We were sitting in the Students Union bar at Edge Hill when news filtered through [no mobiles in those days, possibly 3 eyed raven?!] that Fairport and Steeleye were strangely playing in the dunes 10 miles away! No idea how we managed to get there, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
R.I.P. Dave Swarbrick who died 2/6/2016. Aged 75.
Early 70's Fairport Convention was absolutely fantastic. The drumming is just super and the telecaster just kills it.
Peggy's no slouch on the bass, either!

Fairport Convention is an impressive band, especially between 1971 and 1976. Excellent musicians, great songs, the environment and the peace that flowed there. Feeling, taste, joy, peace, everything related to the natural ....... that is Fairport Convention expressed with music.
This totally rocks.Imagine being there! Can't understand why most of the people sitting near the stage aren't DANCING!! If I were there, I'd be getting my groove on!
Brilliant many memories of my time at Liverpool Uni and visits to Toad Hall.

Word went round the college and by lunchtime there was no-one there.
I was there, it was even better live.
I saw this version of Fairport Convention at Winterland. They opened for King Crimson. I never stayed to see the headliner. They were that good!

Wonderful stuff. DM and Peggy are a superb rhythm section. I love Swarb's vocals on some songs, he sounds (and looks!) like a singing cockney spiv. Simon's verse shows how reticent and tentative a singer he was in those days, you wouldn't believe it is the same person who sings today, if you hear him singing "Who knows where the time goes" for example, his voice has matured and mellowed like a fine wine.
Everyone knows Swarb were Brum mate. Cockney!?
Saw them only yesterday in new brighton floral hall and during the show peggy made reference to this video popping up on youtube .
Great band / great music. By the way, my beautiful niece Anathea was born on this day in Colorado.
Fairport .... such a great and under appreciated band.

Richard Thompson isn't in this lineup. This is the Angel Delight album lineup, the first after Thompson left the band.
i know, i'm simply quoting simon nicol when he's telling the crowd who wrote the song.

Oops, yes of course you were; sorry.
Of course Richard Thompson and the incomparable Sandy had already moved on, but there was so much spontaneous talent in the band and they were having such a good time they just rolled with it. Dave Mattacks on drums and the irrepressible Dave Swarbrick leading from the front made everyone look good. With Dave Pegg on bass and mandolin, cuing the solo spots must have been tricky. Take it away, Dave!

I was there first time round, although not at this particular gig. Theye were fantastic live, could have you dancing like a dervish one minute then feeling tearful at one of their beautiful ballads, or going on a trip when they stretched out and jammed.
Great tune. The video is about 1/4 second behind the audio but just a quibble.
Haveing seen Fairport only last week, it's doubly sad as both Simon and Peggy are still in the band and playing well with the current lineup of Ric and Chris, if not quite with Swarb's level of attack.

What exactly are these "Ainsdale Beach Tapes"? You've posted several videos of Fairport in one of their best lineups, all obviously recorded at the same venue, but I'd like to know more about them, please? Where are they coming from? Who recorded them?
All I know is that it was recorded (and I assume broadcast) by Granada TV.
