      the way you sarcastically feel about arc types and foils being predictable is how I feel about power and fighting ability in battle anime...people seem to love the hyped strong characters just cause their strong and fight good...okay?..and anything else?..nope so why should I care about a gary stu deus ex machina character on a emotional level if the writer only made them to be strong and thus not have much else going for them besides how strong they get are and what powers they have to fix issues...people eat this crud up and love the whole main character one day will become so strong I can't wait to see that syndrome as if that matters...think about it...if you know the growth of a characters power then why even care when they attain it?...its already predictable and the story usually ends once they gain said power so wasn't it about the journey not the end goal?...but it matters so much to anime fans...how strong is goku going to be..as if his character was not more than that as a kid..which he totally was...

    Currently compiling screenshots and taking notes on all the Season 4 Simpsons episodes, but figured I could fit this video in and not rush through the re-watch. I had been kinda putting off doing this review for awhile. I discovered during editing that Hank basically became my avatar in describing how I felt about the film at certain parts. He's such an expressive character. He clearly missed his calling in being a snarky UA-cam personality.

    I'd say the most underwhelming part about Finding Dory for me was the movie's setting taking place at aquarium. While the aquarium works with the context of the plot, there's just not a lot of danger to be had at an aquarium. Compared to the numerous amount of threats Marlin & Dory had to face in the vast ocean. They faced a hungry shark, a violent angler fish, a hoard of jellyfish, a humpback whale, a flock of seagals, a giant fishing net, and it was done to save Nemo who was about to be taken by an abusive owner. The sequel just doesn't have much peril to be had other than Dory not finding finding her parents, or having Marlin & Nemo risk being shipped off to another location in the climax. An okay film, its just the aquarium is a little to kiddy for my liking. Although the squid at the beginning was my favorite part.

    The way I see it, if Finding Nemo is a linear experience then Finding Dory is a Metroidvania.
    Structurally it’s less about going from point A to B with lots of varied events along the way, and more about exploring one topic, one area, to the fullest.

      And besides, he didn't really "Teach" Mcqueen how to drive backwards, Mcqueen was just worried about Mater's safety thinking he'll "Wreck or something". Mater was just reasurring him in the most entertaining way possible that that's not going to happen. Lightning just decided to try himself.

    Oh my gosh, I loved this movie SO much. It's a fond memory of seeing it at a theater with my aunt and cousins on my birthday in 2016, so maybe I might be a bit more sentimental about this one than most people might be, overall. But Finding Dory is a special sequel that somehow always nearly brings me to tears when I think about it. Specifically, the aforementioned real life parallels and the emotional impact of losing parent and child for a very long time with only vague memories of them. Sad stuff.
    But I'm not afraid to call Finding Dory one of my new all-time favorites, I love all the new characters, especially Hank, and the ending climax is just golden. The moment with the truck being sent sailing into the ocean, all the fish flying out to freedom to the happy-go-lucky tune will remain rattling around in my subconscious for the rest of my life. And the moral? Just keep swimming. I blame Dory.

    Yesterday I was rewatching all your Pixar Perfect reviews, I stopped at Monsters Inc because I had some stuff to do. I was lowkey hopping you would drop a new one after I finished my rewatch, and I found this when I came back! Neat!
    It's not the movie I was expecting, but still. Also, I Guess both Incredibles 2 and TS4 are harder films to talk about, specially the later.

  • @SevenEllen
    @SevenEllen 3 роки тому +4

    I honestly thought they were setting up an ending where Marlin and Nemo work out that Dory doesn't merely suffer short-term memory loss, they realise she has an excellent memory ... from READING. Dory has proven to remember large amounts of information from written word, and as the writers decided to approach this story as Dory's memory loss being a disability, it would have been so powerful if they had boosted Dory as not someone disadvantaged, but someone who has a strength by what makes her different.

  • @SKOT_3
    @SKOT_3 4 роки тому +4

    I really don't like what they did with Marlin in this film. Like his lack of trust feels nonsensical considering not only his arc in Nemo but also his relationship with Dory, wasn't him trusting Dory what ultimately lead him to his son? So why is Nemo the one calling him out like he knows her more? It just feels like his development fades till he needs to give that talk to Dory.

      Haha, well Pixar films are kinda graded on a curve when it comes to emotional wreckage. It might just be a repeat viewing thing, where this film doesn't hit you as hard the second or third time through.

  • @SpongeyTheEditor
    @SpongeyTheEditor 4 роки тому +6

    I feel kinda similar to this as I did to Monsters U but way better. This strikes a better balance of elements with a more engaging storyline throughout due to the flashbacks, and the emotional gut punches are effective. Despite some rehash elements, it becomes sort of its own thing in the end with flipping the disability thing to the forefront. Not quite a great movie but better than average for this kind of movie and it's honestly stuck with me more than say, Incredibles 2, but that's a discussion for another day.

    I''m not gonna lie, I was kinda upset when it was revealed Jenny and Charlie were alive. I thought they were going to turn the story into a "biological family isn't your only family" and "your parents are there in parts of your personality" thing.

    • @TheRealJims
      @TheRealJims  4 роки тому +9

      I'm guessing that they didn't want to do a dead parent theme right after The Good Dinosaur. This film was probably in production around the same time. I like your suggestion of how Dory's (dead) parents would live on in her personality, though. They would have to re-work the character arc and maybe reorganize the entire second act, but that could've been a neat direction.

    • @ToonReel001
      @ToonReel001 4 роки тому +3

      Well I suppose they already did that message with 'The Tigger Movie' and since that was similarly a Disney sequel spin off for the comic relief of the first film, maybe it would have been too much of a rehash.

    In my opinion I think Finding Dory was a good sequel it explained who Dory is as a character and I loved that they used some of the things she said in the first movies and made it part of the plot of the movie also I think Hank was a great character and his arc was really good. in conclusion I think Finding Dory is a good sequel and a good movie.

    12:55 - What exactly did Mater achieve in Cars 2? He had no goals set and a bunch of shit happened and worked in his favor. The whole Mater exposing Axlerod thing was just pulled out of thin air. The only thing Mater knew was what kind of bolts Axlerod had. And yes, in the first Cars, Mater taught Lightning how to drive backwards and he used that trick in the final race. Mater did fuck all in the second film.

    Finding Dory is to me, very low down on the Pixar sequel/prequel list. It felt rather unnecessary. The flashbacks felt rather convenient to the plot. Marlin has forgotten everything from the first film, at least Nemo is more consistent. Everyone gushed about hank, but I saw him as a little generic, as you know what's going to happen to him at the end. Destiny and Bailey I didn't find very funny. I did like the Aquarium setting though, gave some nice visuals and bright colours. I couldn't get really emotional when Dory was reunited with her parents as I couldn't stop thinking how for years and years they've been making lines of shells, not the best coping mechanism. The end action scene felt way too goofy for my liking. Also this film could've touched more on the environment, but no, crashing a truck into the ocean is a good thing. Overall, whilst it was fun, had some nice ideas, it felt too basic and unnecessary as the plot is kicked into gear for no reason.
    I someone think Monster's University is better as it doesn't repeat the exact same messages, and changes character dynamics more.
