Why was Dragon Ball Z created?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2021
- Throughout its entire publication, the story penned by Akira Toriyama was published only as Dragon Ball. So why was there a separation in the anime? Well, that answer lies with Toriyama's editor Kazuhiko Torishima and the aftermath of his frustration with the handling of the Dragon Ball anime.
So join me today as we go over exactly what that "frustration" entailed and how it propelled this franchise to international success!

I think DBZ sounds cooler than just Dragon ball, so it’s nice that they came up with that name for anime “sequel”.

seeing the Toriyama 1:18 art really reminds me how talented of an artist he was at his prime, a lot of artists even in commissioned work use having a simple art style as an excuse to have bad perspective, poor shading, and limp poses. while tori uses a simple style to its fullest to express a really interesting image it really reminds me why his art stands out and works in so many games and manga.
Dragon ball Z was created bcuz we needed a prequel to Dragon ball GT
I'm so used to the manga that I always think of the whole thing as just "Dragon Ball". But, the Z subtitle was smart and really iconic.
I’m glad they chose to name it “dragon ball z” it basically became the WWF of anime in the 90s
If Dragon Ball concluded after the Piccolo Jr Arc, and there was no DBZ, the World of Media would’ve been completely different.
When I saw the notification I initially thought “to make more money that’s why”. I was partially right haha.
Looking at all the other title names the producers and staff were trying to come with for Dragon Ball, "Z" was the best one to choose from. It was simply, cool and memorable. A title like "Gohan's Adventure" doesn't really stand out and doesn't match the tone that DBZ is known for. Especially considering he doesn't exactly play a huge role throughout the Z Era most of the times.
So the Cell Saga just doesn’t exist.
He only really was important at the end, otherwise he accompanied Trunks and Bulma to the cell’s time machine and that’s it
Gohan has more screen time than Goku in Z
@@greenball6838 I mean yeah in that context, but the whole series didn't resolve around just him.
@@Savageku not like he does much in the Cell arc in fairness. He doesn't really do anything until the 4th act, and his big character moment only comes in act 5... and it's pretty lack luster. I think some fans overemphasise his importance in the the Z era, probably because of all the filler in the Dragon Ball Z anime.
I was aware of most of this info and it's definitely about time someone explained it concisely n video form to fans. Great job as always dude!
I think that making Z as a separate title worked well in marketing as down the line their would be a shift in direction anyway. Not only does the art style continue to evolve, everyone's adults, more serious, but the story goes from mystical to sci-fi(something toriyama mentions became popular at the time with hits like Akira). I enjoy the presentation of both DB & DBZ and I'm glad we were able to see the anime shift in direction instead of just carrying on in the db style. Stories like the cell and Frieza arcs just wouldn't hit the same if presented in Dragon Balls more cartoony style. Flexibility & adaptability kept the franchise strong.
I didn't see any shift in direction with the new series. The only shift worthy of note was with the Piccolo Daimao arc, and the tone that was set by it carried on until the end of the Freeza arc. I can't sum up what I feel in regards to the Cell and Buu sagas in a couple words, they feel slightly different in the sort of weight they present (Cell saga as a whole is more ominous, Buu's was more of an "anything could happen" deal) but they still retain the horror vibe that started with Piccolo Daimao. Buu's arc alone on the other hand, brought back some of the early DB hijinks, and even focused on mysticism again. My point is, DBZ worked better as a hard timeskip device for a new era of fighters and stories than any sort of direction guideline.
But early DBZ had the DB style so you contradicted yourself, and it changed over time too
@@zummone Cell saga was far more serious and the stakes were high compared to the OG Sagas,Buu saga was somewhat serious but at the same time comedic
That's interesting about the producer drama, I had no idea. Honestly, I love Dragon Ball anime, primarily how they did the King Piccolo and Piccolo Jr arc.
Never before have I clicked so fast
not gonna lie i was kinda expecting toriyama just to say z just sounded cool knowing how down to earth he is
This kinda shows that Toriyama never really intended for Gohan to become the main character.
It’s because of dragon ball z that dragon ball has as much fans as it does today, it introduced the super saiyan factor and made it much more exciting complex and a rich feel to it all kids in their teens wanted to become super saiyans and it grew from there🤣
I'm a huge Dragon Ball Z fan as a kid I used to play some of the games on the PS2, and I have finish watching all of the Dragon Ball Z series back in the 90s. Thank you Akira for everything you done. You show people what is like to be a true martial arts fighter.
I picked this video as a comfy “I know this, I like this guy” video. I still learned things! You’re super well researched and beautifully succinct.
What a twist 😂😂😂😂
Again and again, Toriyama really just wings it left and right and hits the jackpot every time. He’s the luckiest man alive!
I am so glad you said the important bit in the first 15 seconds of the video else I would have written this off as clickbait haha
This was a great video with no filler, just like the Manga 🥛

I wonder if Dragon Ball would be as popular as it is if it wasn't split into to 2 shows. Most Dragon Ball fans haven't even seen Dragon Ball.
That's really because Z was dubbed in North America first, when the franchise really blew up, 5 years before the original series was dubbed, that's the main reason why Z is more popular.
@@jasonone8726 First 13 episodes of DB was dubbed first, It wasn't popular so Funimation cancelled it and decided to dub Z instead, 2001 they went back and redubbed DB. (edited because i got the date wrong for the redub of DB)
@@majinya6199 Actually they cancelled work on the show because of bad ratings, which was in part due to the show's awkward timeslots. Apparently it had even worse timeslots than DBZ when it was first airing on saturday mornings in syndication, so i can only assume it was being aired at like 4am on Mondays or something. This article explains the dub's history pretty well:
1995
FUNimation begins production on Dragon Ball. The company itself, however, is only directly involved with the scripting, editing and overall decision making. Voice-over and post production work is farmed out to the Vancouver, Canada-based Ocean Group, and a new musical score is produced by Griffiths and Ramsey.
26 episodes are planned for the first season - 13 are finished, and another 13 are scripted. FUNimation's plan is to show the first half of the season, and complete the production and airing of the remaining episodes only "if the ratings warrant it."
September 1995
FUNimation's English-dubbed version of Dragon Ball premieres in weekly syndication on US television. The show is distributed by Seagull Productions, who demands some censoring and editing, but relatively little compared to what would come later.
Unfortunately, Seagull is unable to secure anything but very poor timeslots. As a result, the ratings are dismal, and production of the remaining 13 episodes of the first season is cancelled.
1996
Based on its poor first-year performance, FUNimation concludes that the original Dragon Ball series is not a "good fit for the US market," and decides that they might have greater success with its more action-packed sequel series, Dragon Ball Z.
This decision leaves 140 Dragon Ball episodes skipped, and FUNimation begins production on Dragon Ball Z. In order to make the first complete story arc fit into a standard 26-episode US television season, FUNimation cuts 9 episodes worth of material.
I sometimes wonder what would of happened if FUNi didn't skip ahead to DBZ, and kept dubbing DB /w the Ocean cast and Peter Berring's score. People like Saban, Faulconer, Schemmel and Chris Sabat might have never been involved with the franchise in this alternate reality.

Love these videos, so much insight
I refer to the franchise as the "Dragon Ball series", but when it comes to the individuals shows, of course they have their own titles. I loop Ball, Z, and GT together as a chronological trilogy. Super is more of a spin-off, imo.
I think GT is more of a spin-off, contrary to super which was written by Toriyama right?
@@HyperMario64 Not really. Toriyama was well-involved at the start of both shows, and even throughout was referred to for a confirmation on ideas, while allowing the Toei staff to mainly do what they want. Toriyama's involvement with either show is akin to his say on the movies - as in negligible at best (with the exception of Battle of Gods & Path to Power). The reason I accept GT as a third piece of the pie, and not Super, is because tonally, chronologically, and conceptually GT feels more like a continuation of the main story than Super. Super feels more like a modern remake (and regression at times) of Z, if anything, while GT, similar to Ball, has its own feel.
@@calebdonaldson8770 As indeed Toriyama was involved with GT, I must disagree. Super is way more consistent than GT with the writing of the previous series, with a certain focus on increasing power levels, new more powerful foes and with the effort of maintaining most of the well-known characters on screen. GT on the other hand looks to me way more like the very beginning of DB with a lot of fucking around and random stuff, almost unconsequencial. By expanding the whole cosmology in Super, I think there is a more serious commitment to the original DBZ series, despite being written way later than GT.
@@HyperMario64 I disagree. Super is far less consequential, especially with Beerus & Whis tip-toeing around, ruining any sense of stakes or progression. Super has shown us far less worldbuilding and character growth with the exception of a select few moments. GT still has inconsistencies and poor writing at times (as did much of Z), but such is FAR more prevalent in Super. Super has given us the absolute lowest of lows, cheap antagonists, gross mistreatment of our characters, cringeworthy moments, garbage asspulls, gaping plotholes, constant recycling of material, and complete lack of tension (most of the time). GT does these things to some degree, since it is far from perfect, but I can stomach GT a lot more, and there are many things it does to greatly expand the lore of the franchise. Other than BoG, Super has rarely put in quality, meaningful writing. Other than the Zamasu Arc, Super lacks consistently good arcs, and even that one is highly questionable. A much higher portion of GT has superior writing, along with legitimate stakes and threats. GT is, again, a flawed production nowhere near Z or Ball, but if I had to rank these shows, I'd still put GT above Super. At least GT was genuine and memorable to a higher degree than Super. GT feels like Toriyama, or at least to the extent Toei could, while Super feels like a deliberate laugh in the face at everything he's ever done. I'd rather an original story that may not be very good, compared to a shameless, offbrand rehash. I'd rather the SW Prequels than the Sequels. I'd rather GT than Super.

I do find it fitting for both shows to be separated with a title change, since they do have a different tone overall. @@forgottenrelics1197 Have you read Toriko?
Because of akira toryimas imagination.
Dragon Ball Zenkai sounds good since Zenkai boost was introduced.
The "Zenkai boost" is a fanmade term as all official material concerning the phenomenon refers to it as either "Saiya Power" or "the Saiyan trait". Fans associate Zenkai with this as the ending refers to a "Miracle Zenkai Power" but that would be an erroneous connection as the manga had not even introduced the Saiyan trait as a plot point by the time the Z anime started airing (the first episode of DBZ aired only one day after the chapter of the manga where Goku returns back to the mortal realm was released in Weekly Shonen Jump). Simply put, there's no use of Zenkai in the context fans use it within official material and, therefore, a hypothetical "Dragon Ball Zenkai" title would be more for the cool factor of its name than any in-universe reason.
for me DBZ is the ending
In one of his notes in the manga he said he wrote down a 2 but his English is so bad they thought he put down a Z, and from that misunderstanding the Z remained

If dragon ball z is supposed to be the end, why did they make super?
Because they didn't plan on that back then. The whole reason why dragon ball super exist is because of money.
Leaving aside how Toriyama didn't plan on future instalments (or when he'd actually end the series until he decided he couldn't go further than the Boo Arc), it'd be more accurate to make this comment about GT. Super is essentially a side story before the last 3 episodes of Z, whereas GT was a direct continuation after Z's conclusion.
The 'Z' meaning 'nothing comes after this' made me laugh. very dated comment.
Also, shoulda called the series 'Gohan's Bizarre Adventure'.
But it's what was planned back then. In 1989, Toriyama did intend DBZ to be the ending.
OG Dragon ball is objectively better than DBZ, change my mind.
