John Petrucci was going by a guitar store one time, when he saw a little boy playing guitar and suddenly the boy starts crying. He went there and said to the kid: you never let anyone tell what you cant do my son, you stay focus and you will accomplish great things in life. That kid was none other than Albert Einstein.
For 1 guy to nail that once in the studio once is awesome. For 2 guys to nail the harmonized riff once in the studio is remarkable. For 2 guys to pull that off every night on a full tour is nutbusting mindblowingly absurdly phenomenal. Im running out of adjectives here.
For real. This and many other moments of composition just floor me when I'm reminded of how QUICKLY they put the album together. It happened to be the first album of theirs I listened to before I ever saw what they looked like, but promo photos had them looking just about exactly as I imagined them: discovering an affinity for black shirts, black boots, and black hair dye that has only grown stronger to this very day 🤓 hahaha
I'm astonished of how this man Petrucci won't stop doing anything else but looking at his fingers move. His concentration is unbelievable. For all of you (including myself) this is more than just playing an instrument. This is a lesson not only musicians but everybody should learn from him if you ever wanna become a perfectionist in what/who you are: concentrate, live for the damn moment.
Petrucci playing this unison legato with Jordan is just stunning. I realise he advocates practicing those sorts of parts in small segments, but even then, bringing it all together, live on stage. Stunning technical control, he has.
+munkeepilot It takes years of practice and a lot of coordination indeed. I play mandolin beside the guitar and I have a pal who plays mandolin as well. And in our college group we sometimes have to play the same stuff at very fast speeds (for a mandolin obviously which would be around 150/160bpm) and in the begining you kinda did see that there was 2 guys playing those same notes but now you can barely notice it. That is the power of training
Often on songs Jordan will do myungs parts with his left hand and match petrucci in his right. It's madness. Check out the instrumedley from love at budokan. Just insanity
200 years from now, people will look at this man's work and receive it the way we look at Mozart's and likes today. I am glad for once to be witnessing great talent in my life time. IMO, JP has the most flawless shredding technique. If somebody measures the timing of each note, I am sure they are all consistent like a computer clock. Oh and not a slight string noise!
It takes someone with no soul to make a false and shitty claim like that. Listen to "pull me under, take the time, these walls and panic attack. I assure you you're opinion of the band will change.
You people keep talking crap about Mangini. Mangini is a great drummer. He can play any Portnoy evidently. The one thing that Portnoy has done was backing vocals. Portnoy wanted out to go on a hiatus. The band seems happier overall. Oh andPetrucci no longer needs a spit shield.
Portnoy had a different personality compared to the rest of the band that has a shy type of personality. People are looking for a clone to replace Portnoy, but it's not going to happen. People are hating Mangini for no good reason. Yes, the band is different, but they are still one of the best bands out there.
+Matthew MacWilliams Man look at any of mangini's live performances. He has to bust his balls to play the beats portnoy composed. Pick a song and compare mangini's and portnoy's performances on it. Portnoy made it look easy, looked cool while playing it and gave backing vocals. Mangini can do none of these things. And with portnoy gone the band has lost a great deal of its technicality
+crazyassdrummer Dude, that is simply not true. Now I'm a bigger fan of Portnoy's than Mangini's, but to claim that MP is technically superior to MM is nonsense.
Eivind Nilsen Look mangini has better solos i'll give you that. But that's just because i think he prepares for them while portnoy just improvises. You can always tell by hearing a solo whether its prepared or the drummer is just coming up with it. But look at my last comment. Portnoy composed drums on a song as complicated as the dance of eternity which mangini is yet to do. And just pick a song by them and compare live performances by both of the drummers. Just look who is more easy and more fluent on the drums live.
I've been playing guitar 20 years, was playing through bbc sessions zeppelin 8th grade.... bachs chaconne in d minor 1004 10th grade.... let's just say I'm no stranger to music. if you hand be tabs i look for the sheet music equivalent... just saw this clip and had to replay it 10 times to make sure it was real. This band is on a level of technicality, discipline, creativity(subjective) I've never seen before. i saw Steve Morse with deep purple and remember being humbled and amazed.... this 3 minute clip leaves me humbled and amazed. anybody recommend a good starter album to listen to by this band dream theater? this song is like 14 minutes long i just looked it up i wanna start dissecting this guy petrucci but this song would take me a year to learn this
started on scenes from a memory, learning the solo. very difficult guitar work to learn and memorize but had opened up new perspectives on music for me
at 1:02, do you guys understand how difficult it is to have the keyboard and the guitar synced to that level of precision all the way to 1:40 ? This is the best band out there, there is no real competition.
I don't know why but every member of DT except John and John are really showing excitement when playing their solos, hard stuff etc. I never saw John Myung getting excited while playing and it's really rare that Petrucci shows emotion while playing a solo. I'm not saying "It doesn't have soul!" i freaking love Dream Theater but it was just a Train of Thought.
It takes a LOT of focus and concentration to play something like this accurately live. So I don’t blame him for not being too animated or emotional when playing it. He’s locked in, precise. That’s his thing. He doesn’t do EVH faces and jumps.
Ok, people seriously need to stop these kind of bullshit comparisons. There's no best guitarist. Petrucci may be technically better than Synyster, but he's still not the best guitarist. You will always find someone more technical and that's why it's stupid to only care about technique.
I never understand why portnoy leave the band after all those amazing year together?? I think portnoy is the only one who could connect with all the instrument in the band especially with Petrucci. No one can replace him.. not even mike mangini !
Meanwhile the Pinzball wizard is playing it all while staring into space and smiling. I am a guitar player foremost, but Jordan always impresses me the most.
Nothing in the annals of modern music comes close to this. Its utterly perfection put to music. The hammering groove at the end is from a position of exaltation. I don't even follow these guys but, I have to give credit where credit is due. Off the chain...

ahh I love you hehe
You had me in the first half hahaha
sam hyde
People are really not aware that the Theory of Relativity is really about the measuring the difference between John Petrucci and mortals
😂

Best of best & been lucky to see him play South FL many times, 3G series
It is mighty clean, but got JP and JR here…
Yes absolutely right, they r both way up on the scale of talent, iv seen them live 3 times, shout out,,, S.FLORIDA
They seriously have to be some of the best musicians in the world combined in one band.
Dream Theater - "We play ALL the notes"
All the notes play DT
hahahyahahahashahahaahah
At the same time
2:30 John Petrucci didn't miss the harmonic. The harmonic missed John Petrucci.
Lol
+Pier-Luc Tardif The harmonic ducked away under a nearby barrage of notes, hoping to escape Petrucci's notice....
lol u like zlatan
Pier-Luc Tardif lol
Haha I think it still sounds kind of badass though!
I'm astonished of how this man Petrucci won't stop doing anything else but looking at his fingers move. His concentration is unbelievable. What is the Shampoo Petrucci use?
+ittiphol ishakwan Yes.
+ittiphol ishakwan Mesa shampooing
Your question should be about the shampoo that myung uses.
Ozzy suggested he uses Johnson and johnsons no more tears. John uses Head and shoulders soapavarium
+IA SPACE He uses soap, alternate picked into each thread of hair.
I cant even begin to comprehend that! Note for note perfect with the studio version. Wow!!! Thats why I love this band!
Yeah. I was blown away. Even the timing was perfect all the time. I knew Petrucci was awesome but this is just insanely good.
Note for note until James Labrie enters
@@christians494 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You don't fully appreciate this until you realize most of it is unison between guitar and keys!!!!!!!
+munkeepilot I know, to keep up the unison at that speed is just...wow.
+munkeepilot Yeah man, its a stunning example of disciplined and technical playing, all in a musical context.
And the keys ruin it with the cheesy fake digisound.
Often on songs Jordan will do myungs parts with his left hand and match petrucci in his right. It's madness. Check out the instrumedley from love at budokan. Just insanity
PHRYGIAN DOMINANT
+Reese Smith I agree wholeheartedly with your shouted contribution.
I searched for "in the name of petrucci" and this came up.
guitarninja24 lol!
200 years from now, people will look at this man's work and receive it the way we look at Mozart's and likes today. I am glad for once to be witnessing great talent in my life time. John Petrucci is the only man crazy enough to attempt this live and the only man skilled enough to pull it off every time.
I hate when John Petrucci is compared to Jesus. I mean he's good and all, but he's no John Petrucci.
LOL
hahahaha this made my day xD
EmulatorNoob exactly
EmulatorNoob NECIO!
EmulatorNoob LOL 😂
But can he play smells like teen spirit?
Chris Kametriser maybe but it will take him a while
i doubt it, he doesn´t even look to be djent
Chris Kametriser lol he just playd an incredibl solo how can u even ask sumthing like that??
Jolly bolly brom-dee-doo jister O I am no joke expert, but I think it was meant as a joke, but I could be wrong though.
Ghostwriter 4321 Mine was meant as a joke as well, fellow comment writer! Unfortunately, not many people are familiar with this type of sarcasm.
Iam coming here because of John Myung..The bassline is awesome. .John myung is badass
Petrucci didn't miss the hamonic at the end, the harmonic missed him.
Like a sonic boom, petrucci is faster than sound?
Your profile picture scared me
sorry
Bass line is so amazing. . John Myung you are awesome
I keep coming back to this video..one of the best Petrucci videos ever..
In the name of petrucci
And the name of the song hasn't even been changed
How about In The Name of Rudess. He's every bit as talented as John. Dude got into Juilliard when he was 9 years old.
Not funny
Paul Thibault It’s because JP looks like Jesus so...yeah In The Name Of Petrucci.
How people can dislike such amazing talent?
JP played this 2,000 years ago in Jerusalem...that's why he was crucified.
Peter Gandenberger Romans were jealous.
Okay but why is no one talking about Jordan Rudess??
He literally matched Petrucci note for note and is definitely equally talented!
One of the most amazing solos i have ever listene
It's a shame that nobody recognizes that the bass groove playing in the background is so FUCKING GOOD.
Petrucci's strings resist to the temperature of the sun, because his finger speed burn normal strings xD
John Pretrucci is the best guitarist ever.
dream theater is a band formed by gods!!
"This music has no soul!". This music grooves like hell, and has amazingly technical solo's too (used in a tasteful way). Does that sound impossible??
+jijst5 It does, don't it! I completely agree, jijst!
I'm glad I found someone whom I can share my thoughts with :') I cri evritiem
jijst5 liek dis if u cri evrtim
i cri evritiem
It takes someone with no soul to make a false and shitty claim like that. Listen to "pull me under, take the time, these walls and panic attack. I assure you you're opinion of the band will change.
Melhor banda 😍😍😍
Carolaini Cardoso

1:54 is even more choking, that snare...
John myung was awesome
John Petrucci looks like HADES. best guitarist ever john.
+Yica Dar more like jesus :p
1:19 - Jordan's like "yeah this is so easy".
Jordan and John r just insane.
I love this improv section of this song, it never gets old.
I've been playing guitar 20 years, was playing through bbc sessions zeppelin 8th grade.... bachs chaconne in d minor 1004 10th grade.... let's just say I'm no stranger to music. if you hand be tabs i look for the sheet music equivalent...

this
I recommend Octavarium
I say probably The Glass Prison, Honor Thy Father, The Dance of Eternity, This Dying Soul, and uhhhh Panic Attack.
if you want technique: train of thoughts
if you want their best album: metropolis
also recommended: octavarium
Your comment makes me so happy. I'd say start from beginning album and work your way newer. :-)
started on scenes from a memory, learning the solo. very difficult guitar work to learn and memorize but had opened up new perspectives on music for me
Genius just amazing playing WOW : O
i wonder if the band misses MP's spit shower?
Steve Haigh haha
Simply one of the greatest things I've ever witnessed
this video recaptured the feeling I had when first listening to john 5...in other words complete stupefying awe.
That is some insane synchronicity…...
*watches..."I should use a metronome more often... :c"
My All-Time Favorite Solo Ever Composed. I Love It With A Passion.
just perfect, all of them!
John petrucci is handsome .
Isso não são músicos gente, são monstros tocando!!!!queque isso!!!! Dizer que tocam mt é pouco :O
the kind of solo that when you learn it is a whole new world in your guitarrist life c:
awesome!!!

best guitarist period.
John Petrucci is by far the best guitarist ever!
Allan holdsworth says hello
It's amazing!!
Amazing!
Can we rename the video to "In The Name Of Petrucci"

amazing musicians
Now who talks about Synyster gates being the best guitarist in the world ?
Ok, people seriously need to stop these kind of bullshit comparisons. There's no best guitarist. Petrucci may be technically better than Synyster, but he's still not the best guitarist. You will always find someone more technical and that's why it's stupid to only care about technique.
Someone's triggered
Haha not at all, I like Syn but he's not even one of my favorite and I prefer John Petrucci. I'm just speaking the truth ;)
Look, maybe hes teq is better but in my opinion gates is more emotional, (example, Crimson Day)
still prefer dream theater on a7x
Boolbolim Productions look at the solo for hollow years if you wanna know what emotion is
01:25 - looks like you’re playing Sonic, running fast, loopings, getting all the gold coins....
Have you heard the instrumental part of Metropolis pt1? Sounds like Sonic songs also
Love the groove at the end
amazing
I really wished Portnoy BACK to Dream Theater again.
When you're Portnoy, but that damn mosquito keeps bugging you 2:36
This is absolutely. The best of the best. Goosbumps every time I see this.
To bad Portnoy has left the crew.
Crazy so cool
I never understand why portnoy leave the band after all those amazing year together??
I think portnoy is the only one who could connect with all the instrument in the band especially with Petrucci.
No one can replace him.. not even mike mangini !
Mangini is kicking ass but I agree portnoy had the true DT feel I miss him
@@themetalicious7195 yeah I think Portnoy is one of the soul in the band. I don't hate Mangini but, I rather see Portnoy kick that pedal.
Guess who's back, alright 😅
that how you stand when you want to play an instrument. not jumping around like hamster
awesome
Such chops. It boggles my mind. It is mind bottling.
Hilarious he messed up the easiest part.
he only can play difficult stuff LOL
metalheadblues which is the easiest part? The legato? Lol
2:30 it supposed to be a pinch harmonic
metalheadblues Isn’t it just a harmonic if he is just using his fingers and it isn’t a fret?
@@istolethisaccount It is indeed, it's a natural harmonic.
Ohhh portnoy... i miss you
Everyone must once just carefully listen to the drums...Its just awesome.
Meanwhile the Pinzball wizard is playing it all while staring into space and smiling. I am a guitar player foremost, but Jordan always impresses me the most.
ok, but can he play smoke on the water ?
One day Zlatan taught a boy how to play guitar.
This kid is now know as John Petrucci #respect
John Petrucci taught Zlatan how to play football.
😂😂😂😂👏👏👏👏
how could? They both are a lord already
The most beautiful solo i've been heard
Sorry
I love that I could hear the bass for once!
Could you imagine the finger pleasure Petrucci would unleash on his girl. Play that !
LoL
in the name of jordan rudess l,,l. >.< .l,,l
Mind blowing
when John starts, i feel and think like the tetris blocks coloured falling down from the skies and the world are ending.
awesome
Estos tipos si que toca dificil... eso es lo que lo caracteriza a dream theater por eso me encanta este grupo :)
this solo is so frickin incredible.
Most Amazing Musicians Ever !!!
I cry blood for this!
i love the bassline!!
Muestra perfecta de sincronia y perfeccion, que mas se puede decir, montruos
the whole band kicks ass... this is umbelieveble
i like this
oh my god!!!! :D... simply amazing and perfect!!! lov em ajaja
favorite band !! john petrucci beast harmonic (y)
This is perfection
brilliant
this tour was amazing, first time seeing dream theater was in 08. guess i won't be seeing them in 14 but maybe next year...maybe?
It's amazing how dream theater's music is still one of the most technical and most exhilarating music out there after all these years.
GODS! AMAZING SONG!!!
Just wow.
Motivação pra aprender mais e mais..
Fantastico :))))
fenomenais isso mostra que o METAL em técnica e disciplina sempre esta um passo a frente muito bom
Nothing in the annals of modern music comes close to this. Its utterly perfection put to music. The hammering groove at the end is from a position of exaltation. I don't even follow these guys but, I have to give credit where credit is due. Off the chain...
