Moody Blues were an AWESOME group.....and this song is amazing!!!! We had SO MANY great bands back in that era.
This is the best rendition of this song that I've ever heard. It's absolutely beautiful. Justin's voice is incredible even years later. I'm 70 and remember this song when they first came out with it.
The Lead Singer Justin Hayward wrote Nights In White Satin when he was 19 years old. This man is a musical genius and wrote most of the Moody Blues classical hits.

A lot of members of Generation Z are going to discover the song. They are going to wonder how most of the music today is unlike the music of their parents and grandparents. The music of the Moody Blues is eternal long after most of today's bands are forgotten.

"So dreamy" ? It's one of the sadest most gut wrenching songs ever written, damn it all to hell. Every time I hear it I cry and think where is she what is she doing. Listen to the lyrics. "Nights in White Satin never reaching the end" reference to the sheets she bought him as a gift just before she dumped him. "Letters I have written never meaning to send " With 20 versions in the trash he never mails the letter to try and win her back. Why? "Just what the truth is I can't say anymore" "Gazing at others some hand in hand" Seeing others in love just brings back the pain. "Just what I'm going through you can't understand ".
She’s been married to him for 54 years so it’s not that sad.
This was first done 57 years ago, maybe your grandparents listen to it . some versions have a poem inserted in the performance that is read by the keyboardist, the drummer wrote the poem

The lead singer, Justin Hayward, wrote this when he was only 19. He is now 76 and still touring! I was blessed to have seen him live in 2022. That man can still sing! ❤❤

Incredible to think this song is now 56 years old! Wonder how much of the current crap will be around that long? Actually you don't have to wonder because it's blindingly obvious that the answer is none.
When I was younger I listened to a radio station that would play this every night at midnight, so I used to go to sleep to it every night.
this is the closing track from the moody blues concept album Days of Future Passed which about a day in one man's life the lyrics for the song was inspired by Justin Hayward the singer receiving a set of white satin bed sheets from a girlfriend. the song closes with a spoken poem.

The lead singer wrote this song at 19. Just after his girlfriend broke up with him. As a parting gift she gave him a set of white satin sheets. His voice was great then. But by the time of this live concert His voice has become even richer.

Always love the reaction of young people hearing a perfectly written song and having an orchestra for them to enjoy. This is when music was music.
As a kid, through this day it has always been one of my all time favorite songs.

This was one of their biggest songs here in the states. I think Justin wrote this in his late teens (19), It is a beautiful and heart felt love song! Yes my dear it is pretty!!!!!! Prepare yourself for the ending! With the full orchestra it is spectacular!!!! This music can make you cry!!! Did you love it????? A masterpiece from a Rock & Roll of Fame group. Take care!!!!
Beautiful girl... This was a song I grew up on 1967.......I was lucky to see them in concert.
I was a little worried when I saw you were doing a live version probably done 40 years after original, but that was really pretty damn good. The recorded version is just as beautiful.

Yeah, it's never the ideal way to introduce someone to a new song. Usually, live versions lack the intricate arrangements and balanced mix of the studio versions. Add to that, most vocalists singing power diminishes as they age. So, definitely not the best version. But, as aged live sets go, this wasn't bad.
The song is absolutely beautiful, but it is way more meaningful with the poem at the end. Such a treat when a radio station would play the whole track.
@@DrewHomeworld The poem at the end was recorded separately. It is called Late Lament and was written by their drummer, Graeme Edge. The poem was read by keyboard player Mike Pinder. I once lay in bed thinking of new verses to that poem but never wrote them down 😅
What blows me away is how *great* the singing by Hayward (and Lodge) was. Every bit as good as the original.

Graduated High School in '67. After my time in the service, I started college. I used to listen to this while having Pizza and Beer, with my best friend in the early '70s
In Seattle, Washington, Eagles Auditorium 1967 or 68. Their first album was mind-blowing. We cheered and screamed our approval. Singer told us no one had ever cheered or wanted more from them before. So he said they would do the show over. Because they had no other music.
Boy, this is an oldie.
First heard it on the radio 56 years ago.
Still stands the test of time.

I don't know that I can add anything meaningful to this conversation, but I just had to chime in to say that this has been one of my absolute favorite songs since the day it came out. Also, I have a bit of a musical background, so I appreciate the talent and concentration necessary to recreate a studio masterpiece in a live performance -- especially so many years later, when age can take a toll on one's voice. In listening to this, I couldn't help but relive the emotions I felt when hearing this song so many years ago. What a great performance!
I've been to 100 concerts. I've never heard a band that sounds more like their album, live, than these guys. The lighters were out the entire concert early 70's in Atlanta. People were absolutely blown away!
I've been in love with this band since the very early 70's while in the ARMY. I've seen them 4 times with 2 of them with the full Orchestra. I to have seen nearly a 100 concerts also but consider the Moody Blues concert in 2001 with just the band at a small venue winery in Los Gatos Ca. to be my favorite of them all. Maybe 2000 people singing every word to every song. An 80 year old man to my left and the young teenager on my wife's right. We ALL sang ! Their music crosses generations. Even the Ushers were dancing in the isles. Pure Magic that night. I still have the jersey (not a tee shirt) from that night. Of course it doesn't fit any more. It must have shrunk in the wash............yah right !
Hi there Inna. You should expect great, well crafted, and thoughtful music!!!! The Moody Blues music goes perfect with a full orchestra. Back in the day, it was usually up to Mike Pinder and his Melltron to produce many of these sounds. BUT with an orchestra the musical spectrum is covered...... Jason wrote this beautiful LOVE song in his late teens (19). Can you imagine????? Inna I saw this band back in the 1980's, it was like listening to a studio recording... It was perfect!!!! These men still have it!! Honey they have been around over one/half of a century!!! Please explore their catalog more!!!! Thanks.....

In 1965 The Moody Blues were one of the favourite bands of The Beatles and they used to hang out in London (at The Scotch of St James club). When Paul McCartney was putting Wings together after The Beatles split up, he asked Denny Laine (who passed recently) who had been in The Moodies originally to help him get his new band going. They went on to write several songs together... Love your wonderful reactions Inna!

Important to understand that the orchestral component was not a modern-day addition to this classic song; the Moody Blues incorporated full orchestras in their original works, quite revolutionary in the ‘60’s and early ‘70’s, including this song, where the orchestra added depth, tone, and impact to their music and also helped connect one song to the next in their albums…
Indeed, I would posit they were the first rock group to fully incorporate orchestra music into their sound. I have always said that rock and orchestra, chorale as well, are genres of music that are a match made in heaven. Two great examples: 2006 Danish orchestra and choir backing up Whiter Shade of Pale and Heart's tribute to Led Zepp with full orchestra and choir. OF another world. It was actually an eight piece with a made up name "The London Festival Orchestra".

I have something for you to ponder. Justin, the man singing wrote this when he was 19 years old. It is such a heart-felt song! When I saw them in concert there was no orchestra. But it was one of the best shows I ever went to. The Moody Blues are a band that began in 1964 in Birmingham, England.
❤ Glad you have discovered these guys. This song came out in 1967-68. At that time, popular music was limited to under 2 min 30 sec on AM radio. If it was longer than that it was edited to fit the airtime. FM radio was a new medium. FM stations in an attempt to get listeners would play the album cuts with the intro and post song attachments. Bands loved that people wanted to hear these album tracks in their entirety. would cover the entire length.
Oops, I got excited and hit send, sorry. People started doing the FM thing. Bands and fans got more of what they wanted. Album sales went up, and all the people who make money got a bigger piece of the pie. The Moody Blues were just one of the new more chilled mellow sounding rock bands out there. But everyone got into the longer length songs and even AM radio started playing longer cuts. Okay, maybe now I'm done.
Back then in the Seattle area, we listened to FM radio at night they played Hard Rock & Roll music
The studio version completes with a beautiful poem; worth your time Inna. I have seen the Moody Blues in concert 3 or 4 times over the years, and they always have a local orchestra accompany them in song. They are a deep rabbit hole with many great songs!
I'd go a step further... The studio version , with Justin Hayward's voice at full range and power and the haunting poem at the end... Well you have to listen to that.
In 1967 I took my first big date to see The Moody Blues at The Fillmore East, Greenwich Village, Manhattan, NYC. Just the five guys in the band and their revolutionary Mellotron keyboard which used audio tape for every keystroke emulating an orchestra. It was a beautiful night. I was 16, she was 17 and walking across Saint Marks Place, the scene was electric. The journey on the B line subway back to Brooklyn was dreamlike, and wonderful.

This was the soundtrack of a beautiful romantic love. The girl he wrote the song about married him and they have been married ever since.
It was also used in the movie "Casino" from 1995 with Robert de Niro (Blockbuster) and other movies and series.

That was one of our slow dance when I was young and I must say, this is the first time that I prefer the version of 50 years later than the one of 70' maybe because ther is no more that psychedelic side of the group 😊
The Moody Blues music blends hand in glove with orchestra arrangements. Young lady I have been listening to this band longer than you have lived. This my dear this is the Moody Blues. An U.K. band formed in 1964. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. My favorite album was/is Seventh Sojourn. All good songs and a few great ones on this album/CD. Just wait until the final section it will melt your heart & brain!! From the sparkle in your eyes and the smile on your face I think you loved it!!!!................ "Late Lament" That is how we heard it on the radio for years after it came out. They stared the concert with the poem but didn't do the song until the end.or close to it. So... on your own look for ...Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin/Late Lament ...and hear it all put together. And while we are at it there is another song that you should hear with another by them ....Procession & The Story in Your Eyes - The Moody Blues

True innovators of rock / popular music back in the late '60s / early 70s. There were at least three distinct waves for the popularity of this song on the radio, separated by years. It's an enduring classic. Flute and strings were relatively common in use with rock music back then, with the Moody Blues being one of the bands that helped popularize the more orchestral style.
Another band with innovative use of orchestral instruments is the Electric Light Orchestra, better known simply as ELO. They had a lot of hits in the late 70s / early 80s.

They created many of the most beautiful rock songs ever written.
Many of their songs are orchestrated and used a fascinating instrument called the mellotron.
I saw them at The University of Illinois in Champaign, IL in March 1972 with some buddies and the concert changed our lives.

In 1977 composer and music producer Jeff Wayne used Forever Autumn as one of the songs in his musical adaptation of H.G. Wells 'War of the Worlds'. I had this musical as a child on a 33 vinyl (great music by the way if you look it up) years later in in the mid 2000's I had the absolute pleasure to see this childhood memory brought to life with none other than Justin singing that very same song. A memory I will never forget.
@@AndrewinAus- I still have the "War Of The Worlds" LP. Very cool that you saw him sing it live. Gary Barlow of Take That and The X Factor, did a rendition of Forever Autumn that is decent, but nowhere close to Justin Hayward.

One of the all time classics and one that will never get old or boring. I have it on my list to suggest to you for a reaction (or did I suggest it already?). My father bought the vinyl version way back and we played it until it was worn down. I would love to sing this at karaoke night.
