There's more content with both nowadays, and they're released with stuff edited out for those who need to be the first on the block lol tell me how dlc isn't like the ultimate edition dvd of a movie. Just glad to see other people do this to anti-consumer industries. I mean if there is something original or a nice promo (juicy juice had Incredibles 2 with $7.50 off), why not? I will get bloodstained curse of the moon, looks awesome. And the bit about the internet: zold:out pissed me off with a single player beta that they closed but it's online only. So much for backin it on a Kickstarter, but at least I got to play for a month unlike mighty no 9 if you chose 3ds. Did like Shantae Kickstarter as it gave ultimate edition and free dlc. Remember how people were outraged by rumor that Ultra 64 (Nintendo 64) games were going to be $100 each. The rumor turned out not to be true, but today, you buy the game, but if you want to complete game with all the DLC crap, games are now, what, $120 for the complete versions of games.

    IMHO the reason new games released are so unfinished is because of the internet, yes i know no body ever said that but that is the real reason, because when you think a little bit, we didn't have fast and good internet connections back then, hell, 90% of the people i knew didn't have internet, including me, but as i said back then we didn't have connections so game developers didn't have a way to communicate with the gamer and....the issue of nowadays games: updating the game, they just didn't have that tech back then so when they made a game they had to make sure it is 100% finished because that will be it, nothing will be changed about the game after the release and they knew it, and of course there were alot of bad 8 and 16bit games but that is not because they didn't finish it, it was because they thought that it was completed, and that is the issue nowadays, developers know that they can fix the game any time the want through an update or something, and that needs to stop.

      It also has to do with how complicated the game is. In the 90s / early 2000s most of the more complicated games were on PC and they did have patches to download to fix problems. Think RPG like Baldur's Gate, Gothic 1-3, Deus Ex, and others. But you are right the internet is certainly an excuse for developers to ship a knowingly buggy version on the disc. All they need to do is have the patch ready by launch day. That is really irritating.

      How was Clock Tower complex? That is where the guy chases you around with scissors right? By complex I mean more RPG with a ton of inter connected quest lines and dialogue choices the game has to remember to properly continue the story and possibly branching paths. Those are harder to test because each play through is very unique.

    • @Miraak22
      @Miraak22 6 років тому

      statikcat well for the snes it was pretty complex, you have to remember that this game was a SURVIVAL HORROR game, ON THE SNES, i know it is not as complex as RPGS but for the snes it was.
      Edit:also the game had tons of mechanics it introduced that no game dev ever imagined he would be able to pull them off

    Well Reggie I agree with you pretty much 100% on this. The good thing is that there are more than enough older games to keep us busy for the rest of our lives. And things like fan translations and emulation have REALLY opened up the floodgates for games we can enjoy. The future may not be bright, but there is a renaissance of older gaming to take part in.

  • @paulcrowder
    @paulcrowder 6 років тому +3

    I think the most important point about wanting content on the physical media is that in 10-15 years, that content won't be available for download. Just look at things like the Wii eShop closing and games disappearing off the Xbox Live store. I bought Street Fighter II on Xbox Live years ago, then my old Xbox 360 died and I tried to download the game on Xbox One and it's not even available to download even though I purchased it. If they're doing this to entire games, you know they're going to do the same for DLC. Give me physical media ALWAYS.

      What a stupid and ignorant thing to say. There are plenty of games that are finished but developers choose to expand the story with expansion style DLC like old PC days. Some good examples I can think of are Horizon Zero Dawn, Witcher 3, Elder Scrolls games, Dishonored, and expansions aren't a new concept. Expansions have been around since the 90s PC gaming, it's just they are now stigmatized as being DLCs. Also there are many new games without any season pass or DLC like Yakuza games, Uncharted 4, Dishonored 2, YS 8, Persona 5 etc. Also most of the time the DLC is throwaway anyways and not even worth it for people who enjoy single player games and aren't into MP.

      This is going to be really interesting. For example when will PS3 servers shut down? What happens when you want to play your PS3 games that need patches? Hopefully Sony doesn't rely on PS Now to solve this. They could design a way to download final patch for a game from the web on PC and load it from a USB drive. They would need to update and test PS3 OS to implement this but that would probably be best long term.

It would be more ridiculous than things are now, but its not far off.

    That's the scary thing about DLC and game downloads. When you buy them you're just buying a license to play the game and technically the game company could potentially take that away at any time. On a side note, Free Ps plus games are great but if you want to stop your subscription someday you lose all those titles that you got through that service. Great video Reggie! Really got me thinking deeper about waiting on new releases. Luckily I downloaded Scott pilgrim back when it came out but I would have loved a physical copy.

    Actually Reggie I picked up Resident Evil VII Gold Edition, and everything was on the disc except Not a Hero (which is what the download required info was for), and it's free for all versions since from what I understand Capcom weren't happy with it, so that gamestop employee gave false information. So feel free to pick it up.
    However Arcade Edition is indeed a voucher, BUT they were in fact on the disc that comes with arcade edition, they just have a lock over them until you use the voucher, arcade mode was also on the disc....yet the story mode still required a separate download..... So they in fact made new disks for the game, they just didn't enable the content to be used without a voucher.
    Also a Injustice 2 complete edition has been out for a few weeks Reggie! haha! It's called Legendary Edition I think.
    BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle is probably the biggest fighting game DLC offender. Only comes with half the roster on disc, the other half is paid DLC, and the big kicker is the game is a sprite dump like the old Capcom vs. games, so they're selling people already made characters as DLC. In fact they're actually reselling DLC characters from the previous BlazBlue game as DLC in this.
    Anyway I agree, this whole voucher crap for physical complete games is getting old. However what's going on with Switch is even worse, in which physical games don't even come with the complete game on the cartridge, so you have to download part of the game before the cartridge even works at all. Plus of course Capcom releasing collections on the Switch, yet making the larger file size games vouchers (Resident Evil Revelations Collection, Mega Man Legacy Collection, Mega Man X Collection).

    Unfortunately physical media is on the way out. I hate it too. What happens when our clouds and hard drives all breakdown? But I think we're almost to the point where every game will be digital. Producing physical copies probably hurts a company's bottom line. It costs money to make the game, to decorate a box, to ship the final product. Department stores take a portion of the revenue from sales as well.
    I wish Scott Pilgram and Marvel vs. Capcom Origins had physical copies. I missed out on those.

    Unless there's some sort of guarantee that they release a complete version with all DLC on the disc, I don't think that's the main reason to wait for buying new games. Most of these "complete" versions don't have their DLC on the disc anyways.
    For me, the main reason to wait is the fact that games these days get a price drop so fast. Look at Ni No Kuni 2. It's out for like two months or so and it's already 34.99 over here.

    Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition is the same. It's the vanilla disc with a single use download code inside. Was quite annoyed but thankfully Royal Edition physical was £19.99 when the DLC combined would have been around £40-£50.
    Preservation is a big concern when this content isn't on the physical disc and you're relying instead on a server that's going to go offline sometime.
    It's also training people not to buy games on day one, people wait for the inevitable "complete edition" and it hurts those initial sales.

  • @JRRSantore
    @JRRSantore 6 років тому +4

    I totally get you Reggie. But it seems the problem is many games are almost 50GB now even before patches and if I remember correctly Standard Blu-Ray discs can hold up to 50GB. So a game like Final Fantasy XV which is almost 100GB with all DLC and Patches installed can't fit on disc and of course the companies are not gonna manufacture a 2nd disc so they give you a season pass code. Think about it, last gen games were much smaller GB wise so if it was a 360 game it usually came with a 2nd disc cuz it was a cheap standard possibly dual layer DVD and PS3 games were Blu-Ray and games were small enough GB wise for them to be able to put the DLC on the disc.
    EDIT: I'm not trying to give an excuse nor do I AGREE with this practice I am just stating this with a publishers mindset. They want to unfortunately save as much $$ as they can while MAKING as much $$$ as they can. It"s sad and BELIEVE ME I was furious when I bought the GOTY Edition of Dragon Age: Inquisition only to find out not only was the DLC NOT on disc BUT all the season pass codes expired 1 year prior to my purchase. So I get the hate I was just trying to explain it from a tech standpoint

I just play stuff on Steam now. Although they still have similar practices, but at least it's expected on a platform like that. I really do miss being able to wait for a game, buy it, and get the intended game, good or bad, and just run with it. Being a software developer myself, even I see how we become way more dependent on that mindset...YES on the indie games. They aren't tainted by corporate minds at that point. Pure love. • @MotherKojiro
    @MotherKojiro 6 років тому +1

    I wish more people would follow this advice. DLC was a great idea; back in the day, there were 3 or 4 different versions of Street Fighter 2 that came out for the SNES, and each time, it was a fairly minor update with a $50 price tag. That could've been easily and more cheaply fixed with DLC, had the technology been there. Pay $10 to play as the bosses; pay $5 for some new moves and Turbo Mode; that sort of thing. Instead, Capcom is STILL charging full price for new versions of Street Fighter, and then tacking DLC onto that, instead. Companies are expected to release unfinished projects, ram you for all the extra content, then release a "Game of the Year" Edition that is either full price or even a discounted price for the full content of the game a year later. It also doesn't matter anymore if a game is buggy; they can just fix that later, so they shove it out the door. If everyone would just wait for that, companies would likely stop these practices. Vote with your wallet!

    I totally agree with you, unfortunately I don't see it changing, only getting worse. It's frustrating as hell.

    It goes along with game preservation. If you have to download additional content to a game, when the servers go down, you can't get that content anymore. If it was all on the disc, you have an option to access it forever

    Same here I don't want to be online 24/7 half the game companies nowadays are just greedy mainly EA and bungie. Single player games will never die to me.

    Amen. This repackage w/codes practice is one of the more disrespectful practices of the industry today. What happens in twenty years when servers for most games are gone for a game you are purchasing for the first time, or wanting to replay one you've removed from your system? You're left with an unfinished experience... all because the company wanted to save on cost.

    I agree! It is very rare I buy a game new. in the past 3.5 years, the only new games I bought were MK11 / Megaman 11 / Assassin Creed Origins on PS4 and Starlink / Breath of the Wild / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch.

    I bought Fallout 4 on release, packaged with an Xbox One, sold it 4 months later because 80 dollars a game Canadian plus extra content is over $120 fucking dollars. Nintendo is literally the last breath (no pun intended) to classic plug n play fun gaming. DLC, Season Passes, Skins/MTX. Very saddening

    I used to buy AAA games at launch but now that game prices have sky rocketed to 90$ here in Canada, Montreal, I never do anymore. Paying 90$ for any game is outrageous. I just wait for a price drop or sales.

    I hear you on this. I'm at the point where I rarely will ever buy a new game. I feel like I'm spending too much on a half done game for $60
