This is the reason why I love Petrucci. He's without a single doubt one of the most complete guitarists of all time. Speed, technique, emotion, you name it, he's got it. All those who say that he's just a wanker with no soul have no clue about him and DT.
Almir, agreed. Whilst there are surely other players with even more crazy technique, Petrucci is not only technically advanced but shows incredible (rock) discipline in his playing. Think of all the solos his laid down over the years where he could just be 'wanking' across the fretboard mindlessly. Instead, he's committed to history solos that honor the song - sequences that follow and highlight the underlying chord changes and the tensions and releases inherent in chord sequences. His solos frequently verge on the 'epic' and orchestral, very dramatic and often also very exciting. Solos of note include those on 'Goodnight Kiss' (What an incredible build of tension and drama by JP and whole of the band!), the ending solo of 'Pale Blue Dot' (Some very nice almost cinematic note choices in my opinion), the fusion-inspired solo on 'Under a Glass Moon', so many examples. And that's not even addressing his wonderfully-rich chord work - think his beautiful clean work in the "Someone Like Him" segment of 'Octavarium'....
@@IshredGuitar yes that's why I'm starting to get into dream theatre as old pink floyd fan. Gilmour is definitely worse technically but man he got the feels.
Imagine, the pressure on you to nail that last note, which is basically the entire defining note of the song, the entire song builds up to that one note, and you gotta nail it, it's easy, but it has to be perfect
Andrey Latinsky Even though I totally share that with you, never forget with these kinds of epic solo's 50% is the music accompanying the solo. The chord progression gives so much of that space to play slowly and so incredibly beautifully. Not to diminish their skills, to the contrary, it is even a bigger testimony to what these guys can do.
+Robert Fennis Very, very good point. Especially true with Dream Theater where the very nature of their compositions (grand, theatrical in nature) mean that musicians like Jordan Rudess are often giving Petrucci a wonderful foundation of rich chords to allude to.
Guitarist John Patrucci = FANTASTIC , This solo goes right to the core of emotion, A True Talent ( That's why I Bought your Guitar John ) I watch this solo every night = POWERFUL ....
I was on the subway on my way to work a couple of years ago, when I heard this solo for the first time. It was so powerful and caught me totally of guard so I sobbed loudly. Amazing feeling. Changed my life forever.
I can feel the pain in the solo! Like i can hear the words through this..this is a solo about some one who has gone through a very hard time..lost his loved ones..and now letting go off the words what he held in his heart for sooo long..by that last bend he screamed and pulled out all he had inside with a smile on his face... annihilated..i feel you john..i feel you!
I still think the opening few notes of this solo are some of the most haunting I've heard. Something about that opening phrase, it's dark and beautiful. Of course the whole solo is a testament to the whole band, the wonderful chord changes, the beautiful work on keys by Jordan and backing by Portnoy and Myung and of course, Petrucci outlining those beautiful changes so expertly.
It's the minor key the solo is written in that makes that haunting feeling: (Ab G F E Eb E F) Minor keys have more tonal options by rule, and hence, more potential flavors to peruse solo-wise. John obviously knows this and utilized it masterfully in the opening solo statement ( also my favorite solo entrance- totally devastating as well as beautifully haunting...) It's my final bucket list item. I want this solo played as my body is lowered into my final resting place. (What a way to go out! )
The absolute best John Petrucci solo in my humble opinion, bar none, period. I could literally sing this solo, with my voice, almost nearly note for note.. Well besides the shredding run of course... It is the perfect blend of soulful, melodic, catchy and technicality, with Another Day solo being the number 2 in my book. Insane, just epic.
If all crappy songs produced these days will be compresed together, and somone will take the best essence of them, it still would not be even closely equal to this two minutes solo with so well composed harmony.... I'm glad they are still recording and can't wait for their new album!!
This solo is so evil that the devil starts singing to this tone, so melodic that angels of heaven starts shading it's harp and it's so fucking emotional that makes any grown man cry. John Petrucci is the best guitarist of all time no doubt but he is truely a master musician who can teleport the listener to other dimension and pull it right back to earth and show the beauty of it.
I can't get listen to the album version without hearing Portnoy's shouting when LaBrie sings this and that noise he makes bfore the solo... it just makes this even more amazing!
It's when hearing this again I'm reminded why I have a Dream Theater logo tattooed on my wrist and their music in my heart. If there is a God, he definitely wrote this solo.
Honestly I don't think I've ever heard a better guitar solo by anyone. And some people say John Petrucci doesn't play with enough emotion. Here's some proof that he does!
I never really thought much of this solo, until recently when I discovered all the self-referencing and numerology behind Octavarium. Suddenly jumped to the top of my favorites, alongside Herman Li's Valley of the Damned outro, yesterday.
This solo was my phone ringtone for more than a year - I've never picked up the phone

How can he be so calm during that solo...??
I would scream so hard that the first row would lose their hair.

I think he actually screams his heart out in the Score DVD while playing this
How do you think Jordan ruddess lost his hair..?

To hold that last note for almost 30 sec without fading , so clean and clear is totally insane, out of this World
Ramon De Bakker it sounded much better when he did it on Score
Its not actually one continuous note, he picks it a number of times in order to get it to last that long. Still incredible sounding nonetheless!
yeah and that's why it is actually one of the easiest parts
