    I get a lot of questions about when or what is a good time or system to collect for and decided to talk about it in this video.

    Sup Reggie! Yes, collecting at the end of a system’s lifecycle is the best time to collect games for great prices. But I also feel IMO that collecting for a wide variety of systems is good too because your mood may vary on what you want to collect for. Sometimes I’ll be on a Dreamcast kick, and other times I want to seek out DS games. It just depends. But if a system gets too expensive to collect for, I’ll take a hiatus from it and collect for a different system. It’s nice to have that flexibility.

    I bought a Wii U this week. Everyone in my area seems to have bought a Switch in December and Wii U prices just plummeted. Now the trick is guessing which of the games aren’t going to be ported to Switch.

      Another trick is guessing which games will be worse on Switch or not have any upgrades.
      If it is likely to just lose Miiverse functionality. It doesn't matter since you can't use Miiverse on 3DS or Switch anymore.
      There are some cases where the multiple screens (primarily in multiplayer like ZombiU but also some single player cases) pays off in spades. It may make the game a little less playable or lower the skill ceiling on other systems.

    I think beginners should start buy just buying physical copies of their fav games they no longer own that's affordable. There is one person i'm subbed to (not naming names) but he buys load of shit sports games he says he doesn't like in his video for the sake of getting a complete collection. I highly recommended not buying games for the sake of just having them.

    • @FireMrshlBill
      @FireMrshlBill 5 років тому +1

      Yep. If you are thinking of getting into "collecting", don't. Just get the games you plan to play in the very near future and as you beat them, decide if its something really worth keeping or not. Be brutally honest. If you don't think you will replay it, especially in the not so distant future, and you didn't develop some nostalgic bond to it... why keep it? Your "collection" will slowly grow organically, you won't have a large backlog that you may never get through (I know from experience) and you will spend less money overall. Even buying games at hiked up eBay prices will be cheaper overall if you do that, especially if you beat it and turn around and sell it while it has similar value to what you paid. Not everyone needs to be a collector or "archivist", and unless you have that "love of the hunt" that the serious collectors have, why get started? As I am paring down what is on my shelves from over the years, I just want to have a small, personally curated collection and a (hopefully shrinking) backlog.

      That is just one way of collecting. I am glad it works for you but it isn't for everyone.
      Myself, personally, I don't count digital/downloaded games as part od my collection. However some people do. Neither way is right or wrong.
      Part of me would like to be able to accept it as part of my collection as I have over 350 games on my Xbox 360 and at least 200 of them are unique.
      It's nice to have then. But in my mind they don't count towards the collection.

    • @FireMrshlBill
      @FireMrshlBill 5 років тому

      Pickster UK it depends on why you are collecting. To have games to play or to physically have stuff on your shelf. The downside of digital is if the store stops supporting downloads, then there it goes. However with too many modern games that need day 1 patches, some physical games are near useless or perform poorly as well if the service goes away.
      But ya, everyone should do what works for them, it’s all good. However, if someone wants to get into actively “collecting” rather than just buying the games they want to play soon, they should really ask themselves why they want to get into “collecting” over just organically growing a collection as they game. No judgement from me either way, just to many people get sucked in and end up spending more time collecting rather than playing. Which is fine if that’s the hobby they enjoy. Just kinda like people that spend more time tinkering with their gaming PC than actually gaming on it. I tend to fall into both those categories myself and have to keep myself in check and remind myself why I got into the hobbies in the first place.

    Agree 100% on the #1 piece of advice you gave in this video: previous generation is where it's at for collecting. Games are plentiful and cheap, and if you're not obsessed with following the latest trends, you can have a spectacular amount of fun for a fraction of what your friends paid for the exact same games a few years ago.

    • @PicksterTG
      @PicksterTG 5 років тому +2

      There are two main camps of people that buy games that they don't end up playing.
      The first are the people that just buy and buy and buy. They buy because it is a game they don't have or for it to gain value in the future or suddenly it is THE game to have.
      The other are the people that have an intrest in playing every game they buy. Only a few years later and there is just no way they can actually play every game in their collection.
      I am squarely in that second camp. There is no way I will ever play every game I have. But pretty much every game I have is a game that I want to play. So while some will never get properly played, they are always up for the choice.

    Just remember, when I was a kid in the 90's it was pretty damn easy to get a lot of the games that are selling for a lot of $$ now, and that was before the internet connected us to an endless supply of games. As Reggie pointed out, the PS2 games that are now considered collectibles were at a time selling dirt cheap. The point is, there is no stopping time. People seem to not have the foresight to see that in the future the shit we have now will one day be dated and collected. The future is trending towards all digital (which I hate) and the only thing stopping it now is the limited access many areas still have to the internet.

    People are very aware of the good side to collecting for 360 over the PS3. they work on the Xbox One often times and they often look or run better than the PS3 version. A good aspect of the PS3 that a lot of people are not aware of, is that blurays don't scratch as easily as DVDs. So if you want to know your game is gonna keep working 10 years from now, i'd feel safer about my PS3 games.

    There's no hard and fast rules here because different people have different ideas and/or goals with their collections. Anyone who insists certain things are good and others bad need to broaden their mind.
    I agree with the most part of ideas in the video though.
    What I did when I started getting a little more serious about collecting was to pick a format whose price was bottoming out (in my instance xb360), where you could often pick up 10 games for $20 (as a random, albeit common type figure).
    A couple of those type lots, plus an extra specifically chosen title or two for another system per week and you quickly end up with a reasonable collection of decent titles. Cheap doesn't necessarily mean bad titles either (although you *will* end up with multiple copies of fifa when you buy in bulk).
    After a while I added 2nd, 3rd, and 4th systems to those I was buying games in bulk for. This helps with variety of choice, so you can keep adding worthwhile titles at times the bulk buys are slimmer pickings.
    The absolute biggest, most useful tip though,...... be patient. There's 10's of thousands of good games out there and that 2nd hand title that you want, but are reluctant to pay $40 or $50 will turn up cheap eventually.
    In the meantime you can spend that $40 or $50 on 20 games that are equally good. At other times those sorts of titles work their way into bulk lots for cheaper than individual item is. For example I've been wanting Splatoon for Wii U for a few months, but it's constantly $30-ish. Never stopped wanting it so kept looking out and eventually found it for $15, but that $15 also included Mario Kart8 and New Luigi Bros.
    The whole, "retro games are expensive" thing is a misconception. A misconception by those who simply type the name of the title they want into ebay. Probably the single most naive plan of attack humanly possible :-)

    Personally, I started collecting games when I was a child buying games that I wanted to play or games I wanted to play again now being an adult. Nostalgia plays a big part in game collecting but start with the games from your childhood then slowly build up to a variety of older games and newer games. You should never compare your collection to someone elses and also collect the games you are going to play. If your strapped for cash buy games at the end of a generation and also let people know you collect games. You never know when someone is getting rid of their games. Also check charity shops/ discount shops or even car boot sales. Do your research and enjoy your collection.

    Great video. I buy the games I want to play for every system. No system I own is a failure, upgrade or downgrade. I do the research, I consider finances. I watch longplays. I don't buy every deluxe port or special edition, and I get rid of games I do not play or play enough. Simple for my life, but everyone has a right to be different. It can start getting mental real quick. My approach keeps my collection as fine tuned and precise as a scalpel's incision. I simply don't want or need every game, but every game I do buy I'm going to play as much a possible.

    There are many types of collectors. Some people are set collectors that will never play all of the games. Some people only collect the games they enjoy or enjoyed. Some indeed like to have a nice curated collection of expensive title to show off. All are perfectly viable reasons to collect and I don’t want to say one way is correct, instead I say do you. Do whatever makes you happy. I’ve found myself somewhere in the middle. I once believed why have these games if you aren’t playing them and then I had kids. Now I still have the games but no time to play as many as I would like. They mean something to me though and I enjoy sharing that with my kids and my nephews. My oldest nephew begs to go to Uncle Tim’s house to spend the night playing my games which is really fantastic for me.

    I just finished off what I want for the PS3, there maybe a few stragglers that I dont know about but for the most part it's done. I've been big on the Wii U and Original xBox. I dont collect new in box systems so the Wii U being $700 doesnt bother me. But I've been pick up the games at GameStop for cheap, almost got all I want for that one.. The origina xBox tho is a different story, I'm addicted to that thing.. I'm buying games that I probably will never play again outside of the first hour or two I played then so far. Once I'm over my addiction I'll probably sell some of them off, but they are so cheap right now. Over the past year I went from like 15 games to over 70.

    My tip is to not get too tempted by the cheaply priced games.
    You're going to end piling up a massive backlog and you are not likely to play any of them.
    If you're going to collect games, I suggest you try to set reasonable goals and buy the games that you want like all games from a particular company on a certain system.
    You also need to be wary that the original release versions of games will and can get expensive; especially if you want original version (i.e. not Greatest Hits) in factory sealed condition.

    You are very wise for your age, the thing you say make a lot of sense. If your not going to play the game, why own it. When I find a game I don't need for cheap I will trade or sell it. Holding on to games you don't need just makes it harder for someone who wants it to get it. Drives the price up. Sad when gamer meets collector.

    Even though my passion lies with collecting for all Sony consoles, I picked up an Xbox 360 for £10 about four months ago and love collecting for it (around 70 titles at present). I've picked up amazing titles for around £2-4 from eBay and CEX. For RPG and horror games it is one of my favourites.

    Awesome tips! I generally try to collect only games that I used to own, have enjoyed, or want to actually play. But I have to admit, the more I accumulate, the more I want to keep growing it haha! Sadly games and systems can get pricey where I’m from so that has definitely helped keep my buying to a minimum 😆

    I go hunting for used games and buy what I would actually want to play (occasionally something for trade if its a good deal) the backlog is quite large because I have little spare time for gaming. Job lots from Ebay is a good way to get a decent number of varied titles if you're starting to collect for a new system, look for someone selling off their own games and not a collector dumping duplicates or a retro game store dumping the almost worthless filler.

    A video game collector can have several meanings. Just because he doesn't "play" them doesn't mean he isn't a collector.

    Hey Reggie! Solid advice , I'm only starting out and literally doing just that just dabbling in the last Gen consoles and only buying what interests me ! the only exception is the Sega Genesis/Megadrive and I'm only after a small handful of games for that anyway.

    I didn't even buy a WiiU until after it was discontinued and I actually picked it up for free and got all the games super cheap because everyone was saying how garbage the Wii U was.. but it actually has some really great games!

    If starting a collection. My personal advice is to buy games that you want to play or at least try, however don't feel bad if you don't get round to playing everything.
    If you buy something that you want to play and the value of the game changes it doesn't matter because it was not bought just for it's value.
    Try not to tie your self worth to the size or value of your collection. Managing to snag that game you have been looking for, for months can feel really good. Same for getting a great deal. But if something changes (with your collection) then it's very easy to get dragged down mentally.
    Everybody can't have everything, and that's ok.
    I know everything I have said is common sense but before you know it, it's very easy to get swept up.
    As for what to start collecting right now. Xbox 360 and PS3 offer great value. In terms of games that are already deemed as collectable, the value is already up but for next to nothing its possible to get all the Uncharted games or all the Gears of War games for almost pocket change. Recently I paid £1 for each of the Resistance games and £1.50 for each of the Uncharted games (on average). These are clearly not hard to find collectable games but they are great games to play and they help full out a collection. It would be very expencive to have a collection of games that just consisted of rare and collectable games.
    Game on and collect what you want!

    • @TylerMBuller12
      @TylerMBuller12 5 років тому

      Agreed on that. Idk why people go for complete collections. I just try to get all the good games that I'll actually play. Whats the point of buying a bunch of barbie games and sports titles for the sake of having some meaningless "complete" collection. I just want fun games to play not shovel wear. Plus it's cheaper then going for games you won't play any way.

    Man your right. I started getting more games when no one was buying them. I'd go for systems that where dirt cheap. U watch in 5+ years PS3 games are gonna be heaps, hell some are climbing already. Its easy to buy heaps of crap ones too. I bought like over 20 PS2 games a month ago and looking at them now theres only a few there that are ok. Nice vid m8!!!!!!!

  • @rj5485

    Brought us another Great vid, thank you. In my opinion, games aren't worth nearly as much as gold or diamonds etc but ONLY as much as what a store would sell at MSRP brand new. My gripe when building a library is actual scalpers buying up games and charging people sometimes 10 fold, basing it off demand and popularity. There is NO game worth 100s of dollars on this earth it's just that people charge what people are WILLING, rather reluctantly, to pay. That's it. If someone pays 300 for Little Samson doesn't mean it's actually worth 300. This stuff should depreciate over time. When I got back into retro I was dumbfounded at these arbitrary and astronomical obscene prices...like wha??! Nah! Not paying that. Thank God for companies like ANALOGUE who produce Super Nt, Nt mini, and soon-to-be-released Mega Sg. With those devices I can download a chock full of these classic games on a sd card for free and play them in the best hd quality ever. Plus these sytems can play and upscale real physical games.

    Good advice Reggie, stay one gen behind to get the best deals. Fortunatly i got most of the old 16bit era games that i want when they were dirt cheap. Ive got games i spent £3 on that are now worth over £50. Prices are crazy right now and it doesn't look like thats going to change anytime soon. Recently ive been selling games im done with as much as ive been buying new games. Decided to get a 3DS recently because the prices seem decent now that everyone is moving over to the Switch. The only really expensive 3DS games ive seen are niche JRPG dungeon crawlers like some of the Shin Megami Tensei Games.
