As well he should have been. It is easily one of the best live performances ever, especially since we know it was him singing given the year. Even in the 80s, you had groups lip singing to a track (Alan Jackson made a point to mock that during an award show). Today, it's autotuned, lip singing, etc.
One of the reasons I absolutely love the classic music (50s-70s for me); back then, you either had talent or didn't. Bobby had it.

Hundreds of singers have sung this song but none have done it better than Bobby Hatfield. The studio version was used in the film 'Ghost' and was great but this live version is stupendous. No auto tune or gimmicks just pure talent. He had a cold, his mother was in the audience watching him perform for the first time and he suffered with stage fright. When he hits the high note at the end his face does not contort like other singers' faces when they hit a really high note. He just bites his lip and smiles as if to say 'I nailed it'.

As a guy who grew up in that time, I KNEW that song was eternal. I am just surprised that in the time which “has gone by” everybody doesn’t know about it.
I know it’s not your fault. And I am so glad you got to enjoy it. Because none of us are here forever, and everybody should hear Bobby Hatfield do this at least once.

  • @richarddaugherty8583

Bobby Hatfield sang tenor/countertenor which is why he could hit those high notes at the end. I think this performance was better than the studio release (used in the movie Ghost). This song is from a 1950's prison movie called Unchained (which was not very good). It's been covered by many (hundreds?) of singers, but Bobby owns it. If you watch it again, notice how relaxed his jaw is. That cresendo/decresendo he did early in the song takes such fantastic breath control! Just 3 minutes of total perfection!

This is (was) Bobby Hatfield. The other “brother” is Bill Medley, who is still with us. They normally sang as a duo, but did occasional solos. To see both watch You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling.

In terms of what people relate to: this was the era of the Vietnam war and many of the people who were sent there knew there was a real chance they might not return. So very relevant. It is also one of the most covered songs of all time. To understand how good this performance really was, you need to see some of the people who are vocal coaches, opera singers, etc describe what is happening. They know how very difficult some of the notes were to produce and how very great Bobbie Hatfield was. As an aside, the Righteous Brothers singing as a duo which they normally did made a song called “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” which became the most played song of the 20th century.

  • @davidmyers5916
    @davidmyers5916 Рік тому +16

The Righteous Brothers were hugely popular in the 1960's. This song was re-recorded by Bobby Hatfield and used in the movie Ghost with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze.

  • @richiecabral3602
    @richiecabral3602 Рік тому +29

So, The Righteous Brothers are not actually real brothers, but were a singing duo of Bobby Hatfield, whom performs this song alone, and Bill Medley. They were popular in the 60s for a while, and then when their song "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" was used in the movie "Top Gun" in the 80s, they became popular again. That's probably their most famous song, and you get to see the two of them perform together, so you should definitely see that one. Then this song was used in the movie "Ghost" in the 90s, which brought them attention again, and this song has definitely been used in other movies and commercials since then. "Soul and Inspiration" is another good song of theirs. They have a handful of good ones that were popular in their time.
Bill Medley also did a duet with Jennifer Warnes for the song "I've Had The Time Of My Life", that was specifically written for the movie "Dirty Dancing" in the 80s, and was a big hit at that time.
Bobby Hatfield died 20 years ago, so the band is not still a thing. Bill Medley is still alive, i believe, so maybe he still performs, but he's in his 80s now, so I kind of doubt it.

IIRC the way they got their name was while performing in the US South in Soul and Blues venues, one night when they finished a song someone in the audience yelled out, "That's righteous, brothers!"

as he did back in 1965 on the 'Andy Williams Show.'
This (Live) television performance was one for the ages.
Many in the music industry called it the best live television performance ever.
The Andy Williams Orchestra and its String Section were to die for.
They along with the incomparable voice of Bobby Hatfield made this version of
"Unchained Melody" composed by Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret (1955) the best of them all.

This song has been used in many, many movies, TV series and commercials. I am sure you have heard parts of it before. Elvis Presly also sang this and had a popular version, but this song is first and foremost Bobby Hatfield's song. He made it famous, and he really owns the song. Curiously it is from a soundtrack written by Alex North... most people don't know that. It was composed for a forgettable movie called "Unchained." Bobby found it, bought it, and made it famous.

This always makes me cry inside, I grew up with this music, and was a music teacher. Twenty years ago in 2003, on my way to work, the car radio was on, they reported that Bobby had died in a hotel room before a performance with Bill, the other Righteous Brother, in Kalamazoo Michigan. I had almost bought tickets to the show, but was too busy to go so didn't. It was only 50 minutes from my house! Imagine having to teach music a bunch of kids who had no idea who these guys were and keep my mouth shut about his death because they could never relate to this great music. When I took them to the Rock and Roll Roll of Fame on a trip they only knew who Elvis and Michael Jackson were.....duh....the dumbing down of American music by the media and the cash register. "What's a Cash register?" they might ask now...oh God....thank goodness for reactors learning about all kinds of music, our only hope.

No "American Idol" b.s. here, friend!😂 This is what music was like pretty much until Mtv came along in early '80's & turned music industry into image over substance, which continues to this day. I'm a Nashville boy, the little known 5 yr training-ground for the GOAT electric guitarist, Jimi Hendrix. & I tell ya, I can find bums under the bridge here & hand them a guitar & they're better than 99% of anything you'll find in rest of Nashville, "Music City, USA"!!! Sad but TRUE! But they're not pretty enough so back under the bridge they go!😂

The Righteous Brothers sang “you’ve lost that loving feeling,” which Tom Cruise sang on the first Top Gun movie. Unchained Melody is a very famous song, one of the most romantic in pop music history. You would also have heard it in the movie Ghost starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore.

And this is just one of the duo, Bobby Hatfield on his own. In *another* performance for the ages, you should listen to him along with Bill Medley on 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling'.

Inna you had me from the start. I really loved your sweet personality and that Italian friendliness and honest emotional openness that I've seen in my Italian friends. Your reaction to my favourite live performance made it extra enjoyable for me. I felt compelled to sub so that I could continue to see your sweet smile light up each time the music/singing reaches your 💜

This was from the Andy Williams variety tv show. You missed the beginning where he interviewed Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley. They told how they got their name and that Bobby would sing thins song by himself. Bill is off stage.

No one, not even Elvis Presley can perform this song like Bobby Hatfield. And when Blacks heard him sing like that, they said "That's righteous, bro!" And the name stuck, for there are two men, a duo, who sing, Bobby Hatfield, a tenor, and the other, Bill Medley, a bass and it was because of Bobby Hatfield's rendition of "Unchained Melody" [1970]which was originated by Alex North in 1955 that became the iconic standard Bobby Hatfield owns this song forever.

Supposedly the two men were appearing in a club while trying out different names for themselves and a patron came up to them after a show and said there singing was righteous.

    The Andy Williams Show-
    Episode #4.5
    Episode aired Oct 25, 1965
Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher counter tenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song.
*In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63.
The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side.
    * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and he left. He said, 'No, I can do it better.' And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song."
    * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof."
Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.
