  • In 1976, British alpinists Peter Boardman & Joe Tasker made the first ascent of the West Wall of Changabang, for the next four decades the route gained legendary status as climbers from around the world would come to attempt to successfully repeat this route.
In 2022, 3 climbers from the New Zealand Alpine Team would try their luck on this infamous climb. Will they succeed?

What Joe and Pete did over those 25 days on the mountain back in 1976 is without doubt one of the most impressive climbing feats of all time. The fact that it has taken 46 years to be repeated is testament to the futuristic nature of their ascent. Their accounts of trying to sleep in spindrift filled hammocks hanging by a single piton are the stuff of nightmares.

Wonderful film and story. I really appreciated the respect you showed for Pete Boardman and Joe Tasker. Great mountaineers and great writers. I would recommend their books to anyone as not only fine climbing literature, but fine literature period. Congrats on your ascent.

I love it when the history of the FA team(s) gets rolled into the story of the next or most recent ascent. It really does showcase a dedication to preserving that history and paying homage to those who came first and pioneered with minimal knowledge and far lesser technology in gear and equipment. Outstanding work, gents. Really well done! Thanks for sharing.

I agree. I am pleased they tied the history in with their own climbing story. It makes for an interesting story and pays homage to those who did it before them. I thought this was a quality short climbing film.

Has to be one of the premier achievements in Himalayan mountaineering. Stephen Venable ascent of the Everest Kangshun Face in1988..is definitely up there and the Central Pillar of Freney 1961 Don Whillans and Chris Bonington was a major step forward at the time. Great film.

I read The Shining Mountain several times when I was a teenager: It was very inspiring and exciting. TBH, finding this video was a treat, being one that focused on the climb, its history and execution, not on the personalities of the climbers or the spiritual meaning of climbing to them and all kind of other (excuse the implication) American BS that accompanies so many run-of-the-mill climbing documentaries. Good, solid, straight-forward and self-effacing (Kiwi) narration. I love it. (Former member of the Otago branch of NZAC.)

So enjoyed this vid and the fact that your team summited.
Always fascinated by returned servicemen climbers from WW1 who took to alpine climbing with relish, presumably wanting a 'peak experience' that didn't involve mass carnage on the battlefront, George Mallory included. Who knows what demons they were battling, let alone war injuries, and whether dicing with death lured them on.

Mountaineers are always some of the most soft spoken, kind folks. But… they’ve had to see and experience some incredibly brutal things in pursuit of summits.
Mountains rarely forgive a mistake. The risk/reward is almost foolishly high on the 8,000M peaks but I get it. Imagine seeing the curvature of earth while standing on your feet.

i look at high altitude climbers as an insane, obsessed, irrational group of individuals. you couldnt pay me enough for that misery and risk. whatever you get out of it escapes me tbh, i could care less what it feels like to be up at the top of a mountain
