Considering everything Swarb had been through by this point it's unbeleivable that he could still play at all, let alone make the violin almost burst into flames. This is a great testament to him and also the great musicianship of RT. It's hard to imagine the likes of these guys happening again. I was lucky enough to see Swarb quite a number of times with Martin Carthy, Fairports and Whippersnapper. Going back and listening to his early work with Ian Campbell shows that like the young RT, in early Fairports days - these guys were just brilliant from the outset.

An interesting tid bit about the last tune in the medley... The Gravel Walk - time for a long, drawn out thing I discovered, then I'll shut up... I had ordered the Dave Swarbrick Fiddle Tunes the day he had passed, about a few hours before I heard about his passing. Anyway, after a nice email from Maartin Allcock when I desperately needed to make an address change, I received the book a week later (international mail, you see). The last portion of the book has small snippets about the many tunes Swarb has performed on his many, many albums - mostly to point out whether they were traditional pieces (what types) or originals from Swarb (Wishing is an original in this medley) and some have some historical notes about the tunes, which there are a few sentences on the last piece of the above last tune in the medley, The Gravel Walk. Although Swarb jokingly says "The Gravel Path to Granny!", there's some legitimacy to the title, or a reason for the title he gives. Quoted from the fiddle tune book, bottom of page 230: "A favorite reel in County Donnegal, which has a tradition of adapting Scottish tunes. In this case, the root melody is the Scottish reel The Highland Man Who Kissed His Grannie. Granny is a remote, uninhabited glen in southwest County Donnegal, where locals used to summer their sheep. When they went to gather them in Autumn, they would access Granny by climbing up the gravel paths, thus the name." I thought that was pretty kewl.

I’m 73 now and grew up my Dad’s collection of Jimmy Shand and his Band.
This music has never left me… just the right side of melancholy melody and beauty with gaps and spaces for you to fill in your own understanding.
    Certainly not painting by numbers!
