I think the main thing this might transform is getting more people into backcountry skiing. Having a place you can go to with signs, amenities, (assumedly) some safety regulation, and runs already planned makes it easy for people who haven’t toured before to get a good experience.
France was full of back country resorts during the Covid season. All the ski lifts were closed for the whole season and all my local resorts were like this. It was the best season of my life. I also thought we should develop the idea of ski areas without lifts as a natural alternative. People seemed to enjoy ski touring with a little bit of infrastructure like signage and easy parking. I love this video, thanks for sharing.
One word dynafit
What contradiction and hypocrisy: “natural alternative”…with (easy) parking. 🙄. Muh Roads! 🤦
There are natural alternatives already, they’re everywhere. In Europe you can hike up any mountain you wish.
Love this idea. Not as a substitute or alternative to backcountry ski touring but as an addition. Amazing.
Bluebrid backcounty was so fun and nice. RIP you will be missed. Love the idea of touring ski areas and I want more!
A huge thanks to Brian Hall for sticking with us on this project over the past bunch of years. It wasn't an easy one to bring to life, but I'm happy we all hung in there. Shout out to Jeff Thomas for bringing the idea to life at the beginning of the process.
Thank you Mike. Brian is a legend!! Cheers to the Bulkley Valley Ski Community for their incredible passion. Love it up there!
Great work on capturing the magic of Northwest BC. Kudos to Brian for the vision, and the volunteers of the Bulkley Backcountry Ski Society and Recreation Sites and Trails BC for continuing the dream. It takes a community to keep a backcountry ski hill!
Was never able to make it to Bluebird in Colorado, but I love the idea, and I hope Hankin Evelyn succeeds (even though it's even farther away from me than CO). And I appreciate all the people putting their time and money and investments into creating new ski areas like this--they WILL be part of skiing's future. I can just feel it.
Bluebird was a cool spot. Sad they closed.
Bluebird Backcountry outside of Kremmling Clorado was an awesome experiment. It would still be up and running if it was a bit closer to the Front Range and Denver, we were all super bummed when it shut down. Best of luck with the project!
Agreed, however, I don't think Bluebird had terrain that looked this good :D
Every time the word " shift ' was interjected we got a shot of their Salomon binding😂
I noticed that too😅
Stoked to see this area get some love from the big brands in our industry!
That will probably ruin it. Like everything any big companies touch anywhere. It looks good as is.
@martinzurek6390 definitely happened to My Cain on Vancouver Island. Industry pros came for a shoot and then alllll the city folk wanted a piece the following year. Still a rad spot but certainly not the same.
@@gdybdal While I somewhat agree with the sentiment, there's a big difference between a gear/outerwear brand giving small mountains like ours publicity versus large corporate buy-ins that we've seen at the larger resorts. I can deal with slightly longer lines if it means a better budget to manage and upkeep what we have at our little locals.
I hope we see more places like this! Bluebird Backcountry attempted it outside of Steamboat CO and only made it a couple of years- hopefully Hankin does better! It looks like they will have access to much more interesting terrain, so that's a start!
And it looks like they aren't charging people... Not based on a business idea, but based on the idea community wanting something like this enough to come together and make it happen.
Part of the issue was using private land, this seems like a partnership with the national forest to help build sustainable areas for safety - a drastically different platform than charging people for land use and rentals/lessons.
The best thing we have close to this is Hidden Valley in RMNP.
Bluebird was never gonna make it. There’s ample other places in CO that are similar to this; ghost ski areas, hut zones, etc. granted our snowpack isn’t nearly as good/deep as BC
The old cuchara resort is becoming this in southern Colorado albeit with a limited snowpack
We've been around for more than 10 years now, its a hoot!
Love to see Brian getting to talk about this massive labour of love he’s embarked on for over a decade! Smithers BC local, absolutely love Hankin Evelyn
This is a move in the right direction for snow-sports as the vibe at ski resorts is increasingly souring… crowded, desperate, expensive, and unnatural. I just want snow and my snowboard these days and none of that excessive and distracting bouche shit.
Wonderful idea. From 1984-1993 ,I got hooked on Telemark skiing as a gateway to backcountry skiing. So glad the gear has improved, and evolved more Alpine skiers to enjoy the sams experience. This was in the central Sierra Nevada mtns. of California
Fantastic. I was a little skeptical when I saw the title, but a minute in I realized I love it. I skin up the hills at the resorts my family goes to but don't have companions for heading to the backcountry (or the skills/confidence to do it myself), but this would be a dream come true. I wish there were something like that near me. And highest praise for pointing out that we can't really own anything, that future generations always have to step in and take over. Great things happening!
Hi Adam, thanks for your comment! Dreams are made to come true, you could start your backcountry journey by checking out our How To Series on the matter 😉 Here is the link if you want to check it out ua-cam.com/play/PLpskfzTlpo4itdUxHQvh_pr5EJtlBCbqj.html&feature=shared
What a pure experience. I dig hiking and earning my turns. Being on my own and totally responsible for myself. Nothing good comes easy!
Getting out of the crowds and avoiding lifelines. Resort skiing is ultra expensive, it's a rich man's sport unless you dedicate your life to it and I did so before I became a family man. Ski resorts are ultra greedy, litigious and their prices have skyrocketed far faster than this insane inflation.
Not exactly a business model I feel obligated to enable.
I lived in Smithers BC and absolutely loved Hankin!
We skied there last season, wonderful experience. Thanks for everything!!!
The eternal quest for fresh pow. My favorite part of riding mountains, too bad i board. Props to Hankyn Evelyn.
I love this as a way to get into ski touring. Never been myself but this seems like a great way to try out things you’ve learned after a guided tour with a bit of a safety net. Can’t wait for this to catch on. And surely this would also make certain areas cheaper for those that don’t mind earning their run.
Don't move to Smithers, it sucks here :P
…kudos to Salomon for sponsoring this quality doc; a perfect example of how to sustainably develop our Commons. A gorgeous inspiration for rewilding our world - David Attenborough would approve! People will vote for this kind of accessibility and it will promote a growing deep appreciation for Earth’s wonderful treasures! Maybe I’ll just go out and buy a new pair of Salomon skis.
Well done Mike! Reinvigorates the passion for Hiking and Skiing with friends for the sheer Love of the Sport.
It’s funny, when I was younger I did not have the time to hike for the pow now retired I do have the time and I am still very fit, I do a lot of long distance backpacking. I enjoy hiking and I enjoy skiing, so this sounds great.
I helped fall and buck trees for this project years ago. It’s such a cool area and there was a ton of work done by the BC Forest Fire Fighters for training before the fire season was on.
Some of the best days of my life (so far) have been spent at a local abandoned ski resort. The trails are still there but the lifts are not.
what an incredible human. an absolute inspiration. why is this not everywhere there are humans, pow and vertical of any size?
I use to work at a ski resort well actually 3 in my time .....as a ski patroller and we had a open boundry policy ....wich was great for the public to acess the back and side country areas around our hill .....we had 4 lifts there . But i was always out of bounds skiing back out there .....ha ! Im retired now and still skiing the back country with my dogs in my back yard . But yea always look at mountains like a land scaper wanting to take a chainsaw up there and cut in some runs....😂
Way to bring the love, the smarts and the fun.
Would you go there? ❄️
Anytime!! Looks like a dream. I wish this model would be common in Europe
Went there twice in February Great area for people new to touring, or who are conservative in terms of risk. The bulk of the gladed runs have little to no avvy risk. The access to the Alpine is immediate.
Will be returning next March.
Nope
Lived in Smithers in 2018, this is how its done 🤘, take notes Zincton
There is always support for this idea, but will it thrive in practice? BC experiences are free, so it doesnt attract existing BC skiers much. Bluebird Backcountry didnt last long in Colorado. One could chalk that up to it being the the middle of BFE, but we will see. If this was as convenient to get to as my local zones, it would have some draw.
Seems like a great way to introduce people to backcountry.
You have to ask, Why not search out your own backcountry instead of paying whatever fee they charge? There are so many amazing and low risk places.
Because you know that those places will be fun to ride, that they are easily accessible and are (hopefully) safe
Personally I always did backcountry skiing on my own on public land, but it's not always fun because the places you can go are sometimes hard to reach and they aren't always what you expected, while now two provincial parks in my area opened some dedicated backcountry skiing areas and it's 10x more fun than what I used to do
@@PatG-xd8qn I've come across some info that there a plethera of closed ski areas that offer perfect gladed runs all over the Rockies...
Sheep syndrome is real
@@Skibbidyboobop Maybe, but that's not the case in my area
I'm from the northeast and have only ever skied on fresh power once..man was it glorious.
Come to Québec we always have fresh snow
I've never heard of this snowboard area. I have to check it out!! That's all we used to do in Utah was hike to ride.
This is beautiful, Keep up the good work!
Looks AWESOME!🔥
So, so, soooooo good!! 😍👍
Great Movie, nice to see Ryder just tearing it up!
Be still my heart!! Cannot wait to visit here.
Love the concept!
really nice concept. i would like something like this close to my home. also very sustainable. In the ski resorts closest to me in Austria the pow is gone after like 1 hour past opening. Especially on holidays and weekends. However what works well for me is taking the chair and then hike some lines. This way i get untracked powder but i dont have to hike as much as without the lift.
Cool concept. Hey Salomon why are half the shots blackcomb slackcountry?
What an amazing concept, Kudos!
I'll have to come for a visit the next time I'm in Smithers!
Give me a shout for a local tour of the area.
I love this concept. With the high cost and crowded slopes skiing becomes unappealing when it shouldn't. When I learned to ski we lived in a hilly area in Northern Michigan. I ski toured to these back woods hills. Then I got older and started going to resorts, then ski team, then I graduated and that all ended. I started a life with a family. I only came back to skiing through a buddy that we used to ski together since about 3rd grade. We skied again together for about 5 years then he was killed in a motorcycle accident. I am now not skiing again and I miss it.
This place looks amazing!
Backcountry skiing is very popular in Montana where I’m at because of the Bitterroot mountains!
I know these people have worked hard for this but I also hope they understand just how lucky they are to live in or even near to these places.
Love everything about this. Amazing. On my list!
EXCEPTIONAL photography and editing! Way to go, to show off this paradise…
This is so Amazing love it
They tried it here in CO, only lasted a few years. The novelty wears off.
🙌🏽🙏 dude perfect
Inspiring stuff, Cheers. Now, I want to do the same in my area. Gotta earn your turns!
Awesome!
God those slowmos in the deep powder make me craving to be there so hard.
Bluebird Backcountry is closing its gates permanently...a Colorado ski resort with no lifts that "opened" in 2020.
i would have also included a brief segment on avalanche awareness and getting AIARE trained. avalanche terrain is unforgiving, even for the experienced.
Hi there! Good point, thank you for the feedback. We've just added links to our "How To Backcountry Series", including a video about avalanche training :)
That's the first thing I thought of. I remember reading about a guy setting off a big slide at Aspen Highlands during covid when the lifts were closed
As soon as you are in a situation where the any terrain is no longer constantly bombed by ski patrol and the snowpack is not constantly compacted by skiers it's a whole different ballgame
I don't think I'm gonna hit a resort this season. The place by me raised lift tickets from $109 to $139 this year and it's always overcrowded and shredded out by noon. I'm doing all back country and a cool hitchhiking spot that always has untouched pow if you know where to go
I took a WFR course with Emma earlier this year! Hi Emma!
beautiful
This is what skiing in the Rocky Mountains of the USA were like during the 1940's and probably much earlier. People would regularly drive their Jeep as high as they could up logging trails, then hike up the mountain and ski down.
Insanely beautifull
No lift lines!
HELL YEAH
but get it more inland where the powder is better
revy or kicking horse area
"The breathing." Damn right. I'm sucking wind.
It is a really interesting idea, out of curiosity how is the avalanche and other hazards are dealt with? Is it basically up to whoever is there and if they die they die ;) or there is a volunteer patrol of sorts? Seems like instead of clean cutting runs it would be a lot safer to thin them but leave enough trees to make chance of slides less?
How many people die per year? Was there any trouble with lawsuits and such?
Great video & wonderful powder video. Its a shame, though that there was ZERO talk of avalanche safety & consciousness.
Hi there! Good point here, thanks for the feedback. We've just added links to our "How To Backcountry Series", including a video about avalanche training :)
Love this big time! No it won't change the sport - not commercially anyway!
great next time our team will go to here
if that means shorter lines at the ski farms, im all for it
What model is the white backpack @4:10?
Hyperlite Crux
Bluebird Backcountry tried this near steamboat Colorado, it failed.
Bluebird Backcountry tried this in Colorado and only lasted 3 seasons
It certainly would weed out the overcrowding.
Whats the avalanche situation?
A Ski Area! No Splitboards!
Its not skiing though. Its hiking and then you ski 5% of the time on your way back to car.
Yeah it's like hiking in the snow but way more fun on the way down, it's great. It's ok, it's not for everyone, more for us. It's fine, have fun skiing in traffic on tracked out icy snow.
@@joeyrogerson83Yep i will have fun descending mountain 15 times and stopping for hot meal while you will be walking trough the deep snow all that time.
The latter sounds like punishment to me, but each to his own :D
Also not having to worry about avalanches is pretty appealing to me :D
Is it only for skier what about boards
Never heard of split boards? My sister uses one from the brand Voile and it works very well
Is this public lands? What about other users, i.e. snowmobilers?
Yes, it's on public land but it has a special designation for non-motorized usage. There are snowmobile areas nearby.
@@coloradohikertrash9958There’s no charge to ski at Hankin…
There are no patrols, there are no fees.
Shhhhh
If I had to walk for 2 hours to get a 3 minute run in I would feel like an idiot.
Looks amazing but two questions come to mind. Is he trying to make money on this, if so, how. Also, what are they doing to reduce avalanche risk. If this was in the US, the liability would kill the profitability. Us ski resorts have to jump through so many ridiculous hoops and people still sue them all the time. Europe and Canada are the only places this would work and I still question if you would be able to make money unless you're working with the parks department.
Hello this is what you can do in Europe everyday
No lifts. No grooming. No NY, Texas or LA Tourists. "F'n" awwwwesome!!!
Can I shuttle with my snowmobile?
What if ski videos were more about skiing than yakking😂.
No more talk talk videos.
No, not if people have to pay and hike themselves up. I personally and know many others who would not support this.
Good god, that conversation at around the 5:00 mark is so freakin’ pompous! It’s just skiing folks, just go have some fun and stop taking yourselves so seriously!
More people are into back country skiing because they were given money by the government and bought touring gear when the resorts were closed
Snow Hippies
In the tradition of ski Cinema with bad music.
In other news, mountains can be skied by hiking
Ask the touring only resort in Colorado that just failed
I see you're the "pour cold water on everything" type. This has already shown it can succeed as a non-profit, but as a community.
Ironic that they used skidos to get up that mountain and get these shots, isn't it?
Thanks for the poor assumption. Aside from regular passenger vehicles to access the base areas, there was no motorized transportation used in any part of this production.
Never heard of touring skis? You don't need a Ski-Doo to climb a mountain...
Snowboarding ??
I'd worry more about ski areas without snow, y'all.
This is like the Amish version of going skiing
TLDR: telemark skiing exists and is not new
this is like asking if a skyscraper without an elevator would transform the way we live lmao
I take it you've never heard the term "earn your turns".... that's OK because the less of you means more for us!!!
It literally would lmao
Couldn't of said it better.. stay at home on your couch and day dream of all the shit you think is impossible while we're out living it
Wow that got ugly fast. Easy tigers. The eternal search for powder. I get it, but hiking Odin's ladder in Alaska is not that simple.
Nah, I just ride the gondolas and chairlifts to the top of the mountain and save some precious time, because time is a valuable resource to some of us. Clearly not you though.
It takes people willing to do the saw work all year long to make it happen. Get a saw. Be prepared to do it yourself.
