Bobby Hatfield died at age 63, 20 years ago. I grew up with this music. I was a school music teacher. He and Bill, the other RIghteous Brother, were on tour. Bobby died in a hotel room in Kalamazoo Michigan where they were going to perform, but he died before they were to go onstage. I ha d almost bought tickets to the show, 50 minutes away from my house. But I was too busy. On the way to teach school the next morning I heard the news on the radio and I cried... it just hit me hard....knowing the students at school would have no idea who this man was. What a loss....
Bobby is NOT singing falsetto at any point in this song. He is simply singing high, because he had such an amazing range. Also, as others have mentioned: 1965. Live performance. No autotune, no sophisticated audio filters, no retakes or overdubbing. Just pure, raw, disciplined talent. I wish we had music and singers like this today.
@@sabina1118- Bobby was an extremely talented Countertenor…this is definitely the best version of the song. Most people have only heard the record/radio version used in the movie “Ghost” - which is a pity…because this is vastly superior.

“Masterful” is a great one word summary. Even better is “perfect.” Bobby was actually nervous before his performance because his mother, who’d never heard him sing on stage before, was sitting in the seats behind him. I’ve also heard he was sick but who knows? Legendary performances have their mythology.

This was on the Andy Williams Show 1965 , live no autotune pure talent and to think that Bobby was sick at the time and singing with a fever. I was 13 years old when it came on TV in the Netherlands in 1966 and I immediately fell in love with this song and still do.💖
Only once in a life time does the right singer and the right song come together and done live to become so beautiful and the performance was just perfect.
Love this was done live on the Andy Williams show in Oct. 1965 with the backing of Andy's orchestra, no autotune or electronics other than a mic to aid his voice. Done for the first time in front of his mother, while Bobby was sick & he was having terrible stage fright. While I went to the show to see the Osmonds (who didn't appear) I fell in love with Bobby's voice with this song, felt like he was singing just to me. Greatest live performance I have ever seen! People comment on why there is no audience noise during this performance. Part of that is because the studio didn't want noise during the performance & part I believe was because his voice had people enthralled.
It was a different time referencing the "no audience noise". People respected the performance, the performer, and didn't act out, talk, etc. Yeah, today? No. But back in that time? Oh yeah. Watch all the videos from the 50s, 60s, in a club, stage setting and the audience is just sitting back, silent, watching, enjoying.
OMG, the late Bobby Hatfield. I was 15 yrs old when I watched him sing this beautiful song on the Andy Williams show in 1965. No auto tunes, just pure raw talent! RIP BOBBY! We miss hearing your beautiful voice. You had so many solo songs such as Summertime and duals with your amazing Brother!
You are the best reacter yet. I love that you go back and insert comments with CC. Too many stop and start, stop and start, ruining the mood of the song. And your comments afterwards were spot on. This song has been covered dozens upon dozens of times. Bobby Hatfield's performance here is the quintessential rendition. It originally appeared in a 1955 movie, Unchained. It's sung by a prisoner who is pining over ("lonely rivers...") whether his wife will wait for him to complete his sentence ("time goes by so slowly" and "wait for me, wait for me"). Thanks for one of the best reaction videos I have seen (there are dozens) for this sone. Oh, almost forgot. You maybe did not hear this in a commercial but in the movie Ghost (1990). But it has been covered dozens of times, too.
I love your reaction to this great song and artist. Your facial expressions says it all. We grew up on this music and it still is a blessing this many years later.
You are one of the rare reaction channels that gave props to the beautiful and mesmerizing arrangement of this Alex North composed song with Lyrics by Hy Zaret (1955). The NBC Studio Orchestra from the "Andy Williams Show" (1965). Arranged what I considered the best version of this song ever! The Violins and Strings Sections along with Horns gave this song an even bigger feel to it. And add to it one of the greatest Counter Tenor voices in Rock & Roll history, in Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. And you get an Instant Classic. This (Live) performance has been considered as one of the greatest performances in television history. Great response to one of the greatest live performances ever!
thanks to you & Sabina for mentioning the arrangement which almost no one does. those strings really take the song up to another level. and IMHO this is one of the top live solo vocal performances of all time.
Yes, you are right. The string section on this arrangement was so beautifully done. The NBC Studio Orchestra performed what I considered the greatest rendition of this song I have ever heard. Since this performance done 58 years ago back in 1965. This version of "Unchained Melody" has become the quintessential version of them all. Add to that the Counter Tenor voice of Bobby Hatfield. And you get one of the greatest live performances by and orchestra and a singer ever. Thanks for replying to my comments.

Great reaction. Would love to see your take on their song “you’ve lost that loving feeling” it’s supposedly the most listened to song in modern history.
Bobby was a soulful singing counter tenor. He was able to hit those high notes naturally with ease. October 25 1965 on the Andy Williams Show. Beautiful!

Wonderful reaction, as always! The way I heard it (or read it?), Bobby's mother was in that audience and he was nervous about that last note. So, yes, looks casual and comfortable and easy, but inside, some butterflies. But he nailed it.
He always was nervous about performing in general, not about hitting any note. He would perform on an empty stomach to avoid vomiting before going on stage. If he thought he wouldn't be able to do that ending (which he did with perfect opera technique), for whatever reason, including the fact he actually had a cold at that time, he would have skipped it rather than embarrass himself live on national television. He said that right before he started to sing he thought he was going to faint. He was extra nervous here because his mama was there (she's sitting behind him). He said he was aware of her being there the entire time. That it was like when he would practice at home. Okay, I'll stop rambling now.
Thank you for letting us read your reactions instead of interrupting the song. I have seen dozens of reactions to this performance and yours is the best. If I remember correctly, there's a longer version of this that includes a conversation between Andy Williams (the host of the show) and Bill Medley (the other Righteous Brother). I believe they discuss how Bobby Hatfield got this solo, as well as the fact that his mother was in the audience for this performance.
I used to go to the roller skating rink when I was about 12 years old and this was often played as one of the ‘couples only’ skate songs. It was a very big hit, as were many of their songs.
Song originally composed for a movie in the '50's concerning a prisoner, which makes the lyrics more meaningful. It was then used beautifully in the movie "Ghost" which revived it and put it on the charts once again. It is timeless. And this is the quintessential version, done LIVE. Thank you Bobby.
@@joanneperkins9600 Bobby's daughter is not a singer. Bill's daughter is but does not sing this one. Bill sings a blues version of it in his shows with a slideshow of Bobby as a tribute to him
Once again, this excellent music reaction channel is exploring music from all time periods and generes. This beautiful song was given a new lease of life thanks to the film Ghost, which would have introduced it to people who may not have been aware of it. The 1960’s was a quality era for music, this fine song being one such example. Quality musical arrangement and vocals and no obvious sign of any gizmos to enhance the vocals..such was the quality of this musical partnership. Lovely reaction Sabina.
The version used in " Ghost " was the studio version and not as flamboyant as the live version on the Andy Williams Show. Andy Williams can sing a little bit too.
Thanks for your comment. It was so nice to hear you talking and you didn't interrupt. To me it was great that you was spoken very clearly so i could understand almost every word. Regards from germany
Mmmm. So glad I was living in that time and heard this on the radio quite often. The duo was extremely popular and adored. Seeing this again was a real treat. So many good singers back then and such good music. It was beyond awesome. Was surprised and pleased that your reaction was printed as you went and there were no interruptions to the performance. Thank you for that.
Wow, what a great reaction to what has to be the most perfect, best live performance of such a beautiful romantic song by any singer at any time 🥰! Easily the best Unchained Melody, despite it being covered constantly. It was played in the movie Ghost in a dramatic scene, and it was Bobby singing it. Your reaction was as perfect as Bobbie's performance, and I had not heard this song either, until I heard a reaction to it on UA-cam. You hit the point that Bobby was so very relaxed, with no strain in his face or his vocals or his neck the entire time, even when he went so high at the end! Thank you so much for sharing this with us all - it was so fun to watch and listen to! 🥰🤗
The song originated from the movie Unchained, about a prisoner who was longing to return to his wife and son. No one does it better than Bobby Hatfield. Not only his voice but the emotion of the song is captured perfectly.
I really like and appreciate your review that does not talk over the music and singing. The post video edit comments work so well. You may remember a movie GHOST that highlighted the melody.
Check out both "brothers" in You'll Never Walk Alone. Bill Medley (the other 'brother') is a superb baritone whose voice mates magically with Bobby's tenor/contra tenor voice.
Thanks, Sabina - Bobby was amazing.. no straining, no screaming... perfect breath control... no "autotune" (obviously)- LIVE and he was nervous b/c his MOM was in the audience (not confirmed, but someone else commented that he also had a cold-lol) -- appreciate this reaction!
love that I get to hear and enjoy the song and read your reaction during it . A lot of reactors destroy the continuity by shredding it with way too many interruptions. well done 👏 ps. really like your new hair❤
There have been a number of singers who have performed it including: Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Hibbler, and please forgive me two others in the 50s which I cannot remember. However, I think if all of them were in the audience that night when Hatfield performed it, they would have all stood up and applauded his performance.
I never get tired of watching/Listening to this video. BtW, this is the late great Bobby Hatfield, one of the two guys who were the "Righteous Brothers." The other is Bill Medley, the baritone voice who is still with us. The two together were famous for their song "You've Lost That Loving Feeling."
I loved how your head was up during parts of the song, like you were so open, excited and expectant about how the song would unfold. Lovely reaction, Sabina. Such an "angelic" song. Of the gods, literally. Thank you. : )
Bobby solos òn He, My prayeŕ,añd makes Bill smile on Bring it on home; on Youve lost that loving feeling, bobby takes a few secondsat theceñd of the soñg to make it great. He is remarķable at that - añd everything else.
One of the most, if not THE MOST amazing performances I've ever experienced. This man can sing! ... and he does it so easily... truly stunning! Sabina, he never used falsetto. I found out from 3 opera singers, that he is what is known as a countertenor... a guy that can sing much higher than tenors. I didn't know either! Loved the fact that you didn't interrupt the song...we appreciated the graphic comments!
You speak of him Bobby Hatfield being so relaxed. In truth, nothing could be farther from the truth. Not only was he sick and running a fever, but his mother -- who had never heard him perform -- was in the audience and Hatfield said later tht he was a nervous wreck. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the mark of a true professional.
I love this song. I love this performance. I know that at the time he had a really bad head cold but I think it made this performance even better. He had such an incredible range. I love how he ended it on such a high range. I would have loved that ending on the original. Absolutely stunning.
I understand what you're saying. I have watched the reaction of multiple people who only have heard this song for the first time. The one word we used to use for a reaction such as yours was " blown away " . Meaning it was very hard to express your feelings, you could not find enough words to describe how you felt by the end of a song. Bobby Hatfield's solo was a live performance . It has never been matched or equaled. Welcome to the music of my generation.
Thank you for your audio core high fidelity level 10 responses that appreciates seeing and hearing the greatest voice gymnast who performs at a 10 every time. I hear Bobby's beauty every time i listen and saw your beautiful reaction.
Thank you enjoy your response to your pleasure as you listened to Bobby's vocal interpretative skills and agility. Elegant connoisseur in your perceptions audio and visual. Bobby was epic in his range and talents one of his performances in a solo he maxes his range in "Summertime" i would like to entreat you to listen and respond. The righteous Brothers were identified as blue eye soul Bobby was a passionate singer of love between a man and a woman in most all of his songs especially in ethereally and figuratively in "Ebb Tide" solo and in a duo of inspiration in "You"ll Never Walk Alone". My wish and prayer Peace and agapeo.
This was natural to him. He simply rose to the industry standard of the time. Perfect song and lyrics converged into a serendipitous coincidence at the right time in history.
One of the best live performances ever recorded. The ending though, is not falsetto. Thats his head voice, and no one but a countertenor can reach that. I saw somewhere that his band mate, Bill told him not to try that live because if he messed it up even a little it would ruin everything. Bobby was like, nope I'm doing it. That night he had a head cold and both his mother and father were in the audience listening to him sing live on stage for the first time. Massive stakes and he knocked it out of the park with ease.
I think you got it just right. Thanks for the no pause routine during the performance. And nice touch with the after-thoughts overlay. Liked and subscribed.

The 1955 film was titled "Unchained" which explains the song and its title.
If you've watched the movie Ghost, you've heard this before. Amazing tune.
I have not! Indeed amazing!!
@@sabina1118 the high notes at the very end are not on the studio version or the movie version.
I saw the Righteous Brothers in person many years later and his daughter was singing that song. I still have the the old album.
@@joanneperkins9600 Bobby's daughter is not a singer. Bill's daughter is but does not sing this one. Bill sings a blues version of it in his shows with a slideshow of Bobby as a tribute to him
@@zanhar7688 I wonder who the woman was that sang then.
Oh please please do "You've Lost That Loving Feeling." Blue eyed soul at it's best.
Blue-Eyed Soul. Great times.. He caused the birth rate to double that year.
You have to listen to their (both of em) "You've lost That Loving Feeling now"
Once again, this excellent music reaction channel is exploring music from all time periods and generes.
It was so nice to hear you talking and you
didn't interrupt. To me it was great that you was spoken very clearly so i could understand almost every word. Regards from germany
It's so good it is even hard to point out at what time all the seats in the stadium get wet.
From my era always loved this made me feel wonderful crazy then and wonderful crazy now makes me want to slow dance and enjoy the emotions.
One of the most classic songs ever.....
My great pleasure ❤️😃 Thanks!!
This is always been one of my favorites. All their music was great.this one really touches the heart and soul
Sabina, Your expression made my heart happy.
The song originated from the movie Unchained, about a prisoner who was longing to return to his wife and son. No one does it better than Bobby Hatfield. Not only his voice but the emotion of the song is captured perfectly.
I spent time with Bobby in our younger days. He busted one of my ears with his voice.
Love your reactions...AJ does a great version of this classic song...miss you reacting to Angelina...
I wish a guy like this could show up at every woman's doorstep and sing them this song just for them.
Great reaction. Thank you.
bobby is a counter tenor, that's his natural voice when singing high notes not forced like a falsetto
Still enjoying your reactions.... oh! my heart!
Wow thanks for doing this song, great reaction, we had this song on our wedding day ❤️
Cool, Oldies but Goodies! Love you gorgeous! ❤
Love you back!
My wife saw him sing this in 1969 at her grad night party at Disneyland. Says it was even better in person
Goosebumps from this song.
I love this song. I love this performance. I know that at the time he had a really bad head cold but I think it made this performance even better. He had such an incredible range. I love how he ended it on such a high range. I would have loved that ending on the original. Absolutely stunning.
Lovely reaction, beautiful song, really enjoyed this reaction you did, love these old songs. Thank you.
Great comment bruceford.
@@thinking6307 Thank You
Thank you for your audio core high fidelity level 10 responses that appreciates seeing and hearing the greatest voice gymnast who performs at a 10 every time.
I'm really warming up to your reactions. The expressive aspects of your countenance sparks so much to your reactions.
Thanks!! 🙏🏻❤️
This was my parents song. They would’ve been 94 now. Always chokes me up. Thanks.
@USERNAME_OfficialSabina_ @petecogan1 Ok. Let’s talk
I love the way your comments don't interrupt the singing, new subscriber here, thanks
This was natural to him. He simply rose to the industry standard of the time. Perfect song and lyrics converged into a serendipitous coincidence at the right time in history.
I’ve been watching dozens of reaction videos of this song. Yours was one of the best!
He just stands there and a performance like this. Wow. That's talent.
Bill never said any such thing. Where does the stuff come from?
mom and dad heard him for the first time -- this performance!? Wowza!
@@anascoburn The first professional performance.
Bobby is a counter Tenor thats why he can sing so high. Counter Tenors are very rare. His voice is a true gift from God.
I think you got it just right. Thanks for the no pause routine during the performance. And nice touch with the after-thoughts overlay. Liked and subscribed.
