affordable, and useful builds.

I'm concerning which machine runs Affect Effects more efficiently, and worth for money, PC or Mac? To my knowledge, Mac could not enlarge the desktop panels while we're working , that would a barrier for us to view such many details in each panel of After Effects, but PC could, right?

Well to be fair you don't really build a mac. You just take whatever options Apple gives you and that's it.

@@savethedoodle mac system are extremely restricting, which is why anyone in vfx, animation or video, should consider custom PCs so they can do things like upgrade and grow their rig along with their career, things like added storage, increase RAM capacity etc etc.
but for a clean, simple, no brainer solution (and especially for mobile systems) macs would be the best option for any designer or content creator

I've upgraded my CPU which had a Xeon 4 cores for one with 14. With 96 gb of RAM it made all the difference in the world in AE, with the multi frame rendering. M2 drives and a 16 gb P5000 make my system faster than it ever was. Still, it all depends on the type of projects you work on. I work on very heavy animation projects with huge PSD files and I see how much it slows down AE.
Does 96 gb ram make render/export faster than 64 gb ram? A lot or just a little bit?
How come IMac m1 best for that all with minimum of everything? Could you advice ?
i have a i7 8700k with 32gb ram and a nvme drive , i dont have a graphic card im using the integrated gpu... i basically can do alot of stuff in after effects when selecting rendering on 1/4.. but some stuff reallyl takes long i wonder if a better graphiccard would make a difference...

This render-done sound got me confused; I thought I was rendering something.
I have 128gb of DDR5 and after effects still takes a shit on it. That being said, the more RAM the better.

I have 3x M.2 2tb SSDs in my system...One for OS...Another for active projects and the last one for CACHE and a NAS for long-term storage. Noticed a big difference compared to working directly off my NAS. The logic is you don't want to be reading and writing to the same disk at the same time, but maybe that's just my theory!
When you get into very large volumes of data there's a certain amount of overhead in just finding and accessing the data you want. Working off a NAS puts a lot of that overhead on the NAS. I made the mistake of going with a DAS and my system really bogs down copying project folders.
@@DeanRockne Are you saying it could be faster actually working from a NAS? I get what your saying as I guess the NAS would take some load off your CPU but I can’t imagine it would be a lot. I only get 100mbps on my NAS where as my SSDs R/W at 3500mbps…And I only ever have the active project on my project SSD, it gets moved to my NAS when client has signed it off.
@@Oldyellowbrick It really depends on the hardware. Keep in mind a 10gbe connection is 10,000mbps, so just being on a network doesn't mean you can't hit those speeds. It would require a serious NAS with SSD acceleration to get in that 3000 range. Personally I prefer keeping all my projects in one RAID volume for redundancy and cleanliness.
Where the overhead really becomes and issue is when you're dealing with large volumes of image sequences. I might have upwards of 100k files in one project. So you can imagine how running a backup on 20TB of that can suck.
@@DeanRockne yeah that’s exactly why I had to do something as I originally got a NAS because I have a MacBook Pro and 2 PC render machines. I work mainly on my main PC but on projects you sometimes need to distribute renders separate rather than network rendering. But as you mentioned I was getting insanely slow speeds with image sequences from C4D in AE when working off my NAS so I got the 2 more SSDs in my main machine. Problem is it’s not as easy with the project being stored directly on the internal storage and I have to copy it over to my NAS in order to use other machines for rendering, then copy the renders back to my main machine….All abit of a faff to be honest and wish there was a better way where I could get both the speed and access to the project from all my machine.
@@Oldyellowbrick There are solutions that will get you there with a NAS, but they aren't cheap. Once you get the NAS and all the network equipment to get 10gbe you're easily $10k-$15k in.

Regarding optimal AE performance
Since the Apple silicon M1 Max revolution and their superfast internal SSD drive (6000 mb/s r/w speed) is there still any reason to store project files on a separate external (fast but not as fast) drive (1600/2600 mb/s r/w) .
The same for AE cache. Sure I can plug in a separate fast drive for only cache (1600/2600 mb/s r/w) . But I'm wondering, is it needed for performance?
So, is it possible to store project files and cache on the same internal superfast dive as the system is running on without compromising performance and optimization?
Yeah absolutely, you can still put project files and cache on the same drive. These days standard nvme drives are fast enough, but I know people who put 4 of them in raid configuration to get the fastest speed possible (for simulation caching in Houdini) but that’s a different story.
