    I can't believe I didn't notice that bit of foreshadowing hidden in Derek's stuffed animals on my first viewing. It's quick but not really hidden out of frame or anything. Totally creeped me out when I rewatched it for the review.

      You can also see one of those elf things in the background of a part 1 episode. It's behind Elfo when he walks down the stairs in episode 4

    First episode of this Season 1 was fantastic imo. Unfortunately it's desire to back peddle to episodic comedy rather than keeping up a genuinely dramatic serial was disappointing to me.

      right? I was disappointed once I started noticing each episode was its own separate story. At first I thought that maybe Groening & co. don't have a flair for the dramatic. I forgot that some of the most heart warming moments in television history came out of Futurama.

    I definitely feel like this season left us hanging I really felt like it just touched the surface and like you said I want more bring on season three. I did like a lot of the character development amongst the side characters especially Oona. Elfo’s story line this season reminds me a lot of Buffy’s story in season six of BtVS. I really hope he gets more emotional depth in season 3

    Hey great video, I have some things you might of over looked, the tunnels underneath the castle is where Dagmar and the albino elves saved her, elfo and Lucy.
    Jerry was introduced in part one and we as the audience learned much about his and his siblings until Dagmar and bean come back to Maru, and we find out his is related to her and therefore bean (also we find out he got the crown used on him at the age of ten permanently making him that intellect.) All this made his sacrifice for bean all that more important and why he got to go to heaven and why god was so mad at elfo for scolding him.
    Elfos mom is the ogre queen (the benefit of pops being on the road I believe he called them fringe benefits). That's why she was so shocked at his name as bean and him left, why elfo is green, why he has a blood rage. That also makes the ogre he stabbed in the eye his half brother!
    Edit: I missed that you talked about elfos mom potentially being half ogre. I noticed my mistake on another viewing of the video, sorry about that. very much enjoyed the video.

    They really do need to get things moving along in terms of what the hell is going on for the next part. There’s nothing wrong with a mystery, but not knowing what Dagmars deal is besides trying to “fulfill a prophecy” despite Bean literally staying with her for 2 episodes feels just as cheap as the writers still trying to make a mystery of Elfo’s origins despite them being able to ask his dad anytime they’d like. Why give them the screen time if they’re bending over backwards to not give the audience an answer?

    I feel like this was an improvement over the first set of episodes, and I'm someone who enjoyed them. As much as I am liking the show, and as much as I want it to succeed I still cannot deny it does have a few flaws here and there. It's still a very cool show that has very endearing fantasy/adventures elements, and I'm always engaged with that. In terms of the humor I admit it can be hit and miss at times, but I feel that they're starting to find their stride now, and the humor aspect is improving. It's also quite impressive how for being a Matt Groening series the show really hasn't had any guest stars yet. In terms of guest stars they've mostly just had other Matt Groening alumni like Lauren Tom and Phil LaMarr. It was awesome to here Phil LaMarr in these episodes, and having him voice both God and the Devil was freaking awesome. I hope other Matt Groening alumni like Dan Castellaneta, Nancy Cartwright, Frank Welker, and Hank Azaria appear in the show. I also feel the secondary characters are getting more development, and I cannot wait to see what they go through in the next season. I hope the show continues to get better, and I hope it becomes a major hit for Netflix.

    Oh wait. Maybe I'm a dumb-dumb. But I swear - at first I thought it was a faux-betrayal, but after awhile I actually _was_ convinced by Luci's 'betrayal'. And I was sincerely, truly enthralled and surprised by that episode. Like, I felt genuine relief when he swooped in and saved Beanie and Elfo. Because the series has done some pretty surprising deaths & such I did think oh shit they went there?! Haha. Like I said, I'm probably just a dumbdumb.

    I agree with you here, my main dislike about this season is the pacing of individual episodes, they felt too quick, I could barely latch onto anything. and the second thing was the treatment of the mysteries of part 1. the turning everyone to stone thing was super important and it appears to be solved too quickly (or is that just me?). but yeah overall I like the show, and want part 3.

  • @britann9539
    @britann9539 4 роки тому +1

    Okay im watching the intro advertisement, haven't seen your take yet . . .
    But I'm really hoping you talk about how much better season 2 is 😁
    I FRIGGN LOVED IT. I didn't hate season one, at ALL. But i knew it was just going to get better & better... i was right. I understood why lots of people didnt like it because i think i liked it more than most, for the potential i see.
    A lot.
    But sometimes i tend to give too much slack to animation aha. So idk. But also, im not watching this show for laughs. The show is an incredibly intriguing plot with fascinating characters that I absolutely love. Luci is one if the best new characters in adult/teen animations. The world building is my favourite thing abut most animated series, though, so thats likely why im so fond of it - it is soooooooo imaginative & pretty. Like STEAMLAND? I FUCKING LOVE STEAMLAND. Anyway, yah its not laugh out loud funny, rarely. Its just amusing and light @ times. Jokes are just sprinkles on top of a fun and intriguing and imaginative sundae 😁.

  • @abandonedaccounnt
    @abandonedaccounnt 4 роки тому +1

    Yeah, the way this show is so cavalier about setting up plot points and forgetting them immediately really breaks the serial immersion in a really bad way. I can't take things seriously if the show doesn't take them seriously. The nice thing about Gravity Falls' setup is that part of the overarching plot _is_ discovering the weird supernatural stuff so even when it's doing wacky episodic shenanigans it feels like some progress is being gained in addition to the bits of scattered lore. Another thing is that Gravity Falls has a strong supporting cast whereas Disenchantment's side characters are barely memorable. Oh, Odval wants to usurp the king? Maybe that would mean something if we knew anything about him outside of his love of orgies. I guess there's something conspiratorial going on with secret societies but there's barely any focus and it's mostly played as a joke. Really feels like they're just going through the motions. Merkimer's pretty cool, I guess. I like Oona too but she's undercooked. I get that trying to mix serialization with episodic stuff is a tall order (Gravity Falls didn't do this perfectly either) but at this point it feels more like episodic stuff but every 3 episodes there's a subplot that's sorta related to something that happened before. Maybe it's unfair to expect writers who aren't used to this to nail it right off the bat but I dunno. I tend to be more frustrated at things with potential that don't commit toward it but I'm still pretty lukewarm here.

    I feel they took two parts in order to world build and devolop characters. World building usually takes an episode or two. They have so much set up, but it's lead to almost nothing. If the writers want a great series they need to take the world they build up and do something with it for part 3.

    • @TheRealJims
      @TheRealJims  4 роки тому +2

      I agree. There is obviously something interesting hidden in the catacombs of Dreamland Castle, but the show isn't in any hurry to explore it. There's something interesting about Elfo's parentage, but the show isn't in a hurry to explore it. I get pacing and all and not blowing through all their secrets... There just isn't a strong enough inciting incident to the series to hook people. They shouldn't be restricting the series by hiding all the stuff that makes their characters and setting unique to the fantasy genre.

    If I’m being honest, the second season felt like we walked in one big cul de sac oh sure stuff happens along the way, but where we end feels like we really only took 3 steps forward, no questions answered but 8 thousand more raised, and somehow I feel like Bean went backwards with how naively dumb she was. Really hoping this show doesn’t pull a JJ Abrams and give us disappointment when answering the questions

      Tadicuslegion78 that’s an excellent analogy. nothing of consequence happened or resluted due to the stone spell of s1. and at the end of s2 we are right back to where we were at the end of s1 with regards to dagmar and bean. sigh. i don’t dislike this, and maybe my expectations were too high because of simpsons and futurama, but i felt this show has been good, not great. .

    I feel like Disenchantment doesn't use it's potential. The characters have moments in which they reflect and all, but in the end, the are all the same characters again. The Elfo and Luci banter jokes feel so repetitive. I watched the 2 seasons and it feels as if nothing has changed from the 1st episode. Ok the lizard queen is gone, Derek feels lonely. I know actually a lot has happened. But I don't see too much character development, which doesn't fit all the things that has happened. They walked through hell and they basically all the same.

    I like that you conpare Bean to a Homer/Lisa composite character. She struck me more of a Fry/Leela/Bender type character. These days Homer's too braindead and pathetic I feel to be a character we have any sympathy for, and Lisa is too self-righeous and whiny. Fry is naive and in over his head, Leela is opinionated and quick to violence, and Bender is greedy and oppotunistic. Bean shows all these qualities.

    Serialized ... this is the keyword.
    Whenever a sitcom gets serialized, you really know it jumped the shark. South Park fell on their face hard, so they became episodical again.
    The Simpsons are like Two and a half Men with Charlie Sheen - a Sitcom.
    Disenchantment is like Two and a half Men with Ashton Kutcher - a Soap Opera (Don't blame Ashton Kutcher - blame the Executive Producer).
    While Soap Operas have some fans, they aren't sitcoms and a connected plot is certainly a bad thing for a sitcom, as it lacks variety. Most controversial Simpsons episodes from the Mike Scully period make permanent changes to the canon like the changes for Apu and Lisa, so change equals bad. While millenials like and hype some soap operas like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones, theese are different from the Simpsons in genre (Drama vs Comedy), medium (Internet vs Television) and demography (Millenials vs Gen X). Making simpsonized Game of Thrones is bound to fail.

    I hate disenchatment so much. The characters are bland, meet Bean generic feamle protagonist she is having trouble getting along with her dad I have never seen that a milion times before. She is just Areil if she was a jerk she is very boring and plain. Meet Elfo an elf that wants to be bad. Even though he flip flops being good and bad at any mommenty and he is a jerk like the rest of them so it doesn't really work. Then you have Luci Bender mixed with Garfield. He is restricted to bean shoulder most of the time so he doesn't really do much. The writting is cliched. The jokes are abysmal they are some of the corniest jokes I have ever heard in my entire life. For some reason they are always insistant on telling for the most obvious jokes possible in any situation. like in that exorcist episode when the priest guy captured Luci in a bottle to drop him in the vocolcano. They save the demons. Bean: We unleashed evil on the world Luci: Isn't it great. *Baddum tisssss* get it he is the demon I didn't see that coming. for every 50 bad jokes there is one chuckle. I have heard Fozy Bear tell better jokes and they are bad on purpous.
