Really appreciate hearing the other side to this discussion, Reggie. I suppose it varies for each gamer on an individual basis, depending on circumstance. Like for me, a bunch of my collection being boxed up 3,000 miles away from where I live right now weighs heavily on me. The memories these games give me make it all worth having them within arms reach, even if I rarely, if ever, actually play them. Modern conveniences have made the 'chore' of hooking up the old systems far less important to me than they used to be, and that's the sad reality I've been facing. SIMPLY SMASHING Video, Reggie!!

I have a game room, so collectin’ games is fun for me and not a chore to hook up the different consoles at all. I want to beef up my Genesis/SNES/NES collection, but emulators make it easy for me to not spend money and expand my library.

I agree with your sentiment of keeping games around because you have memories that are dear to you with some of these games. I am the same way with my collection and would only think of parting with it if there was a life situation that warranted it. Too many of my childhood memories have already been lost, I'd like to cherish what I have left. Good talk Reg!

What’s cool about a collection, it can be as little as 1 game. If you love that game and keep it no matter what you collected it! Value for games are not bad investment, the hobby is super popular and it’s more prevalent than ever with kids growing up with it in the mainstream. Cost comes into to play of the availability, demand, age, history, tangibility!

You should downgrade, theres a difference between collecting and hoarding , if you find yourself collecting mountains of games in bins and your no longer playing them you should sell. I find The extra space and extra funds would give some motivation and perspective of what kind of gamer or collector you are. I sold off all my wiiu collection that was just collecting dust, dont regret it one bit and now I focus more on SNES and have extra funds to get some of the more pricier games i want.

I don’t think retro games are useless, for me, I love my collection and most of the retro games I have are from my childhood just like you I never sold them, but it’s cool to go back and play the older versions of those games, I just like to remember the memories when I play older games and how I got them or what was out at the time and how I had to choose between which game I wanted from the store or opening the game in the car and flipping through the manual before I got home. But same here I have a lot of catching up to do in my collection by means of completing games, currently I’m running through Dragon quest XI 💪🏼 it’s just hard to complete games when so many great games are just popping up

I didn't really play video games as a kid so I collect them on many consoles so I can finally catch up to everyone. Sure it's frustrating to find consoles that still work, to hook things up, and find space to store things but I don't really care. I enjoy looking at them and dusting them off whenever I want to.
More importantly, I want to show my kid where video games started and how games have evolved. I think that's important for kids to see and experience.

My focus is just ps1 and ps2. Possibly may do ps3 and since ps3 has some rare exspensive ps1 classics digital it can save my money.. and thought about Original Xbox and Sega genesis. The reason ive started hubting old games because the future of gaming is pretty dark atm with predatory monitization and unfinished releases. And I feel we will be paying for patches soon too...

But I do keep my collection specific and only stuff I really want to keep.

I recently updated my collection on a collecting phone app that I use. The collecting bug hit me hard near the end of the Ps3 generation. Moving into the Ps4/XOne gen, I really got carried away. I currently own 450+ physical games for my Ps4. There's no way in hell I could ever complete 30% of those now but I do my best. Even if I don't finish the game, sometimes it's fun to just pop a game in and see what it's like. Not all of them are worth finishing. I feel this way about retro games too. Finishing the games isn't really a concern for me anymore, I'd argue I get almost the same satisfaction to put in a retro game and be like, "I can see why people loved this back in the day" or "I see where the devs heads were, when making this." I really wish I had the time to take them all on or at least experience them all but I'm just one man, with a full time job. Thankfully, I don't have kids because I can't imagine how much less time I'd have! Love your Channel Reg!

With the advent of consoles such as the Polymega retro games are getting a whole new life. With a dedicated retro console, you can play most any game anytime you want. It is so much easier and more convenient to pop a game from the shelf in and play immediately. And most importantly, you can get all the capture footage your heart desires.

I recently had two different people (best friend and brother in law) rake me over the coals for collecting old stuff. I like to collect obscure movies. Some are only found on VHS or DVD. Both of them tried to tell me how silly it is with new technology. I don't even have a big collection. What they really don't understand is that I don't understand either. I just get a kick out of watching an old movie like it would have been watched in it's time. I get a kick out of hunting for them at yard sales and on ebay. I could easily down load them, but it doesn't have the same kick to it. Opening a case. Hearing the sounds the tape and vcr make. I don't know. Just does it for me. - Keep it up Reggie ✌

You made the right call on the Virtual boy and Vectrex, especially if the Vectrex is collecting dust.
Good call on keeping the game room separate. I have a walk in closet that I converted to a Transformers shrine essentially and whenever I walk in there it brightens my mood, and I could see the same thing happening with your game room.
Also, mad impressive that you've completed around 60% of your collection.
They recently made a movie about those Scary Story books. It looks good!

    Love that Grandia Poster.
I think we can coin the term "Backlog Sickness" Defined as a type of guilt for having older games, or a backlog of games that you do not play as often as you would like. The guilt can drive you to associate negative feelings towards games within your collection and sometime cause you to sell your collection or dispose of it in some other manner. Sometimes this can lead to sellers remorse.

At the time it was awesome having it, but the real battle with having a AES system is getting the games. They were pretty pricy at the time I got mined so collecting for it was going to be insane especially since I was a cheap collector at the time. John already had a lot of the heavy hitter games for it along with commons, so I decided to sell it to him as I wouldn’t have to stress trying to find games on the cheap for it.

Most of my collection are original childhood gifts and purchases that I have kept over the years so letting them go at this time may not happen. I've been on about a 5 year kick to fully finish my entire collection. Started off with about 650 games unfinished of ~1000 and now sitting at just 55 left, and I find myself reaching a point where I just want to play a small selection of games super extensively and replay favorites. Been contemplating selling off the last 50 and not worry so much about trying to get through everything. I totally understand that feeling that lingers sometimes from having so many games in front of you and not being able to fully experience them to the length you'd always like.

Retro games aren't useless. In fact, it's the retro games that constitute the magnum opus of my collection. I don't have enough games to fill a room yet, but I'm getting there! Great video!

As a much younger collector... I appreciate this very much. I grew up when PlayStation were at their best with the PS2 and 3, but we always had an original PlayStation and even a N64. Now in my late teens, I've discovered old and new games for the generations I wasn't alive to see. I don't think I'll ever try to complete any minor collection for any system, but games in general have always given me an outlet for story-telling. I credit gaming for developing my creativity as I got older.
I feel the preservation of games is my primary reason for collecting. However, I worry I may never truly enjoy these games the way they deserve to be played, and that I've reached that point where responsibility must take precedent. My proudest possession is my Sega Dreamcast, and I look forward to discovering all that was achieved through this system. Thank you for showing me that games can still have a place in my life, responsibilities included. :)

Playing retro games to me it feels like getting into a time machine and going back to my childhood. I don’t care about the price and how popular it is, for me it’s all about nostalgia. Sad thing is that lots of retro gaming UA-cam channels are losing that nostalgic vibe to me. They’re too focused on what’s trending, prices, drama, etc. Those channels compared to 4 to 5 years ago, have completely changed, lacking that nostalgic vibe. Not all channels but most.

Collecting video games can be very expensive and take up a lot of space. A friend wanted to start buying a lot of Super Nintendo games because those were his favorite games as a kid. Not to collect them but to play them. I told him there was a way to get to play all the SNES games he wanted and not to have to pay a cent to get them and not have to store them. Download a SNES emulator and download ROMs of the games. He did it and said I saved him thousands of dollars. Plus I said no matter how many SNES carts of Chrono Trigger and Super Mario World he buys it is nothing new but exactly the same old game he remembers. I told him there are ROM hacks of these classics that hackers change the games and you can play new different versions of the games. There are fan retranslations of Chrono Trigger closer to the Japanese Super Famicom version and new versions where you can save Schala and one with a completely new area added. A completely playable 1999. I told him there are ROM hacks, at least a dozen of them, that are completely new versions of Super Mario World. The best reason not to get into buying a lot of original carts is you can play the games for free on ROM hacks on your computer with an emulator. I have told a lot of my friends the advantages of ROM hacks and they sold all their video games to get the cash and free up the space. All the Super Nintendo games you ever wanted on one little thumb drive AND completely new versions of old favorites. .

The impact of materialism, even in a non egotistical sense, can stil lweigh on the mind and spirit . Al lthe things I had growing up, I gave away or sold 90%, keeping few of my comics, my sega genesis and games, and few other things like some nostalgic t shirts, other games, family photos , etc. I always envy and wonder at collectors such as your self, Redge. Still though, if you do what you love, you will never work a day i nyour life, or want for greener fields. ^~^ SALUD!!!

Namely, Shadowrun (played that for HOURS back in the day)!
And games like Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Pirates Gold!, etc.

retro collecting can be worthless if your doing it for the money. as only a handful of games for each system is worth anything. now if you collect for the enjoyment and personal satisfaction of having the games then no its not a waste. if you feel you have too much you can consider getting rid of games that really dont mean much to you and just get the rom for it.

collecting is a hobby but also a fad, especially right now. these games may be worth money, at this moment, but once the hype dies down, will the games and consoles be worth the same amount we paid for them? probably not. whatever the next fad will be, whenever it happens, these games may indeed become worthless investments, if you consider game collecting an actual investment. it's all about supply and demand.

The more I get the less I play. I walk into my room and I’m over whelmed. I stare at all the games and I go “ oh cool this one...wait no let’s play this...no this one” and I end up watching tv instead. Or I’ll toss 5-10 different games in and only play for a few mins. Kinda blows but when the games are cheap I’m gonna get em. Period.

the thing about buying a house and taking 30 years to pay for it is that your monthly payments are less which frees your money up to do other things with it, plus the value of the property by the time youve paid it off is much higher than when you originally got the loan. comparing to videogames, the value drops by 25-50% as soon as you open it and even further when you play it and physical wear accumulates on the disc/cartridge. i feel like the optimum way to play retro games are as data, played on the original hardware on the appropriate tv with minor use of accessories to enhance the picture. sure i miss looking at the case and booklet but not enough to actually buy the used games complete off ebay lol

I don't go for complete sets of anything either. I only collect what means something to me, whether it be a game I think is fun or something that holds a nostalgic quality for me. It's never been about any other goal except for that. A $5 game like F-1 Race on Game Boy means more to me than a copy of Little Samson on NES because I actually had the game when I was a kid, remember picking it out at KB Toys in the mall, and enjoy it. Otherwise it is all just worthless junk. Value comes from perception. I'm sure the person who bought your Virtual Boy holds it in much better value than you did, and that is a good thing that these objects can be traded around like that. We're going to have a much harder time assessing worth once everything is digital.

    🙂 Heartfelt video Reggie.
I often feel the same way.
Then I remind myself of a Big Bang Theory episode I once watched, where Penny tells Leonard to grow up. He then philosophises about whether he's wasting his life or not. In the end.. moral of the story.. do whatever makes you happy, it's who you are.
(Yes, I sometimes watched BBT. Don't judge me 😀. Do however watch the hilarious, Garth Marenghi's Dark Place - and thank me later. Your spooky book somehow reminded me of that show)
    Enjoy your collection Reggie!

So many retro gamers and collectors have been putting videos up on this subject lately. The conspiracy theorist in me wants to believe this is all a conjoined effort to get the masses to lose interest in retro game collecting so the prices will drop and games will be widely available at flea markets and thrift stores again.

I’ve recently been collecting for the ps3, only things I’d play though. I missed out on a lot of that gen, because of social life in the mid 2000s and pc gaming from 2009 on. Also building a PS4 and psvr library, even though a lot of it is from digital sales. Haven’t really played on my pc a whole lot since I got my pro and 4k tv. My pc is definitely superior, just gotta get a new cooler. Could use a new cpu though, still rockin an i7 2600k and a gtx 980

It's funny you mention Horizon Zero Dawn, as it's one of my favorite modern games as well. Also, you mention that you usually wait a few years after a new system comes out? I'm similar but take it to a further extreme: I **never** buy a system until I can get it for under $100 used (note: the PS4 doesn't count; it was a birthday gift from a very good friend, and probably the most expensive present I've ever gotten). This usually means I'm about a generation behind, but that's perfectly fine with me since I have absolutely no interest in online multiplayer. In fact, I've been a generation behind from the very start -- my first system was a Game Boy Pocket given to me after my best friend upgraded to a Color, and my SNES was at a garage sale shortly after the N64 was released. And I *still* play them, so those retro games are definitely not 'useless' to me (despite the fact that I am also a big fan of emulation, and often use my hacked Wii and PSP systems as emulation machines -- a PSP makes a better GBA than an actual GBA, my dude)!

It depends if you collected for nostalgia or investing reasons. A collector will always see his games as priceless, regardless of the retro market. On the other hand, an investor might see gains or losses, depending on the same market. So yes, an investor might see retro games as worthless...

It's part of history, a relic of he past, be happy for it. I barely have had time to play my collection, despite it not being as huge as yours.

You could say it's stupid paying full price for games when you can get some games so cheap , I'm years behind playing games and picking Xbox 360 games from 50p to £2s.
Finally playing fable 2 for £2s and have to say it's much better than some newer games

  • @lordchaos9148

It started as a niche market among collectors and I'm sure it will end that way, people think the retro market is dying off because the games are becoming useless but most of the people leaving the hobbie were in it for the money. prices are stabilizing and scalpers and resellers are losing interest. I got sunset riders for snes maybe a week ago for a pretty decent price , a game I thought I'd never own because of how inflated the market had become.

I don't have that much time to play the older ones really. However, I do enjoy collecting them because one day...I think I will. Even if that is when I retire-- so be it. Also, I know we collectors are keeping that shit alive too. Those games are worth preserving. I feel almost like it's my responsibility to take care of things that could have been seen as garbage to someone else. I've been playing video games since I was in diapers and it's safe to say, even at age 32; it will continue the rest of my life. They're not useless but I do understand that updated technology is making these more difficult to go back to. I don't have the space in my 900sqft apartment to put a big CRT TV anymore. But the modding community is here for us and working HDMI into these old consoles, is truly mind-blowing. I may not have the time to play them much anymore but it's very easy for me to put on a shelf and dust them off occasionally because I know they'll be there when I am able to devote time into them again.

Reggie, Awesome video. Smash is an awesome guy. The retro thing holds so many memories for so many of us. My mom pawned all of my games back in the day for drug and alcohol money, and over the past 15 years I've been trying to get most of it back. If I don't have the money for it, I wont buy it. I don't owe a thing on my games. Lately, its been about introducing my wife to new games she never played growing up, and creating new memories with her and my son as he grows up. Retro games will never be useless in my mind. I will only do emulation if I actually own the game physically, but that's just me. Great job man, always proud of what a stand up and humble guy you are. Stay awesome my dude!
