- Continuing on with the Dragon Ball discussion trend. Today we are looking at how the series came to be in the first place! As we follow the struggles that Akira Toriyama and Kazuhiko Torishima went through in the effort to create Dragon Ball, in a pinpoint recreation.

It's crazy seeing how far this series has come, the thought of it having an "early phase" just seems impossible with how normalized it is now, Rest in Power you absolute Legend

meanwhile in another world, dragon boy is a runaway success that's worldwide, as it follows the main character and his race of dragon people.
This just goes to show how no IP is really original. Just play with a preexisting concept enough to where it become unique. Nobody sees Dragon Ball now and thinks "oh it was inspired by Journey to the West", it's its own thing and it'll influence other artists' ideas and so on. That's the beauty of art
This. Now that Toriyama is gone, of course people will bring up how much he has influenced the works of other mangaka, but I hate when they use the word "copy".
If Kishimoto and Oda copied Toriyama, then Toriyama copied Journey to the West and Bruce Lee movies lol.
I mean, the deciding factor was the change to a more dedicated fighting manga after the first arc was over. If it was just that the journey to the west influence would be obvious. Dragon Ball just changed and kept changing until it was completely different
Thats art, inspired and inspiring, toriyama inspired artist like oda, kishimoto and kim jung gi to create their own thing
Tbf, not many Westerners actually know about journey to the West, but dragon ball did stand out as its own thing

Even when I draw fan arts I always struggle with the designs they are not easy tbh let alone animation! that’s why I think shintani designs works so well because they are simple and easy to follow every time I want to draw Dragon ball now I go to his characters sheets as a reference

It's hard to appreciate now what a challenge Shonen Jump offered to Toriyama in making a manga more successful than Dr. Slump. Like Dragon Ball practically prints its own money now, bur Dr. Slump was *huge*. It had an anime, and three movies by then (it's total would be 11 films). Ironically, in the Jackie Chan films Toriyama likes so much, Chan in his character "Muscles" would cosplay as Arale in the film "My Lucky Stars".
Nobody knew Dragon Ball would be a runaway success, and I would argue that it didn't really achieve that until Piccolo arc. Now you have Goku Day (hope you had a good one guys!), and the Super Saiyan himself being paraded at Macy's every year, and even shirts with the Kame logo on them. Now you'd be hard pressed to see anyone appear as Arale in an anime convention.
Depends on where you are, English speaking countries didn't really get Doctor Slump, but in other countries where it did arrive like Italy it's still very much popular, it may not be quite the global sensation dragonball is but you're likely to see some cosplays and stuff if you're in the right country.
In fact, Dr. Slump made Toriyama Japan's best-paid manga artist around 1982.
As an artist trying to design a long running story, this is relatable. As time goes on, the story doesn't even resemble itself from the beginning. Its hard, but its an important process.

True, one of the greatest example on art style change would be Baki.
Just look at how different the Baki 1991 manga is to the latest Baki Dou chapter.
They never give the deserved praise to the editor. Dragon Ball is pretty much a product of the editor. If it was for toriyama it was gonna be a dr slump with action.
Torishima's impact on Dragon Ball is definitely underrated.
Yeah, he made all the right decisions that helped make DB what it was, but at the same time, adult Goku nearly didn't happen because of him lol

If the entirety of the series was from Kid Goku to an older Teen Goku it would've worked perfectly fine.
@@Hieillua Considering where the series was heading, with Goku getting stronger and the show getting more serious, it was definitely the right time to age him up.
I knew Akira took inspiration from journey to the west but I like looking at DB as a whole as its own thing. It's crazy seeing how much has changed over the years, some for the better and some for the worst. It's amazing how addicting DB is whether it's games or the movies/shows.

They didn't really changed Sun Wukong's name since Son Goku is a translation of that

I'm now convinced that toriyama is not only the greatest mangaka ever lived but also the greatest artist and writer to ever do this.
To be able to write and draw multiple hit stories and deliver one after the other and also doing it constantly is huge feat. People might disrespect his writing in dragon ball and call it lazy but also forget his crazy schedule and the fact that he had to write things on the go and he still did a good job.
That's not human.
He is decent but not the greatest in fact compared to actually good writers He seems mid in all honesty

It was originally an homage to the original monkey design
Well that's the real world reason but in the story/lore it was just treated as a werewolf kind of deal with no clear origin, him being an alien doesn't really explain his powers it just clarifies the nature of them as extra terrestrial, similair to how Piccolo used to be a demon born of a freaky green guy who was the god of the earth before also being revealed as an alien.
Basically Goku started as Sun Wu Kong and gradually got further away from the source material into his own character.
Love the new editing style FR! Also it's kinda crazy how huge of an impact Torishima has on Dragon Ball.

Dragon Ball was and always will be one of the greatest anime/manga series and the other series it managed to inspire and I'm happy that as a kid I was able to experience this anime and as I grew older and through UA-camrs I learned more in depth which also includes your channel as I didn't know much about the animation team and other things like importance of perspective and how other artists do it in their style. Also surprisingly due to all these videos it made me realize how the manga was an important source which got me into the habit of reading (as a whole) and collecting more and more Manga's while also opening up to more series of different genres but fighting being one of its themes.

But as a clarification to this video, as someone who speaks both Chinese and Japanese, the name of the character actually wasn't changed from Journey to the West and Sun Wukong and Son Goku is actually written the same way in all languages using chinese characters 孙悟空, so the Japanese know Sun Wukong as Son Goku and vice versa, the Chinese call Son Goku from Dragon Ball "Sun Wukong" because that's just how you read it

That design does appear in a filler episode of og Dragon Ball though without the wings, and in Italy that guy was voiced by the VA who would eventually play adult Goku, which is extra ironic cause he was also considered to play kid Goku before going for another VA so the scrapped voice gets the scrapped character.
