- Do you want to learn how go go from the slopes out to the fresh powder snow in the backcountry?
We made this guide to help you who already knows how to ski in the slopes, proceed out to the backcountry.
This video is complementary to the written article and covers gear and how it is used in real situations.
Pontus from Ridestore Magazine tags along two local ski patrols and a pro skier when they are heading out to explore a new area.
We had some great times with loads of fresh snow, partly blue skies and a lot of Dope shredding.
We hear ski patrol Sebastian talk about the importance of safety gear and breaking down which skiing gear is optimal for backcountry.
Ski patrol Rasmus shows us how to perform an extended column test, to check snow stability and therefore current avalanche situation.
Pro skier Jesaias shows us some neat drops and chest deep powder runs.
In order to create a better skiing segment, the skiing part is filmed under the course of to days whilst the touring and "How to backcountry ski" part is filmed during one day.

Me watching this eating popcorn on my bed knowing damn well I'm nowhere near good enough to backcountry ski
Great video! Never actually seen the column test explained before. Just getting into backcountry skiing myself, can't wait for adventures like this!
Nice video! When I was a teenager I worked for a man named Paul Raymer who introduced randonee skiing to the United States. We were based in Colorado and would go up testing new equipment all the time.
Thank you! Great overview and we love the backcountry dog
Great video! Can't wait to try it out this winter!
exactly what i needed. great vid, thanks
Thanks for the vid. Nicely done! Informative.
Thanks guys, great video and sountrack!
Thank you for the inspiring video.
Great video guys!!!
Cool, safe & responsible! How rad!!
Nice job guys.
The pandemic brought me here
Great video!!!!!!
Love it!!!
Nice video thanks! Super helpful. Was just wondering- which mon tec jacket would you recommend for both downhill and backcountry skiing? I am mostly in the pnw, and canada.
Nice Vid Bro
Awseome ! Thanks a lot
Just a little adjustment for new backcountry skiers, you will get sweaty on your first hikes up. You'll learn the best kind of clothing and how fast you ski up after a few ski tours. Trust me almost everybody skis up way too fast on their first times.
Best way to learn these tricks is to find a small hikes first, for example 1-2 hours climbing.
I’m curious what’s the dangers of back country for beginners to intermediate skier!? Like tree wells ect?
Pontus 🤙🏻
Color grading is awesome! Was all of your video/audio through a GoPro?
Connor Ludwin yes i agree i‘m also interested in what camera they used
Miss you Ride Store
What do you do if you get to the top and it's too dangerous to ski, walk down?
What does that mean in the end of the video?
Good job guys ! I m a casual skier ... i wish to start backcountry skiing ! But i was wondering, can you use backcountry skies for regular downhill ski at ski resorts ? Also , is there some skin you can use for regular « cross country » , i wish to follow my wife few kilometers on her crosscountry machines tracks , i know the width of the skies probably wont go in the tracks but to follow will it work ? Glide onward and grip backward ? We are casuals , its more family tracks..
It will work. I only ride touring gear, even in resorts. I am thinking about making a video on this. Seems like this question comes up a lot. Look up Solomon shift bindings. Ski very close to an Alpine (resort) binding.
please give us the music you used in this video
👏🏻
What kind of bag do you recommend?
What kind of goggles were worn? They look 👌🏾
Oakley Fall Line and Line Miner :)
I am wondering where did your dog go? Did you bring him down with your backpack or what, instead of leaving him on the hill XD
They lift him, smh
Left them oof
Part of the avalanche emergency excavation drill 🐕 🥶 😲
How do you guys like the Montevideo ski gear. Does it it seem to do the trick??
@SNOW & POW Adventures awesome thank you. For the money, do you think its a decent buy? or maybe spend a little extra to get Gore-tex?
@SNOW & POW Adventures AWESOME! thanks for the information and heads up! You guys have been more than helpful!
Salut! Vous-est Quebecois?
How can the avalanche safety grear be no 5?
not all backcountry terrain has avalanche risk...e.g. 10-20 degree mellow terrain.
I’ve done avalanche training through national ski patrol...you don’t need a beacon if the entire terrain is mellow (terrain above you too). By mellow I also mean low risk in general (ie no tree wells). Obviously best practice is to always bring beacon though. For example, you’re not going to be worried about avalanches at all going through Stratton pond lol but that’s still considered backcountry...you’ll def need skis, skins, winter clothes, though.
What about helmets?
Denise Redäm: Personal choice woman. I always wear one when trees come into the picture but to each his/her own. The few good studies available show very little advantage to wearing a helmet. Which is surprising to me. I know I’d much rather take a header into a tree trunk or boulder wearing a helmet but again with actual impacts by skiers the stats show minor benefits wearing helmets. At best. A helmet has served me well numerous times in the trees (conifers) due to branch slap. I know my face would have been scraped up many times without the helmet and goggles. But that’s a comfort issue. Not a safety issue. I’m a downhill mountain biker. My full face and less coverage mtb helmets have saved me many times in crashes. I sustained head hits while mountain biking and whitewater kayaking that would have caused major head trauma that I biked and paddled away from without a “scratch” due to wearing appropriate head gear. I have never sustained a head hit while skiing that was traumatic or that would have been traumatic without a helmet.
@@mrsmartypants_1 sounds like you don’t ski very fast
One of them has their helmet strapped to his back pack 🤦🏼♂️ carries it all that way for nothing.
@@ski4life9 I don’t ski NE ice. Just soft snow and pow these days. Ever competitively race downhill? Ever buckle into real DH skis? Often an ice field going 90+ mph? I have. Back in the day. There you need a helmet. Seriously the stat injuries are very interesting concerning rec skiers resort skiing and helmets. Do you think Sammy needs a helmet?

@@mrsmartypants_1 yeah I honestly believe everyone should wear a helmet. Ask people who have suffered tbi’s or people close to those who have succumbed to head injuries. You are correct in stating that they have been shown to not always be effective in stopping concussions as it’s possible to become concussed even without direct impact to the head. However helmets do in fact consistently reduce the risk of lacerations, contusions and skulls fractures. Sitting in the snow bleeding in the backcountry isn’t fun. I can tell you with 100% certainty my helmet saved my head when I hit a tree. My helmet was turned to mush it felt like a kitchen sponge where it took the impact. Had I not had it I would have been dealing with a lot more than just my head injuries. And yes I grew up living in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. I raced for a long time still ski hard and fast and spend much of my winter in the backcountry. There’s a reason people like Cody Townsend and many others wear helmets.
Y’all and your fancy skins and touring gear, we just strap our skis on are backpacks and go lol
But what happened to the dog?
What about those of us who aren't expert downhill skiers, but want to ski tour because it's more fun than riding lifts?
Why is there no advice for us
This is one of those things...a little bit of knowledge is a very dangerous thing. Don't think you can learn this stuff from UA-cam. Take an avy class, and go with people that know what they're doing and can teach you. People die when they underestimate this stuff, you can never learn enough about it.
Do red g the red red reg 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Jude h Henderson have a good essay
Hn
... and don't forget: dress up in camouflage or bright white - so nobody will find you in the event of an accident ;-)
Dull as ditchwater.
You forgot the most essential piece of equipment... you guys should really wear helmets even if you think you are expert skiers, making a video about backcountry essentials and not wearing a helmet is pretty dumb tbh... stay safe!
Pretty far from an ultimate guide.
Thank you! Great overview and we love the backcountry dog
please give us the music you used in this video
Yes!
