It's just proving that smaller teams, with smaller budgets and bigger passions, make better games and movies. Once your doing it just to make a dollar it doesn't produce the same product, you actually have to give a shit about these things in order to produce a good product. We play all these new games and can tell it's just the same backwash shit they give us over and over again trying to replicate what a team with passion and a creative idea did 20 years ago.

Dealing in USD, inflation between 2013 an 2020 was 11.1%. Inflation between 2020 and 2024 was 21.1%. Something that would have cost $500 in 2020 would cost $605.75 in 2024. Something that would have cost $500 in 2013 would cost $555.49 in 2020. This economic trend is not exclusive to gaming.
I just came to the epiphany that gaming is simply too big for its britches. Too many shareholders that heard about how lucrative the industry is, jumping in and making demands without any idea of how to make a fun video game. The indie market is thriving because of its detachment from the more money hungry side of the industry. They just want to make good games.
The indie market is “thriving” because so many people make small games and the vast majority of them fail and are financial disasters for the people making them. So every now and then you have a gem.

Happened from PS2 to PS3 and it happened from Xbox 360 to Xbox One. It seems companies can't maintain their platforms when profits and success is increasing. They get too greedy and than have to play catchup again. Only difference is Microsoft screwed up one of the most important generations. Bungie is the same, they release a lackluster game, release an incredible expansion only to follow it up with something mediocre again (over and over). These companies only perform when they have to. It took Xbox really long to recover and still isn't recovered. I felt good about the platform though after the latest Xbox Game Conference.
Although the PS5 is a great console, the issue isn't necessarily cockiness or arrogance, the issue is games take 5+ years to make and cost hundreds of millions of dollars. This is industry wide issue.
@@briquesbtshighly doubt it The ps5 hardware is sold at break even, the money is on accessories and licenses for games sold. And, the lack of games and the high dev costs, means they're probably not making as much as with the ps4 (much cheaper hardware, wayy more software available)
Sony choosing to move to California, and abandoning Japan Studio was the dumbest choice the company ever made, especially because Japan Studio also helped with one of the best Playstation games, that tons of people still praise and wish a remaster and sequel "Bloodborne".

@mateivlad4425 Consoles will always be the baseline hardware level for game development. Most games that are released today are also released on last gen consoles, so even on high end PCs or 9th gen hardware, it will still feel like a ps4 game, just a 4k 120fps ps4 game on pc.

With both consoles actively monitoring what you say 24/7, all it takes is one wrong insult for you to get your account banned, and to lose access to every game of yours.

We're at the point in gaming where exclusives are going to die. Game development is at the point where it's too expensive to justify exclusivity. Nintendo can get away with it because the people buying their consoles aren't looking for "next gen" graphics and gameplay, so the games are a lot cheaper to make. The people who mainly play PlayStation or Xbox are looking for "next gen" experiences. Those experiences are expensive. Consoles are becoming what they were always heading towards; a cheaper alternative to buying a PC. Sony and Microsoft are businesses. They didn't decide to bring exclusives to PC out of the kindness of their heart. It's because that's the only thing that makes financial sense.
People are going to be exposed to the harsh reality that they really are clowns when they start shitting on one plastic box in favor of the other when the day comes where there are no exclusives. I share the same mentality, gaming as it is cannot stand on its own with exclusive titles. Unless they double the price to 140 a game.
@TheAfterglowProject Yeah, people already take issue with $70 games. Imagine if they had to pay the amount required to make exclusives profitable. There are games that sell 2 million copies that lose money being sold at $60/$70.
To be fair, I'd say the reason why Nintendo can get away with exclusives is the fact that those games are developed by their own internal studios and due to their console being much more weaker compared to PS and Xbox they can sort of get away with the fact that they aren't as graphically impressive companies to the competition, though it also helps that almost all of Nintendo's games have a very stylized look and don't go for a photorrealistic style, not to mention that their budgets are probably much more lower than traditional AAA or even AA games
I feel that the kind of money and time AAA games take these days is unsustainable. The same exact thing is going on in Hollywood with big movies. They cost so much time and money to make that chances are you going to be losing a lot of money if it isn't a smash hit. And sometimes, even when it is a hit, they still lose a ton of money. And instead of switching to a more reasonable strategy, they lay off employees and close studios. Big budget games are the same way. They've grown too big in scope and money for their own good. Obviously, you still get the increasingly rare super hits that only huge studios and money can pull off. But they are so difficult and rare. Yet they still try all the time, leading to failure and the shutdown of the studios. Frankly, it's stupid. This is definitely why Sony has started putting their games on PC. Despite the mass casual audience consumption and praise, they still struggle to make money off of them. I wouldn't be surprised if some of their biggest PS5 games so far have failed to even make a real profit yet. Because they spend SO much freaking money on them. Have you seen Spiderman 2s budget!? Where the crap did all that money even go! To a slightly larger reused map and slightly better graphics!? FOR 300 MILLION DOLLARS!!? Does that number even include the marketing budget? It's not sustainable at all.
the fact that this console is still over 350 dollars is wild to me. there are literally ZERO Incentive to own one when the console has zero games and is still expensive.
if the switch's successor is similar price, has backwards compatibility and good launch titles, then day 1 it's already better to get than the ps5 5 years into its generation
It's still selling well, over 60 million units. The PlayStation brand is strong, and these "omg PS5 sucks" genre of videos (which seem to be rampant on youtube lately) ignore key issues with modern game development that are impacting everyone. Games take way too long to make, and therefore also cost way too much money. Former PlayStation CEO said games must become cheaper and be made faster and that console exclusivity when games cost 200 million dollars becomes your Achilles heel.
That's why I completely switched to PC two years ago. One of the best decisions I've ever made. I'll keep my XBSX for GTA6 and then I can finally ditch consoles once and for all.
The insanity of the fact that Sony's answer to the switch's portability... was a Wii U tablet. How out of touch, unaware of their competitors do they have to be, to put out a product that Nintendo course corrected in the last generation and Steam, clearly, avoided?
Have you actually looked at how many people have bought the Portal? And how well rated it is amongst those who have one? You'll be hard pressed to find a single negative review because the people who bought them have good reason i own one. It's too expensive, but for anyone that likes digital purchases, has kids, or an hour free at lunch, it's an awesome product. Sony puts out press release after press release praising the sales figures & quote, "Demand continues to exceed our expectations." To the point scalpers are now seeking them to sell at higher than retail price due to such high demand. But sure you can keep believing it's another Sony failure.
PS Portal has a market. It copied the Gamepad because it was great. The hardware had nothing to do with the financial flop. It was a radiotechnical marvel and very convenient to use. I've played many of the games on the Gamepad. It's nice to play Switch and streamed Xbox games off-TV in the bed. If Sony games would still cater to me I would consider a Portal I agree on Sony being out of touch with popular demand. It shut down Studio Liverpool and even Japan studio were mostly laid off. Team Asobi just showed what marvels we lost due to the bad decisions of Sony. Just for the historical accuracy judging the Wii U is a stereotype. It's like saying SEGA course corrected bc the Dreamcast was a bad system. The Wii U was a GameCube and a Wii 3in1 hardware and had unique DS like two screen and asynchronous multiplayer games and many exclusives. Nintendo messed up the advertisements and deals with 3rd party studios so it flopped on the market. The Switch although more portable is in a lot of ways a step down and though the Joy-cons are nice the Wii U Gamepad sticks were normal sized and had no drift.
Shutting down Japan Studios and no more Gravity Rush is second only to Netflix cancelling Dark Crystal on my list of "I will ALWAYS hold this against you." Unless we count employee mistreatment, then it's three

most of the layoffs in the gaming industry right now are not because the companies are struggling but rather because the people up top can't comprehend why the insane growth during covid is not persisting. Most gaming companies are still very much very profitable. The PS5 is currently still the best selling console (outselling the switch on a weekly basis) despite no games, so from a management perspective it does really seem that people will buy the "upgrade" anyways hence the PS5 Pro
This is so true. I got a Ps5 for Christmas last year and for what? No exclusives and Sony literally telling me “Just got the console? Too bad no new exclusive games until next year” and at that point I’m gonna be picking up that rumored switch 2 and its games, so Sony already lost my money.
I get wanting more of the older variety of Sony games during PS3 and PS4 and that they are missing smaller titles BUT this "what do i have this for there is nothing to play" mentality is beyond me. If you got a console is so you can play games on it, not to wait for that specific game that can only be played on that console. And in that department there are dozens of games released every month. Just play games and have fun. And even that game list of few exclusives is double if you consider that many titles are excluded just because they made a PS4 version as well. Sackboy isn't there, God of War isn't there, Horizon isn't there, Kena Bridge of Spirits isn't there, Grand Turismo 7 isn't there etc. All those are games released during PS5 life circle but they made versions for PS4 as well so they don't get put on the list. PS2 is loved by all and praised for the rich game library but during PS2 Sony didn't release that much first party. It was mostly third party games. But people didn't care because they went to the PS2 shelf on the store and had all types of games to pick and play and they were happy. No one sat there calculating if the console was worthless because Sony released only one or two games that year that was actually made by themselves. Why do people treat consoles so different now? Why don't you just get excited to play games and you only get excited if it is some first party game?
@@sumomaster5585This. I exclusively bought Nintendo for years because of how many exclusives they had and the variety in exclusives. If I’m gonna get another console on top of a switch, I need reasons to play it. The Ps5 isn’t offering me a reason atm. I’ll probably use it until I can afford a PC at this point bc I can get all of the games on Ps5 and more.

It all started when Sony Computer Entertainment (the division of Sony in charge of the PlayStation brand) became Sony Interactive Entertainment. Their U.S. and Japan-based offices would be merged, and they are now headquartered in California. Then they started censoring games in around 2018, namely Japanese games with sexualized women. Then they released the pathetic PlayStation Classic mini console. From there, it continued to get worse and worse and worse and worse for PlayStation. And here we are today.
@@RiasatSalminSami Well you're half correct. Stellar Blade was censored and is a fantastic hack 'n slash. But the ones with ugly women are the run-of-the-mill AAA schlop.
I'm just surprised their fans never hold them accountable, and instead deflect to insulting Xbox. When MS f'd up the announcement of the XB1, fans spoke with their wallet & jumped ship. But when Sony continues to show they'll just keep screwing you over, they excuse it & even attack pro-consumer things from other companies? - Being transparent, Microsoft announces most 1st party games will be cross-gen for the first couple years, drawing the ire of the internet. Sony responds with "we believe in console generations" & recieves all the praise.... Then they proceed to release nearly ever 1st party game cross gen on PS4 anyway. - In an unprecedented move, Sony INCREASES hardware prices 2 years *AFTER* launch! - Charges you a $10 upgrade fee for some PS5 versions of PS4 games you already own - Raises prices to $80 on *BASIC ONLINE!* - Increasingly releases games on PC, despite fans mocking MS for doing that years earlier - Retools PS Now & PSN to more closely compete with Game Pass, despite fans insulting GP users as "broke" and mocking them for not buying all their games - Remakes & "Remasters" of recent games, including ones with remasters already & the most recent entries in a series! And this is after years of other issues (like being pulled kicking & screaming into allowing cross play/cross saves), releasing Spider-Man 2 as their only AAA 1st party developed game for 2023 & 2024, and buying 3rd party exclusivity to keep games off other platforms. Meanwhile, the "Xbox has no games/Xbox only has Halo, Gears & Forza" crowd are pre-ordering & buying up MS games on PS5 like crazy... none being Halo, Gears or Forza? Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded... games that existed this whole time on Xbox, proving they were ignored only for fanboy reasons. Oh, and you keep hearing people brag about "whole slate" coming to PS5. "Whole slate" of what? I thought Xbox had no games? So nothing is coming, right? And if those games do come & are successful, it just reaffirms that they were unfairly dragged through the mud for console wars nonsense. Both of these companies are a complete circus. Lack of variety is my biggest problem with this generation and last generation. Variety apparently died in the 7th gen.
Sony has brand recognition, and they know it, and I have a worrying theory about what they're going to do about it. Historically, consoles are sold at a loss and companies make their money primarily from game sales, which is a huge reason why consistent release schedules and exclusives are so important. The PS5, despite being comparable in quality to a trail of spit on a wall, has already sold over 50 million units. Streamers, celebrities, TikTok personalities, they all flex PS5's in the same vein (pun intended) as they do their Lamborghinis and their Balenciaga. Sony has proven that they care more about profits than gamers. I hate to use this term, but the "normies" with too much money who will buy anything remotely trendy are the new target audience. Effectively, Sony can release a new console, raise the price above what it's actually worth, and do absolutely nothing to support its library, which will obviously give them an excuse to shut down even more studios. Then, a few short years down the line, they can release another worthless piece of hardware that appeals to nobody but everyone apparently _needs_ to have... and then bam. Sony becomes the new Apple. Supported by a sea of consumers who only understand "buy" and "spend."
Sony used to have so much variety in their franchises that for some time, I actually prefered their IPs over Nintendo's. But ever since the PS4, the publisher has released only a dozen or so major games with very similar gameplay and systems with little deviation. That approach has completely bit them in the ass with the PS5 with how ridiculously long development cycles have gotten. Sony absolutely needs to scale back the production of their games considerably. Their current direction and business model is not sustainable and will only hurt them in the long run in terms of financial success and consumer morale. They need to bring back long dormant IPs, invest in smaller and more unique games, and ditch the homogenous cinematic style they've adopted since The Last of Us.
That last paragraph sums up my feelings exactly. I'd kill for another Jumping Flash! game that's short but immensely fun and replayable. I've beaten the sequel numerous times because of how gosh darn good it is.
PS5 was the worst purchase I have made and everytime I booted it up I felt like I got ripped off. Never had this feeling once in all my 20 years of playing games and I got a fucking wii u on launch day, 3ds on launch.

Different times as well. Metoo and cancel culture has changed society and how entertainment is made. That's the reason the OG God of war games aren't even on new systems. ps4 is overrated just like ps5 is overrated both consoles has the same issues
Support indie games

I've played many of the games on the Gamepad. It's nice to play Switch and streamed Xbox games off-TV in the bed. If Sony games would still cater to me I would consider a Portal
I agree on Sony being out of touch with popular demand.

I’m gaming since ‘92.
My take on it corporations are worth each other all have their fair share of sh!itty behavior.
This gen I’m disappointed in both Sony and MS.
Also the puritan censorship on the PS5.
True. Why would anyone buy their weeb games for ps5, when you can get them uncensored for switch or pc?
That is one of the most annoying things that they did after moving to the US headquarters. I9t killed many of those funny or silly Japanese game that added variety.

Compared the PS5 to the PS2. That console had an endless slew of insanely good games.
A very unique ones too!
most of the layoffs in the gaming industry right now are not because the companies are struggling but rather because the people up top can't comprehend why the insane growth during covid is not persisting. Most gaming companies are still very much very profitable.
The PS5 is currently still the best selling console (outselling the switch on a weekly basis) despite no games, so from a management perspective it does really seem that people will buy the "upgrade" anyways hence the PS5 Pro
Finally a voice of reason. PS5 also outselling the PS4.
Most companies think we still have all that disposable income that we had during the pandemic
they liked that money they want it forever greedy psychos
@@SIPEROTH Then might as well get a PC? without exclusive games, consoles don't provide enough value except the switch
God of war Ragnarök, Spiderman 2, Atro Bot, Returnal, Ratched and Clank, Horizon Forbidden West, Spiderman Miles Morales, Gt7. Are you kidding me?🤡
@@erenjager6715 You do realize everything on that list except Spiderman 2 is also on PS4 and PC right? And the 2 games exclusive to it aren’t enough to justify a purchase
Anytime they censor sexualized women or do some feminist mumbo jumbo, you can count on the game being trash. The accuracy of this prediction is 99.99%
@@RiasatSalminSami Well you're half correct. Stellar Blade was censored and is a fantastic hack 'n slash. But the ones with ugly women are the run-of-the-mill AAA schlop.

People complain about console exclusivity, THEN complain about games being exclusive to one platform.
People are brain dead.
Yeah I’ve been wondering if people would complain about PS5 if more games were gatekept from PC…
@Coolbens-ph7sjshould i be grateful that sony release a $700+ console then?
- Charges you a $10 upgrade fee for some PS5 versions of PS4 games you already own
- Raises prices to $80 on *BASIC ONLINE!*
- Increasingly releases games on PC, despite fans mocking MS for doing that years earlier
- Retools PS Now & PSN to more closely compete with Game Pass, despite fans insulting GP users as "broke" and mocking them for not buying all their games
- Remakes & "Remasters" of recent games, including ones with remasters already & the most recent entries in a series!
I say all this as a Nintendo fan/PC-only guy, having zero Xbox consoles.
/rant - Thank you for coming to today's Ted Talk 😅
I feel like PlayStation has solidified brand loyalty this gen, a lot of people I know with PS5s got them because it's the "new one" like many people do with phones and not because of any games or features
Xbox owner here. I think Microsoft continues to F up left and right. I love gamepass and the indie games but it shouldn't be a substitute. The reason I don't have a PS5 though is because I would be playing the same triple A games anyway because im not into what they are selling rn. Every PS5 exclusive is a 3rd person action game with forced on the nose storytelling that tells you what to think(aside from Ragnarok imo) and I'm just not really into that genre. I've been waiting for playstation to give me any reason to get a PS5 and I'm hoping silent hill 2 remake is it but we will wait and see.
Thank you for finally stating the facts litteraly in your text! I say all of this for years now to all my playstation fanboy friends lol I played 8 years on ps 4 before that more on 360 instead of ps 3 and before that I had ps 2 and og xbox and This Biased stuff against xbox is so out of touch with reality because of incompetent Sony fanboys and thier console war against xbox and almost everyone is in on youtube and Media because it was all a big brainwash xbox is really trying to safe gaming and not playstation. Because they still sit on that xbox one backlash from 2013. What is absolutely outrageous. Of course they turned into the right direction since 2017 and are trying to be better in pretty much everything the series x and the service and gamepass are waaaay better than anything playstation has to offer the next generation will belong to Microsoft mark my words and I actually want to see that because xbox 360 invented how online gaming is now on consoles and playstation copied soooo many things exactly like xbox but no one ever dares to speak on that because Sony fanboys will find you.
Thanks for stating the facts Sony Fanboys deny that and console war is worse than ever before and because everyone is jumping on the ps 5 bandwagon just look in community's reddit Facebook etc.. Evrywhere Sony fanboy zombies I don't have anything against a gamer but I have something against fanboys who are stating thier console is better without facts. Besides sales just because they can't think for themselves. All the things you Listed are 100% true the industry don't Held them accountable and it pisses me off like Media is acting like playstation is so god tier but the state is actually so bad right now its so smelly.
You may want to add Sony's censorship policy in their list of recent goofs.
Im glad I switched to PC. I can play Xbox and PlayStation games without paying to play online.
But Gpu's cost 3 times as much as they used to, for the price difference I can buy a PS5, a TV, several years of PS Plus and don't have to cope with millions of cheaters in every online game.

PS5 is not cutting edge, the marketing only makes you think so. The ultimate 4k gaming is fake, you get an upscaled 4k than a native one with unstable 30 FPS.
It's a gimmick, Sony has ripped you off. So much for "playing with no limit" with such limitations.
@@Wolvandhiek I know exactly what the PS5 is capable of, I don't need playing with no limit. And you also get NOT "playing with no limit" on PC either, because there is always a bottleneck. Whether its the GPU, or the CPU, games on PC are limited too. Instead of trying to convince others with your dumb masterrace bullshit, you should let everyone decide where he wants to play.
Same just wish I could play Bloodborne and Stellar Blade.
Both of these companies are a complete circus. Lack of variety is my biggest problem with this generation and last generation. Variety apparently died in the 7th gen.
This video continues to age well...
Get over yourself.

Pathetic is certainly the way I'd describe them and then they come out talking about how they are ready to move to the ps6. It's been piss poor then the heavily anticipated Spiderman 2 was also rushed and is missing things that were in the first game.
