The Adam West scene in Mr. Plow is the single funniest moment in the entire show for me. The dutch angle, the Batusi, Homer's look of genuine horror... It's a work of genius. Every time it cuts to Homer's face I burst out laughing. That single frame might be the funniest thing I've ever seen.
It isn't my favorite joke of the series but yeah having rewatched Mr. Plow again on DVD or even on it's own it is really good and "why doesn't Batman dance anymore?" is just one of those great Adam West quotes. Though oddly enough it may be one of the most dated jokes of Season 4. Considering it's based off the idea that kids only know who Batman is now from the 1989 movie when there's so much more Batman/Bat related media out there. Granted Robin hasn't been the star of a major live action Batman movie since Batman and Robin but in this current time of the Simpsons you'd think Bart or Lisa would be familiar with Lego Batman or Teen Titans Go! and... wow why am I still going for this point?

Of course, he's sadly passed away now so it's clearly from a different time period. I guess any Simpsons joke involving a current celebrity is going to become outdated eventually - even with today's episodes. This moment feels like an exception though because the sheer absurdity of it is hilarious regardless. Also: "Pure. West."

The rest of the rant actually kind of is more timeless sans yeah West's tragic passing. And heh thinking about it this probably the "kind of crazy full of himself Adam West" performance that likely inspired Seth MacFarlane and Butch Hartman's Adam West characters on their most famous shows... again until Mr. West's tragic passing... and Fairly Oddparents cancellation which was tragic in the least bit.

how could it be different some things are properly ranked for a reason...sure you can argue contrarianism but for certain things theres no agenda or backlash when you say last exit to springfield is a top tier episode maybe the top of the whole show no ones arguing with you because it can make a 75 year old laugh a 35 year old laugh a 21 year old a 10 year old a 7 year old all laugh ….its magic....I have been in the room with a 9 year old a 18 year old a 32 year old a 45 year old an a 65 year old and everyones laughing non stop and understood the plot..that takes skill

all that matters is you chose the right episode at 1..its the best episode of the show and honestly one of the best cartoon episodes period of the 90's and in terms of american 90's t.v. sitcom history it is my top choice....the amount of writing in it is just perfectly executed..its why season 4 while goofy works cause its so funny and well crafted that while we may miss season 1-3 for its realistic dry down to earth feel in style season 4 balances the fine line well of whacky and down to earth character studies...homer and burns exchange when homer thinks hes coming on to him is so funny and random I love it....the word play is just so well timed...
lisas first word is underrated thank you for putting it so high like i have it...krustys at his best with his angry: You people are all pigs! (instant cries) lol....krusty is the star of this season for sure it starts and ends focused on him if you notice the air date order..i mean come on
You know it's ironic how 'Krusty Gets Cancelled' feels meta-textual in retrospect. because you've got Krusty's show getting cancelled by channel 6 for being old and stale, whilst Gabbo is a new and exciting show that takes away ground from Krusty's ratings and audience.
When you listed these episodes i suddenly realized how packed and great was this season full of unforgetable stuff....I really love these wacky jokes but it has also deep and sweet tones
season 3 4 and 6 are almost too packed with stuff the great stuff takes away from the still very good stuff in lesser episodes sadly....stuff that would highlight other seasons gets pushed aside for classic iconic moments too many in these three seasons to count...
The Simpsons was at its best when Conan was part of the writing staff. Marge vs the Monorail was one of 4 episodes that he was the head writer on and it definitely shows
Mr. Plow will forever remain my favourite S4 episode, but I might chug that to the spanish dub, this was one of those episodes where you KNEW the VAs were having a lot of fun, the delivery of the jokes is just brilliant. Overall however, I just love season 4 as a whole.
Probably the most memorable joke for me in season 4 is the crazy old guy in Krusty gets Kancelled. "The old grey mare, she ain't what she used to be, ain't what she used to be, ain't what she used to be."
marge gets to be more of a character...shes not just stuck in a box in that one homer is for once.....hes on auto pilot more in the background not being important which marge 50% of the time is.. its a good role reversal...same thing with lisa and bart in I love lisa...barts just in the background and its perfect the amount he shows up and hes written to be funny but nothing really stays with you cause hes just part of the scenery of a few big moments
whats great about last exit and why I have it as my favorite is simple its flawless..the closest negative nitpick I can think of is it clearly came in short when they animated it which is why they extend stretch and bring back the dental plan joke and yet it doesn't feel forced...everything else is perfect...

That Top 3 was stacked. I definitely can't disagree with your #1, though. Definitely one of the best episodes in the series. "Which was the style at the time" is probably my personal most quoted Simpsons joke ever. Also, using Mercenary Boxing for the #1 spot was genius. Keep it up.

Season 4 is easily the best season of the series IMO. It has so many classic lines and episodes in it, and it's freaking hilarious. Plus, I absolutely love the animation style in Mr. Plow and Homer's Triple Bypass. The scene when Homer's heart shatters in Mr. Burns' office is so beautifully and hilariously animated!
Lisa's First Word has always been my favourite episode of all of The Simpsons. It encapsulates exactly what The Simpsons means to me. And the ending :')
Homer the Heretic should be higher. But such a great season overall. I Love Lisa is weird, in that it gave us an only glimpse of what Ralph could be, and then was never picked up again (unless you count his stint in the Party Posse)
the awkwardness when ralph says to lisa while walking her home, so......you like...stuff!...and her trying to be nice and the cut away with him finishing his story is such well timed observational kid humor...
The best Ralph besides this was when Marge forced Bart to be his playmate (“you have no idea what it’s like being paired up with a dufus” cue Homer) and then Bart betrays him for the city key and then gets betrayed by the bullies (I hope the irony isn’t lost on you, Simpson”). Then Ralph is brave.
God last exit to Springfield... I remember that list too, I saw it as well and went 'really?'. But no it really just is that good. The jokes per minute is absolutely insane and they all hit. It even has some really memorable shots, the burns and smithers in the control room with the door hanging, the wide shot of the plant strike, and almost everything in the dentist is etched into my brain as an almost platonic ideal of what Simpsons is to me.

My mates dug out a season four DVD and I said to put that one on. They said something similar to our host "the union episode"? As we were watching it, they just kept saying "wow, this moment is in that episode too!". There are more memorable and quotable moments in that episode than in most shows.
@@mankytoes from what I saw that episode was written by everyone in the room adding jokes to a simple storyline and they went out of control and were most likely all on drugs to stay up all night to come up with these jokes as fast paced as they did since remember this is near the end of the run when half the original writers producers showrunners directors were leaving the show and they changed animation studios from klaspy csupo full time to film roman..season 4 was the end of peak simpsons
I love all of season 4, but I think New Kid on The Block is very underrated, I used to not like it as a kid (because I used to just hate romance as a 7 year old) but re-watching it, it's one of my favorites and I found Laura Powers to be a very interesting character who should have been brought back. It would be cool if you did an Extra Seconds review on New Kid on The Block.
I'm glad that you highly rate episodes such as Lisa's first word and I choose Lisa; as I have gotten older I have found myself more grounded to lisa-centric episodes purely by personal taste - that organic down to earth episode that can be pote totally insightful and emotional whilst still being extremely funny. I briefly studied a streetcar names desire as an adult, so I will have to rewatch that one to see if the incongruence is humorously unsettling too.
My favorites "Itchy and Scratchy Movie", "Mr. Plow", "Brother from the same Planet", "I love Lisa", "The Front", "Wacking day", and "Marge in Chains". This should the little s.o.b.'s
My argument for "So, It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show": The first act is entirely new material and the structure story is fun, solid, and a little emotional at the end. Some of the classic clips that they choose are the best bits of weaker episodes, so it's nice to have them all in one spot. The "D'oh" montage just needs to exist. And they extend the Homer down the gorge scene with so it plays out in its entirety! I'm always disappointed when I watch "Bart the Daredevil" and the full glory of that scene isn't intact. All in all, I feel it was a great little retrospective of the early years of The Simpsons that is great for newcomers, so I always consider it one of my favorites.
@@TheRealJims its good for a clip show but it the bottom of the barrell..not bad but this is season 4 and well even the front the worst episode of the season is much better so...no way its up there...but of all the clip shows its the one to watch for the new animation and the verity of clips being in season 4 helps them because writing a season 3 clip show must of been really hard

Great list dude. My list is pretty close to yours, only I would have had Krusty Gets Kancelled on mine. In terms of the rankings I'm not entirely sure how mine would be without thinking about it first, but Marge vs the Monorail and Last Exit to Springfield are in my top 2 spots as well. I gotta give props for using the theme to Splatterhouse for the Halloween episode run down. It made me keep an ear out for what other musical Easter eggs you had in this countdown and makes me want to go back and watch the top ten videos for the previous seasons to see if I hear any other recognizable tunes
I spent the whole video basically knowing what the top 2 would be, and wondering which order you'd put them in. Glad to see you, in my view, made the right call. I think Last Exit might genuinely be the best episode of the entire show. I can't think of any I prefer - I'd place it above Cape Feare and You Only Live Twice

I have a soft spot for Marge vs The Monorail since I think it also started the 'wacky Springfield scheme' formula with the town hall meeting and the whole town taking part in some ridiculous stunt to enrich it. I think it's the true transformative point The Simpsons plots got bigger and became as much about the supporting cast as the family themselves, even if Season Three dipped its toes into that a few times. I still think Homer the Heretic is one of the funniest episodes in the whole series, though in hindsight, it's maybe a little too easy to root for Homer given everyone trying to shame or reconvert him in a very forceful method, especially Marge who is just aggressively pious this episode (though Homer does just fall asleep in church and converses with God again so she doesn't exactly 'win'). Also Rough Draft's first episode, so lots more wild takes than usual, which makes for a fun watch.
The radio tilting moment from Mr. Plow is legitimately one of the funniest jokes in the ENTIRE show. By the way, I found your content recently, from one hardcore simpsons fan to another, your stuff is top notch.
Krusty Gets Kancelled is my absolute favorite episode of the series. It’s my favorite, I’m not saying it’s the best. I find myself going back to it so often. I’ve always found myself drawn to the character of Krusty and it’s one of his best show cases. The Gabbo and run down Krusty Show stuff is great. We want Chilly Willy is one of my most quoted lines from the series. The guest stars all give good and memorable performances. I just love it!
I started watching an episode of The Simpsons each night before bed and by the time I got to season 4 I was watching 3-4 episodes a night it was just that good.
The Last Exit To Springfield may very well be not only the best season 4 episode, or the best Simpsons episode, but perhaps even the best twenty consecutive minutes of entertainment ever conceived. Not a single scene is filler, every joke hit its out of the park, it's got heart, it's got ridiculousness, what more could there possibly be in entertainment?
I love Lisa is my fav of Season 4. Ralph tends to be a joke character for a lot of the Simpson's run, but his being taken seriously and also feeling hurt really is deep, and one of the few characters I was almost moved to tears by in the show. Really adore the ending too and Chieff Wigum's choice is also both funny and oddly sweet.
This is my top ten... I think? 1. Kamp Krusty 2. Selma's Choice 3. Duffless 4. Last Exit To Springfield 5. The Front 6. A Streetcar Named Marge 7. Lisa's First Word 8. I Love Lisa 9. Whacking Day 10. Marge vs The Monorail It really is a hard season to rank, though.
I'm a little appalled that Whacking Day didn't even make the semifinals. The Larry Wh-- OOPS, I mean BARRY White stuff is absolutely phenomenal, I'd even say it's the best example in the entire series of a celebrity guest star playing themself; the look on his face when he's told about what Whacking Day is all about is priceless. I'd probably put it in my top 5 for the season.
I hardly even remember Last Exist to Springfield. Its one of those episodes where I know all the jokes but never seem to remember the jokes being from the episode. The only one from season 4 I never really cared for was A Streetcar Named Marge and I'm fairly indifferent to Lisa's Crush but otherwise great selection. For my list I'd remove them and probably add your 11th, 12th, or 13th choices and rearrange the order slightly. Season 4 has more of my all time favorite episodes than any other season of the show.
It is also amazing that a lot of the episodes that were left out of the Top 13 are amazing too. Brother from the Same Planet and Marge in Chains for example

Every character Phil Hartman played was extra special in their own way, shape, and form! That guy was taken from us way too soon! RIP! Phil Hartman will always be dear to me!

Speaking of incomplete memories of when you were a child. I have a memory of when I was about 2 or 3 years old, it is of The Simpsons. I remember going into the living room and over the other side of the room was the T.V. and there was a shot of Apu talking to Homer in the Kwik e mart. I can just think back to that moment and can see them silently walking. While my mom then walks past me into the hallway.
Last Exit to is my favorite of Simpsons period. Especially with the protest and the protest song. I find it even more to what's being going on last year and this year so I have been playing it often lately

You know it's ironic how 'Krusty Gets Cancelled' feels meta-textual in retrospect. because you've got Krusty's show getting cancelled by channel 6 for being old and stale, whilst Gabbo is a new and exciting show that takes away ground from Krusty's ratings and audience.
When you listed these episodes i suddenly realized how packed and great was this season full of unforgetable stuff....I really love these wacky jokes but it has also deep and sweet tones
season 3 4 and 6 are almost too packed with stuff the great stuff takes away from the still very good stuff in lesser episodes sadly....stuff that would highlight other seasons gets pushed aside for classic iconic moments too many in these three seasons to count...
The Simpsons was at its best when Conan was part of the writing staff. Marge vs the Monorail was one of 4 episodes that he was the head writer on and it definitely shows
Mr. Plow will forever remain my favourite S4 episode, but I might chug that to the spanish dub, this was one of those episodes where you KNEW the VAs were having a lot of fun, the delivery of the jokes is just brilliant.
Overall however, I just love season 4 as a whole.

Probably the most memorable joke for me in season 4 is the crazy old guy in Krusty gets Kancelled. "The old grey mare, she ain't what she used to be, ain't what she used to be, ain't what she used to be."
That image of Lisa without braces with her teeth coming through her head always freaked me out xD
"A Streetcar Named Marge" is my favourite Simpson's episode of all time. I don't know exactly why I love it so much, but i definitely do.
marge gets to be more of a character...shes not just stuck in a box in that one homer is for once.....hes on auto pilot more in the background not being important which marge 50% of the time is.. its a good role reversal...same thing with lisa and bart in I love lisa...barts just in the background and its perfect the amount he shows up and hes written to be funny but nothing really stays with you cause hes just part of the scenery of a few big moments

Man, Last Exit to Springfield is my favourite Simpsons episode ever. It's almost like every damn sentence is a joke
whats great about last exit and why I have it as my favorite is simple its flawless..the closest negative nitpick I can think of is it clearly came in short when they animated it which is why they extend stretch and bring back the dental plan joke and yet it doesn't feel forced...everything else is perfect...
@@razkable the grampa story joke goes on way too long, and the Lisa Needs Braces gag also goes on way too long. Such an overrated episode, not even the best of season 4 (that would be either I Love Lisa, homer the heretic, or mr plow)

That Top 3 was stacked. I definitely can't disagree with your #1, though. Definitely one of the best episodes in the series. "Which was the style at the time" is probably my personal most quoted Simpsons joke ever. Also, using Mercenary Boxing for the #1 spot was genius. Keep it up.

Season 4 is easily the best season of the series IMO. It has so many classic lines and episodes in it, and it's freaking hilarious. Plus, I absolutely love the animation style in Mr. Plow and Homer's Triple Bypass. The scene when Homer's heart shatters in Mr. Burns' office is so beautifully and hilariously animated!
Yeah this is when they got Rough Draft to animate and their style wasn't quite homogenised just yet, so we get some really fun bouncy or wild moments.
Lisa's First Word has always been my favourite episode of all of The Simpsons. It encapsulates exactly what The Simpsons means to me. And the ending :')
Homer the Heretic should be higher. But such a great season overall.
I Love Lisa is weird, in that it gave us an only glimpse of what Ralph could be, and then was never picked up again (unless you count his stint in the Party Posse)
the awkwardness when ralph says to lisa while walking her home, so......you like...stuff!...and her trying to be nice and the cut away with him finishing his story is such well timed observational kid humor...
The best Ralph besides this was when Marge forced Bart to be his playmate (“you have no idea what it’s like being paired up with a dufus” cue Homer) and then Bart betrays him for the city key and then gets betrayed by the bullies (I hope the irony isn’t lost on you, Simpson”). Then Ralph is brave.

I remember that list too, I saw it as well and went 'really?'. But no it really just is that good. The jokes per minute is absolutely insane and they all hit. It even has some really memorable shots, the burns and smithers in the control room with the door hanging, the wide shot of the plant strike, and almost everything in the dentist is etched into my brain as an almost platonic ideal of what Simpsons is to me.
I never stop laughing at the That's good...ouh that's bad in the first part of Threehouse of horror ! Classic Simpsons !

My mates dug out a season four DVD and I said to put that one on. They said something similar to our host "the union episode"? As we were watching it, they just kept saying "wow, this moment is in that episode too!". There are more memorable and quotable moments in that episode than in most shows.
@@mankytoes from what I saw that episode was written by everyone in the room adding jokes to a simple storyline and they went out of control and were most likely all on drugs to stay up all night to come up with these jokes as fast paced as they did since remember this is near the end of the run when half the original writers producers showrunners directors were leaving the show and they changed animation studios from klaspy csupo full time to film roman..season 4 was the end of peak simpsons
I got the Season 4 DVD as a kid for Christmas. My sister got Season 2 of Futurama. That was a goodass Christmas.
I love all of season 4, but I think New Kid on The Block is very underrated, I used to not like it as a kid (because I used to just hate romance as a 7 year old) but re-watching it, it's one of my favorites and I found Laura Powers to be a very interesting character who should have been brought back. It would be cool if you did an Extra Seconds review on New Kid on The Block.

I'm glad that you highly rate episodes such as Lisa's first word and I choose Lisa; as I have gotten older I have found myself more grounded to lisa-centric episodes purely by personal taste - that organic down to earth episode that can be pote totally insightful and emotional whilst still being extremely funny. I briefly studied a streetcar names desire as an adult, so I will have to rewatch that one to see if the incongruence is humorously unsettling too.

My argument for "So, It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show": The first act is entirely new material and the structure story is fun, solid, and a little emotional at the end. Some of the classic clips that they choose are the best bits of weaker episodes, so it's nice to have them all in one spot. The "D'oh" montage just needs to exist. And they extend the Homer down the gorge scene with so it plays out in its entirety! I'm always disappointed when I watch "Bart the Daredevil" and the full glory of that scene isn't intact. All in all, I feel it was a great little retrospective of the early years of The Simpsons that is great for newcomers, so I always consider it one of my favorites.
That's a good point. The clips aren't overbearing or anything either, a lot of them are pretty punchy like you described.

@@TheRealJims its good for a clip show but it the bottom of the barrell..not bad but this is season 4 and well even the front the worst episode of the season is much better so...no way its up there...but of all the clip shows its the one to watch for the new animation and the verity of clips being in season 4 helps them because writing a season 3 clip show must of been really hard

Great list dude. My list is pretty close to yours, only I would have had Krusty Gets Kancelled on mine. In terms of the rankings I'm not entirely sure how mine would be without thinking about it first, but Marge vs the Monorail and Last Exit to Springfield are in my top 2 spots as well. I knew those would the top 2, and they should be. It was great hearing you talk about Season 4, and I cannot wait to see the rest of your Simpsons retrospectives and countdowns.

I spent the whole video basically knowing what the top 2 would be, and wondering which order you'd put them in. Glad to see you, in my view, made the right call. I think Last Exit might genuinely be the best episode of the entire show. I can't think of any I prefer - I'd place it above Cape Feare and You Only Live Twice

I have a soft spot for Marge vs The Monorail since I think it also started the 'wacky Springfield scheme' formula with the town hall meeting and the whole town taking part in some ridiculous stunt to enrich it. I think it's the true transformative point The Simpsons plots got bigger and became as much about the supporting cast as the family themselves, even if Season Three dipped its toes into that a few times.
I still think Homer the Heretic is one of the funniest episodes in the whole series, though in hindsight, it's maybe a little too easy to root for Homer given everyone trying to shame or reconvert him in a very forceful method, especially Marge who is just aggressively pious this episode (though Homer does just fall asleep in church and converses with God again so she doesn't exactly 'win'). Also Rough Draft's first episode, so lots more wild takes than usual, which makes for a fun watch.
I love the Nintendo Music in the background. Especially the Zelda music!!
The radio tilting moment from Mr. Plow is legitimately one of the funniest jokes in the ENTIRE show.

Krusty Gets Kancelled is my absolute favorite episode of the series. It’s my favorite, I’m not saying it’s the best. I find myself going back to it so often. I’ve always found myself drawn to the character of Krusty and it’s one of his best show cases. The Gabbo and run down Krusty Show stuff is great. We want Chilly Willy is one of my most quoted lines from the series. The guest stars all give good and memorable performances. I just love it!
I love how the chili peppers are all adamant they won't change their lyrics and then 180 instantly too, great episode :p

I started watching an episode of The Simpsons each night before bed and by the time I got to season 4 I was watching 3-4 episodes a night it was just that good.

The Last Exit To Springfield may very well be not only the best season 4 episode, or the best Simpsons episode, but perhaps even the best twenty consecutive minutes of entertainment ever conceived. Not a single scene is filler, every joke hit its out of the park, it's got heart, it's got ridiculousness, what more could there possibly be in entertainment?
I love Lisa is my fav of Season 4. Ralph tends to be a joke character for a lot of the Simpson's run, but his being taken seriously and also feeling hurt really is deep, and one of the few characters I was almost moved to tears by in the show. Really adore the ending too and Chieff Wigum's choice is also both funny and oddly sweet.

I'm a little appalled that Whacking Day didn't even make the semifinals. The Larry Wh-- OOPS, I mean BARRY White stuff is absolutely phenomenal, I'd even say it's the best example in the entire series of a celebrity guest star playing themself; the look on his face when he's told about what Whacking Day is all about is priceless. I'd probably put it in my top 5 for the season.
I hardly even remember Last Exist to Springfield. Its one of those episodes where I know all the jokes but never seem to remember the jokes being from the episode. The only one from season 4 I never really cared for was A Streetcar Named Marge and I'm fairly indifferent to Lisa's Crush but otherwise great selection. For my list I'd remove them and probably add your 11th, 12th, or 13th choices and rearrange the order slightly. Season 4 has more of my all time favorite episodes than any other season of the show.

Speaking of incomplete memories of when you were a child. I have a memory of when I was about 2 or 3 years old, it is of The Simpsons. I remember going into the living room and over the other side of the room was the T.V. and there was a shot of Apu talking to Homer in the Kwik e mart. I can just think back to that moment and can see them silently walking. While my mom then walks past me into the hallway.

Last Exit to is my favorite of Simpsons period. Especially with the protest and the protest song. I find it even more to what's being going on last year and this year so I have been playing it often lately
