    On re-watching the video, I want to make a correction that Mindy and Marge's outfits are not "exactly" the same. Marge's outfit is much more revealing and has more of a lace pattern, looks more like a nighty than an actual evening dress. I don't think it changes the over-arching argument being made in that section (that Homer is morphing Mindy and Marge's image), but it is worth noting. I think the difference between outfits makes the theory slightly weaker overall.

      TheRealJims LOVE your videos, but your trip down the rabbit hole of logical consistency and the distance to Capital City is a bit over the top. What we see on the screen is exactly what happened. The beauty of the Simpsons is that Homer and Marge really do have a great relationship.

    I always really loved how Mindy respected Homer’s choice and didn’t want to do anything he was uncomfortable with. It’s such a nice change from the typical seductress home wrecker trope, this episode really just feels like two people made an unexpected connection and don’t know how to deal with it and it’s sweet to watch them respectfully work through it. The ending with Marge was just the cherry on top and really sweet.
    I know this isn’t really related to the theory but I just love this episode man

      Mindy KNEW he was married, right? I don't recall there ever being a scene where it explicitly shows that she does. Did she think he was single, or did she know he was a married man? I know Homer mentions Marge at the end, but as far as I can recall, that's the first Mindy hears of her.

    This is one of my favourite Simpsons episodes. The way it genuinely but sympathetically explores having a crush whilst being in a committed relationship is pitch perfect. It shows that neither of them are bad people, its natural to be a attracted to other people even if you have a partner. And I like how they portray Homer’s conflict - he doesn’t want to hurt Marge but he can’t help how he feels. But the ending with the surprise reveal of Marge is the icing on the cake. It shows that commitment is the most important component in a relationship and just because you have other attractions doesn’t mean you have to act on them. Marge and Homer’s commitment and love for each other is stronger than fleeting attraction.

    • @Iamyou36912
      @Iamyou36912 Рік тому

      I been with my man for 3 years and people have passed by me talked to me and nothing ever ignited in me saying ooooh I’m naturally attracted this is natural yeah!!! No it’s a toxic trait

    I always hate when the show or fans try to insist that Mindy is like Jacque or Lurleen or something. Jacque was actively trying to break up Homer and Marge just to sleep with Marge, while Mindy was just being Homer's friend. Talking to him, enjoying using their business for room service, etc. She even states at the end that yeah, she'd like to have sex with Homer but she knows he's married, and respects his choice either way. She's very sympathetic and nice. She has a crush on a coworker, but she tries to make friends with him either way and respects him when he decides to no longer hang out with her due to the awkwardness. Overall, out of all of the characters in the many "marriage crisis" episodes they have where a character tries to break up or sleep with Homer or Marge, Mindy is my favorite because she's so funny, nice, sweet, and just generally a good person

    For me the biggest argument against Homer deluding himself on cheating with Mindy is that almost always his delusions are olayed for laughs and are clearly shown to be delusions. There's no point of adding a delusion if it doesn't make for a joke.

    • @troodon1096
      @troodon1096 2 роки тому +14

      Exactly. Homer might lie to himself, but the show has no reason to lie to the audience. Whenever Homer (or anyone else for that matter) is having a delusion, it's always made obvious to the audience that it is a delusion. That throws the theory out of the window as there's no joke in lying to the audience unless they explicitly reveal at some point that it was a lie. That's just basic narrative convention. You can screw with the audience if you like but eventually you have to tell them you did, or what's the point? It would be a joke only the writers could ever get.

    I totally agree with the points you make in the last few minutes of the video (and I love that quote from ToonrificTariq). To me, the main thing that's always separated Homer from other terrible cartoon fathers like Peter Griffin and Randy Marsh, is that when all the chips are down, ultimately, he will do the right thing. Homer may be thoughtless, and reckless, but he genuinely LOVES his wife - the show has gone out of its way to show that over and over. That's the reason why the show can get away with doing so many marriage crisis episodes - because when they reconcile at the end, you can genuinely believe it. I still think the best marriage crisis episode - and the one that best illustrates why they're still together - isn't even one revolving around Homer. It's Life on the Fast Lane. Because that episode, way back in season 1, highlights Homer's main faults as a husband - his selfishness and carelessness, and puts Marge in a situation where we can totally understand why she is smitten by another guy who pays attention to her. Yet with just one scene - that scene in the kitchen where Homer makes the clumsy analogy about the way Marge makes sandwiches - it shows us that despite all of his stupidity, his love for Marge is very pure, no different from that teenager who was first smitten in high school, and makes clear why Marge couldn't go through with leaving him, because he really does care.
    When you compare Life on the Fast Lane to the Homer focused marriage crisis episodes, you can notice a clear difference. Marge is much more proactive in LOTFL, actively going out of her way to spend time with Jacques, knowing full well what it means, while in Homer's episodes, he tends to stumble blindly into these near-cheating situations. He doesn't realise that Lurleen wants him, and while he knows he's attracted to Mindy, he goes out of his to avoid spending time with her. And I think it's because ultimately the writers know that unlike Marge, who's a more morally right character, and therefore can afford to have such a slip-up and still be likeable, Homer's character is much more bullish, and therefore must tread a much more careful line. They know that to get away with having him do all these awful things for the sake of comedy, they have to give him a soft side that still makes you able to root for him. And that soft side is, as ToonrificTariq said, the fact that he'd do anything for Lisa, and ESPECIALLY the fact that his love for Marge is ultimately a very strong and pure one, and that the thought to stray would never even occur to him, unless, as you said when reviewing Last Temptation, the whole universe conspired against him.

    • @exantiuse497
      @exantiuse497 4 роки тому +10

      I agree that the writers can't write an episode where Homer cheats on Marge since that would make him irredeemable in the eyes of the audience because of his other vices, but I disagree that it fits his character, I think it's completely unrealistic. Maybe he wouldn't go out of his way to cheat on her if he had time to consider it. But he has so little self control when it comes to literally anything he wants, be it beer, food, leisurly activity etc., that if he was shoved into a situation where his ability restrain himself was tested like that, where he didn't have time to consider and didn't even need to do anything, just roll with it, then I think he would fall to the temptation like he does to more or less all temptations in his life. The only reason he doesn't do it is because he has zero "moral wiggle room", because the audience would hate him after that and that isn't what the writers want

    I could see Mindy having Homer's addictive personality and somehow showing up to work drunk once or twice, but not having Homer's "George Jetson Job Security," as there's no doubt he did the same multiple times without too much repercussion. I'd assume Homer hearing rumors somehow linking it to hitting the bottle. The whole point of this episode is to show Homer and Marge’s love and bond. Yeah maybe it wasn’t Marges best most attractive week on earth but they are still soulmates. Which is backed up in the soulmate episode. That’s the quality of the show, even after all this mayhem and absurdity, the average viewer can relate to Homer and his love for his wife. I think this shows Homer true integrity. He wanted this romantic evening but not with some women he fantasized about but with his wife. Homer might not be the smartest person but he knows he can rely on his heart and his heart is with Marge.

    That is honestly the most in-character storyline.

    It seems to me that there’s a rule that governs every fantasy homer has in the episode. It’s a consistent aesthetic choice when portraying fantasy land. The rule is this: always show it in a way that unambiguously lets the audience know that homer is fantasizing. See 2:45
    A lot of shows and movies follow this rule and aim never to conflate (like, in something like 8 1/2) fantasy and reality. They do not allow for ambiguity and forbid the audience even momentary confusion. In this popular aesthetic ghosts are invariably see-through. There are no “plain-clothes” angels and an imagined animal always talks or sings as though to say: “Just so you know, I’m perfectly impossible.”
    I think a good writer (if the ambiguity at the end were intended) would have set it up by showing fantasies earlier in the episode that were plausible as real events and then in subsequent scenes clarifying these as fantastic... then in the last scene, repeating the pattern of ambiguity and closing without the final clarification.
    As it is, I think it’s obvious from the consistent aesthetic they employ when homer is fantasizing that the intent was what it seems: to bring Marge into the script in the flesh and not as a psychological projection.
    The real question is why so many viewers “know about”... are wise to an infidelity that’s not a part of an official story line... but that isn’t about homer’s psychology or incomplete official storyline but of our own.

Rather than Lurlene who met his family n still would sleep with a married man. I just mention her cause it's an easy comparison to make. But the kiss on the bed could be considered enough to count is as cheating, it depends on where you draw that line in your definition of cheating. I don't think Mindy is a home wrecker, I think she just met a man she could never be with n accepted it.

    That line about Mindy "hitting the bottle pretty hard" is a hilarious meta joke about the fate of guest-star-voiced one-off characters (and one of the few funny jokes in Another Simpsons Clip Show).
    The writers knew that The Last Temptation of Homer's conclusion doesn't explain why Mindy doesn't continue to appear as Homer's co-worker in any later episodes, but they couldn't help it. Ending the episode with that surprise reveal about Marge in the hotel room made it impossible to write Mindy out of the show within the same episode, but they couldn't really do it afterwards either because Michelle Pfeiffer never reprised her role. When they couldn't give any satisfying explanation to the character's disappearance at the time, they did the next best thing by making a meta joke about the lack of such explanation later in the clipshow.
    The claim that Mindy would have turned into an alcoholic and lost her job comes completely out of nowhere, but it's especially the quick and casual way Homer mentions it that makes it feel like an intentionally unsatisfying deus ex machina explanation to her absence. It's actually kind of similar to "Poochie died on the way back to his home planet". I assume that this joke was intended to comment not just Mindy's character but also others like Herb Powell, Laura Powers, Allison Taylor etc. who had to disappear without getting written out in a satisfying way.

    I've always think that Marge is more likely to cheat on Homer than the contrary. I don't blame her. Sexual impulse is something quite real and it's hard to have a grasp on it.
    And unfortunatly, Marge is frustated a lot and on a lot of things, she had no friends, very few hobbies, a child like yet loving husband and three troublesome kids.
    We see her get adicted to things quite quickly to cop with that frustation ( gambling, online vidéo game, alcool, violence...) and, like the Lovejoys or the Flanders, she got that puritan vibs going on, I don't think it's helping.
    And the fact that she never talk about Jacques when Homer talk about Mindy is interesting.
    Homer admit his temptation, he isn't proud about it but he acknowledge it.
    Marge either don't assume or had more things to hide.
    We see her regularly had fantasy about Flanders.
    Final nail in the coffin, on that episode where Homer get diagnosed with narcolepsy, he refers to sleeping with an other woman as :" the only drunken mistake, I will never do" ( something like that).

    Why couldnt he have slept with mindy, then slept with Marge on a future night because the idea was so wild he needed to recreate it with his wife? Thatd also justify mindy hitting the bottle and losing her job
